Dr. Cole Vaughn is a talented surgeon about to be sacrificed. Saving him could end her career. He won't let her pay that price.
Dr. Cole Vaughn has spent his career being twice as good for half the recognition. When a patient’s family files a complaint that puts his future at Ridgeway Medical Center on the line, he fully expects to be sacrificed.
What he doesn’t expect is Harper Sutton. As Director of Risk Management, Harper protects patients, enforces standards, and, when necessary, ends careers. Dr. Cole Vaughn’s investigation should be just another case file, routine and contained.
It isn’t.
His record is clean, the medicine holds, but someone powerful has been very careful to make sure none of that matters. The deeper Harper digs, the more dangerous the truth becomes, and the harder it becomes to pretend that what’s building between them is anything less than what it is.
She holds his career in her hands. He won’t let her risk everything she’s built to save him.
In a system built to protect itself, choosing each other may come at a cost neither of them can afford.

I really enjoyed this story for so many surprising reasons!
First, the deceased grandfather's "swallow reflex" really hit home for me. Over the past year, a family member can't swallow solid food, only liquids, like protein drinks. Duke University, among others, can't find any reason for the illness that could cause this. She has lost 68 pounds, and we are afraid, because she is still losing.
So I called and asked was it possible that she had suffered a "small stroke" like the character, and so far no. Everybody is praying.
Nevertheless, Cole and Harper really supported each other against the racist politics in their hospital. What an awesome story!
I’m a fan of D.L. White forever. Her books are always full of characters that represent real life and real opportunities. This book was no different. It’s was smart and sexy. Maybe a bit more steamy than her previous works so the experience was more enhanced which was great. You will love these characters. Nothing like reading about a blank woman in a successful position. Put her in a compromising position and watch her shine. Loved this one and can’t wait to grab a physical copy.
I fell into this story, got caught up, and wasn't mad about it. Loved Harper, loved Cole, loved Cole's dad, loved Banks, LOVED Vincent, loved Rice getting her face cracked... deliciousness. Two thumbs up. 👍🏾👍🏾

I ain’t even gonna hold you. DL White is one of my comfort authors.
As a contemporary romance writer, I already know what she’s going to give me: a Black man unapologetically in love with a Black woman, chemistry that jumps off the page, spice that has somebody getting put through the mattress, and by the end I’m closing the book smiling.
And this was no exception.
But what really worked here was the tension outside of the romance.
Cole Vaughn is a talented surgeon whose career is under investigation after a patient complaint. Harper Sutton, Director of Risk Management, is assigned to the case and quickly realizes this situation is deeper than one bad outcome. The more she digs, the clearer it becomes that Cole is being positioned as the sacrificial lamb in a system designed to protect power, money, and institutional reputation.
That layer made this impossible to put down for me.
Not knowing whether Cole would keep his job or how Harper was going to navigate doing what was right while protecting her own career kept the pages turning. It speaks to something Black professionals deal with constantly: being questioned, unsupported, and expected to quietly absorb injustice to protect systems that were never built for us in the first place.
I loved the intentionality of making Harper the person fighting for Cole. Watching a Black woman refuse to let the system use her to help destroy a Black man carried so much emotional weight for me.
Also the funniest part of this whole book was the nurses and hospital staff having a group chat dedicated to thirsting over Cole. The fact that the group chat name changed depending on which body part they were obsessing over??? Absolutely sent me. “Forearms” is apparently a personality trait now.
And one thing about DL White? Even the side characters feel alive. Harper’s brother was barely on page and I want his single dad romance immediately.
Smart, emotional, sexy, and layered in all the right ways.
Another book off the shelf. We keep reading with intention. 📚
This was my first medical romance, and now I need more!
DL White leverages the complicated politics of working at a hospital to add tension to this steamy workplace romance between Harper, a hospital administrator, and Cole, a trauma surgeon. Their worlds collide when one of Cole's patients dies, and his rich family implies that Cole is to blame. Harper is tasked with investigating the claim on behalf of the hospital, and their connection grows.
I loved how White was able to balance the action of the hospital with the steamy, forbidden relationship Harper and Cole slip into. The tension between the case that brought them together and keeping their shifting relationship a secret kept me glued to the page and wondering what would happen next. I also really enjoyed Harper as a character, an independent woman who prefers casual dalliances and is not looking for love, and how Cole can lean in and meet her where she is. Their dynamic was so sweet and steamy, even in the midst of the investigation looming over them.
I especially appreciated the not-so-subtle nod to Black professionals in the workplace and the complicated ways we have to navigate office politics and "play the game" to be seen as valuable and non-threatening. Harper and Cole both resisted those expectations, and I loved watching them challenge the status quo.
✨ If you love romances that blend steam with a compelling workplace environment, Standard of Care should be on your reading list!

I liked this story. The storyline was intentional, in that it's main characters were focused on doing the right ethical thing vs saving the hospital's donors over doctors.
Cole and Harper's relationship just happened, as a result of the inquiry over a patient's death. They had that instant chemistry and respect. I liked the playfulness interactions, even though there was a serious situation before them. Cole and Harper learned to trust and believe in each other. The two grew a love relationship, that wasn't planned. They were authentic in how they moved.
The best part was that Harper stead 10 toes down on what was right regardless of what admin wanted to go down. It happened not because of Cole but because it was factually/truthfully correct.
I really enjoyed this medical drama/romance. The lead characters were both so likable. They were intelligent and driven. Harper was a boss baddie. The good doctor moved with intention and integrity. Their chemistry was great. Their intimacy was perfectly spicy. They didn’t have any silly moments of misunderstanding or unnecessary breakups. I loved their courtship. I was equally invested in the medical drama. I used to be a patient relations liaison for a large trauma hospital. I had so many experiences similar to what Harper and Cole were dealing with. It was realistic and relatable. This was such a pleasant read.
I usually don't care for medical drama books, but this one may prove me wrong. Harper and Cole were great together. I loved that they were both professionals willing to stand up for what was right, unwilling to be taken advantage of in their professions.
I enjoyed their playful natures, witty banter, and the way they gradually developed deeper feelings. No instalove here. One of the best parts in the book was the scene with Victor. Chef's kiss!!
D!!!!! This was AMAZING!!!! A mix of the TV show ER and Dr. Ruth mixed together!!! I ABSOLUTELY ENJOYED THIS!!! It grabbed me from the very beginning and I couldn't put it down!! BRAVO!!!! "YOU ATE DOWN WITH THIS ONE!!!!!" YOU GO!!!!!!
The author did an amazing job with this medical storyline. The plot was executed flawlessly, and the writing was the same. I liked both characters and the realistic portrayal of a medical drama. I highly recommend this story.... No spoiler review....
I received an advance copy of this book. It’s a good read, it’s wonderful to see two head strong black educated people realize the kind of love they want. We all tend to settle until we find our soul mates. I would’ve like more grit. Enjoyable.
I was blessed with a review copy of this book and couldn’t put it down! Initial I was a little iffy because the cover wasn’t the most appealing to me. But like the old saying goes, never judge a book by its cover! It felt like I was in an episode of Grey’s anatomy it was so good! The attention to medical detail was awesome. And then the chemistry between Harper and Cole elevated everything to another level. Definitely a five star read!
