Oh, it was amazing!
I love the romance development with John Merritt and Maggie/Margaret.
I loved the sweet, wholesome found family moments
(And no big spoilers, but I love that Lillian, the FMC’s older sister to Maggie, taking accountability for not communicating and responding to the concerned letters (kinda like texting back then) and she’s so sweet and she’s like, I’m sorry, I was not aware of your marriage arrangement and I messed up, but I love being your sister and I’m going to actively improve our relationship as sisters.).
(I always will love the accountability trope!) :)
Also, heads up, there is an unplanned pregnancy trope (with Lillian, not Maggie) and it is handled in a respectful way.
There is also some content considerations- the FMC’s mom and dad, the Lord and Lasy Astleys, are really strict and they rush Maggie to get married (and in some ways, they also… just don’t act like they respect her. They say she’s got to get the marriage done quickly. They say she’s extremely obedient/compliant (which, while it’s kinda nice in moderation, if a person does this, it could be a psychology sign of extreme anxiety, people pleasing tendencies, and fear of going to do anything related to finding their independence if it means that their parents would not approve of. If that applies to you or to someone you know, I’m so sorry. You did not need to have that: you just needed some godly support and some godly, realistic discipline that doesn’t make you feel micromanaged by others.

I read this book first and didn’t feel like I was missing anything from the prior book but I just love those characters that I want to read their book! 5⭐️✨

While there is some inspiration from Cinderella, I liked that this story wasn’t a beat for beat retelling. It kept the plot from becoming too predictable.
Margaret continually struggled with self-doubt, which wasn’t surprising given the cutting remarks she’s had to endure and the environment she grew up in.
But with the support of her new husband and in-laws, she slowly became more sure of herself (both as John’s wife and as the Countess of Faversham).
Margaret’s joy and kindness caught John’s attention from the very beginning. A single unguarded moment of laughter. Not her looks or any of the skills society deemed important.
Their own fears and insecurities sometimes prevented them from properly communicating with each other, but they found their way in the end.
I loved all the little ways John tried to show Margaret he cared, from exhilarating horseback rides to new sheet music.

Lady Merrit was a surprise for me. It was a great read, but what stood out most was how simple and clear the characters' "issues" were. I read a lot of historical fiction, and they are either inaccurate or just smut lately, but this one was clean, precise, and worth the time invested.

August 1, 2026I received an advance reader copy of A Lady of Merit, and having not read the first book in the series, it wasn’t necessary, but now I’m eager to go back and read the first.
I found myself invested in Margaret and John and was eager to see how their stories would unfold. There was a few unexpected twists that kept me engaged, and made it difficult to put down.
One of the things I enjoyed most was the emphasis on faith, family, and redemption. The sibling relationships were especially heartwarming, and I appreciated how the story explored overcoming insecurities, extending grace, and learning to trust God’s plan. The romance developed at a natural pace and was very sweet.
I found myself invested in Margaret and John and was eager to see how their stories would unfold. There was a few unexpected twists that kept me engaged, and made it difficult to put down.
One of the things I enjoyed most was the emphasis on faith, family, and redemption. This marriage of convenience book has lots of family, a mysterious blackmailer, and a sweet romance. There were a few times that I was screaming inside “Just talk to each other!”
Margaret is joyful, caring, and playful. Her battle with self-doubt and feeling like she belongs pulled at my heartstrings. I loved the healing and strength she found because of John. I loved that he always saw her true self, encouraged and created situations where she felt comfortable being her true self. I loved Ellen and Henry! Such sweet kids and their relationship with “Maggie” was delightful. John is patient, gentle, and determined. He was absolutely smitten from his very first glimpse. His determination to know Margaret and make her happy was so sweet. I loved all of the things he did to show her how special she was and how much he loved her. I was so happy for the healing and happiness he found. I loved that his friendship with Luke and Clara is still amazing. His interactions with Ellen and Henry were so fun.

All her life, Margaret has never known pure love and adoration from anyone but her little siblings. Her needs and desires are never considered, and she has spent her whole life being the obedient daughter, doing whatever her parents wanted her to do, fulfilling her “duties” regardless of whether they supported her well-being.
She ironically only finds her freedom when she ends up married to John at the behest of her parents. She finally has a family who values her as her own person, who wants her to be at peace with her life. At first Margaret worries about whether John cares about her in that way, and he worries that she will accept any romantic and emotional advances from him just because she has always done whatever others wanted from her.
This is the first book I’ve read with a theme like this where the characters’ eyes and minds were open to see the patterns in each other’s behavior in regards to themselves. Margaret questions John’s attitude toward her because of some mixed signaling from a specific incident, but when they then spend more time together right after, even without a conversation about it, she is able to see past that uncertainty. She can recognize the unmistakable pleasure he takes in her company and realize that, whatever his side of what happened, he does care about her and enjoy being with her. In the words of the book, “The voice inside might have told her she was unwanted, but being with John had dispelled that voice. After today, she knew John cared for her, and no one, not even herself, could convince her it wasn’t true.” John is eventually able to think calmly and evaluate Margaret’s behavior across different situations and discern the difference between the things she does out of obligation or expectation and the things she genuinely wants to do.

Rosecrest had three dining rooms, a large formal, a small formal, and the family dining room. Today’s party was not nearly big enough for the large room, but was slightly cramped in the smaller one.
So it should have been on the large one. The point isn’t to fill the room but to have enough room.
Why is she telling me about the chicken? Wouldn’t that be a comment for the lady of the … oh … I am the lady of the house. Margaret knew it was true, but she still had a hard time remembering—and believing—it.

While it made her uncomfortable, there was no denying that John was going above and beyond the mark to see to her personal care, and that was quite flattering.

In English society, that was often the first thing to know about a person and certainly something a wife should know about her husband. “Would you like cream or sugar?” She was grateful it was only the two of them so no one else had to witness what an incompetent woman she was.

Absolutely fabulous!
I loved this second book of the Rosecrest series just as much as the first. It starts with a bang which sends Maggie Astley propelling into the London season in desperate need of a match. Surprisingly, she becomes the object of the Earl of Faversham's desire after hearing her laughter and the two quickly end up married.
The two main characters go on a journey of self-discovery while in a brand new marriage with a practical stranger. My heart absolutely ached for Maggie as she debated whether she was someone of worth after being "trained" by her father to be the perfect wife. Thank goodness for John's goodness! But the sweet earl had his own misgivings and insecurities after the death of his father. I loved how these two grew together throughout the story and also helped solve a couple of sneaky "mysteries" along the way. There is something so special when an author delivers on an imperfect couple. The way they learn to treasure the other, with many, many misunderstandings along the way, made for such an enjoyable read.
I'll be stayed tuned for the rest of the series! I love when an author can keep me hooked and Ms Davis set up the next story to already be an emotional one. I'm there!

This was a joy to read. I came to it on Kindle Unlimited after reading and enjoying Kiylee Davis first Rosecrest novel A Lord of Valor and was cheering for Margaret from the very first page.
I have struggled with perfectionism for most of my life, so could really identify with someone struggling to believe that they have worth and merit. Yes, sometimes she and the male lead, her husband John, wound me up! Their journey through an arranged marriage (mild spoiler: it turns out the arranging might not have been needed!) would have been much the smoother if they mastered the simple art of talking to each other.
What I particularly loved was that this is a warm, unaffected love story. I enjoy couples who delight in each other and delight in life, and Margaret and John gave me plenty of that. The surrounding cast is lovely, too, and I really appreciate that the author keeps the romance high and the spice absent.
Readers looking for period-authentic, Austen-style prose won't find that here, but I didn't consider that a flaw at all. The writing is accessible, the story has plenty of heart, and I would happily recommend it even to readers who don't normally reach for romance.
I binged the book during a medical appointment, and it lifted my spirits enormously. Sometimes that's exactly what you want from a story.

What I particularly loved was that this is a warm, unaffected love story. I enjoy couples who delight in each other and delight in life, and Margaret and John gave me plenty of that. The surrounding cast is lovely, too, and I really appreciate that the author keeps the romance high and the spice absent.
Readers looking for period-authentic, Austen-style prose won't find that here, but I didn't consider that a flaw at all. The writing is accessible, the story has plenty of heart, and I would happily recommend it even to readers who don't normally reach for romance.
I binged the book during a medical appointment, and it lifted my spirits enormously. Sometimes that's exactly what you want from a story.

This is the second book in the Rosecrest Estate series. I enjoyed this story of Margaret and John. Their beginning was cute and entertaining. It moved along very quickly but I continued waiting for the tension or drama to begin. There was some obvious tension of a newly married couple but nothing that made you bite your nails until the very end and that was not even completely solved. I did receive an ARC copy so I hope the last threatening letter was addressed in the final version.
In my opinion, if you were looking for a sweet, charming historical romance, that is clean and low drama, this is the perfect book for you. It really is a lovely story and will warm your heart. I am intrigued with the idea of the next book in the series.

This book ⬆️⬆️ was so much fun to read! John Merritt is one amazing guy. He’s charming, funny, and genuinely cares about others. I loved him in A Lord of Valor, the first book in the Rosecrest series, and he was just as amazing in A Lady of Merit. Maggie was a real gem. She tries so hard to please everyone else that it takes her a while to discover her own self-worth. One of my favorite aspects of the book was how quickly John was able to see the real Maggie and fall completely in love with her. That being said, the story still has a slow-burn feel to it.
This story has a strong focus on family. The Merritts will take you in and treat you like family, and Maggie’s siblings were another favorite part of mine. I loved that they played such a big role in the story.
It was also fun to see Clara and Luke from the first book and get more of their story!

This is the 2nd book in the series.
The FMC has always been invisible compare to her sister, but when her sister causes a scandal, its up to her to help her family survive it.
The MMC hasnt been the same since his fathers passing, he needs to find himself a wife but not just for an heir, he needs someone to help him be happy again.
I enjoyed reading this book and would recommend reading it.

A nice book with a lot of angst with the main couple. They were very innocent and trying to figure out their relationship. Clean, moves slowly but I enjoyed it. I recommend it. Cheering for Margaret and John!

I loved John and Margaret's story. I thought it was so cute how John pretty much falls in love with her at first sight, and Clara is so excited, she plans a ball for John to meet her right away. I also liked how John may have fallen in love with her at first sight, but was content to go at her pace when he found out how nervous she was. I loved Margaret's little sister too.
I thought it made no sense how Margaret got so angry when John told her he had seen her playing with her sister in her parents' garden and Clara had arranged the ball on purpose so he could meet her. What was she angry about? Margaret admits herself that the garden was easily visible from the road, so it's not as if John was sneaking about where he shouldn't be. He basically tells her that he fell for her right away and that he wanted to meet her so badly, he asked his sister to make it happen. What's to be angry about in that? But she flies off the handle and refuses to talk to him for a while. He is left (very understandably!) confused, and wondering what he did wrong. I was glad that it was not swept under the rug, and Margaret does admit later that she shouldn't have reacted that way and apologizes for it. It always bothers me when the heroine has a meltdown for a stupid reason and never acknowledges it afterward, so I'm glad that didn't happen here.
I hated Lillian. She was so selfish! I didn't mind her running away, though her parents' non-reaction was very strange, and I didn't even mind her not believing John right away when he came to help her. But there was no reason for her to cut Margaret out of her life like she did! Of course she wants her own life, but Margaret wasn't trying to control her! Lillian could have her own life, and still have her sister in it! According to the little sister, this selfishness was not a new development.
As with the previous book in this series, the characters were called by their names rather than their titles, which was a little annoying, but the thing that really dragged down this book for me, though, was the spelling errors. I can handle a few and not really mind, but there were so many! Not obscure or difficult words either; most of them were pretty glaring. Like describing a house, saying it was built with stones of a pinkish 'hew', (!) and that John and Margaret 'peaked' into the nursery! That's only two, but there were so many more, it really pulled me out of the story.
Please, for the love of your readers' sanity, hire a proofreader next time! I might have given this book five stars if it weren't for all the mistakes. I don't remember there being so many in the first book.

This is the second book I’ve read by this author, and I’ve enjoyed both do them. Kiylee has a really great writing style—with interesting stories, engaging characters, and funny banter and memorable situations. It was a great distraction while I was sick, and I read it in two days.
When some hints of “insta-love” showed up, I was bummed. But! The insta-love was more like “insta-attraction/interest” which is understandable and palatable, and it was then used as a jumping block for building an actual relationship based on time together and getting to know each other.

Despite this,I truly did enjoy and highly recommend this story—part of why I share my feelings above as this author is already so fantastic that I can see she has even more potential!

Sometimes a second book in a series can be a bit of a disappointment after reading the first. That is not the case with this second book in the Rosecrest Estate series, however; Maggie and John's story has stolen my heart!

There were a couple of instances where the story could have devolved into cliches but the author put her own spin on events and kept the tropes fresh and unique to this novel.

A Lady of Merit is like a lovely walk in the park. It felt comfortable, with familiar characters met in book 1, but new things to explore along the way. Seeing Rosecrest from both John's and Margaret's eyes was refreshing and really brought the estate to life. And Violet, oh, I liked her!
He falls first. Whirlwind wedding. Courtship after marriage. Miscommunications ensue. As with book 1, kisses only, very lightly described. No spice. Some lovely hand-flex type moments between John and Margaret though.
I found myself a little tired of Margaret's ping-ponging between loving her new life and doubting herself and squelching who she was. I would have liked her better if she had just embraced the parts of the new life that she loved, because as John determines late in the book, he actually can offer her much of what she longs for. What? Go figure. It's a HEA after all.
I enjoyed seeing familiar characters return from book 1, A Lady of Valor, but there were no spoilers if you read this first. I did feel like Luke and Clara fell a little flat here, compared to how vibrant they were in book 1, possibly because the author wrote this book first.

What factor is most important in choosing a spouse? For Lord Merritt, it was a laugh- a beautiful, guileless sound that revealed a truly loving heart. As the match of the season, he could’ve chosen a woman with a huge dowry or a gorgeous face or an extravagant wardrobe. But he wanted to find “a lady of merit” as his father had, and he knew that she would have a loving and unselfish heart. For him, Margaret’s unstudied laughter as she played with her younger siblings revealed just such a heart. It was interesting to see the lengths he went to in order to meet and marry the girl who saw herself as “plain, insignificant Margaret, the girl who felt she could never belong.”
This is a gentle and chaste romance that has the feeling of an arranged marriage, and yet the thrill of a Cinderella story. I dearly enjoyed this second installment of Rosecrest Estate. The author shows a lot of promise! It was a very easy, cozy read with a touch of drama and miscommunication to keep you invested right through the whole book. I love how John's playfulness ultimately helps Maggie be herself in all aspects of her life, not hiding her personality away in the privacy of her relationship with her siblings, and how loving Maggie helps John open back up after the heartbreak of losing his father. How sweet to know we can be loved even when we don't feel loveable or worthy of love. Something to work on in my opinion would be more authentic conversational language. Also, in one place John tells Maggie that the staff practiced lining up to welcome her to Rosecrest and "deciding who would stand where." They would have stood according to where they rank in service, no deciding needed. I noticed a couple of things like that. But overall a very sweet book. The very last bit of the epilogue made me teary eyed and I will look forward to reading the next installment.

The story features a hasty marriage followed by a ‘getting to know you’ dynamic. I love when authors show us the perspective of both main characters, which she does beautifully. The point of view flips back and forth a bit more frequently than what I’m used to, but after a few chapters I was so engrossed in the story and chemistry that I didn’t even notice anymore.
I couldn’t put the book down, finishing it in just a few days. The length and pacing was perfect. While some plot lines were predictable (in a comfortable way) there was some surprising twists which made it that much more enjoyable. It was a wonderful sweet, clean regency romance.

As someone who greatly enjoyed Kiylee's first book in the Rosecrest Estate series I will say that this second installment was absolutely perfect. It was filled with wit and mystery which managed to keep my attention the whole time I was reading it. You really have to feel for the main heroine Margaret as she is very self conscious about herself and worried about making the wrong move. You also have to admire John for going out of his way to make his new wife as comfortable as possible while dealing with his own issues.
As mentioned Margaret hasn't had much luck with fitting in and of course her parents pressuring her to secure a marriage for her. John of course sweeps in and offers her a promising future at Rosecrest. She is welcomed with open arms and both her and John slowly start to build their relationship. However, there are outside mysteries such as her sister who ran away to get married and John himself who starts recieving anonymous letters. Will they be able to get to the bottom of things before it threatens their relationship?

Ok! So I absolutely adore this cutie author, Kiylee Davis! And getting to read A Lady of Merit was extra special! And OH MY GOODNESS, I loved this book! I especially loved knowing that parts of Margaret and John’s story mirrored a little bit of Kiylee’s own love story! It made all those sweet moments feel even more special! Every character was just so lovable, but my heart especially melted watching Margaret, who is so used to taking care of everyone else, finally have someone who wanted to take care of HER!
Margaret and John were absolutely precious together! Their marriage of convenience, growing friendship, and slow build romance gave me ALL the warm fuzzies, and I loved watching Margaret discover that she deserved to be loved, supported, and simply allowed to be herself! This is a sweet regency story. Remembering that it is a story, not real life, then one can fathom that John Merritt is as wonderful as that. Always thinking of his lady and seeing in her what she does not see for herself. Were it only real-life! But isn't that part of what stories are -- delving into the fairytale and taking what we need for the moment. Never a moment to be embarrassed, but totally a great read.
While I was not a BETA reader, I do have to list the egregious reason for not being able, in clear conscience to give this book a 5-star. I pinned three places where the same error occurred. When one puts on clothes, it is called "donning clothing" or "to don" my jacket. The writer, three times in various places in the book, used the word "dawn". Even though I seldom give 5-stars; this was reason enough to not even consider it.

Kiylee has a great writing style. It flowed together nicely with the first book in the series. While I found the plot to be predictable, the author made each character so likable and relatable that it made me want to read more. I read book 1 of this series. I enjoyed book 2 a bit more than book 1. I personally like a mystery element and a bit of drama, which this book had. I would say that while I rejoiced with characters in their happiness I did not fall in love with the characters as I have with other characters in other historical romance novels. What would have brought Margaret and John's story to 5 stars for me would have been a bit more mystery and drama and a mystery that was not so easily solved by the reader before it was revealed to the characters. I also would have liked a bit more length to the story to allow for just a bit more character development. Overall I would recommend this book to the plethora of readers who appreciate lighter reads than I generally choose.

I LOVED this book! Such a beautiful regency story that is loosely based on a fairytale (if you know you know). I thought all of the characters were well written, and the plot was pretty unique even though this is a romance book. I read a couple of reviews here that said that the main heroine is too self-depreciating. I disagree. Yes, the heroine is self-depreciating, but it is perfectly understandable given the environment she grew up in. I didn't find it unrealistic or annoying in the slightest. In fact, one of my favorite aspects of the book was seeing her self-love and confidence increase. If you're on the fence with this book, give it a go! I read it all in one day because I couldn't put it down. I later read it to my husband on a long road trip, and he also loved it even though it is outside of his usual genre. We both laughed and cried multiple times. Highly recommend!

While this book is in a series, reading the first one is not entirely necessary. Certainly it provides character and setting background, but can be read alone.
I really enjoyed reading this tale. The contract between the two families is so astute, and provides a deeper understanding of reactions and feelings, especially the FMC. She has grown up in a basically loveless home (at least in terms of parents) and was always expected to obey and ensure that appearances and reputation were of foremost importance.
Being introduced into a loving, compassionate environment, she is unsure of her place, and thinks she needs to live up to the standards she imagines they want from her.
How happy she finally becomes to realize that she can be herself and live a joyous life with her new husband.
I really enjoyed reading this tale. The contract between the two families is so astute, and provides a deeper understanding of reactions and feelings, especially the FMC. She has grown up in a basically loveless home (at least in terms of parents) and was always expected to obey and ensure that appearances and reputation were of foremost importance.
Being introduced into a loving, compassionate environment, she is unsure of her place, and thinks she needs to live up to the standards she imagines they want from her.
How happy she finally becomes to realize that she can be herself and live a joyous life with her new husband.

I’m so happy to see John come out of his self imposed shell and become the man he was meant to be. How would I respond if the duty of a title and all it entails were thrust upon me?
I love how he’s drawn to Maggie because of her authentic laughter as he passes by. He knows the unfiltered joy is something he needs and he’s determined to go after it.
I don’t alway enjoy instalove stories but this book is so well written that John’s immediate attraction doesn’t feel forced. The characters relate to each other in a way that feels natural.
This is a sweet romance with a storyline that’s a bit different which drew me in and had me invested in the outcome.
