In this breathtaking conclusion to the Moonwind Mysteries, Mika must brave a criminal underworld and unmask an infamous killer before he strikes again.

It’s early spring in Stockholm, and thirteen-year-old Mika Moonwind is navigating a complicated new life—working in the very orphanage where she was raised and finally reuniting with her mother. When one of the ramshackle sheds that the Girls gang calls home goes up in a blaze, leading to a beloved member’s death, Mika jumps into action.

While the fire initially seems like an accident, Mika feels in her gut that something more sinister is at play. Detective Hoff agrees. It looks like murder. Suspicions lean toward a phantom killer known as the Black Viper. But why would a notorious assassin linked to murders across the country target this young woman in Stockholm?

Racing through Sweden’s criminal underworld, Mika must use her sharp observational skills and network of unlikely allies to stop this killer. Because Mika will always stand up for her friends, and those who remain must live on for the ones who didn’t make it. Mika and Detective Hoff are back in this thrilling final installment of the Moonwind Mysteries!

This was such a bittersweet read and I am in denial that this series is now finished! And if you're just now stumbling upon the Moonwind Mysteries I am equal parts jealous of you and excited for you. This may be a middle grade book series but it doesn't hold back. It's dark and gritty, and Those Who Remain is much the same.

Mika and Detective Hoff find themselves investigating the death of one of Mika's friends, Neve, who is part of a girls gang that rule the streets of Stockholm. What looks to be an accident is quickly debunked by Mika, who is ever vigilant and discerning of clues that others don't see. Mika and Hoff quickly uncover unexpected details of Neves's past and the case quickly turns dangerous.

As always, Mika and Hoff make a great team. I love that they trust each other despite all of their differences. It was nice to see all the major characters from the previous 4 books make an appearance but sad that one of her friends was killed. I do appreciate that these books have stayed true themselves. While the overall mood is somber and suspenseful I thought the ending was a happy one that tied everything together.

How sad am I that this is the last book in the Moonwind Mysteries series? Very! This MG mystery series has been such a great one to read, I’m so happy that I found it. But thinking that I won’t see Mika grow up to be a great detective, and for her and Detective Hoff to continue solving murders has me pouting like a kid over here.

In this last installment of the series, Mika and Detective Hoff work on solving the death of a member of a girls gang, a gang that they worked with frequently. Made to look like an accident, Mika is able to discern that their friend did not die in a fire, but was murdered. Using her uncanny abilities to see clues where others don’t, they’re able to find the murderer as well as catch a long sought after criminal.

I love little Mika, and I loved watching her solve crimes. Detective Hoff was so protective of her, they made such a good team. These books have been so fun to read, I know I’ll be reading this series over and over.

If you love thrillers and murder mysteries, or just want something fast and fun to read, this series is definitely it. But don’t be fooled, just because it’s middle grade doesn’t mean it doesn’t deal with some heavy subjects. Such a good series. Highly recommend!

Thank you NetGalley, Two Lions and Amazon Crossing Kids for the advanced reader copy.

I did not realize that this was the 5th book in a series when I requested it. I wish I had read the others because this would have made much more sense. But it was written well and I enjoyed the story.

Following a murderer Mika and Detective Hoff race around the city trying to catch the killer.
