Liza needs a break from her high-powered life.
From the very first paragraph of Summer at Flora’s House I genuinely felt a total sense of physical belonging. Reading it felt every bit as if I had come home as returning to Harris feels to Jamie. I could not have enjoyed this novella more.
Freya North’s writing is exquisite. Her ability to weave in the history, geography, geology and flora of the island in a totally natural way is astonishing. As Liza explores and gets to know Harris, the reader is alongside her because of the descriptions that are equally elegant and brutal depending on the personality the island is showing. Harris is every bit a living, breathing character in Summer at Flora’s House as are Liza and Jamie.
And my goodness did I love Liza and Jamie. Their first person viewpoints add intimacy and interest because it is as if they are sharing their innermost thoughts directly with the reader. Some minor characters from Christmas at Flora’s House and Spring at Flora’s House, like Shona, are familiar and comforting to encounter once again, but the fact that Jamie has a history with the island is just wonderful. He is like an anchor that grounds the narrative and makes it all the more believable. And just like an anchor, he can be moved and taken to new horizons.
As Liza and Jamie’s relationship develops it is mesmerising. I thought the way Freya North didn’t just give them a ‘will they, won’t they’ romance, but rather added a mature and realistic interaction, provided such a relatable and satisfying aspect to the story. In a sense, there’s no great drama here, but rather deep, deep human connection, hope and self-awareness. Summer at Flora’s House is written with such deft empathy that it’s impossible not to keep thinking about Liza and Jamie long after the final page is turned.
I also loved the concept of creativity; the art, the photography and the sense that perfection comes, in fact, from imperfection. Equally affecting is the concept of contentment and being true to oneself. It’s so hard to convey the intensity and emotion of the quiet moments in the story without spoilers, but Freya North is like a musician in her writing. It’s often the pause, the stillness, that is the most profound moment.
In case it isn’t obvious, I adored Summer at Flora’s House. It’s a beautifully written, absorbing and enchanting story of connection that feels, quite simply, perfect. One of my books of the year for sure!

I absolutely loved it! It was definitely the most relatable of in the series so far. It’s such a warm, atmospheric and feel-good read, with the beautiful Isle of Harris providing the perfect backdrop.
I really enjoyed getting to know Liza and Jamie. They’re both such interesting, relatable characters, and I loved watching their relationship develop as they dealt with their own pasts and unexpected changes in their lives.
The descriptions of Harris were gorgeous and made me feel like I was there alongside them, surrounded by the beaches, wildlife and stunning scenery. There’s a lovely mix of romance, friendship, family, humour and emotion throughout the story.
A beautiful story about fresh starts, finding yourself and letting life take you somewhere unexpected. I was completely swept up in it and didn’t want it to end.

This was another fantastic audiobook, in the Flora’s House quartet, and definitely my favourite so far.
I loved being back on the Scottish Isle of Harris in the Outer Hebrides, but during the summertime instead this time, although the weather was still very mixed like in the previous two books. This book is about Liza and Jamie. She’s a workaholic from Bristol, and he’s a photographer from Sheffield.
I really enjoyed the story of Liza and Jamie as they kept meeting each other across the island. I liked both of them, although Liza was a bit prickly at first. As I learnt her backstory I had a lot more empathy for her, and ended up liking her a lot. Jamie was very likeable from the beginning, as was his aunt, who he was visiting on the island.
Of the course the island is a huge character in itself in these books, making me want to visit, if only the weather could be guaranteed, and I could stay at Flora’s House.
It was a real delight to listen to this as Amanda Abbington’s and Simon Pegg’s narration was flawless. They were absolutely perfect portraying Liza and Jamie. I loved Amanda’s narration of the first book, so I knew she would be brilliant for this story as well. Simon Pegg is one of my favourite actors, so it was a real treat listening to him.
Highly recommended on audio, especially if you enjoy uplifting books set in Scotland.

This was a cute, short read that I enjoyed.
Liza goes to stay in Flora's House, to escape reality for a bit. She starts to paint, which is something she has just undertaken.
Then she meets Jamie, who is just visiting and the sparks fly between them, albeit a little slowly.

Set on the Isle of Harris, Flora’s House is a holiday home who has seen an array of guests coming to explore the island and enjoying the beautiful setting. The Christmas book is my favourite out of the three books so far, I found it so engaging even if I did guess what was going on. This and the Spring book haven’t had that warmth and I’ve found the characters unlikeable in them which is a shame as I’d hoped the books would have a similar feel. The descriptions of the setting though is one of the best parts of these books, they definitely make you want to visit.

Summer at Flora’s House is the third in a series of seasonal novellas from Freya North. All the novellas are set in the same house in Harris which featured in her wonderful book Little Wing. Each book takes place in a different season and introduces us to holidaymakers who have hired Flora’s House for a holiday. This time we meet Liza who is looking forward to two weeks away from her usual hectic lifestyle, taking time to relax and time to follow her passion for painting. The other main character is Jamie who isn’t quite a holidaymaker. He has family connections to Harris and spent some his happiest times on the island visiting his aunt and uncle. Although his uncle has now died, he still makes regular trips to the island to visit his aunt, now in a care home, and spend time in the landscape he loves. I so enjoyed reading about Liza and Jamie and finding out why they both seemed so adrift in life. Despite an unpromising first meeting, a friendship begins to develop between the two with strong hints that it could develop into a deeper relationship. If you have read any of the other novellas or Little Wing, you will be pleased to spot some familiar faces.
Once again the natural beauty of Harris plays a pivotal role in the story. Liza is an artist and paints beautiful miniature portraits of the plants and flowers of the island. Jamie is a photographer and his love is the natural geology of Harris, especially the rocks. This affinity with nature is shown to be so beneficial to the well-being of both characters. Beautiful beaches, wild coastal walks and wild weather also and are all so evocatively described. The deep connection between the land and the islanders is clear. Do have a look at the author’s website to see some stunning photos of Harris. As always, when I read one of these books, I find myself longing to return to the island. It has been a few years since I visited – maybe next year!

So enjoying this series which kicked off of course from the beautifully written Little Wing. I enjoyed this one more than the Christmas book, finding the story of Jamie & Liza more relatable & loving their individual creative pursuits - how each is more about what you leave out than how much you put in. Freya North’s writing is faultless. My mother lived on Lewis for many years & her descriptions are spot-on, really capturing the atmosphere of the Outer Hebrides. I love how each character arrives at Flora’s House with life issues to work through and there finds healing.
I listened to this on audio & the dual-narration brought the story alive. I’ll definitely listen again.

3.5 stars. This one took an awful long time to get going for a novella. In the end, I enjoyed it. These stories are very atmospheric and I find I can easily visualise where they are set, I feel like I’m there. I like the way this one finished up but I would’ve liked just a wee bit more of their story!

It was an absolute joy to visit Harris again in this moving, immersive, and ultimately satisfying story.
As always we have the evocative and lyrical descriptions of the landscape to delight our imagination and senses, and we see the healing balm which experiencing this place bestows upon all the troubled souls who stay there. Harris is a vitally important character in its own right within this series.
And speaking of characters, it's lovely to see now-familiar-to-us Hearachs like Dougie, Shona and Isabel cropping up again.
As for Liza and Jamie, we get to know them so well within the novella's 120 pages, such is Freya North's skill in realising and developing her characters. They feel incredibly real to us and we want them to find happiness so very much.
I loved the way that a very tentative friendship forms between Liza and Jamie, after its distinctly inauspicious beginning. One which could definitely blossom into something even more meaningful, but, that is left to happen very much 'off camera', because Freya North trusts her readers, their instincts, their empathy and their imaginations, to complete Liza and Jamie's story themselves.
This is a story about human connection and self-realisation. It's about being brave and courageous enough to step beyond one's comfort zone, to lower one's barriers, and to confront one's reality. It's about finding the confidence and fortitude to reach out for happiness and fulfilment, and, as you do so, lose the fear of what others might think. Useful lessons for us all.
This moving, funny, comforting and deeply satisfying read, is my favourite so far of this seasonal series. I relished this joyous, glorious, summer visit to an island I've never actually been to in person but feel I now know so well. I can't wait for Autumn's return trip! Highly recommended.

This was another beautiful, evocative book from the lovely Freya North.
This is the third of Freya’s novellas, based at Flora’s House on the Isle of Harris, and I was immediately pulled back into the spectacular beauty of the island, and wanting to know more about the characters I was introduced to.
The narrative has a dual POV - Liza who has travelled up from Bristol to stay at Flora’s House, and Jamie who visits Harris regularly to see his aunt who lives there. Liza is there to paint while Jamie is a photographer, and I loved the descriptions of their work and their thoughts while doing so.
Both Liza and Jamie are caught up in the magic of Harris - its tranquility, nature and splendour. For one it is an escape from a present life, while for the other it is a refuge - a place which has become a second home where life seems so much brighter. They are both such relatable characters that it was a pleasure to spend time in their company.
The author packs so much into these novellas of hers, and she is just brilliant at introducing her characters in a way which makes you become immediately invested in them. I loved the humour in the care home where Jamie’s aunt lives, and I loved hearing about the Postman’s Path which mirrored Liza’s and Jamie’s inner struggles in a physical way.
As with Freya’s other novellas, it’s a thought-provoking read, and raises the question about what to do if you’re really unhappy in the life you are living. Do you live life a certain way to please others, or do you take matters into your own hands and live the life you really want to live?
Every time I read these gorgeous books of Freya’s, it makes me want to see Harris with my own eyes. I loved seeing the photos, at the back of the book, of Freya’s visits there, and look forward to the day when I see them for myself.

Each season, the little cottage of Flora’s House, located near Luskentyre Beach on the Isle of Harris in the Scottish Outer Hebrides, welcomes a new guest and it’s now high summer. Liza, a corporate lawyer, is here on a two-week break to find a way back to herself. Will she get what she wants?
What a delight it was to return to Flora’s House and this beautiful island. Meeting new characters as the seasons unfold, learning about them and understanding them in the truest sense is such a wonderful experience and a gift.
Summer in the Outer Hebrides is nothing short of glorious! Freya's writing is incredibly nuanced and filled with rich descriptions of this land, its flora and fauna. I especially appreciated how she captures the moody weather of these isles, effortlessly shifting between bright sunshine and sudden downpours.
These elements play a crucial role in Liza’s journey of self-discovery during her holiday, as she seeks comfort, refuge, room to simply breathe the pristine air, be present and most of all, rediscover her passion for painting the machair, a botanical system unique to this region.
The added sweetness comes in the form of Jamie, whose POV and story intertwine with Liza’s, imbuing warmth, hope, humour & a forgotten sense of desire, attraction and real love back into her life. The side characters are a charming bunch who bring the novella to life.
There is a certain magic in these parts of the world that can heal, clear the debris of life and carve a newfound path that’s enriching & fulfilling for those who are lost and need a reset.

What a delight it was to return to Flora’s House and this beautiful island. Meeting new characters as the seasons unfold, learning about them and understanding them in the truest sense is such a wonderful experience and a gift.
Summer in the Outer Hebrides is nothing short of glorious! Freya's writing is incredibly nuanced and filled with rich descriptions of this land, its flora and fauna. I especially appreciated how she captures the moody weather of these isles, effortlessly shifting between bright sunshine and sudden downpours.
These elements play a crucial role in Liza’s journey of self-discovery during her holiday, as she seeks comfort, refuge, room to simply breathe the pristine air, be present and most of all, rediscover her passion for painting the machair, a botanical system unique to this region.
The added sweetness comes in the form of Jamie, whose POV and story intertwine with Liza’s, imbuing warmth, hope, humour & a forgotten sense of desire, attraction and real love back into her life. The side characters are a charming bunch who bring the novella to life.
There is a certain magic in these parts of the world that can heal, clear the debris of life and carve a newfound path that’s enriching & fulfilling for those who are lost and need a reset.

This is the third book in Freya North’s seasonal quartet of novellas set on the Hebridean Isle of Harris, centred around the little cottage that first captured readers’ hearts in her 2022 bestseller, Little Wing. And I think it may just be my favourite yet.
I’ve never been to Harris, but this is my fourth visit there through Freya’s fiction, and it feels increasingly like returning to a second home. Thanks to her wonderfully evocative sense of place, Harris is far more than a backdrop; it is the beating heart of these stories. Wild yet welcoming, rugged yet restorative, the island opens its arms and gathers you into the warmest of embraces.
The summer guest at Flora’s cottage is thirty-five-year-old Liza, an artist who has come to paint the flowers of the machair, one of Europe’s rarest and most precious botanical habitats. This is another gem of a novella in this wonderful series. Off to Harris I go again but in the Summer this time. And what is waiting for me this time. A magical story of joy, hope, believing in yourself, connecting with people all in the glorious setting of the Outer Hebrides.
We meet Liza and Jamie. Liza has escaped city live and is staying in Flora's cottage for a couple of weeks of quiet, calmness and to reflect on her live. Jamie, divides his time between his beloved Harris and Sheffield. The quirks and charms of our main characters are easy to love, so brilliantly written that they really do jump off the pages. I love that we also get re-introduced to characters from the previous books. It feels like we're meeting up with old friends again.
The descriptions of the flora and fauna of the island is wonderful. I feel like I am fully immersed in the minute details of the wild flowers, the unpredictable weather and following every footstep around this magnificent place. And flora's cottage is somewhere I'd love to stay in.

I love this series, about the holidaymakers who choose to rent Flora's House on the Island of Harris; part of the Outer Hebrides off of the NW coast of Scotland.
This book is about Liza, a burnt out solicitor from Bristol who rents the small cottage for 2 weeks over Summer, she intends to paint flowers and rest. She 'meets' Jamie, a photographer in an awkward way then meets him again whilst out painting.

I love this! Another gorgeous story from Flora’s little house. This is the third in the seasonal quartet of novellas set in Freya’s wonderful world from her amazing novel ‘Little Wing’.
I read this while on holiday in the south of Wales but once again it transported me to the stunning setting of Harris in the Outer Hebrides. Freya really has a gift for painting a truly vivid picture of this island, and although I’ve never been, I feel like I know it like an old friend.
Summer sees Liza staying on holiday in Flora’s house. An artist at heart, she wants to spend two weeks painting the wildflowers that grow in the unique landscape of the machair, while escaping her normal working life for a while.
After a disastrous incident in Tesco’s car park, Liza meets Jamie, another lost soul for whom the island is a magnet due to the time he spent there as a child and young man. Despite getting off to a bad start the two seem to be drawn to each other.
I loved these two characters. Their stories ring so true in a world where everything is hectic. They’re thoroughly believable and well rounded, and I loved getting to know them, as they got to know each other.
It was really lovely to see some of the other characters from previous books too, to find out a little about how they’re getting on.
If you’ve read the others in the series, it goes without saying that you will love this one too. If not, it can definitely be read as a standalone, although once you start you’ll definitely want to go back and read the rest!

Immensely satisfying as always. Liza visiting to rest, recharge and work out where she wants her life to go next. Jamie who has been visiting since his childhood, returns to see his aunt and work as a photographer. Their lives collide - literally on the first page and the story tracks the evolution of their relationship. The vivid descriptions of the nature, mountains and coastal areas are just so grounding and calming. I loved the references of characters from the other stories in the series and of course Flora from Little Wing.

I love this little series of novellas set on Harris. Each visitor to Flora’s house needs healing in some way and this time it’s artist Liza, come to paint the machair, who finds a friend in local photographer Jamie, and the peace and contentment she needs.
Each of these lovely little books gives me a real sense of what it’s like on Harris, and it’s lovely to see peripheral characters pop up time and again. A real weekend treat.

Another beautiful trip to Flora's House!
I already love this author... and I already love this series of novellas. So it wasnt a shock to love this story but wow I loved it more than I expected to! I adore how this author can truly bring you into the mind, heart & soul of her characters. And her characters are so real.. so normal.. Just reality playing out through the pages interwoven with the beautiful isle descriptions .10 /10 once again!!

Liza is wanting to be someone different away from her home and work in Bristol and Jamie splits his time between Harris and Sheffield. Harris is his refuge and his ‘home’.
Beautifully described on every page these series of books makes me want to visit Harris and see it for myself and follow in Liza and Jamie’s footsteps.

I absolutely devoured this gorgeous novella, which is a piece of art in itself, I don't just mean the beautiful cover but the story, the gorgeous location, Liza & Jamie, all of it!
This book is exactly what I needed & it has left me feeling inspired & with a smile on my face.
I'm so excited for Autumn at Flora's House coming out 1st October & before then I hope to read the other 2 books in the series Christmas & Spring.

I think we all can relate to Liza, the need to take ourselves out of the reality of our humdrum lives to find the reality of ourselves.
Another gentle, relaxing book which flows like a melody whilst transporting the reader to Harris.
