This is a beautiful historical fiction story based during the Vietnam War. The story is told is dual timelines between Nicole in 2000s looking for her sister in Vietnam and Mai during the Vietnam war.

The descriptions of Vietnam are lovely and highlight the landscape, the culture and the food.

I especially enjoyed Mai’s story during the Vietnam war. So often we hear about Vietnam from the perspective of the American soldier but this also allowed us to hear about it from the perspective of the Vietnamese people.

Parts of the story were definitely emotional. If you are a fan of historical fiction you should definitely give this one a go.

Full disclosure: I'm a big fan of Ann Bennett, especially her books set in India, Burma, and Nepal, and I've been waiting on the release of Mandarin Road. It was worth the wait. In a dual timeline, the story alternates between 2015 and 1968, mostly in Vietnam. The reader experiences the war through the eyes of a young Vietnamese woman and a young American Marine. This isn't light reading, as we witness horrific atrocities committed by both the Viet Cong and the Americans. This is a story of survival and consequences during the explosive Tet Offensive and beyond.

Mandarin Road was an emotional roller coaster for me. My cousin, a 19-year-old Marine, fought in the Tet Offensive, and my brother served in Vietnam too. My brother never spoke about his tour, and was a different person when he returned. My father was posted to the American Embassy in Saigon, so this book brought back memories of that chaotic time. I commend Ann Bennett for not making Mandarin Road a political statement about Vietnam, focusing on the tragic human costs of the conflict instead.

This was a very emotional and also intriguing read that pulled me in from page one. There is so much historical detail and the descriptions of Vietnam, the Vietnam War, the characters and their personalities are very vivid.
Just before Nicole’s father Ed dies he tells her a secret that he has carried around for most of his life. He served in the Vietnam War in the 60s, met a girl called Mai and fell in love. Their very short lived relationship resulted in a daughter. What follows is a very emotional and at times heartbreaking dual timeline story of Nicole’s journey to find her long lost sister and Mai’s story.
I found myself totally absorbed in this and felt that the interactions between the characters, the way the story developed and the way the characters emotions were expressed was brilliantly written.

is an incredible , amazing, compelling story of loss, love, resilience, courage, and sacrifice set during what the Vietnamese call the ‘American War’. This book tells the story of how the Vietnamese people were affected by the war. Once I started reading I was hooked.

Mai is a 17 year old woman who lives in a small village in Vietnam caught between the Viet Cong and American forces. In the middle of the terror on her village by both the VC forces and the American forces she discovers a wounded US marine in her barn. She helps him to recover, they fall in love, he leaves, and she discovers that she is pregnant. It was well known in Vietnam that Asian-American children were not tolerated. Mai flees to Siagon and faces poverty and severe discrimination for having a Vietnamese-American child.

A sweeping saga.

My only criticism of the book is having Vietnam as the setting it didn't do much for me at all.
The book was great and kept me interested throughout.

Anyone who was alive during the 1960s will remember the tragic events of the war in Vietnam. American soldiers supporting South Vietnam fought the communist Viet Cong troops from North Vietnam and both sides were guilty of horrific acts against the civilian population. In this moving story, successful American businesswoman, Nicole, is mourning the recent death of her father. Shortly before his death in 2015 he confessed to her that he had fathered a child in Vietnam in 1968. She is amazed but with very little information she travels to Vietnam in search of her unknown sister.

As the story unfolds, we meet Mai, a 17-year-old who lives with her parents in a rural village. Nervous about the Viet Cong soldiers who have been living in their village, she is surprised to find a badly wounded GI in her father’s shed. Ed is ashamed of the actions of some of his fellow soldiers, but he also mourns good friends who have died. He and Mai grow close but there is no possible future for them.

Nicole’s life is changed considerably by her experiences in Vietnam. The lifestyle is radically different, but she gradually embraces the food and travel events. Unexpectedly helped by an old American soldier who stayed in the East after the war she finds him difficult to relate to but meeting his mixed-race son, Long, makes her task much easier.

I had some knowledge of the war as my cousin emigrated to the US just in time to be conscripted to Vietnam. While my family were living in Singapore in 1967 he visited us on R & R and told us a little of the mayhem. However this intense story brought the full horror vividly to life. The resilience of a nation torn apart was amazing and it was good to read of the kindness Nicole experienced from many people in the country in 2015. The details of their everyday life in both time zones was fascinating. I would recommend this book to widen your understanding of the way mankind survives war and rebuilds its community and the story of Nicole and Long is heartening.

Mandarin Road by Ann Bennett is a powerful dual timeline novel that I read in just one sitting. I could not put it down. It is a heartbreaking read.
The action is set in 1967 and 2015 mainly in Vietnam, but briefly in America too as this is where the novel opens.
We see the futility of war. The Vietnam war was particularly hated in America – it wasn’t their war. There were many protests held. It was a cruel war with atrocities on both sides. The Viet Cong were cruel to their own people. The Americans were cruel too, burning villages and shooting the Vietnamese people. It was a war that no one could win. Mothers lost sons on both sides. “He was aggressive, difficult and demanding, but he was still very young to be fighting a war, and he was somebody’s son,” it was said of a Viet Cong soldier. And of an injured American, we hear; “he was not just an enemy soldier; he was a living, breathing human being who was in trouble.”
We witness the bravery of a young girl to help an injured American. Her heart is full of compassion.
A deathbed scene in 2015 sends a daughter overseas in search of a half sister that she never knew she had.
Babies with American fathers in the sixties and seventies Vietnam were often shunned, along with their mothers. Many ended up in orphanages through no fault of their own. But “a baby is a wonderful gift.” They never asked to be born.
This is a beautiful love story that is full of near misses. The reader’s heart breaks for what could have been.
I absolutely loved Mandarin Road. It is very beautiful and very heartbreaking.

I really haven’t read a lot about the Vietnam / American War (as it was called in the opposing countries), so when I came across this title, I was really keen to read it.

Nicole had no idea that her father had served Vietnam. So when he shared that with her as he lay on his deathbed, it came as a shock to her. Especially, when he tells her that he fell in love with a Vietnamese girl and had a daughter from that union. Before Nicole can get any more information, he passes away.

What proceeds is a dual time line story. First about how Ed and Mai happened to meet, fall in love and what happened after they parted.

The second part is Nicole’s as she goes to Vietnam and attempts o trace Mai’s journey and figure out where her sister went.

She is helped by an old Vet, Greig, now settled in Vietnam, and his son Long who Nicole is growing closer to by the day.

I enjoyed the historical part of the book a lot, there is so much to learn about that region and the terrible times they lived through.

I was fortunate to recieve an ARC of this book. It was perfect timing as I had been wanting to read something set in Vietnam and during the war, this book did not disappoint. I had recently travelled to Vietnam and I found the book to be accurate of the setting and the author did a great job of capturing the country and more specifically Ho Chi Minh City.

This is a dual timeline story that features two women and their connection through the same person. Mai is in love with Ed and has had to endure the pain of war while loving someone deeply. Nicole is the daughter of Ed and has taken a trip to Vietnam to learn more about their relationship and all that resulted from it.

You can feel the sights, smells and climate of Vietnam throughout the entire book. I thought the author did an amazing job on this while creating a captivating story that drew me in from the beginning. Highly recommend!!

Historical fiction fans will love this novel. From the very first page I was hooked and I kept reading until the end as I wanted to know what happened. The story was interesting and easy to follow. It's obvious that the author has done their research for the book as the attention to detail was spot on. I also loved the place settings in the story and there was a good cast of characters. I highly recommend it and I look forward to reading more by the author.
