I've been researching dreams for about six months now and Goldhammer's ideas are the ones that I've related to the most. I don't see the point in breaking down these ideas here because they're in the book. Instead, I'll tell you why it was of interest to me. First of all, Goldhammer is a psychologist (or psychiatrist, whatever) and one who lost around fifteen years of his to a New Age cult. So he has no love for the oogly-boogly bullshit that is so prevalent in books on the subject. It was actually analyzing his dreams that made him realize how much of himself he was losing to the cult and to cut out of there. He also avoids a lot of that trigger language, that "everything's going to change" language, that self-help kind of manipulation that I've found in most of the books I've read on dreams. Being able to appreciate his past history and his no bullshit attitude and pragmatism that came as a result, I tried out some of the ideas and found them to help me really get a lot out of my dreams to the point of self-betterment and being a happier person. If your going to read about dreams, please read this first.
pre review: I found this book at the library and almost put it back (thinking it was a fluffy self-helper). After scanning it with more attention, it seems to have substance. It has incredible quotes, history of famous people and their dreams, and was worth reading if only for that. After reading it through, I lost my enthusiasm for the book. Not that exceptional.
