So far, this is one of the best stories. There are a lot of characters' introduction here. I was delighted to read more about the protagonists.

Recommended to shoujo lovers.

In middle school Futaba Yoshioka thought all boys were loud and obnoxious... except for Kou Tanaka. They agree to meet to go to a summer festival together but he never shows up. Fast forward to high school where she meets Tanaka again, but he's totally different and that even includes his name! Will they be able to rekindle what they had in the past?!

The Premise

In Ao Haru Ride vol 5 we continue the romantic love triangles by forming new ones with another girl and another guy! This is very high school with lots of misunderstandings, sudden interruptions and emotional growth happening at a rapacious rate. And it all happens in a genuine and personal way. I really felt for Yuri but also applauded her honesty and bravery in telling Futaba. And Futaba goes into each interaction with such a great, high school perspective. She is upbeat, but also uncertain how things will turn out. She wants to be honest but finds it so, so hard. And it doesn't help that the guy she likes is a bit of a mess emotionally. Ultimately though this is about the choices she makes in her own actions and responses.

The Buzz

Where I was a little surprised at Ao Haru Ride vol 5 wasn't all the romantic twistings but how I came to dislike Kou a little. His motivations are only firm when he's feeling jealous and that just isn't right. Futaba deserves more than that buddy! But it does make him more like a teenage boy so its also in character?! I mean moody and inconsistent, plus jerking around his love interest is hot to some women...?! I know where I would want the Ao Haru Ride series to go from here... and it wouldn't be toward a positive relationship with Kou. He is turning out to be just what girls don't need to chase.

The Feels

Turnabout is fair play though for Futuba in Ao Haru Ride vol 5... Kou is jealous and now she gets a taste of it. While I really related to how she winds him up after the radio silence I also felt like my ardor would wane somewhat. His reasons for going AWOL are understandable but when we learn more we wonder if he's really saying something to Futaba about their relationship. I will admit that talking more with Toma was a highlight for me. He's really a sweetheart and the kind of guy you want a girl to have as a first boyfriend. I look forward to more conversations with this guy!

The Visuals

Ao Haru Ride vol 5 delights visually as several frames were so telling... with or without words. When Kou sees who Futaba is with... when Toma reacts to his friends teasing! By the end of the volume I was just as nervous as Futaba about what this mysterious friend looks like... The fact they rely to heavily on Kou speaks to an emotional relationship that may drown out any other fledgling relationships he has going.

Ao Haru Ride vol 5 introduces a new stumbling block in Futaba's relationship with Kou right when she had worked up the nerve to tell him how she feels. He better watch out though because he's not the only one continuing to live life and meet people... We'll have to see where those new relationships go in the next volume of Ao Haru Ride!!

Stop bc this just keeps getting better and better. I am extremely invested into this story bc this is now everything the anime DIDNT COVER so it’s all new content for me! We started off with what seems like is going to be a huge step in futaba and kou’s relationship, but BOOM. HUGE ROAD BLOCK! I can already tell kou’s “new friend” is going to be trouble for these two. Sigh. On a positive note, there was some one else who has taken an interest in futaba and tbh… I’m a fan. I rlly like him and I’m excited to see more of him! Kou admitted to kominato tht he has feelings for futaba but hasn’t acted on it. I loveee kominato’s advice but ofc kou isn’t going to listen. I love kou but he’s playing too many games. He gets jealous, says mean things to her when another guy flirts with her, and is talking to another girl?! Kikuchi is making me go 🤭🤭 he says the sweetest things to futaba, rlly wants to win her heart, makes an effort to see her and seems like he can give futaba what she wants! Cant wait to see what happens next

"It's fine. If the distance between us has grown, I'll just close it up again." Damn, just when he's starting to change and finally picked Futaba first! I can't take it, I want to cry!!

Stressors are back. You wanna swing it that way? Alright, I still have remaining pieces of soul within me, waiting to be shattered. Augh, who am I kidding?! I want to punch Toma, I'm not excited anymore!! Now, there's the Nagasaki girl already—I swear, I'm flying through these volumes!

Update:
What the fuck. It's 4 am already?! No, wonder I'm having a headache! I thought it was stress because of the events here. Shit, and here I thought I was too fast! I guess I took my time absorbing all the drama!

Another great volume in the series, I enjoyed it, but at the same time I am upset to have read it this late. I want to fit in as much reading as I can, but I picked the wrong time to read it. School starts tomorrow, which means I'm probably gonna get a lot of homework. *Sobs* But, I will try to read as much as possible, I am so behind on my reading challenge and a good way to catch up is reading mangas and graphic novels. I want to read as many novels I can, I'm behind on so many series like Throne of Glass, Game of Thrones, and I haven't even read Lady Midnight yet.

Anyway, I am getting off topic, this book was amazing. It's about a girl named Futaba who hated guys. When she was in middle school, all of the guys in her grade was attracted to her, and this caused her to have a difficulty in making friends. The only guy she liked was Kou, the guy who was less manly, shorter than the average guy, and has a gentle voice. Before the two can get close, Kou disappeared and moved away. Now that Futaba is in high school, she decides to change herself so that she can make friends. She decides to eat more, and act aggressive in order to look unattractive to guys and make friends. This works, but the friends she has aren't that great. She doesn't expect to run into her childhood crush, who has changed as much as she has.

I love Futaba's facial reactions to everything. She is hilarious, honest and kind, but I feel bad for her at the same time. Kou is honest, but he hides everything from Futaba and doesn't give that many explanations. Sometimes, he will give Futaba a proper answer, but then they go through many obstacles and go back to having distance between them. This shows that relationships have many obstacles, which makes the chapters fast paced and interesting. As I read more and more, I ship these two more and more.

Futaba and Kou's relationship is very complicated because of their past. Their past selves liked each other, and Kou doesn't want to go to the past. He believes that he has changed, but our past is what shapes the people we are now. I hope he realizes that soon, and I hope that he starts to talk about how he feels about things. I love the side characters, Yuri is amazing, and Murao is awesome.

I hope to read more of this series soon, and I need to finish Carry On! I'll be off to fit as much reading as I can before tomorrow morning!

My attitude toward shoujo romance vacillates, and I do think this one's better than a lot of them. Moment-to-moment emotions, and the heroine's obsessive attention to her crush (for this reader, "crush" and "claustrophobia" often walk side-by-side), are quite well done in Ao Haru Ride.

I liked the part toward the end of the book where Kou is helping out a former classmate through a period of grief. Futaba's responses are "realistic" rather than "ideal"--she understands intellectually that Kou is doing a good thing for his friend, but also can't help interpreting his actions as growing distant from or neglecting her, and when she . She has an explicitly selfish moment where she tricks Kou into thinking she's crying so she can draw him closer to her. She also uses Kikuchi, who is evidently (to everyone but Futaba) interested in her, as an advice-dispensing machine.

It's kind of cool that our heroine doesn't think or act perfectly in all situations. She feels like a real teenager, immature moments and all. Despite the excellent aspects mentioned above, some of the situations were too by the numbers. As often happens with romance stories between high school students, there are only so many situations an author can put her characters into, and still make it relateable and believable rather than absurd....

Volume 5 of Ao Haru Ride continues its emotionally charged journey with a mix of vulnerability and slow-burn romance. While the art remains beautifully expressive and the tension between Futaba and Kou is deliciously frustrating, the pacing drags a little — circling emotional ground already explored. Shuko’s subplot adds depth but feels slightly undercooked. Still, the volume delivers heartfelt moments that keep you invested, even if you wish the characters would finally just talk things out. A solid, if slightly meandering, installment.

VIDEO REVIEW HERE: https://youtu.be/a4XU75uG8Bw

"Change happens when things shift, right? So if you shift back and forth between strong and weak…you must be changing. I think that's how we all change…little by little. If you want to change, just keep shifting. And if you make big shift…you may surprise yourself. You may discover something new."

GAH! I KNEW the drama was coming but I was not ready! I mean this is an Io Sakisaka manga, so again, I KNEW it was coming (because it would be super weird if it wasn't LOL) but I was absolutely loving the Futaba and Kou vibes and this volume toned those vibes down by so much! 😭😭😭😭

Despite that this volume didn't go anywhere I hoped and/or wanted, it was still a very good volume! Not my favorite, but I know that is specifically because Kikuchi is trying harder and I DON'T want him to try harder. Like don't stop my ship from sailing Kikuchi no matter how much you want to squeeze into Futaba's heart! 😜😜😜 (I will say he is not a bad guy and if there was going to be a good love rival, he indeed would be an excellent one. I have a feeling I will have to have my guard up with him if I don't want to risk switching ships at some point…)

Despite that this volume didn't quite have all the romantic moments, I LOVED the beginning! SUCH a sweet moment between Futaba and Kou! 🥰🥰🥰 (And two other moments that happen later on that were all the swoon!)

Yuri continues to be the kind friend that you can't help but deeply admire and hope you're that kind of friend. I would have loved to have been more like her in high school! Even though I'm an adult who is happily married, seeing her on page and her actions really warms my heart. She is an amazing friend! <3

I will say the softest scene in this story is Kou with the cat! That one panel was SOOOO precious and adorable! You can feel the love and softness in it.

Kominato is the man!! Thank you for internally voicing that Kou is an idiot because AHHHHHH to a certain dilemma/situation! Kou doesn't see it but everyone else certainly does! Also he is SUCH an incredible friend too! I really love his character and how he is one of the first people to stick up for Kou. Plus the telepathy made me laugh!

I'm a little on edge now that the secret person has arrived and hoping nothing bad happens, but I will say that our characters look rather awesome for the school festival (and seeing Kou and Kominato was hilarious!)!

Hoping things will unfold okay in volume six...

Overall Manga Review:

Wonderful in some aspects but questionable in others, this was certainly an interesting manga.

One thing that was fantastically done in this manga series was the exploration and representation of grief and the long-lasting impact a parent’s death can have on a child.

The exploration of true friendships was also nicely done, especially with the protagonist letting go of her fake friends and making new friends with whom she went through hardships with but still came out well on the other side due to genuine communication and understanding between them all.

The romance was mostly cute and it certainly started off nicely but it got really murky and messy as it went on. The introduction of the second love interest threw a spanner in the works and to be honest, this was the one instance in which I rooted for the second love interest over the main love interest.

There were some problematic things in this manga that I really wish hadn’t been there.
1. The indecisiveness of the protagonist coupled with the irritatingly dumb decisions of the main love interest became a bit annoying, especially as the right-person, wrong-time scenarios kept cropping up so that the protagonist and main love interest went round in circles constantly.
2. The way the female rival love interest used her unfortunately sad situation to manipulate the main love interest into being with her even though she knew that he wanted to be with the protagonist was awful, exploitative and downright shady.
3. The protagonist made a good decision to move on from the main love interest when he chose to look after the rival love interest instead of being romantically with her. Yet those were all words and no action because the entire time she was with the second love interest she was pining for the main love interest. And it was made even more pitiful by the fact that she knew she didn’t love the second love interest but still insisted on being with him and hurt him by being overly enthusiastic in her actions but not really feeling anything towards him. She led him on and then dropped him like a stone the moment she could go running back to the main love interest after deluding herself that all the terrible decisions she had made and lies she’d told the second love interest were in his interest and only done with him in mind. In actuality, the protagonist acted in a way that was cruel and selfish.
4. The main love interest was sometimes mean too. He managed to make the protagonist cry on more than one occasion with his unnecessarily harsh words and worse, his borderline sexually abusive actions. The scene where he tried to scare her into protecting herself around guys by getting on top of her and pinning her to the ground was insane and the fact that all she did was cry was even more insane. She wasn’t mad at him at all afterwards even though he had severely abused his position as her friend. The lack of consequences for his actions just showed the kind of toxic love between the protagonist and the love interest that hurt themselves and everyone around them.

And so, despite how cute this manga appeared at times, it grew harder and harder to ignore all that was wrong with it and all the blatant issues cast long shadows over the strengths of this manga.

Continue to like the friend group, and glad we're getting more of the Kominato-Kou friendship and he's not just 'that guy obsessed with Murao'.

Not a fan of love triangles, but I'm tentatively here for the wrinkle Toma brings, in part because he's so earnest. I don't have a lot of faith that it won't end up going down an annoying route for me since Futaba's tendency to cope with her (understandable) insecurity is to trample over Kou's boundaries and act like an entitled brat, but *until* that happens, I'll enjoy it. Will say though, Sakisaka is really good at drawing cute/intimate moments.

Wish this story didn't cling so tightly to gender essentialism and hard binary/conformity lines, but I also probably shouldn't expect better given this manga's age and the story it seems to be wanting to tell.

Volume 4 was where the anime ended its adaptation so everything from here onwards is new to me. I did read parts of the manga when I first finished the anime but that was years ago (God I’m so old) and I don’t remember much of it.

“If the distance between us has brown I’ll just close it up again.”
Kou you’re so cool and dreamy.

Toma taking a bit out of Futaba’s snack rather than breaking it with his hands had me, Futaba and Kou screaming. I love a good love triangle.
