About the author

James Preller (born 1961) is the children's book author of the Jigsaw Jones Mysteries, which are published by Scholastic Corporation. He grew up in Wantagh, New York and went to college in Oneonta, New York. After graduating from college in 1983, James Preller was employed as a waiter for one year before being hired as a copywriter by Scholastic Corporation, where he was introduced (through their books) to many noatable children's authors. This inspired James Preller to try writing his own books. James Preller published his first book, entitled MAXX TRAX: Avalanche Rescue, in 1986. Since that time, James Preller has written a variety of books, and has written under a number of pen names, including Mitzy Kafka, James Patrick, and Izzy Bonkers. James Preller lives in Delmar, New York with his wife Lisa and their three children.

Educational with minimal grammatical issues (children speaking incorrectly) and no inappropriate themes. This one I would let Cameron read on his own. The other one we read, not so much. That one is leaving our home.

When your 6 and 7 year old children tell you they like the book and want more of them, but “wish it didn’t have bad words in it” you sit down to read the book. It’s a cute book, funny, and just what you’d expect young 5-8 year olds to enjoy, especially boys. The bad word is hate, and it’s referred to cherries and egg salad. Overall, this is a cute book, and I’ll happily get them more of this series.

read this to my class, they enjoyed it a lot more than me. Couldn't get over the teacher laughing and not caring when the classmate literally wrecked the amazing volcano project that took ages to make, like miss a recess or something damn.

Jigsaw Jones is always a big hit with the second-graders at my school and I use a different book in the series to introduce the elements of the mystery genre to students. The students make connections with Jigsaw, a second grade detective, and enjoyed the incorporation of "magic" tricks and secrets codes. Teachers will like the science connections with a review of the scientific method and volcanoes.

I liked the secret code in the book. I learned that you need to try new foods and not to put the food in a science class volcano because it stinks when it explodes. I liked the part about Yoda and Spiderman too. In a fight, Yoda would totally win!

This is a transitional chapter book that is a fun read. It has a lot of dialogue, and interesting and fairly well developed characters. The characters use the scientific process to solve a mystery. I would use this book to teach about the scientific process, about writing dialogue in stories.

One of my students wanted to read a book and this is the one I picked out for them. To pass my time I decided to read it. It is a fun book and I could see this being a good one for classrooms.
