I Haunt it That Way is a cozy mystery paranormal second chance romance
FMC Thora has purchased her family's mountain cabin Juniper, planning to start a new journey, and write her first novel. As she is settling into her solitude, none other than MMC Lee Halliday drives up to the cabin to visit her deceased uncle. Not only is Lee her ex-husbands best friend, she also doesn't really like him. Thora decides to let Lee stay a few days to say his "goodbyes" to Uncle George. But, this planned cozy retreat turns into a creepy, weird, and unexplainable paranormal events, and an unexpected one bed situation.
Ah, poor Thora, so excited to finally start this next chapter in her life, and she gets stuck with what seems to possibly be a haunted cabin, and Lee who she begrudgingly is starting to like. The more she learns about Lee, and his reasons for helping out her Uncle, the more she realizes he isn't such a bad guy. He also seems to be more attentive of her in just a few days than her ex-husband had been in years.
When Thora first arrived at Juniper, it sounds like the perfect fall getaway, and even I imagined visiting. I would personally have left that mountain after that first night and the mysterious phone call. When each day brings some new weird occurrence, I cannot believe Thora and Lee stayed! To me it felt like the cabin was trying to get rid of them, but they didn't seem to get the message. I feel like Thora grows a lot throughout this story, finally finding more of her true self, as well as getting even closer with her cousin Mack who lives near. Despite the haunted cabin aspect of the house, it would also be really fun to go through and find unexpected treasures (maybe not the bells haha). I maybe would have only visited during the day, if it was me, to try and avoid the strange events of the evenings.
While the story has some sad elements, I think it is such a fun and cozy-creepy romance. I am so glad that Thora finally gets to experience life and love.

I liked Lee and Thora. How their relationship was. Their history and reasons for not progressing anything before.
I really liked Lee’s temperament and his purposeful actions.
I loved the title, it attracted my poor millennial soul.
If anything, I felt like the story could be longer. This would give more time, as the progress of the relationship felt a little sudden at points and didn’t seem as organic. Which was a shame as there were other points where it was and it worked well.

This had such great fall ambiance. Loved the setting and thought the “haunting” elements were done really well. When that wasn’t happened I was bored though. I didn’t like the characters. The H makes too many excuses for the awful h. I didn’t like any of the reasons the h had for being mean and hateful to the H. The both of them overanalyzed things and there was way too much “therapy speak” for my personal taste. I got tired of how much she called herself fat, we get it already. They made me cringe but this is totally a personal taste thing and others may like this a lot more.

This was just fine- nothing remarkable or life changing. I really wanted to enjoy this spooky fall romance but the romance felt forced and the spooky aspect was not fully fleshed out and let me having more questions than answers.
I wanted more- this book takes place mainly over a week and thus, everything felt rushed. Thora and Lee's romance? Let's cram every part of the relationship into just a week. And let's add some shenanigans going on in the old house where they are staying. Is it a ghost? Is something nefarious going on? Who knows! Definitely not Thora or Lee!
I did feel like the ex had way too much of a role in this story- he should definitely have been left in the past. I enjoyed learning about Thora's boss and found her to be interesting, but I think Thora did give herself to her job a little too much.
All in all, this had a lot going on and nothing felt completed. I needed a little more focus on just a few things instead of so many side characters where I became more interested in their stories instead of the MCs. The good news is that this is a quick read and does have some fall cozy vibes that were enjoyable to read. I really like the setting and the family aspect of the story.

I had high hopes for this one. The spooky cabin setting, forced proximity and enemies to lovers sounded like the perfect autumn read. Unfortunately it didn't deliver.
I did not care for the FMC, Thorna. Especially her constant inner thoughts criticizing her ex husband. It went on the ENTIRE book. Lee was an okay character, but I didn't feel the chemistry between Lee and Thorna. Their conversations, their humor, everything just fell flat. The side characters were more annoying than anything.
I wanted to DNF this a few times, but pushed through. I liked the paranormal aspects and some things happening in the cabin had me on the edge of my seat and I had to find out what happened. The ending redeemed it a little bit, but I wasn't a fan of any of the characters.
The narrator, Ferdelle Capistrano did a fantastic job. The audio quality was great and the voice was fitting the vibe of the story.

This was FUN. It was cozy mystery mixed with paranormal shenanigans and spicy romance all in one. I absolutely loved Lee so much. He was a wonderful MMC. The love he showed not only for her but for her uncle was so stinking cute you can’t help but want him to succeed in everything. Her ex, though, no thank you. He was very much a narcissist and we don’t Stan for a narcissist.
This book absolutely leaned toward more serious tone rather than a fun uplifting one but that was ok for me. I enjoyed the journey of learning about George and all the ways he was let down by his family. Heartbreaking really. #JusticeForGeorge 😩

Unfortunately, this one wasn’t for me.
The ghost calls were genuinely creepy, and the paranormal elements kept me interested, but I struggled with the characters and the romance. The relationship between Thora and Lee felt forced to me, and I never fully connected with their dynamic.
I also found myself frustrated by how much attention was given to Cody and his feelings throughout the story. Considering his actions as both a friend and husband, the level of concern and consideration shown toward him didn’t make much sense to me.
At nearly 80% into the book, I was still waiting for meaningful growth from Thora, but I found her difficult to root for and often frustrating. Lee, despite being one of the kinder and more reasonable characters in the story, felt surprisingly passive. I kept waiting for more emotion, passion, or fire from him, but he remained fairly nonchalant throughout.
While the creepy atmosphere worked well, the characters and romance ultimately prevented this one from landing for me.

For 70% of the book, it felt like the FMC talked more about her ex husband than she did about the MMC.
I picked this up thinking it was an enemies or at least dislike to lovers trope, only to find out that they hook up on day three in the mansion.

I struggled a little bit getting into the writing style of this one, but the story itself was really fun and engaging. I loved the secluded haunted cabin setting and the mysterious vibes. The author does a great job at blending cozy, spooky, and romantic elements making for a really enjoyable read.

This was hauntingly goood! I loved this book! Such a fun story full of romance, deep emotional development, past acquaintances throwing a wrench in things for a newly divorced FMC, and familial ties that bring two unlikely individuals together.
There are some fun tropes in this book that I thought were tastefully done with forced proximity in Thora’s *new* cabin. I loved the ghost vibe and the feeling of an October night with some creepy sounds from someone or something that may or may not want you there…
Lee and Thora are complicated from the beginning because of their connections and past. I found their relationship completely realistic and Thora’s inner monologue when she saw him for the first time was hilarious! The realistic nature of all of these characters felt refreshing and easy to read and empathize with. I loved how messy at times processing the things of the past were for both of the characters.
Ferdelle Capistrano was a perfect narrator for this story! I loved her for Lee and Thora as tension grew and ghostly adventures began! It was Boo-tifully done and is a perfect fall read! 👻

I’ll be honest, the cover and the title are what attracted me to the book, and I didn’t even read the synopsis properly, I dived straight in basically blind. And I loved loved loved it! I haven’t read a paranormal romance that actually made me grip my Kindle in so long.
This book encompassed mystery, creepiness and romance really well, jumping from one to another but without feeling random or forced.

Spookier than I was expecting which was a welcome surprise! This is the perfect read to pick up as we transition into Autumn - the setting is to die for with the encroaching, creepy Autumn forest, the more than a fixer-upper cabin, and just the way Isabelle describes the world to us. I loved "Antique bottles caught the scant sunlight penetrating the forest canopy and glowed like gemstones." I could see everything I was reading in my minds eye clear as day!

I haven’t read anything by this author before and had such a pleasant experience with her writing !
All the characters in this book were so fun , especially Mack with her humour. I’d have to say I do have a soft spot for Lee too!
I loved the paranormal aspect but wish we saw a little more of the spooky ghosts doing things throughout the house.
The plot was fun to follow but again I just wish we had a little more.
Overall I had a great time with this book and enjoyed the way this book ended too.

Firstly, I want to say thank you to Harlequin Afterglow Books, NetGalley, and Isabelle Popp for providing me with an ARC.
I really wanted to love this one, but it ended up being just okay for me. The premise sounded right up my alley, and there were definitely parts I enjoyed, but I never fully connected with the characters. Because of that, I found it hard to get emotionally invested in what was happening, and a lot of the story felt a bit underwhelming.
The spice was good, and I enjoyed those scenes, but I wanted more from the characters and the overall story. I kept waiting for things to click for me, and unfortunately they never really did.

This one was just okay for me, mostly because it wasn’t at all what I was expecting. The description inferred a fun paranormal romp, but I found it to be much heavier, delving into themes that felt somewhat disconnected from what was advertised.
I received a complimentary ALC from the Hive program via NetGalley, which gave me the opportunity to share my voluntary thoughts. I was looking for a laid-back, fun romance, and the title play involving the boy and the song pulled me in, but unfortunately, that was about as far as that connection went.
Ferdelle Capistrano narrated the audiobook, and she did a solid job. She has a distinct voice that felt appropriate for the FMC, and she maintained a decent speed at 1x. However, as someone who prefers to read at increased speeds, this was a little more challenging for me because her voice became distorted when sped up, which is something that usually doesn’t happen for me.

Lee drives up to Thora’s dead uncle’s mountain cabin because, as far as Lee knows, the dead uncle has been CALLING HIM, and Thora’s response is somehow not “we are leaving immediately and discussing this from a Marriott.” She has just bought Juniper back from the family, she is newly divorced, she finally has enough money to stop organizing her life around other people, and she wants to sit in the woods and write. That is the plan. Instead she gets Lee Halliday, her ex-husband’s best friend, standing in the driveway talking about recent conversations with a man who has been dead for years. I would like to congratulate the cabin on destroying the concept of a peaceful fresh start before Thora has fully unpacked.
The Lee situation gets ridiculous almost immediately because Thora keeps referring to this man as her nemesis, and Lee is just wandering around repairing things and being considerate. Sir, could you participate in the feud? She has years of annoyance ready to go and you are making this embarrassing. He knew her in college, he knew her ex Cody, he had his own relationship with Uncle George, and then it comes out that Lee has been carrying feelings for Thora for YEARS without doing anything about them because she was with his best friend. So Thora is trying to maintain “I cannot stand this man” while slowly discovering that he has apparently spent most of their shared history behaving better than the husband she actually chose. Awkward.
And Juniper is not helping. The house keeps doing things no house needs to be doing. Phones ring that should not ring. Rooms turn cold. A doorknob gets mysteriously warm. An owl gets involved. There is a deeply upsetting situation with the remains of a rotisserie chicken. At some point you have to stop calling a property “quirky” and accept that it is communicating. Thora and Lee respond to all this by continuing to sleep there because they are apparently much more committed to home renovation than I am to remaining alive.
The romance is where I kept having arguments with Thora in my head. Lee is down horrendous. That part is clear. He has been down horrendous quietly, respectfully, and for an amount of time that should qualify him for some kind of loyalty program. Thora, meanwhile, can go from “I think you might be responsible for this upsetting thing” to “perhaps I have misunderstood you for years” to sexual tension at a speed that made me check whether I had accidentally skipped an audio chapter. There is forced proximity. There is one bed. There is very good reason for two people who have been circling each other forever to finally stop circling. I just needed Thora’s emotional GPS to reroute a little less aggressively.
Also, these two can TALK. About everything. Every insecurity gets named. Every misunderstanding gets unpacked. Every emotional wound gets presented for discussion. At first I was glad because, yes, adults using their words, beautiful. Then I started feeling like I had accidentally joined a very competent couples therapy session in a haunted cabin. Sometimes I wanted one of them to just be irrational for a minute and make the other person mad. We can process it later. There is a ghost on the premises. Priorities.
The ghost part kept pulling me back in because the questions around George and Juniper were much stranger than I expected. Lee thinks he has been speaking to George. Thora knows George is dead. The house keeps staging little paranormal incidents like it has a calendar. And there are enough odd connections between Lee, George, Thora, and the cabin that I kept waiting for the whole thing to snap into place. When it does, the explanation is not the one I had built in my head, which I liked. I just wish the book had spent more time letting that weirdness breathe because every time Juniper got creepy, I was suddenly much more alert.
Thora herself made more sense to me once I stopped waiting for her to become the breezy heroine the title made me expect. She is not breezy. This woman is grieving an entire collection of endings. Her marriage ended. George died. Her boss died. She has money and freedom now, but both arrived because something else was lost first. She keeps trying to make Juniper mean “new beginning,” when half the time she is really standing in a house full of people she misses and trying to decide what belongs to her now. That hurt a little. Then the phone would ring again and I would return to yelling at everybody to leave.
Since I did I Haunt It That Way on audio, Ferdelle Capistrano mattered a lot here, and she kept me with Thora even when Thora was testing me. Her voice fits that slightly weary, prickly, trying-to-start-over energy, and she handles the eerie cabin moments without turning them into haunted-house camp. I did sometimes want more bite or emotional separation when Thora and Lee were really going at each other, but this was an easy listen and the creepy pieces came through especially well. I can absolutely see why some listeners connected more strongly with the audiobook than the romance itself.
By the end I was sitting at 3 stars. Lee worked for me. Juniper worked for me. The dead-uncle phone situation VERY MUCH worked for me. Thora and I had disagreements. The romance occasionally arrived at emotional resolution before I had finished being annoyed, and I wanted the haunting to take up more room because that was where I was having the most fun. Still, this is under eight hours, Ferdelle Capistrano keeps it moving, and there is something deeply satisfying about listening to two emotionally complicated adults renovate a cabin while the supernatural keeps interrupting like it also has opinions about their relationship.

Apparently all I need to hear is fall + isolated cabin + ghosts + romance and suddenly I have no further questions. 😂 Give me chilly weather, creepy noises in the middle of the night, a house that may or may not want you there, two people forced into close quarters and a little spice while something paranormal is lurking nearby, and I’m IN. I Haunt It That Way definitely delivered on the spooky fall atmosphere I was hoping for, even if I didn’t completely fall in love with every part of the story.
Thora is trying to get away from everything when she heads to her late uncle’s cabin in the mountains, but almost immediately it becomes very clear that this is not going to be the peaceful little escape she imagined. Strange things start happening, the cabin has some seriously unsettling energy, and soon Lee—her ex-husband’s best friend—is there with her. Which would already be complicated enough without adding ghosts and unresolved feelings into the equation. I really enjoyed how the paranormal storyline wasn’t treated as nothing more than cute seasonal decoration. There were genuinely creepy moments, enough mystery to keep me curious, and that slightly claustrophobic feeling of being somewhere isolated while knowing something is VERY wrong.

His relationship with Thora is complicated from the beginning because of his connection to her ex-husband, and I appreciated that the romance wasn’t happening in some completely separate bubble from the rest of her life. There’s history there, baggage there and a lot that needs to be unpacked. I thought their chemistry was good, and once the walls started coming down between them, there were some genuinely sweet moments mixed in with the steamier ones. Also, forced proximity in a haunted cabin? Romance authors, you have discovered one of my weaknesses. Please use this information responsibly. 😂
Where the book lost me a little was with some of Thora’s reactions toward Lee. I understood that she was grieving and carrying a lot emotionally, and I actually appreciate an FMC who is allowed to be complicated, defensive and imperfect. At the same time, there were moments when I wasn’t completely convinced by the intensity of her feelings toward him, so some of their conflict didn’t hit quite as strongly as I wanted it to. I found myself wishing we’d gotten a little more development around their history and the relationships connecting them because I think that would have made their eventual romance feel even more satisfying.
I just needed a LITTLE more time with these two.
There were also pieces of the mystery and backstory that I wanted explored more deeply. The ingredients were all there—the cabin, Uncle George, Lee’s history with Thora’s ex, grief, family baggage and the paranormal elements—and because I was genuinely interested in all of it, I wanted the book to linger in a few places instead of moving on quite so quickly. That’s really what kept this from being a full four or five stars for me. It wasn’t that I disliked what the story gave me; I actually wanted MORE of it.
And I have to give the book credit for letting grief be messy. Thora isn’t always easy or perfectly rational, but people going through loss usually aren’t. The paranormal storyline also works nicely alongside that emotional journey because so much of this book is about what we hold onto, what we’re afraid to confront and what happens when the past refuses to stay buried. Underneath the romance and spooky fun, there was more emotional weight here than I initially expected.
Overall, I Haunt It That Way was a fun, sexy, slightly weird and wonderfully autumnal paranormal romance. I loved the setting, enjoyed the haunting, liked Lee very much 👀 and appreciated that the book wasn’t afraid to let its heroine be messy while she figured herself out. A little more relationship development and a little more depth in some of the backstory probably would’ve pushed this higher for me, but I still had a really good time reading it.

Apparently all I need to hear is fall + isolated cabin + ghosts + romance and suddenly I have no further questions. 😂 Give me chilly weather, creepy noises in the middle of the night, a house that may or may not want you there, two people forced into close quarters and a little spice while something paranormal is lurking nearby, and I’m IN. I Haunt It That Way definitely delivered on the spooky fall atmosphere I was hoping for, even if I didn’t completely fall in love with every part of the story.
Thora is trying to get away from everything when she heads to her late uncle’s cabin in the mountains, but almost immediately it becomes very clear that this is not going to be the peaceful little escape she imagined. Strange things start happening, the cabin has some seriously unsettling energy, and soon Lee—her ex-husband’s best friend—is there with her. Which would already be complicated enough without adding ghosts and unresolved feelings into the equation. I really enjoyed how the paranormal storyline wasn’t treated as nothing more than cute seasonal decoration. There were genuinely creepy moments, enough mystery to keep me curious, and that slightly claustrophobic feeling of being somewhere isolated while knowing something is VERY wrong.

I am genuinely sad writing this review.
When I first saw this book, I thought it had been tailor-made for me. A haunted cabin in the woods? Autumn atmosphere? A ghost story wrapped around a romance? A title that's a pun on a Backstreet Boys song? I was all in before I ever turned the first page.
And somehow, despite checking almost every box on paper, this book never worked for me.
This story never felt immersive.
-The Adirondacks never came alive on the page. The cabin never became the atmospheric character I wanted it to be. I found myself Googling the setting just to visualize where we were because the book wasn't creating that picture for me.
-Then there was Thora. I spent most of the book waiting for her to become a person I could understand. Not necessarily like—just understand. She spends so much of the story criticizing other people, particularly her ex-husband, that I struggled to connect with her. There were a handful of moments of self-awareness sprinkled throughout the book, but they came too late and too infrequently to change my overall impression.
Lee deserved a better book. Seriously. The more I read, the more I found myself wishing the story gave him the depth and attention it gave Thora's complaints. He's loyal, caring, patient, capable, and emotionally mature. He cooks for her. Renovates for her. Shows up for her. Loves her with unwavering certainty. Yet I never fully understood why he loved Thora, and because of that, the romance never landed for me.
The haunting was where I hoped the book would redeem itself. It's where I left most disappointed. There were moments that genuinely intrigued me. One scene involving a candle in the middle of the night was legitimately creepy. But the deeper the mystery went, the less sense it made. By the end, the explanation for the haunting felt completely disconnected from everything we'd been shown. The behavior of the ghost and the characterization of the person supposedly haunting the house felt like they belonged to two entirely different stories.
And then there were the logistical issues. I am usually willing to suspend disbelief for a ghost story. I am much less willing to suspend disbelief for basic human behavior. The farther I got into this book, the more questions I had about timelines, ownership, family decisions, and major plot developments that seemed to happen off-page and then never receive meaningful follow-up (Cody never challenged Thora for any part of the inheritance she received while they were still married; we're supposed to just assume the auction happened and Thora won?).
I can suspend disbelief for ghosts. I struggle to suspend disbelief for basic human communication.
Ultimately, I'm sad and frustrated that I can clearly see the version of this book I wanted. Buried underneath everything is a genuinely beautiful premise about grief, letting go, unfinished business, and two people connected by someone they both loved.
Unfortunately, that version never materialized for me. This wasn't a case of a book not being for me. This was a case of a book being exactly for me—and still missing the mark.

I feel like something went wrong in the marketing pitch and this isn't what it was meant to be, or it's at least targeted wrong. How are they under 30? They sound closer to 40 and I think more mature readers will actually appreciate them more. As it is, I have a lot of thoughts.
Mostly, I really liked Lee. He's very sweet and calm, and his drawings are cute. He's very stable and doesn't bend under the weight of Thora's personality, which is an accomplishment. Not without flaws, but his mistakes (well, one) are very human and deeply rooted in trauma. He's a good one.
I also enjoyed the thoughts on what it means to be in love, what grief can look like to different people, and how sometimes we forget to take things for ourselves, too. If that's what you're looking for, this book is full of it - it's the majority of the writing. Not what I expected, especially since it was said to be fast-paced (didn't feel like it), but it was a strong side, nonetheless.
That's about it with the things I see as pros. Onto the cons.
I think above all, the biggest problem is that it couldn’t hold my interest even in its most interesting moments. I was stuck in the last two chapter for a full day, more interested in playing on my phone. It's just... I couldn't really connect with the story, because there was no real point to it. Yes, there were a lot of thoughts about a lot of things, but I don't really know what the final moral was supposed to be. Maybe it tried to send too many messages at once and the wires got all mixed up.
Thora constantly trying to pick up fights is another major issue. I can handle a flawed FMC just fine if there's a reason to, but she's incredibly frustrating and difficult to swallow. Why? That's something you should go to therapy for, because it's unhealthy and hurts the people around you. Yes, some people love conflict over stupid stuff, but to that extreme? I mean, honestly, I was hoping she'd mellow at some point and it would be one of the valuable lessons to learn in life that the book was trying to sell, but that never happened. And I was pretty much done with her the moment the 3rd act break-up happened - that was some ridiculously stupid stunt.
This book is also aimless. There’s no actual plot, just vibes and ponderings; the romance just kind of happened, no sparks, no nothing; and the mystery wasn’t given proper attention - every time something interesting happened, they shrugged it off and continued without investigating. As I said at the beginning, it's a bit disappointing and underwhelming on all levels.
Connected to that - the final plot twist isn’t neccesarily bad but very anticlimactic, simply because the mystery wasn’t taken care of well enough. Putting aside if it's believable (not the paranormal, the other thing), I just didn't really feel anything about it because it wasn't made into a big deal throughout the story. And there are no real answers in the end, which is always frustrating with mysteries.
Coming back to the romance, since this is technically the main genre. It's too insta-lovey for the epicness of emotional revelations in it. It's been a week at most and it takes them like, what, two-three days to get together? To me, the feelings are too grand for what happened and how it happened. If it takes this short a time, you need to convince me better.
And a last detail that made me roll my eyes - the moon sacrifice thing was deeply cringy. I'm all for exploring and weird stuff, but the way it was written made my skin crawl.
Not for me, though I think a more mature reader around my mom's age would be able to enjoy it because of all the themes it explores.

I'd like to preface this by saying that a lot of my low rating came from the lack of editing this received before being put up as an ARC. I know ARC's are usually only missing the final proofread but this was genuinely one of the worst I've ever received. If you'd told me that this had come fresh from completion without the author looking at it again, then I would have believed you. Spelling mistakes and constant grammatical errors - I usually wouldn't complain but these were mistakes that completely changed how a sentence was read. There were a couple of name swaps between the ex-husband and the nemesis/turned lover that completely ruined scenes when they happened.
This book struggled to draw me in, but every time it did - the spelling/grammar mistakes or the mechanical sex scenes or the sheer cringe just pulled me out every single time. I also found a lot of the humour within the book to feel completely forced. There was minimal chemistry between Thora and Lee and anytime I felt we were making progress with that, the forced conversation completely backtracked everything.
I'm actually really sad that I read this before I'd gotten round to 'Let's Give 'em Pumpkin to Talk about' because Popp's entire writing style in this book has made me not want to even bother trying.
I'd also like to mention that the love interest's name is Leaf. His actual, government name is Leaf.
Which made me hate it a little more.
I did finish this even though I thought about DNF'ing but I was curious enough to want to know where it ended. I must admit, the thing I enjoyed the most about this book was its tragic confession towards the end. It was a lot darker than I anticipated and it ended up becoming the only thing I truly enjoyed about the book.
From the annoying side characters, to the forced side characters with forced humour and the unnecessary long time skips at the start, the barely contextualised family issues at the start that don't truly have a presence until towards the end, to Thora's annoying and very constant self victimising that bordered on narcissism a vast majority of the time, to using Leaf as a government name - everything just felt like slop. This felt like it was written just to write. It felt like it had no heart, and so much minimal effort.
I really didn't mean for my review to be so scathing but I'm being completely honest here. There are other books who have done it better - at no point does this really do anything unique, but it could have. I can literally sense how good this could have been. But it just wasn't. If you're after something that is slightly feel good and requires no focus or effort to read then you'll probably like it and you should give it a go.
But if you're after something that is actually good and can stand on its own, then this isn't it.

For years Thora Williamson has worked for best-selling author Bryony Brooks as her personal assistant and in the end as her nurse/companion. To her surprise, Bryony left her an outrageous inheritance, and in doing so, gave Thora the means to follow her own dreams, whatever they may be. Thora starts by divorcing her husband Cody Briscoe and setting out to visit her cousin Mackenzie “Mack” who is living in the Adirondacks with her wife Jade and struggling to open a B&B. She plans on surprising Mack with the money she needs to renovate the property, she also plans on buying Juniper, the family’s summer retreat, since her Uncle George passed on three years ago and the property is to be auctioned off by the town to cover the back taxes. She is looking forward to some time spent reflecting on the past and deciding how to incorporate those memories into a children’s book she wants to write. She is just settling in when she gets her first visitor, Lee Halliday, her ex-husband’s best friend and the bane of her existence.
Thora harbors a lot of anger against Lee, she blames him for her uncle’s death, because Lee partly renovated Juniper, enabling George to stay alone in the home year-round. Sadly, George was a recluse and passed away alone but wasn’t found for quite some time. Thora lays that directly on Lee, so she is furious when he shows up without warning. But Lee had no idea that George passed away and is genuinely heartbroken. Thora wants to kick him out but knows that George cared for Lee and knows he needs closure, so she agrees to let him stay for a few days. She is even more annoyed that she finds him attractive and doesn’t want to like him. But when things start happening in the house, she secretly admits to herself that she is glad he is there.
This book was not what I was expecting, I thought it was going to be a paranormal rom-com with a enemies-to-lovers trope, but there was nothing even remotely “rom-com” about this book. Thora is one of the angriest heroines I have ever read, and for the life of me, I couldn’t find a way to justify her anger – I understood some of it, but I couldn’t understand why she held onto it so tightly and kept regurgitating it. The book is filled with snarky banter, spicy love scenes, a heroine filled with rage at life in general, a heart of gold hero, some interesting secondary characters, a spooky house filled with memories and some paranormal activity, and ending with a horrifying twist at the end that I didn’t see coming. Overall, once I accepted that it wasn’t a rom-com and just enjoyed it as a sort-of-fantasy read with spicy love scenes and a heaping helping of feminine rage – I actually liked it. If you are looking for an emotional read with a bit of supernatural and some spice – you should give this book a try.

Thora harbors a lot of anger against Lee, she blames him for her uncle’s death, because Lee partly renovated Juniper, enabling George to stay alone in the home year-round. Sadly, George was a recluse and passed away alone but wasn’t found for quite some time. Thora lays that directly on Lee, so she is furious when he shows up without warning. But Lee had no idea that George passed away and is genuinely heartbroken. Thora wants to kick him out but knows that George cared for Lee and knows he needs closure, so she agrees to let him stay for a few days. She is even more annoyed that she finds him attractive and doesn’t want to like him. But when things start happening in the house, she secretly admits to herself that she is glad he is there.
This book was not what I was expecting, I thought it was going to be a paranormal rom-com with a enemies-to-lovers trope, but there was nothing even remotely “rom-com” about this book. Thora is one of the angriest heroines I have ever read, and for the life of me, I couldn’t find a way to justify her anger – I understood some of it, but I couldn’t understand why she held onto it so tightly and kept regurgitating it. The book is filled with snarky banter, spicy love scenes, a heroine filled with rage at life in general, a heart of gold hero, some interesting secondary characters, a spooky house filled with memories and some paranormal activity, and ending with a horrifying twist at the end that I didn’t see coming.
