Just when you thought the fairies couldn't get any cuter. . . here come the baby animals!
Rachel and Kirsty to the rescue!
The girls are spending a week of their summer vacation at the Wild Woods Nature Reserve. They're going to volunteer as junior rangers -- which means lots of quality time with all the animals who live there! But Jack Frost has taken the Baby Animal Rescue Fairies' magic key chains. Even worse, he's planning to use the fairies' stolen magic to kidnap baby animals for his icy zoo.
Jack Frost is after baby zebra, Ziggy. The girls have to help Savannah find him before Jack Frost can add the little zebra to his zoo!
Daisy Meadows is the pseudonym used for the four writers of the Rainbow Magic children's series: Narinder Dhami, Sue Bentley, Linda Chapman, and Sue Mongredien. Rainbow Magic features differing groups of fairies as main characters, including the Jewel fairies, Weather fairies, Pet fairies, Petal fairies, and Sporty fairies.
Narinder Dhami was born in Wolverhampton, England on November 15, 1958. She received a degree in English from Birmingham University in 1980. After having taught in primary and secondary schools for several years she began to write full-time. Dhami has published many retellings of popular Disney stories and wrote the Animal Stars and Babes series, the latter about young British girls of Asian origin. She lives in Cambridge, England with her husband and cats.
Sue Bentley was born in Northampton, England. She worked in a library after completing her education and began writing for children once her own began school. Bentley is the author of the Magic Kitten, Magic Puppy, and S Club series and lives in Northamptonshire.
Linda Chapman has written over 50 children's fiction books, including the following series: My Secret Unicorn, Stardust, Not Quite a Mermaid, and Unicorn School. She lives in Leicestershire with her husband and daughters.
Sue Mongredien was born in 1970 and grew up in Nottingham, England. She has published over 100 children's books, including the following series: The Adventures of Captain Pugwash, The Magic Key, Frightful Families, and Oliver Moon. She has also contributed many titles to the Sleepover Club series and written picture books. Mongredien created the Royal Ballet School Diaries under the pen name Alexandra Moss. She lives with her family in Bath, England.
Savannah is absolutely giving wannabe Miss Frizzle, but I love her boots! Personality-wise, she’s easily my favourite. She was proactive, had a solution for everything (Rachel asked for a lasso and she conjured up a lasso) and knew how to use both the environment and her knowledge of the animal she has domain over to her advantage.
Okay, slight tangent; zebras using their stripes as camouflage is a very real thing - I looked it up! (The more you know, I guess.) I also think that this was highlighted really well through the book; first by having Savannah explain what camouflage is since the blue and white stripes of her dress blended in with Kirsty’s hat, then by having Savannah change herself and the girls into black and white dresses in order to blend in with the herd and stay out of the goblins’ sight.
The goblins were really fun in this one too! Honestly, the short goblin was an icon. He really said ‘I’m the only goblin with a brain cell, I don’t need a fucking magical object to get shit done’ and I love that for him. And the two goblins in that fuckass zebra disguise was actual nightmare fuel. (The one who was the head was so over it by the end, and I can’t even blame him.)
Other thoughts that are relevant to me: -The dialogue for the deer killed me. (Bonus points for them acknowledging that it’s weird that two human girls know how to communicate with them.) -Ziggy the baby Zebra was another great animal character, although I didn’t love him nearly as much as I loved Missy. -I have concerns about the illustration of the lasso because it was fairy-size in Rachel’s hands, but then goblin-size when the goblin was captured, so am I to just assume this magic lasso can change in size? -Menace!Rachel how I missed you! Threatening to tie the goblin up was the most in-character she’s felt to me so far.
Daisy Meadows and her fairies are my childhood. I collected so many in my youth, knowing all the fairies and their importance, and sticking with the two special girls who go to be a part of the magic. Years ago I had to give my beautiful collection away, now still part of my childhood school where little girls are picking their favourite fairies and playing pretend. It's fun to hear stories from my old teachers telling me how over the years so many students have grabbed these books and fallen in love with the tales of two girls, Jack Frost and the fabulous glittering magic that is the fairies. On Christmas last year, my sister surprised me with a boxset of these books, but cause you cannot collect these darlings as easily anymore. I was over the moon! If anyone has a little one who needs a little magic in their life, wants to read and needs a big creation to be hooked on...it is Daisy Meadows!
My daughter loves this series. I've been reading these with her and definitely enjoyed this one. Who wouldn't like a book with a baby zebra? It was cute and I recommend it to fairy and animals lovers.
My daughter loved this one. She lives zebras and was excited to have a story featuring them. She was eager to read the book every day and had no problem following the plot. She is 6 1/2.
