Hearing Through Silence: Why Choose Fantasy Romance

Rate this book
Fifteen years after a mysterious outbreak shattered the world, Europe is overrun by Demons. Cities lie in ruins, while United Forces of European Purification work tirelessly to reclaim the Old Continent. But this is not an ordinary war, as Demons whisper madness into the thoughts of men, driving soldiers to paranoia and despair. Only women can resist their influence, forming vital partnerships with male fighters. Together they create elite units of Purifiers and Sentinels, the only force capable of standing against the spreading darkness.

Following the Lair Operation in Le Mans, Herais Blackburn is not entirely sure of her role in the war anymore. She started as a photographer, but the aftermath of the battle-day changed everything, and she slowly comes to the realization that being a passive observer is not an option anymore. The emotional toll of the shift and complicated feelings she develops towards the men who should stay off-limits, make the transition even harder to endure. And worst of all, she starts doubting not only the authorities she used to trust, but her own mind as well.

Hearing Through Silence, the second installment of the EchoMind Series, is set in a post-apocalyptic, demon-infested Europe. It follows the story of five elite soldiers and one woman, who may prove to be their salvation or their doom.

I want to scream right now! I knew 600 pages wouldn’t be enough, I don’t think any amount of pages will ever be enough… I love this series so damn much, it’s crazy. And now the book slump starts because nothing like this exists out there (or I haven’t found it yet). But the mix of a (post)apocalyptic storyline with a strong focus on the military, combined with a touch of the paranormal, tension between characters, betrayal, twists and turns, … It is so, so good. There are no proper words to describe what this series does to me.

I adore Herais, I really do. Her character evolves in such a breathtaking way, and it’s amazing to watch her slowly stand up more for herself while navigating a world that becomes more dangerous with every new chapter. Some of the men in her life manage to provoke a whole bunch of emotions in me, but I really hope there is some strong groveling in the future. Herais totally deserves to see them all on their knees (or at least two of them).

This series deserves a lot more attention! And I can’t wait to get my hands on book three.

Oh my god I could NOT PUT THIS DOWN. Literally consumed my life and thoughts until I finished it (in like a day and a half).

This series has the most gripping, edge of your seat, can’t put it down can’t look away action I’ve ever read. The pacing is so well done where you get lots of amazing action with incredible tension and the plot is juicy with unanswered questions.

Somewhat (vague) spoilers ahead:
I am so excited to see where this series goes but I really REALLY hope we get some more good moments for the characters and their relationships going forward! I just want them to be happy, I am a little nervous that this will be like a resident evil or similar video game that just gets more upsetting and darker every book, and without the comfort and joy of the characters falling for each other. With all the obstacles in their way I just don’t want the characters to be incapable of getting out of their own way the entire series.

I was absolutely giddy when two of the characters FINALLY Got together and was really bummed it immediately fell apart. The author said this was a 6 part series so I am hopeful that things smooth out internally to the group ❤️

I also hope the MMCs grovel so hard, I think the FMC (and we all) deserve it. I hope the FMC gives em hell but they won’t leave her alone. When they are separated in the book it was so stressful

This series is fantastic so far! It's a refreshing Why Choose read where the fantasy elements feel less whimsical and more grounded. The way the fights are written gives me WW2 vibes. It feels gritty and based in our current reality.

This is a delicious slow burn and I am here for it. The characters are frustrating and lovely and feel real most of all. I'm dying to know what happens next and I don't even know when the 3rd book comes out.

However, there are quite a few grammatical and spelling errors throughout both books. They're pretty easy to brush over though since it is easy to tell what was meant to be written. They don't necessarily detract from the story but the story would have been improved if these were fixed.

Waiting on baited breath for the 3rd book. Please let it be soon!

Hearing Through Silence by Sigrun Lien has the same effect as its predecessor: I finished it in two days and immediately started catastrophizing about when the third book comes out.

The beginning is slower than the first book, I won't lie. But once it finds its footing, it finds it hard, and suddenly it's midnight and you have responsibilities tomorrow that you are choosing to ignore.

Let me talk about 3 of the the romantic interests.

Ares. Just Ares. The relationship between him and Herais has texture, warmth, actual humor. You understand why she gravitates toward him because frankly so do I, a random reader with no stake in any of this. He is my favorite and I am already dreading whatever the author has planned for him because writers cannot be trusted with characters this good.

Seth, the physically violent disaster from book one, is slightly less of a disaster here. Progress! He begins to show something resembling respect toward Herais, which is the bare minimum, but it is more than he managed before. He needs considerably more groveling, humiliation, and genuine growth as a human being before I am willing to consider him redeemed. Hoping the author takes the harder road and makes him someone who respects people in general, not just the woman he develops feelings for. The alternative would be deeply unimpressive.

Magnus remains... a question mark. He occupies the structural role of main love interest and group leader, and yet something about him still feels unfinished. The other men, for better or worse, have clear personalities. Magnus gives the impression that the author is still in the process of discovering who he actually is.

Does the book have elements I would normally side-eye? Yes. Do I care? I did not care in book one and I care even less now. Five stars.

It ends on a cliffhanger. I spent an entire Sunday looking for similar books to survive the wait. I found nothing. Send help.

This one had me hooked

I read these books over two days and im absolutely hooked. This one ends on a cliffhanger and im hoping the next book doesnt take long to come out. Some of the team have finally pulled their heads out of their backsides. But I love how each of them are developing in their own way. Great story.

Aghhhhhhhhhhh I knew there would be a cliffhanger but not THIS bad!! 😂 Siggy, I need the next book like, today. This is the slowest of slow-burns and I am sooo here for it. I want to bash all of them over the head sometimes (including Herais) but oh my gosh is it amazing.

I giggled, I cried, I sat up because I was super excited, I was fuming at the audacity of some of these men…

I am so so so curious about what's going to happen next.

P.S. This one got quite a but darker, so definitely take the TWs to heart

Sitting here in shock. And anxiously waiting book 3.

This was honestly the most refreshing series I’ve started in the past year. The storyline is unique. The post apocalyptic world is frightening. The characters are interesting. The stakes are real.

Could it use some editing? Yes. But it’s didn’t distract me from the epic storytelling.

I’m going to be in a serious book slump after this so please send along recommendations.

I am convinced the author is mind-controlled me into forgetting I have a real life to attend to. I physically cannot put this book down to do anything productive. Someone, please send help!

In book 2, the prose has reached a whole new level of sophistication. The author doesn't shy away from investing heavily in character arcs. These aren't just tropes; they are living, breathing humans with messy flaws and hard-earned growth. The action sequences? Absolutely elite. The author relentlessly throws one obstacle after another at the protagonists, creating a suffocating tension that had me gasping for air. Honestly, is there any hope left for humanity in this universe?

Also, the narrative is enriched by its sharp exploration of the unique struggles of women in the military, deep-seated political corruption, and the intricate power struggles between the Military, OCO, and rebel factions.

As a fan of slow-burn, I am beyond satisfied. The emotional payoff is profound, and I am dying to see how the author navigates the dynamics with the other MMCs in the upcoming books.

This is easily my top read of 2026—and quite possibly the peak of the genre for years to come. I’m genuinely terrified that I’ll never find another RH series this exceptional again.

I honestly don’t know what I’m going to do with myself until the end of 2026 because this series has an absolute CHOKEHOLD on me.

The pacing, the characters, the world building. Amazing.

I do feel like there is a lot of uncertainty between Herias and her men, and I can’t tell if it’s on purpose but it feels at times that they would honestly prefer to be away from each other. I don’t get the burn the world down for one another vibes from them, but in a way, it makes it more realistic and gritty.

I feel like that uncertainty is what really immerses me into this world because a lot of the decisions that the characters make are at times based on their own futures, their own outcomes, and I appreciate that it’s not just an all-consuming blindness to each other.

I love the character development that makes them all grow as individuals, in different ways. And I love the relationship progressions, which seem natural and not forced. It’s slow burn for sure, but I honestly can’t see it any other way.

I’m in awe of the writing and I know I’ll be reading this over and over again throughout the year until the third book is released.

Very good

1st time author for me (I did read book 1).
The author writes very well - the story is way more detailed & longer than I realized. It was all very interesting, detailed & clever. Though Some parts in this book dragged a bit in spots.

It's very much like an Alien or Aliens type story (I see author even named a soldier Wierzbowski too).

There is a lot of back n forth between the FMC & the guys. None of them can have a fucking conversation, like at all. They are either all insulting to the fmc or constantly taking offense or misunderstanding words or situation. Miscommunication is not a trope i like.
2nd.the names oh good god the names.

Everyone has a 1st & last name, title & nicknames.

I'm a 55 yo women that's had Covid. I can't be expected to remember so many damn names- - there is also a huge amount of secondary people to remember too!

Example-
"The call comes from Vavra this time. Ares gives me a sign he'll be okay, so I move behind him and reach Jules"....
Vavra & Jules is the same guy. He also goes by Julius. At any given time all 3 names are used.

Voss Van Halen who also goes by V. So again all 3 names are used.
Cap Magnus Quade was even worse - back n forth with all 3 names. It's highly confusing.

Non communication.
.....“You said, My death wouldn't change anything for the team. You really meant it?”

“Just say it. You thought I wouldn't fucking care if you died?!”

"I open my lips, but no sound escapes it, as I look at him with a chaos swirling in my head. I want to apologize. I want to explain. I want to thank him for what he's done for me when I needed him most, and I want to scream with tears in my eyes, so he'd know how much it hurt when he said all those cruel things.
And I don't know how to say any of it. How to allow myself to be honest"....

This right the fuck here. Just fucking say it already. OMG the indecisiveness of the FMC drove me crazy. Just talk! Everyone was emotionally stunted & the leading cause of their own misery.
I'm talking to you Quade & Ares!

The men being complete fucking jerks about women, them not understanding how badly women have things with men in the military. The audacity of them being pissy with the FMC for not defending herself - when they all see how Seth speaks to her. What did they fucking think?
And they have yet to acknowledge it.
Quade was the worst of them. He defended Seth. When he tried to scapegoat the FMC. So much gaslighting from every single male in this book....

""They look like giant snails without shells"...those are called slugs.

Ugh, that ending. What i am not getting is why havent they just asked her to be their Sentinel already? Why is Quade doing this? Aren't they all supposed to be lovers anyway? Isn't that expected?

Still not sure how i feel about the FMC.at times she comes across as someone with zero personality, almost like a doormat but worse.

I don't base my reviews on errors or typos. But I was shocked at how many spelling errors in this book. At times it messed up a sentence it was that bad.

And at times i had some clarity issues, understanding or comprehending certain things. Thankfully stuff usually got cleared up later on down the road. But particularly with the nightmare stuff, how the FMC described certain things.

Definitely waiting for book 3.

Mild spoilers ahead⚠️

The cliffhanger 💀🤚🏻. Seriously.

I need book 3 rn. I can't. It's so amazing it hurts. God the character development from book 1 to 2 is incredible. Many things uncovered, bullying is almost non existence, but girl gets herself in even riskier and shitty situation. I mean can't a girl get a break.

What's so funny is the captain. Aka one of the mmc, the head of the team kissed her and got scared that his priorities might changes. So he goes as far as changing the military base to get away from her, but her ending up on the same base is almost funny. Almost. NOT. considering how she got there. It's little nauseating to think how deprived some characters are. But I was sooo glad when they died. Serves them right being eaten by demon. But the writing is so wonderful I got scared on her behalf. It was like I'm not the one reading it but rather being in the scene. I knew something was fishy when she saw his vision of up and down💀

When she was traveling with #deadbeat1 on the car her fear of him is so intense, I got scared during midnight. It was that good. The feelings that explained are so mature.. but there are some typos. Which I ignored given the plot.

And I was so releaved when she got to the base with the mmc. I wish they communicate better with her and not aggravate her. And Ares, man after my own heart. But why does he have to be an asshole all the time. He keeps fucking up with his big mouth. But he better be ready to grovel in the next book. I know it's going to take him some time and effort to be forgiven.

And the spice 🔥💥🤌🏼. Hot. Eagerly waiting for her to get it on with everyone. I don't know if it'll happen it with Seth. But I'm soooo eager to see his pov. And he is always so angry and grumpy I wonder if gets as angry and as worked up in bed with her. When everyone tries to coddle her, he pushes her to his limit. He believes something In her that even she doesn't know she's capable of. I want to see his possessive side so bad. I just know he's going to get it bad for her.

And again the cliffhanger. THAT little bit*h. Why do they have to get her back. They know how incompetent she is. Unless and annoying. And once again I think Herais is going to save them all. I can't wait till end of 2026 😖.

Oh Wow, that's not what I expected, but I'll take it! I couldn't put it down, even though the start is quite slow and we do not see any action for the first I'd say 25% of the book. But boy, when the action starts, it just doesn't stop.

I really appreciate that battles with demons aren't just fillers between romantic moments. Every action-sequence has a meaning, consequences, introduces a new problem or mystery. They also highlight the characters assets and weaknesses. I'm not a big fan of too much action in Romance books and I often skip them. Usually it feels like they don't offer any new information about the characters, but here it was the opposite. We get to know the characters through the decisions they make on the battlefield and it's so fresh and fun to read. The author really has some fun, mixing different genres in a span of one book, because we have romantic scenes, dramatic scenes, scenes taken from court-room dramas, thrillers, mystery novels, and my personal favorite, horror stories. There's one particular scene that chilled my blood when I read it and I was literally holding my breath the entire time.

The writing definitely improved compared to the first part. I loved how real the characters felt, all of them flawed somehow, often irritating with their choices or insecurities or clinging to some past traumas, but I think them overcoming those flaws is going to be one of the main points in the plot in the future. I was going to take one star from my rating for lack of explanations to some of the mysteries from the previous book (instead we get even more questions and unexplained phenomena), but then read that it's going to be a six-book series and it feels like author is going to expand the world even more. So I'm going to patiently wait, though not without effort, because the book - again! - ends on a cliffhanger.

And I just can't wait for another part!

PS. The romantic development was a slow burn, one of the slowest I've read lately, but the payoff made it absolutely worth the wait! The confession was brilliant. Not once the word "love" was used, yet it felt so meaningful and beautiful I was in tears.

The writing for these two books is a complete disaster. I mean, misspellings, missing articles, incorrect prepositions. Word selections that don't even make sense. And yet, I kept reading. Because the mistakes felt like they stemmed from translations. Like they may have been written in a different language and then translated (badly) to English? Maybe I'm wrong, but that bothers me less.

If you take away all my writing complaints and this series is a masterpiece. I read it a while back and I'm just getting around to doing my review. But I remember staying up hours past my bedtime because I couldn't put them down.

The storyline is amazing. Addicting. The worldbuilding is stellar. The romance is the slowest of slow burns and it works here. It's organic and based on shared trauma and mutual respect.

One of the MMCs is downright terrible, but he might be redeemable? Maybe? Another is that annoying guy who will break your heart because he knows what's good for you better than you do. Sigh. The remaining three guys are great. All of them were flawed, complex characters and all felt distinct from each other and from other books.

The FMC is a bit of a doormat, but I didn't mind that. Because she's giving us her thought process as she's backing down, and telling us why she thinks de-escalation is the answer in the moment. I need more of this in FMCs. Just tell me that you've considered multiple options and your reason for choosing one, and I'm right there with you.

This is one series, where I will be hitting Add to Library the moment book three shows up on Amazon. Can't wait!

I should name you the Queen of Cliffhangers because you are a cruel, cruel narrator, Sigrun!

Of course, I'm kidding—I absolutely loved Hearing Through Silence.

This installment expands the world in all the right ways. We get a much deeper understanding of the organizations, politics, and tensions driving the story, while also spending more time with the characters themselves. The world-building feels richer, the stakes feel higher, and there are so many layers to uncover.

One of my favourite aspects of this book was getting to know the characters beyond their roles and responsibilities. Watching their relationships develop, seeing different sides of their personalities, and understanding what motivates them made me even more invested in their journeys.

The pacing kept me hooked from beginning to end, and just when I thought I knew where things were heading, the story reminded me not to get too comfortable. There were several moments that left me shocked, anxious, and eager to keep turning the pages.

This book was thrilling, emotional, and impossible to put down. Now I'm left impatiently waiting for Book 3 and wondering how on earth I'm supposed to recover after that ending!.

Book 2 was fine. I still like the FMC. Idk if I’ll read book 3 though. I’d love for these books to get a proper edit.
This series is making me realize how I need more avoidant style FMCs who will not chase MMCs or ask for affection or interest and don’t forgive easily.
