What do you do when your favorite author sends you an ARC of his new series and you have the chance to be the first ever Goodreads review for it? 1) Hyperventilate a little. 2) Devour the book. 3) Work on a legit review while trying not to sound like you’re being a kissass.
This book was a fun ride for me. Up until now, every main character in an Andrew Mayne book has been a seasoned pro at what they do, an expert, and the fun of each series is getting them to use their expertise in new situations and in novel ways.
Our hero in this book, Mark Greenley, isn’t like that. He’s 26 years old and while very capable, still not fully sure what he wants to be when he grows up. As his life gets thrown curveball after curveball, he has to evolve, quickly, to meet each challenge.
It’s fun watching Mark navigate not just his new set of circumstances with a found family and a dad who is finally not a mystery, but the shadow company his dad runs and the people operating it.
Aa always, Mayne delivers a smart thriller that captivates from beginning to end. You get to see glimpses into technologies and worlds the author is privy to that most of us mere mortals are barely beginning to understand.
I finished this knowing that Mark Greeley still has more to uncover and I can’t wait to continue on this journey. This book reaffirms why I’ll be a diehard Mayne fan for life.

Review of advance copy
OMG, Just no on this! Received an advance copy as a member of Amazon Prime and so far the only series by the author that I actually liked is the Underwater Investigation Unit.
This book was "out there" for me. Struggled to get through half of it and couldn't continue. A leading psychological training company, Summit Strategies relies on "tech" to train people but also has some millions of files in an underground storage "Vault", (manned by blind people (so they have no ability to read the files) which is basically blackmail used by Summit.
Paramedic Mark Greenley discovers one of the founders of Summit is his father -info kept from him by his mother and a strong NDA agreement. Mark is drawn to the company either by chance or on purpose and begins his trip down the rabbit hole of Summit.
At this point, I'd had enough. It wasn't entertaining for me.

Review of advance copy received from NetGalley
Thank you to Andrew Mayne and NetGalley for sending me an arc of “The Session”. While the plot wasn’t as gripping and fast paced as Mayne’s other works, it developed into a page turner and ultimately delivered!
I’ve read almost anything ever written by Andrew Mayne, so I’ve grown comfortable with the familiarity of the leading character’s dynamics, as well as their individual skill sets that they use to solve the crimes.
“The Session” brings in brand new players, so there’s a bit more world-building and character development that’s loaded into the beginning, but the momentum slowly builds, and ultimately still hooks you and takes you along for the ride!
I struggled a bit to keep track of all of the new characters, but I think that was necessary to weave together a narrative that is set in a large, shadowy, international organization.
Fans of Mayne’s other works will note that our main character Mark is just a “regular guy”, so this felt markedly different than following along with Dr. Theo Cray, Jessica Blackwood, Sloan McPherson, or Brad Trasker. One thing I enjoy about the specialists is the random facts that you pick up while reading a work of fiction. “The Session” didn’t deliver on that aspect, but it does make you think about how the rich and powerful can assert control and influence in ways expected, and unexpected.
Thank you again to NetGalley and Andrew Mayne for this opportunity to offer my honest review. I look forward to devouring the next Andrew Mayne title in the very near future!

Another enjoyable book by Andrew Mayne. Scary and yet plausible. Mark was a likable main character, most of the other characters not all that well developed.

enjoyed it, but…
I did like the book, but I like Mayne’s other books much better. That said, I did keep reading all day to finish.

Not for me
This story just didn't hold my attention. I read as many chapters that I could hoping something would pull me in. This book is just not for me.

Riveting
An excellent first introduction to Andrew Mayne. Thoroughly enjoyed The Session and feel it would also make an excellent film..

Weak
This book is either AI slop or Mr. Mayne is losing his touch. The storyline is fair however the storytelling is weak.
