The Devil I Know, by Toni Hawkins, is a supernatural or paranormal romance novel. It might remind some readers of a more grown-up version of Twilight or the various Anne Rice novels.

The concept of a mortal woman being seduced by a non-human entity is nothing new. Vampires, werewolves, or in this case the literal devil often seem to wear seductive masks. It is their forbidden nature that makes them so alluring, as proves to be the case here. Just because the formula is rather rote, though, that doesn’t mean this book is. It’s spicy and written with a great deal of wit and a crackling, infectious energy. The romance and sex appeal common with this genre are much in evidence, as Hawkins proves more than capable of keeping the reader engaged.

It’s easy to get behind Carmen as a heroine. She’s plucky and passionate, while her vulnerability humanizes her. That’s what attracts Samuel to her, and he’s as smitten as we are as readers. As for the devil, he’s a smooth operator who never thought he would be so taken with anyone, let alone a lowly human. This mismatched pair are breaking the rules by wanting to be together, and it leads to shakeups in heaven and hell as immortal beings feel obliged to interfere in the doings of humanity. The romance and otherworldly or supernatural angles are balanced nicely by Hawkins, who clearly knows her audience and understands how to play to it effectively.

This is a dramatic, emotionally charged paranormal romance that blends heartbreak, temptation, and cosmic stakes with bold intensity. I enjoyed how Carmen’s practical, guarded personality contrasts with the dangerous mystery surrounding Samuel, giving the story an engaging push and pull. The romance feels larger than life, sometimes wildly extravagant, but that excess is part of its appeal. The book leans into passion, betrayal, supernatural danger, and destiny without holding back, which makes it entertaining and easy to get swept into. Carmen is the strongest part of the story because her pain, resilience, and intelligence give the fantasy elements a grounded emotional center. I especially liked the idea of an accountant facing divine chaos with logic and courage. Some moments feel heightened and melodramatic, but readers who enjoy intense romance, powerful supernatural figures, and high-stakes emotional conflict will likely find this a fun, addictive escape.

This is an intense, imaginative romance that blends heartbreak, supernatural danger, and emotional healing into a dramatic, addictive story. I enjoyed the way Carmen’s vulnerability is balanced with her strength, making her feel relatable even when the plot moves into larger-than-life territory. The romance has a magnetic quality, especially because Samuel feels mysterious, powerful, and impossible to fully trust at first. That tension kept me interested and made the emotional stakes feel high. I also liked the contrast between Carmen’s practical accountant mindset and the chaotic divine world she is pulled into. The story feels bold, passionate, and unapologetically dramatic, which works well for readers who enjoy romance with cosmic consequences. Some moments are very heightened, but that is part of the appeal. I found it entertaining, emotional, and full of imagination, with a heroine worth rooting for and a love story that feels dangerous and unforgettable.
