I came for the obsessive sniper cowboy.
I stayed because he kept asking for verbal consent.
No one is more surprised than me.
Based on the blurb and page count, I fully expected this to be one long thirst trap with a few horses wandering through the background for atmosphere. Instead, I got a romance wrapped around a mystery, a genuinely compelling suspense plot and a heroine whose healing journey gave the relationship far more emotional weight than I was expecting.
Was it perfect? No.
Did I inhale it in one sitting anyway? Absolutely.
Content note: human trafficking, abduction, physical abuse, trauma/PTSD, references to sexual exploitation.
What worked for me
(aka: apparently tactical surveillance and emotional intelligence can coexist)
The insta-lust...somehow worked?
This is probably the biggest surprise.
Normally, insta-lust loses me almost immediately but this never felt like two attractive people deciding they're soulmates after prolonged eye contact.
Instead, the attraction is framed through trust, safety and recognition.
Lily's body responds to the first person who consistently makes her feel protected instead of threatened, while Mason repeatedly proves that his obsession never overrides her agency.
Every significant step belongs to her.
He waits. He asks. He checks. He communicates.
For a book that opens with "this man is already obsessed" I was genuinely impressed by how much emphasis was placed on choice.
Quiet competence is my kryptonite
Mason Rivera is a man of very few words.
Unfortunately for me, every single one of them lands.
Former sniper. Protective cowboy. Competent ranch owner. Makes breakfast. Apparently skipped dating altogether and went straight to lifelong commitment.
This man communicates almost exclusively through actions and unwavering certainty and I fear that worked on me exactly as intended.
More than just smut
Another pleasant surprise.
There's an actual mystery and suspense storyline running alongside the romance and Lily's history isn't treated like a convenient tragic backstory that's forgotten once the flirting starts.
Her trauma informs her choices, her independence and the way she navigates the world, which makes the romance feel rooted in something much deeper than physical attraction.
She isn't waiting to be rescued either - she's actively hunting the people responsible for destroying her family, which gives the romance far more substance than I was expecting.
I also appreciated that despite the instant chemistry, the relationship itself shows remarkable restraint.
For two people who wanted each other from approximately 0.7 seconds after making eye contact, they spend far more time building trust than jumping into bed and I think the story is stronger for it.
Where it lost me
(aka: sir, respectfully... advance the plot)
We've already established you're obsessed
Mason's devotion is one of the book's biggest strengths.
It's also one of the book's biggest pacing issues.
The first half repeatedly circles the same emotional conclusions until I felt like I was attending weekly meetings titled: "Yes, Mason Still Likes Lily".
I believed him the first time. And the second. And the eighteenth.
I kept waiting for the story to cash in on all that beautiful emotional groundwork instead of reminding me it existed.
The forced proximity took its sweet time
This book advertised forced proximity and then made me work for it.
I spent a good chunk of the middle internally yelling:
MOVE 👏🏼 HER 👏🏼 TO 👏🏼 THE 👏🏼 RANCH 👏🏼
When it finally happened, it absolutely worked but I do think the relationship would have benefited from getting these two into the same space a little earlier instead of relying on repeated internal monologues.
Tiny chapters, tiny whiplash
I'm usually a short chapter enthusiast because it tricks my brain into believing I'm reading at Olympic speed.
But the first half contains several POV switches that last only a paragraph or two, making the pacing feel more fragmented than necessary.
Thankfully this settles down in the second half where the reading experience becomes much smoother and much easier to binge.
Final thoughts
This ended up being a much more thoughtful romance than I expected.
Underneath the possessive cowboy energy is a story about trust, patience and reclaiming autonomy after trauma, and that's ultimately what sold me on both the relationship and the instant attraction.
Did the middle occasionally spin its wheels?
Absolutely.
Did I spend twenty chapters begging someone to move Lily into the ranch?
Also absolutely.
But the emotional payoff landed, Mason remained a walking green flag disguised as an obsessive sniper cowboy and I'm invested enough in the overarching mystery that I'll happily come back for Luke and Harper.
Final verdict
3.75 ⭐️ - Turns out my ideal fictional man is a quiet cowboy who conducts tactical surveillance, makes omelets and treats enthusiastic verbal consent like standard operating procedure.

I love a dark cowboy romance and this hook exceeded my expectations. This book is the second book in the Iron Ridge series, and while the first book wasn’t my favourite, I fell for this one hook, line and sinker. The plot was well curated and was so intense and dark. There were amazing plot twists, that I soo didn’t expect, and the “cliffhanger” sort of ending has me super excited for the next book. I love a stalker who likes to put up cameras, and this book is a little darker than the first but Mason Rivera stole my heart. Lily is such an interesting and strong character, I fell in love with her passion, strength and courage to stand up for herself after everything she went through (because it takes an insane amount of dedication and strength). Lily is a “I can do everything myself” kind of gal and Mason is a “I know you can but I wanna take care of you” kinda guy, so naturally I was swooning the entire time over their lightning chemistry and fiery attraction to each other. Also Mason is a consent king (uncommon him dark romance now unfortunately), respects boundaries and often lets Lily take charge to regain the power she had once lost. Although, following the structure of a typical dark once story this book hides much more emotional themes and development. I give this a 4.5/5

I am addicted to this Iron Ridge series and book 2, Broken Outlaw did not disappoint. I love that the moment Mason laid eyes on Lily she was his and there was nothing that would stand in his way of protecting her. This morally grey storyline grips hard and has you on the edge of your seat. The tension between these two will make you quiver and the anticipation will have your pulse racing. I loved that Mason gave her space and was patient even though that went against everything inside of him. However, when things shift and danger comes calling, all bets are off and Mason takes charge. Their story is full of suspense and danger along with passion, love and heat, which will have you unable to put this book down. I am eager for the next book as I cannot wait to return to Iron Ridge.

Mason was so beyond stalker behavior.
His heart was in the right place, and thank goodness he was “keeping an eye” on her.
Still…
I was so proud of Lily when she took the chance and trusted him.
There were times she acted before she had a plan, but her heart and courage were in the right place.
She was a survivor, not a victim!
As for the dung heap villain and his men
Things are absolutely fubar’d!
Add to the mix some new elements, and that just makes this whole mess even scarier.
However, I have faith in our guys.
I am so frustrated…

3.5⭐️ I enjoyed Mason and Lily’s story. There is a continued theme from book 1 but I think it could be understood as a stand alone.
Mason is very protective and all in with Lily from the beginning. I liked his approach to her situation and how he let her dictate the pace.
There was more suspense and action in this book however the situation is not yet fully resolved.
I’m looking forward to reading the next book in this series.

Iron Ridge!!
I totally agree this one was way better than the first book. I really like Mason Rivera and the way he protected Lilly from the very beginning. Talk about smoking hot. 🔥🔥
I want Lily Carter. I want her safe. I want her close. I want her mine in a way that has nothing to do with logic.
Lilly wants revenge and when the person she’s after walks in. She’s on a mission to eliminate him.
I’ve never felt anything like it, but it’s to a point that I can’t ignore it any longer.
Found family and morals grey men who will do anything and I do mean anything to protect there women.

Dakota James has quickly become one of those authors whose books I can pick up without hesitation, and Broken Outlaw was no exception. Every book I’ve read from her has pulled me in, and this one completely captured my attention from start to finish.
Mason Rivera was everything I love in a cowboy romance hero. Quiet, patient, protective, and willing to do whatever it takes to keep Lily safe. I absolutely loved the way he cared for Lily without trying to control her. His patience with her, especially when she was struggling with her own emotions and desire for revenge, made me love him even more. Mason’s protective nature was definitely one of my favorite parts of the story.
Lily was easy to understand as a heroine. While I didn’t always agree with her choices, I completely understood why she felt the need to seek revenge and why she carried so much anger and determination. Her journey felt emotional and believable, which made me even more invested in her story.
The romance was a perfect mix of slow-building tension and heartfelt moments. The chemistry between Mason and Lily kept me turning the pages, and the emotional depth of their relationship hit all the right notes.
Then came that ending… and now I have questions! While it wrapped up enough to satisfy me, it also left me desperate for more. Dakota James definitely succeeded in making me immediately want to dive into Reckless Cowboy because I need answers and I need more of this world right now.
If you love protective cowboys, forced proximity, emotional romance, and a hero who will do anything for the woman he loves, Broken Outlaw is absolutely worth picking up.

Dakota James wrote the Iron Ridge series. Broken Outlaw is the second book in the series. Thank you to Grey’s Promotions and the author for the opportunity to read this ARC. This series is interconnected standalone books, but do yourself a favor and read Savage Rancher before Broken Outlaw. I have fully entered my dark cowboy era thanks to Dakota James. I am addicted to this series and completely feral!
I loved Jake with Emma. I did not think it could get any better. Enter Mason Rivera! We were fully warned at the beginning that he would be obsessed. Everything we were promised at the beginning was fully delivered. We were at MINE status within the first chapter. Mason and Lily are exactly what the other needed. Mason is protective and tactical. Lily has been on her own for a long time and on the run. She is looking for vengeance. Mason made sure once she let him in that she knew she wasn’t going to be alone ever again.
Lily was now part of this little found family. Who knew that an author could make trust, safety, and consent so hot! Mason never wants to spook her and is constantly checking in with her. Lily shows Mason a side to life that he never thought he could have or that he deserved. The spice was great, but the relationship Lily and Mason were building is what hooked me. I could not devour this book fast enough.

Mason Rivera lives on a ranch with his two best friends; all three of them connected by their dark pasts. Mason worked as a sniper and still utilises these skills to keep an eye out for both those acting illegally in the vicinity and the object of his affections, Lily. Lily has a vendetta against those who kidnapped and harmed her and her sister over a decade ago, and she has followed their trail to where the story starts. Mason and Lily’s stories turn out to be deeply intertwined, which is especially useful given their immediate, visceral attraction to each other.
I really liked how the chapters were written; they’re very short and sharp, so we’re constantly getting quick and relevant insights into both Lily and Mason’s thoughts and feelings about what’s going on and each other. It makes it incredibly readable and means the story goes by really quickly; I feel like I spent no time at all reading it!
In terms of the romance, this story is 100 per cent based around insta attraction/insta love, so if that isn’t your thing, just be aware. This is a Dark Romance; however, it is more the story itself, the backgrounds, and the day-to-day actions of the people involved that make it dark, rather than the romantic aspect leaning into dark interests, etc.
Broken Outlaw is the second in this series, but I have not read Savage Rancher and don’t think that this impacted my enjoyment of this story. Despite not having read the first one, it was easy to pick up the threads from that story, and it was interesting to see how Mason and Lily’s story ties in to the first in the series (Jake and Emma) and presumably where it is going to go in the next one with cop Harper.

This is the second book in the Iron Ridge series. Each book has been building on the next book in terms of the major plot. I loved the first book and enjoyed this one even more. Lily our MFC has been a victim of a terrible crime that is connected to the Turner’s, her sister died and Lily is here for vengeance. Lily is tough, smart and fierce. She has overcome a horrible tragedy to become a veterinarian in the same town that the Turner ranch is located. Now if you read the first book you know the Turners were mentioned in that book too. Now Mason is mesmerized and very attracted to Lily so he’s been watching over her. I love that in this book Mason falls first and hard. He wants to help Lily although she believes she can solve her problems alone. Lily hasn’t had any relationships since her tragic ordeal and Mason is not a relationship guy. Can two people who have severe trust issues learn to trust and love one another. While the mystery, suspense and action are great in this book, reading about these two complex almost broken people enjoying theirs friends and becoming whole and finding peace was so good. This series won’t be complete until the last book with Luke and Harper where I assume the enemy will be neutralized. This is an amazing series.

Dakota James has a way of creating characters that feel real, flawed, and impossible not to root for, and this book was no exception. From the very first chapter, I was invested in every stolen glance, every hard conversation, and every moment these two spent fighting what was clearly inevitable.
Mason was everything I love in a book boyfriend. Protective without being overbearing, rough around the edges, fiercely loyal, and carrying enough emotional baggage to make every vulnerable moment hit that much harder. Watching his walls slowly come down had me turning pages way past bedtime.

Just when I thought Savage rancher was my absolute favorite, Dakota James was like hold on just a minute I got one better. Broken outlaw is the second book in The iron Ridge series. This book was a complete mind-blowing experience to read. This is a dark cowboy Romance with twists that I didn't even know I needed to read.
This book was about Mason & Lily who were absolutely perfect for each other. I loved how Mason is the stalker, with the cameras and just constantly on guard. Lily I really loved her passion, strength, courage, and Independence to stand up for herself. What Lily went through most would break it would break them, but for her it just made her a heck of a lot stronger.
I really liked how Mason was very much big with consent. He is the consent King, and I love how he would let Lily take control most of the time to help her get back the power she felt she lost. He was reassuring and everything she needed to be that person
I really do like the fact that Lily is the type of woman that I can do it by myself kind of woman, but Mason is the type of man I know you can do it by yourself but I want to help you because I love you and you're mine kind of guy.
I love the plot twist in this book and the little cliffhanger at the end I'm so excited for the second book.

I was so excited to read this book because I love a story where the man is all in the moment he sees her. That was exactly what happened with Mason and Lily. In the first book, you could feel the intrigue that Mason had once he saw her the first time. Mason is this rough around the edges, but for Lily he is caring and gentle. The fact that he can read her so well and tell what she needs just made me swoon!
To say Lily has had it rough the past decade is putting it mildly. She deserves someone like Mason and I'm so glad she recognized that. She is a determined woman who just wants to be cherished and loved. Mason had no problem stepping up to the plate!

not gonna lie, i was hesitant going into this because i wasn’t a fan of the first book but this one was SO much better IMO. I still hate Cole Turner so much though, it physically pains me to read about him. I get that he’s the villain and we need him for the story but he needs to goooo!!

So I was privileged to receive an ARC for the book. I’m a little torn though because while I liked story, as I got towards the end a few times the writing contradicted itself. Not sure if it’s just an ARC thing and will get corrected before release day or what but it bothered me a little. That being said, It was a bit of a quick read for me but I was hooked from the start. This book continues on with the issues with Cole Turner. I definitely don’t like that guy. What I do like is that there is no third act brake. I felt sad for what Lily had happen to her in the past but she didn’t let it brake her. While Mason stalks Lily and would burn the world down for her, I feel like he more so acted like you would expect a former Delta Force sniper to act. The suspense is definitely there. The story kind of ends on a cliffhanger. I’m a little thrown but would I’m intrigued just enough to want to read the next book.

This book was good and a fun read. Y’all know me any morally grey, brooding MMC is my favorite.
This book had all the elements needed to create a perfect plot story revolving revenge and heart filled moments.
The two main characters relationship was perfect. I loved how Mason and Lily were dependent on each other but also let each other be independent showing how much the characters understood their strengths and what they needed.
When the climax arrived, I was on the edge of my seat. I didn’t know what to expect but my mind was conjuring up all sorts of wrong scenarios. The scene played out different from what I expected which I loved since it kept me wrapped within the book.
This book had me going crazy and for it to end the way it did. I need the other book asap. I need to know what’s happening or what’s going to happen next!!

4.5 ⭐️ another romantic suspense hit! Lily is the town vet and came for a change of pace, but is really there to find justice for both her and her sister. Mason has been drawn to her from the start and he’s determined to protect her and make her his. When he discovers what she is up to, he brings her under his protection and they work together to achieve justice. The chemistry is hot and he treats her with such respect. She has incredible strength and courage. He allows her to take the lead in their relationship to give her the control she needs. The continuation of the suspense in this story is well done and while you can read it by itself, you want to keep reading to find out what happens next! Loved Mason and Lily’s story!

He followed Jake to claim his woman and stayed because he bought into the ranch. Lily is the town‘s vet and has her own agenda for staying. From their first meeting, Mason knew Lily was going to be his; he just had to convince the skittish Lily of that. Cole Turner is still running his trafficking ring through the county, can they shut it down? One problem I have with this author’s writing style is the short one page chapters. I feel like it messes up the flow of the book, but that’s just my opinion.
