Wow! What a debut! 'The Dreamsnatcher' is so fast paced it left me breathless!
The story follows feisty young Moll and her wildcat Gryff on their quest to destroy the magic of the Soul Splinter, which has already claimed the lives of Moll's parents. The world-building is superb: we have a gypsy camp, tree spirits, old woodlands and heath, magic systems, talismans, all intermingled to create a rich, atmospheric narrative. The chapters are short and pacy with plenty of horse galloping, tree climbing, river crossing action sequences to keep any reader hooked. Yet there are quieter moments too, where Moll hears of her parents' fate, and how she must learn and move on. I particularly loved the characterisation- this is finest amongst the gypsy camp. Siddy and his pet earthworm are hilarious, as is Mooshie with her tea towel, whereas Oak is strong and true like his name. A very clever ending too in that there's resolution and a sense that all is not quite as it should be. Yet.

I literally have so much to say about this book that I am really hoping that this review can do this debut authors book justice! I loved this book..... a lot! Since the end of Harry Potter I have been looking for a book and / or book series that could fill that Harry Potter void in my life. A book that has the right mix of great characters, humour, magic and action! It's taken me a while...and I present to you The Dreamsnatcher!
The Dreamsnatcher is about Moll, a twelve year old girl who lives in the Ancientwood with Oak, the great leader of the camp, his wife Mooshie who knows how to inflict pain with a tea towel, a protective feline wild cat called Gryff and a great gypsy camp full of characters and community spirit. Moll was found abandoned in the forest by Oak and Mooshie with no family to call her own. Moll, along with her wildcat Gryff, discover that some dark magic is at play and along with her best friend Siddy and a mysterious boy called Alfie they embark upon a magical adventure in search of the old magic of the bone murmers, special amulets, the truth and to find out what the terrifying Soul Splinter that killed Moll's parents is all about!
Right from the start of the book debut author Abi Elphinstone captures the atmosphere and pace of the book perfectly and the sense that Moll and Gryff, whilst rescuing her horse Jinx, are in great danger is apparent and actually makes your heart beat faster routing for Moll from the offset.
The sense of good and bad is fantastically built up in the readers imagination in the sense that one half the forest, the good Ancientwood has good healthy trees and the bad side of the forest, the Deepwood has unhealthy trees with cages of bones, dead rats and a scary bone mask wearing leader called Skull!
Skull, a witchdoctor, is a truly terrifying villain who creeped me out many times. His whole presence is spooky and provides nerve-wracking tension and I think even Lord Voldemort would be quaking in his robes!
There are some touching friendships portrayed in this book my favourite being between Moll, a very head strong, brave and determined lead character and Siddy who provides the comedy element with his earthworm Porridge The Second and being able to fit eleven chestnuts into his mouth that Siddy thinks will one day make him famous was the deal breaker for this character for me. Alfie, a mysterious boy from Skulls camp provides a sense of mystery and along with Raven his noble horse provide some great moments for the reader. This being said Moll and her wildcat Gryff have a heart warming friendship also and again Abi Elphinstone captures the whole premise of a cat and their loving ways and even the cat language was perfect!
The Ancientwood community and gypsy camp family is again written perfectly. Such great characters who all look out for Moll and Gryff. My favourite of the bunch was definitely a yellow toothed, bow tie wearing character called Hard-Times Bob who's party trick is dislocating his limbs for a laugh (ouch!).
Following these characters on a magical journey through woods, heaths, old cottages, rivers and dreamsnatches is completely page turning and with short fast paced snappy chapters the pages really did just keep turning.
This book has everything! Magic, talismans, woods, tree spirits, rituals, voodoo wax figures, tree houses, oracle bones, witch doctors, riddles and puzzles, touching friendships, fab characters and an adorable wildcat! This book is a real magical adventure. The keywords that jumped out to me from this book were friendship, family, community and courage.
Upon receiving this book I literally had to prise the book from my 9 year olds, Corey's, hands and in the end had to book share with him! The fights we had over who's turn it was to read the book before bed led to an interesting week or so. Corey is planning to post his own review of The Dreamsnatcher on Tales Of Yesterday very soon over on his first Corey's Corner post....but I can tell you now he absolutely loved this book!
I will be recommending this book to all the children (and adults) I know as one to read in 2015 and a fabulous author to keep an eye on and with the ending setting up book two nicely and is portrayed in such a way that you actually feel scared for what is coming I cannot wait for 2016 when the next book is published!

I had high expectations for this, which in hindsight probably sabotaged my reading experience. Is "gypsy" a derogatory term? If so, this book has a major problem there as it refers to the main character and her community as "gypsies." I didn't connect with the characters at all and didn't understand their motivations. There was no world building and the bad guys seemed unreal and ridiculous to me. It seemed a bit like the author thought up a cool name for something and then stopped developing that feature (cool name = my readers get it and I don't have to explain anymore). The only reason I finished this was because of the wildcat character, even though Moll sometimes reacted to him more like a love interest than a friend or pet... it was a bit weird. Not going to be continuing on with this series, unfortunately.

This book fills you with imagination. You can feel the darkness seeping through the pages, yet to discover the light through fantastic writing by Abi Elphinstone. I loved the story and each characters prospective within it. Brilliant writing. Brilliant story. Can't wait for the sequel next year!!!!

The Dream Snatcher is a vibrant story of youth, discovery, love and loyalty in a world where, across the river, dark revelations awake.
The story follows the adventures of Moll Pecksniff, an orphaned Romani traveller whose dreams are plagued by dark visions of a masked man shrouded in fire and night. But she is not alone. A ferociously loyal wildcat is her companion and Moll soon meets up with Alfie whose own past is as mysterious as hers. Together they must face the flames and the darkness for the sake of their people and for the sake of her home.
Elphinstone’s first novel is one full of energy, honesty, love and adventure. There are so many aspects of the story that I enjoyed: the descriptive language, evocation of setting (I loved how Moll knows the land and can name the trees and the flowers around her), clarity of character and mastery of a complex plot all help find a fine balance between immersion and pace.
An aspect of The Dream Snatcher that helps it shine a little brighter than other children’s stories these days is the inclusion of the Romani people. I loved spending time with them in the forest, leaping over broom handles, listening to fortunes being told telling and seeing their good luck omens swaying gently above the front of their wagons. This is a colourful and exotic world; wholly unusual to most of the readers and that makes it exciting.
The pace of the story is as fast as Moll’s own beating heart. Even when Elphinstone feels the need to explain something (such as how the soul-splinter works or subtle allusions to both her and Alfie’s parts to play in this story) Moll is restless and working, climbing trees or foraging amongst the undergrowth: she is a hero who is happiest embracing and exploring the wild. This passion and pace comes through so strongly in the narrative that the story, with its short chapters and cliffhanger endings sweeps you along, halting only when Skull appears and commands the pages.
True to his name and the face of Moll’s nightmares, Skull and his fellow Shadowmasks make great archetypal villains. Never do we see what lies beneath their masked faces. We cannot look into their eyes or identify with them in any way. These are villains who stay true to their purpose: monstrous creatures that we should be scared of. When I first stepped into that camp with Moll I could feel a powerful sense of captivation that reminded me of Darth Vader – except Skull is a lot meaner! And in case having a great bad-guy alongside a gang of savages isn’t enough to send shivers down your spine, there are savage hounds and vapours too that warp and bend the land for their own devices.
Elphinstone has packed so much into her story: riddles and songs, talismans and superstitions, cuckoo calls and magical amulets; secrets and spells - almost too much for the 278 pages to hold. Thank goodness then, that there are more to come because I get the feeling that Elphinstone is just warming up. She’s probably writing down a dank cave or up a tree poking in woodpecker holes looking for her next idea or riding bareback through a forgotten wood. Wherever she is, I promise you, she has tapped into the spirit of adventure and a love of the natural world that many children crave yet are missing.
Put a copy of The Dream Catcher in their hands and they’ll happily go with her.

With my ever growing TBR pile I didn’t think I’d read Abi Elphinstone’s debut prior to publication but much like Moll being called the Dreamsnatch there was something about this book that kept calling me. I just kept picking it up so better read it to find out why.
I loved the world-building and characters. There is this bit towards the end, which I won’t spoil because it’s SO awesome and that would be mean but I was literally happy-clapping while reading it. The clue is ‘tree’. When you reach it you’ll know what I mean. If you weren’t loving Moll’s world before you will be then. It’s so vivid and the description – wonderful!
Moll, Siddy (and of course Porridge the 2nd), Mooshie, Oak… I liked them all. Moll is headstrong, which is a trait I personally love in protagonists but Gryff. Can I have my own Gryff please?

Príbeh pre deti od 9 rokov som si vybrala na čítanie kvôli prostrediu v ktorom sa odohráva a to kočovný tábor cigánov. Kniha je nabitá akciou, ako to v moderných románoch pre deti býva. Zlo je predstavené deťom spôsobom, ktorý je ich veku prijateľný. Čarodejníci v maskách, pretože im chýbajú tváre a duše, tajomné kúzla, kliatby. V príbehu je obsiahnuté prastaré rómske legendy o šeputajúcich kostiach, zázračných amuletoch, deti v nej nájdu aj liečenie bylinami a masťami, život v kočovných vozoch.
Príbeh bol vyvážení a mal všetko čo detská kniha de facto obsahovať má. Silný vplyv rodiny- skutočnej aj náhradnej, priateľstvo, odvahu, smútok aj strach, cez zázračné predmety si hlavná hrdinka čoraz viac uvedomuje príslušnosť k svojmu rodu.
Tieto moderné autorské rozprávky, ktoré detského čitateľa postupne privádzajú do sveta fatasy mi ale neprídu ničím zaujímavé, nemajú v sebe hĺbku a aj táto kniha bude pre mňa jednou z tých, ktoré sa iba zaradia do radu mnohých podobných príbehov. Originálne je iba prostredie v ktorom sa odohráva.

February 28, 2017The Dreamsnatcher is a thrilling page-turner. It really is. I am a great fan of the author, and have read quite a few of her books, so really enjoyed this one. I was taken on a journey with Moll and Griff, and then Alfie, weaving through each page one by one. The definition of a GoodRead!

This was a lot darker than Abi's other books i've read and was quite jarring at times. It was a mixture of magical and fantasy and then every now and again someone will pop a gun out of their pocket and shoot it into the sky. It was a bit of an odd mixture and I really didn't know how to take it.
I did enjoy it and was immersed by the story but there was something that held it back from being a five star review for me and i'm not sure what it was. The world-building was just a bit off - it was never clearly explained whether this was meant to be a fantasy world completely, or if this was earth but jut a little bit magical. Hence why the discussion of guns threw me when they were mentioned. I do love that Abi has a clear style of writing and that her characters are always accompanied by glorious animals.
Overall this story intrigued me and gripped me enough that i'll definitely be listening to the rest of the series over on scribd.

I have been amazed and gratified of late to see the incredible originality coming from authors of UK middle grade. The Dreamsnatcher is certainly part of this parade of quality storytelling.
Apart from the adventurous storyline and themes of belonging, identity and loyalty that pervade the book, there is also a palpable sense of newness about this tale. Elphinstone has created a really engaging and original world comprising magic, ancient prophesies, sacred roles and age-old rivalries within a setting that invites the imagination to take flight.
I must admit that I had a little difficulty getting into the story. Although the book starts off with some adventurous doings on the part of Molly, as she attempts to steal back her pony from the altogether-creepy Skull, I found the first section of the story slower than I would have liked. In this section Molly is attempting to discover some truths about herself and her place in the camp while the adults try to keep this information from her. Soon after this though, all is revealed and events become more dangerous as Skull increases his efforts to lure Molly to his clearing. The book steadily picks up the pace from there and Molly, Sid, Gryff and the other members of Moll’s camp attempt to uncover the secrets of the Bone Oracle before it’s too late.
Kids in the target age bracket are really going to enjoy this story, as much for its suspense and pacing as for the magical elements and original world building. And of course for the alluring cover.

What an amazing story!
As soon as I started reading this book I was drawn in to the world of Moll and Gryff. There is excitement written into near enough every page which helps the story keeps it's fast pace. As I was reading I found myself becoming more and more involved in the relationship between Moll and Gryff and think that most children would be able to relate to it. The relationship between them both made me as a reader feel a surge of different emotions from happiness, anxiety and sadness.
The story itself does remind me of other classic children's stories which I think makes the story more interesting. This is because the reader can make connections to childhood memories of reading. Personally I was reminded of The Golden Compass (Gryff = daemons), Harry Potter (Amulets = Horcroxes) and Bridge to Terabithia (crossing the river to strange places).
I can honestly say that I cannot wait to use this book with children in a classroom!
As soon as I started reading this book I was drawn in to the world of Moll and Gryff. There is excitement written into near enough every page which helps the story keeps it's fast pace. As I was reading I found myself becoming more and more involved in the relationship between Moll and Gryff and think that most children would be able to relate to it. I enjoyed this story. It was fast-paced, mysterious, and funny. I loved that there is a wild cat in the story. Animals are always the best part, as they are more awesome than most humans.
It had some original parts inside the story that I enjoyed. I also enjoyed the dynamic in the "tribe". The writing was good too. I definitely will read the second one just to see where it goes.

Possibly because I read the book in such a stop-start fashion on bus journeys, I found it took longer than expected to get into.
However, in my opinion, the book got better as it went on so I am now looking forward to finding out how the adventure continues when the sequel is published later this year.

This book had been on my shelf a few weeks and so I took the decision after ploughing my way through a 10 book series that I needed a quick read and this was my choice.
The story follows Moll and her wild cat Gryff on their quest to destroy the magic of the Soul Splinter after it took the lives of Molls parents.
The world building in this book is superb and the writing captivates it’s reader with a fast spaced narrative. The sense of good and bad is fantastically built up with any reader it has one half of the forest with good trees, good people and the second half with bad trees, bad people and a scary bone mask wearing villain called Skull. His whole presence throughout the book is quite scary and keeps you on your toes.
The book explores magic , talismans and the friendships , family and community spirit are very well depicted too.
Well done to Abi for a lovely book

Ini keren. Sangat menegangkan, bikin nebak-nebak karena misterinya ga bisa langsung terungkap. Semuanya dibuka pelan-pelan sampai akhir. Sedih, karena banyak nyawa melayang. Bagian kerennya adalah seekor Wildcat yang muncul jadi sahabat Moll.
Waktu bagian awal. Rasanya memang agak sedikit lambat. Karena, masih terfokus sama keegoisan Moll yang kadang mikir sambil marah. Terlalu antusias dan tergesa. Tapi, pas udah masuk ke bagian penculikan. Baru deh kerasa serunya.

This book hovered between a 4 and a 5 star for me. In the end the 4 won.
(However, I'm presently reading the sequel, which speaks volumes . . . if you'll excuse the pun. Furthermore, I've already bought the third in the series!)
For me there were a few episodes which went on a little too long, but the writing and the characterisation was strong. I liked Moll, Siddy and Alfie and their relationships. The humour made me smile too - I loved Sid's pets. And the setting was believable and real.
The story picked up speed in the second half and then (for me at least) it morphed into a page-turner.
Abi Elphinstone is an author harbouring bucket-loads of talent and imagination.

Moll Pecksniff is a gypsy girl who sets out to defeat the darkness that plagues the forest, her home and her dreams. She is accompanied by her loyal, but fierce, wildcat and her new frenemy, Alfie- who's past is as much of a mystery as her own. This is a fast paced and exciting book filled with adventure and passion from the word go. The descriptive language enables the reader to join Moll on her quest and be in her world for a short time. Can't wait to read the next in the series!

Love the book! I was drawn right into the book at the very start,it took me into a different world,it normally takes a couple of chapters to get me interested into a book but this one is fabulous,can’t get enough of it! My favourite characters are definitely : Moll,Oak,Jinx,Siddy and Alfie,most of the main characters.Well done on this book!

Fast paced magical mystery for older Ks2 and younger Ks3. I had missed this series when they came out and caught up having enjoyed other books by the author. Dark in parts but now looking forward to seeing what happens next.

A review of Abi Elphinstone's "The Dream Snatcher" by Pippa Wilson

So what did I think?
Endorsed on the front cover by Piers Torday as "Fast paced and full of charm", and further endorsed on the back cover by Katherine Rundell as "An outstanding debut packed with suspense, adventure and heart", you know straight away that "The Dream Snatcher" is going to be more than a bit special. In all truthfulness, it was the gorgeous cover by Thomas Flintham that reeled me in. Before I'd even read the blurb, the irresistible colours grabbed my attention, and I was intrigued by the woodland scene depicted (with Moll's catapult peeking out of her pocket).
The dark and chilling prologue sets a supernatural tone that pervades the whole book. The first thing I noticed at the start of the book is the energy and pace of Abi Elphinstone's storytelling. I felt as if I were whirling through a fast and heady dance; almost floating through the action. As Moll awakens in the "knotted and wild" forest, her recurring nightmare and reality become one, and we are there with her. As a reader the words fell from the page and I quickly became immersed in Moll's world, and immediately cared about her destiny.
As the story unfolded I particularly enjoyed the world of the Romany gypsies, especially the superstitions and folklore, and the traditions that are upheld by the folk in Moll's people. The details of the talismans, old magic, and ceremonies are robust and convincing, and contribute to the rich and vivid portrayal of Moll's world. What becomes clear is that this book has been written by an author who really values, prizes, the natural world; Moll's people are closely entwined with the land and wildlife.
Moll herself is a satisfyingly feisty and flawed protagonist who has always sensed that she is different to the others in her camp. "Wish I didn't have so many cracks...I'm like a smashed-up eggshell, me", she declares near the start of the story. During the course of her adventures she discovers startling new information about her "beginning" and discovers that she has a special path to follow. She travels with a catapult, and isn't afraid to use it. Moll has a particularly imaginative line in insults too.
She has a close and unique bond with her wildcat guardian, Gryff. Along the way we get to know a colourful cast of fresh characters, my personal favourite being Hard-Times Bob who is "great at dislocating his limbs", yet prone to hiccups. Moll's trusty friend Siddy, who "combined a hopelessly misdirected enthusiasm with very little common sense", has a particular fondness for earthworms, and is a delightfully entertaining character. And Skull the suitably vile and scary villain, is one to fear with his 'mask that looks like bone'. We are intrigued by how Moll can possibly take on this mighty enemy.
Throughout the story the clever balance of magic, lucky charms and folklore form a world where anything can happen, and we are left wondering what will happen next with every step of Moll's journey. I found that it had reminiscent hints of Northern Lights, Harry Potter and the Narnia stories, which may well indicate that this is set to become a modern classic.
As an aspiring author I've treasured Abi Elphinstone's clarity of her descriptions of the woods and her characters, and the way in which the story unfolds with such unrelenting momentum. In fact, as soon as I had finished reading it, I resolved to start annotating it, and analyse every word in order to pinpoint her magical winning formula! I love the way she depicts each scene so vividly and cinematically to the point that you literally see the story unfolding very visually in your imagination.
My only criticism,however, is that the ending begs an immediate reading of the next book...but we have to wait. How irritating!

Life has been so crazy recently that this post which should have gone up the end of July is finally being published in (almost) mid-August - oops! The Dreamsnatcher is our seventh book in the Beth And Chrissi Do Kid-Lit Challenge for 2019 and I was particularly excited to dive into this one after hearing great things about both the author and the series in general. I adore the front cover, it's quirky, cute and magical and the fantastical premise gave me high hopes that I was going to thoroughly enjoy the story.
Generally, this is a lovely opening novel to what looks to be an intriguing, imaginative and dangerous world. I can certainly see why the series has legions of fans and so many positive reviews on Goodreads with an impressive average rating of 4.15 stars. As an adult reading The Dreamsnatcher, I can clearly understand why it appeals to children, boasting strong character development, beautiful magical elements, an incredible animal companion, mystery and adventure and the trepidation and terror of never knowing what's going to happen next. Our female lead, Molly Pecksniff in particular is fantastically memorable and her bravery and attitude leads to her becoming someone that younger readers will be able to both look up to and relate to. I had a particular fondness for her wildcat sidekick, Gryff who captured my heart from the very first opening pages and becomes even more endearing as the story continues.
Without giving anything away, the pace of this story is ridiculously fast whilst still retaining that air of mystery and confusion that the first book in a series should always possess. The action doesn't let up for a minute and Moll and her friends/family always seem to be finding themselves in precarious situations with little time for rest or relaxation. As a result, it makes for a brilliantly exciting narrative where it becomes impossible to predict the author's next move. As a work of children's fiction, this is absolutely perfect and as a younger reader, I can imagine tearing through the pages unable to put the book down. As an adult reader, I seem to live for the quieter moments in my fiction and as a personal preference, I would have loved to see deeper moments where we get to know the other characters a bit better. However, this IS just the first book in the series and I'm sure there is plenty of time for all that in the books that follow!
With an intricate, well thought out plot, frightening villains and our determined, adventurous protagonist, I'm sure that this series will continue to capture the imaginations of children for years to come. It had echoes of Philip Pullman's Dark Materials series but stands completely on its own as a unique and interesting work. Although I may not be the target audience for the story, I can appreciate why readers fall in love with the characters, the world and the writing.

Ok sit down and listen. This book is absolutely amazing. You know how the author's name Abi Elphinstone pretty much sounds like she's a badass fairy princess? Well the book is just as awesome.
I want every child to read this book, I want it to become the new Harry Potter about a girl, because boys are weird. I want this book to have all the things. But also I really really want to get my hands on The Shadow Keeper RIGHT NOW!!!
I'll try to make this into a coherent review, but I can't promise anything, ok?
All the characters in this are SO cool! They all have distinct personalities, conflicting motives and real, human characteristics. I could probably go on and on about them, because I really feel like I'm part of their gang now. But let's focus on our main character Moll. Moll really is everything I wanted to be when I was younger. She's bold and does whatever she wants, she takes the trouble she gets for her behaviour because well... that's what happens when you break rules, but she won't let it stop her, no no! She's also a gypsy, and that's truly one of those things of I dreamed of all the time. Most importantly she has a wildcat called Gryff who is absolutely her best friend and totally amazing, which is a thing I always hoped would happen to me and totally play-acted all the time. Moll will really speak to, I hope, every young girl reading this. Or grown-up girl, like me, whatever it's all the same. But she won't bore any boys. This is a perfect book for boys who think girls are stupid, because they aren't. Not at all. And Moll proves that fact.
There's tons of cool magic, adventure, mysterie and lots and lots of edge of your seat moment. Nowhere did I feel like it was too pacy though. The flow was always steady, not constantly of the same pace, but always steady.
No preachy parts, but definitely taught a lesson or two. And every once in a while there was a hilarious line thrown in (my favourite is the one about burping!)
I LOVED the way it ended on a happy part, but there was still a thread of suspense running.
I recommend this to Everyone!
I literally can't wait to get my hands on The Shadow Keeper!! I've not nearly had enough of Moll and all her friends!

The Dreamsnatcher is a debut filled with magic, charm and a good dollop of sass. So much fun!
Abi Elphinstone has a gorgeous writing style: lyrical and evocative, it sets the scene of Oak’s camp and the Ancientwood perfectly. I love Moll and the camp’s gypsy life. A childhood of climbing trees, making pets out of earthworms, learning about natural potions and remedies; a dream childhood. It has made Moll fierce, brave, mischievous and a little wild. Add some of the phrases that come out of her and all in all I think she’s brilliant.
With the threat of Skull and the Dreamsnatcher looming over Moll’s head, her life takes on a completely different pace. Sneaking around, working out risky ways to escape Skull’s camp, deciding if she can trust the boy trapped in the cage with her; it’s all going on. I have to admit that I struggled in the beginning as I wasn’t really in the mood for the novel, but once I settled into The Dreamsnatcher I became so involved with Moll and Gryff’s adventures.
The connections between the humans and the animals are one of my favourite elements about this book. Gryff, Jinx and Raven are companions, friends and a lifeline for them. It goes above the human with a pet thing that those without animals will always assume; they genuinely love and care for each other and it gave me the warm fuzzies. I remember loving this book, when i was younger. And it still is pretty good! (Admittedly some of her newer books are better)
I love Gryff i think that he’s awesome 😂
but i don’t like how clear the gender stereotypes and boundaries are, often they were rather subtle but clearly still there.
Like how the only people who fought (other than moll ofc) were male, weather that be the entirely male camp (skull’s) or just Oak’s boys, and Jesse etc.
and then you had Mooshie who was like the most stereotypical, strict mum character with her tea towel and food-based place in the story.
I don’t remember much from the next two books from the last time, I read them. But I really hope they flushed out the characters more in them.
There was little to no character depth in this at all . And motivations were completely unclear of everyone but maybe Moll.
I also didn’t get attached to any of the characters (except from Gryff ofc) since there was nothing to work from.
Also, her magic system seems to be another plot convenience style mess. A sort of “it’ll happen when it’s helpful” kind of thing. Completely unpredictable with very, very flimsy boundries. I hope that some rules are also established in the next books to try to tame the beast of an easily broken mess she currently has. (No offence to her tho she does do it in a lovely way, just with no rules)
All in all i do quite like the book and would recommend it to anyone who wants a quick read about gypsies and a sprinkle of magic.
I love Gryff i think that he’s awesome 😂
but i don’t like how clear the gender stereotypes and boundaries are, often they were rather subtle but clearly still there.
Like how the only people who fought (other than moll ofc) were male, weather that be the entirely male camp (skull’s) or just Oak’s boys, and Jesse etc.
and then you had Mooshie who was like the most stereotypical, strict mum character with her tea towel and food-based place in the story.
I don’t remember much from the next two books from the last time, I read them. But I really hope they flushed out the characters more in them.
There was little to no character depth in this at all . And motivations were completely unclear of everyone but maybe Moll.
I also didn’t get attached to any of the characters (except from Gryff ofc) since there was nothing to work from.
Also, her magic system seems to be another plot convenience style mess. A sort of “it’ll happen when it’s helpful” kind of thing. Completely unpredictable with very, very flimsy boundries. I hope that some rules are also established in the next books to try to tame the beast of an easily broken mess she currently has. (No offence to her tho she does do it in a lovely way, just with no rules)

I've had my eye on this book for a while so when I found out I could borrow it from my local library, I put it on hold.
Moll is an adventurous young girl who lives in a clearing in the forest. She also happens to be a gypsy, and even has a cool wagon. Oh, and she's got a wildcat called Gryff.
The night her nightmares take her over the river's boundary she's determined to get her stolen cob back. But the horrible Skull has taken Jinx and he's a witch doctor who has some very evil plans for Moll. Now that he knows who she really is, he's determined to get her full name so he can complete a dark magical ritual.
Moll doesn't know, but she's a lot more special than she ever imagined. She also has a cool destiny to fulfill.
Wow. This was such a wonderful book. I loved Moll's strength, and determination. She's stubborn but kindhearted. Also, Siddy and Alfie were cool. As well as all the other, many cool characters. The gypsy customs--including their belief in nature and magic--were so interesting! I enjoyed this book so much.
There were certain times when the story felt like a waking nightmare. Seriously. The imagery was amazing! I love fast-paced adventure stories with a twist of magic.

I wish I were 10 years old again. I wish I could go back in time and hand 10 year old me this book because it was around about that age I slowly began to stop reading. I still read plenty (it wasn't until high school that I almost never read for pleasure) but not nearly as much as I used to and nor was I getting much enjoyment out of it. But I would have ADORED this book - I mean, I still did at 19 so I know I'd have read it 100 times over as a child.
This book is full of fun, adventure, mystery, magic, and a wildcat who I love with all my heart (just wait for book 2, he was trying to rip my heart out of my chest and shred it with his claws at one point!) I just cannot express how wonderful this book is and I cannot fathom that there are publishers out there who don't want to publish it because the main character is a Gypsy. This book is fabulous and every child browsing the 9-12 section at my work gets told I love it and think they should read it! (which freaks some of them out - most of them are like me at that age, shy and don't want to talk to kids their own age let alone an "adult"!)
