I've been writing for a long time-- comics, games (like Destiny 2), books-- there's always *something.* But lately I've gotten into modern-day YA novels with the Alex Van Helsing series and now middle grade with the new Young Captain Nemo series.

This two part series is a collaboration between American writers and a French artist, originally published in French. The English translation is currently available on Kindle Unlimited.

The art is decent. Backgrounds and steampunk machinery are very well done, but the characters are somewhat lifeless. The visual imagination is good, but the visual storytelling is rather confused.

But that’s mainly due to the rather poor, stilted, and stereotyped writing. There’s a lot of wordy awkward exposition, very stereotypical characters, boring backstories to give a revenge aspect, trite set pieces, unnecessary and unrealistic romance ... it’s very middle of the road and unremarkable if competently delivered. The story is your average Hollywood action movie fighting the baddie who wants to take over the world ... boring.

A shame, as the art has real potential.
