When Seraphina Cole steps through the iron gates on a storm-lashed night, she expects to settle a debt.
Instead… she walks into a house that breathes, watches, and remembers.
And into the gaze of a man who looks at her like she already belongs to him.
Dorian Blackthorn isn’t just dangerous.
He’s obsession made flesh.
His offer is
Six months. One contract. Six rules.
• Do not enter the north tower. (No one who does comes back the same.) • Do not wander the corridors after midnight. (The house doesn’t like it.) • And never ask what’s buried beneath the house. (Some secrets should stay buried.)
Break them… and you won’t leave.
But the deeper Seraphina goes, the more the truth
She was never chosen by chance. The arrangement began thirty years ago. And the debt… was never about money.
Now the question isn’t how she escapes—
…it’s whether she even wants to.
The house was never empty. And Dorian Blackthorn… was never letting her go.
For readers who crave obsession, control, and love that feels dangerously close to ruin.
For this being a short book, it certain packed a small punch. Found this book on Kindle Unlimited!! Its only 76 pages long (that made me sad I enjoyed it) although I dont know why beside each chapter it says 'Revised'? To me thats an editorial note that should have been deleted. - also some of it was abit repetitive but it didnt take away from the enjoyment of the story for me. I feel with work, it could be possible to weave it into an actual novel by adding more show not tell, more depth and context. like I would have loved the pov of his brother or more about him & his father. and also. what of his mother?
The Villian's Obsession is by James Carter it is a Dark Gothic Romance Novella! I love Gothic Romance so I HAD to read it & im glad I did. It had me surprisingly from the start "That was the first thing I noticed — and somehow, it was the most unsettling detail of all. Iron that old, that rusted, that forgotten should have screamed against the storm. Instead, they parted in absolute silence, as if sound itself obeyed different rules at Blackthorn Manor. As if the manor had been expecting me." Like HOW?! I was instantly like..how..why..wtf? 🤣👀
From the beginning Dorian felt off, odd & and complete control freak, and I was constantly like Seraphina why put up with the shit, then remembered the why - which was like wtf?
The mystery of his brother was really interesting and intising it just kept me reading, and how Seraphina was determined to understand Dorian as a person and not the shell/phasade he put on.
The twist and the outcome was rather surprising beit I knew something had to be behind it all. I did minus a star or 2 because of the repetition & the lack of depth regarding the father/brother tho.
This one genuinely upset me. I loved the cover, and the blurb caught my attention. This had a Beauty and the Beast retelling from the start. But it was apparent from the start there was a clear pattern, such as the lines I’ve shown below:
The front door was already open. Not ajar. Open. Wide and deliberate — not the welcome of a host, but the patience of a trap.
Not stayed. Not retreated to. Preferred. As if the tower had been a choice.
Not something being moved. Something being read. The soft, rhythmic turn of pages. One after another. Steady. Patient.
It’s on almost every single page, and sometimes 2 and 3 times on a single page. A line or two of the story, and then something like Not here. Not now. Always. As if…
You get the drift. Then, I started to notice the author seemed to be saying a lot without actually saying anything. It really hurts because I lovvvvvveeeee a good retelling. But this wasn’t it:
It was OK. It's an interesting premise, and as the mysteries unfold, we discover layers of Dorian. Seraphina... not so much. I would have liked it to be longer and for Dorian's relationship with his father and brother to be explored more. I also would have liked Seraphina to have more depth. The author's flowery language isn't for everyone, but it does give it a mysterious atmosphere, in my opinion. It could be improved, and some descriptions could be clearer, but it's short and entertaining.
This story was good the plot was good but it was blotchy like the days were not ending properly and the next sequence of the story was starting rather abruptly. This book has a lof of potential to being great. Add a bit more to the story and a bit of spice and it could turn into a much longer competed novel. Overall it was pretty good.
I didn't know I was looking for a short story but I definitely enjoyed the synopsis this book offered. Upon opening to the first chapter I was locked in. I enjoyed the writing technique of this author and the storyline was different. I highly recommend if you're looking for a short sweet innocent book with character at this to your TBR you will not be disappointed
I love the cover of this book, it made me want to read it. I wish I could say I loved the book but sadly I can not. I think it has potential to be something great I hope he continues writing. I think working on the formatting of the book would make it an easier read as well.
It honestly just needed more. I get its a novella but there was so much left to be said in my opinion it had the bones to be something amazing with a little more time i dint really think the relationship was explored as much as it could have been...
