Rate this book
A young woman is found dead in the pond behind Denise’s new home.

Then the autopsy changes everything.

It wasn’t an accident.

As the investigation unfolds, Denise becomes obsessed with the pond—watching, waiting, searching for answers the police don’t seem to have. But the deeper she digs, the more Justin begins to question her sanity.

Is Denise unraveling under the pressure of infertility and isolation?

Or is she the only one who sees what’s really happening?

Because someone in this quiet town is hiding the truth.

This was one of those thrillers that keeps you on edge the entire time.

The story builds around a quiet community where everyone seems to know something, but no one is telling the full truth. The constant feeling of people warning each other, and not knowing who to believe, made this feel tense and uneasy from start to finish.

I went into this thinking I understood where it was going, but the way everything unfolds took it in a direction I didn’t expect. It slowly layers the suspense and then shifts in a way that really lands.

If you like thrillers that make you question everyone and keep that unsettled feeling all the way through, this is definitely one to pick up.

The Pond Girls” by Nadija Mujagic is intense, suspenseful, and completely gripping from start to finish.
This book is filled with tension, paranoia, and a creeping sense of dread that never lets up. The atmosphere is eerie and unsettling, and the mystery keeps you hooked, constantly second guessing what’s real. I couldn’t put it down and flew through it in one sitting.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The Pond Girls was such an interesting and bingeable thriller. I literally read this book in five hours because I could not put it down. From the very beginning, the mystery surrounding the woman found dead in the pond completely pulled me in, and the tension just kept building from there.

When our FMC moves with her husband to this quiet suburban community in Vermont, the last thing she expects is to become wrapped up in a homicide investigation only a week after arriving. The pond sitting right in her backyard quickly becomes almost its own character in the story, and the obsession and paranoia surrounding it had me fully invested.

One of the things that really stood out to me was the manipulation from her husband. He constantly made her question herself and her reality, which added such an unsettling layer to the story—especially while she was already emotionally vulnerable going through IVF treatments. I really felt for her throughout the book.

This was a fast-paced domestic thriller with strong atmosphere, lots of tension, and enough twists to keep me engaged the entire time. If you enjoy suburban thrillers with unreliable feelings, manipulative relationships, and a growing sense of paranoia, this one is definitely worth picking!

Epic!

This was right up my alley in psychological thriller’s! Up to the very end, I seriously suspected Justin! Or at least…that he was involved somehow!
If anything, this story makes it very clear that you really can’t trust anyone! Because you never know what’s truly going on behind the scenes in others lives. No matter how kind or successful they appear to be!
And I hope that the new chapter in Denise and her husband’s life brings them full circle to joy, happiness, and contentment. Despite history that is gone and buried, because people can change for the better.
I truly enjoyed this read and definitely recommend!! I will be looking into more books by this author as well!

The Pond Girls is one of those thrillers that starts off kind of quiet… and then slowly pulls you into something way darker.

The setup alone hooked me…a woman moves into a new place and finds out a girl was found dead in the pond behind her house. From there, it’s all tension and that constant feeling like something isn’t right.

I liked how it builds instead of rushing. It leans more psychological, with that true crime vibe where you’re questioning everything and everyone. It definitely kept me interested trying to piece it all together.

If you like slower-burn thrillers that feel a little eerie and unsettling, this one’s a solid pick.

The Pond Girls by Nadija Mujagic is a beautifully written and emotionally powerful novel that explores friendship, grief, identity, and the complicated bonds formed during adolescence. The story captures the intensity of girlhood with honesty and depth, showing how relationships can shape a person long after childhood ends.

Mujagic’s writing is lyrical and atmospheric, creating a strong sense of place and emotion throughout the novel. The pond becomes more than just a setting — it symbolizes memory, secrets, freedom, and the emotional weight the characters carry. The author skillfully balances quiet reflective moments with tension and emotional conflict, keeping readers invested in the lives of the characters.

The greatest strengths is its characterization. The girls feel authentic, flawed, and relatable, each dealing with personal struggles while trying to navigate loyalty, belonging, and change. Their friendships are portrayed realistically, showing both tenderness and jealousy, comfort and heartbreak. Mujagic does an excellent job of capturing the vulnerability of growing up and the ways people can both heal and hurt one another.

The themes of trauma, self-discovery, and resilience are woven naturally into the story without feeling overly heavy-handed. While the novel carries an underlying sadness at times, it also offers moments of beauty, hope, and emotional connection that make it rewarding to read.

Overall, The Pond Girls is a thoughtful and moving novel that lingers in the reader’s mind. Nadija Mujagic delivers a compelling exploration of friendship and memory with poetic prose and emotional honesty, making this book especially appealing to readers who enjoy literary fiction centered on complex relationships and coming-of-age experiences.

WOW!! What an exciting psychological thriller!!
Justin and his wife Denise just moved to Vermont for Justin’s job in the military. A week after they move in, Denise hears about a murder in the pond outside of their new home. This murder puts Denise into a heightened state of nervousness, and she finds herself obsessing over this pond murder.
What is going on at this pond?
Along with the mysterious murder, Denise has been very stressed because she has been trying to get pregnant with no luck. She decides to go to group therapy sessions for women who are having fertility problems and thinks this will help with some of her anxiety and hopefully she can make friends. But, Denise feels that something isn’t right with a few of the ladies in the group.
Will Denise find evidence she is looking for, or is her sanity in question?

This book is full of amazing Imagery! I truly felt like I was watching a psychological thriller movie! The story kept me engaged and guessing the whole read! It’s very well written and exciting from beginning to end!

Nadija Mujagic is a must read author for me! She continues to amaze me with each book she writes!

I am so lucky to be an alpha reader for Nadija!
She knows how to write thrillers that grab and hook readers!

I received this as an ARC and leave my review voluntarily.

Denise and her husband Justin have just moved to Vermont and hope that the next round of IVF will succeed after many years of disappointment. Shorty after their arrival, a young woman is found to have drowned in the pond behind their house. The small town is shocked - especially when the autopsy reveals it was not an accident... Denise is really stressed about the IVF results and starts fixating on the pond constantly.

I read this book in a day, couldn't put it down, my mind was racing while formulating potential suspects (as you do). Oh how wrong I was!! The tension is razor-sharp and intense and Denise's unraveling was palpable - as was Justin's frustration at her obsession.

Thanks, Nadija, another blinder of a story that I inhaled. Your narrative is, as usual, descriptive and full of suspense. You expertly built the character's up in a way that I started to doubt many of them, haha. That ending threw me for a loop!!!! 🥰

Nadija Mujagic’s The Pond Girls is her latest book scheduled for publication on April 28, 2026. It can’t come soon enough, because I’ve enjoyed everything I’ve read from her, thus far!

It follows Denise and her husband, Justin, who recently move from Texas to Vermont. After a few years of unsuccessful IVF attempts, Denise hopes the new start will help make their dreams of becoming parents come true. Yet, it’s nearly impossible to concentrate on that when only a week after being in their new home, a dead body is recovered from the nearby pond.

A killer is on the loose, leading Denise down a path she might not be able to resurface from. The Pond Girls is a thriller that’s far from dead in the water! I was fishing for the truth, but the secrets were sunk so deep I couldn’t catch a thing! In quick, short, easy-flowing chapters, Mujagic delivers psychological suspense and danger with some memorable surprising twists!

***Many thanks to the author for asking me to be an Alpha reader. As with any ARC I receive, the thoughts expressed are my own.***

Start to finish I read this book in less than 24 hours because I NEEDED to know what happened! This was super fast paced and I loved that about this story.

As a long time fan of nadijas, this one was a must read. I wasn’t disappointed, but I never am with her stories.

Denise and Justin move all over the place because Justin is in the military, so they never know where they will end up. This time it was Vermont, from Texas (traded warm for cold, yuck). They have a view of a pond from their kitchen window. The pond is not one you can swim in, but the view is nice.

One week after moving in, girls start going missing. Lesley, then Mandy. Is it a coincidence that as soon as they move there, girls are murdered?

Denise is struggling to get pregnant and going through ivf, she’s having a really hard time with it mentally so her ivf dr suggests she join a support group. She makes friends with the others but notice they don’t focus much on Ashleigh. They say it’s because she always talks about religion.

If you’re looking for a page turner, pick this one up. You won’t be disappointed.

Denise moves to a new town with her husband, trying to reset her life while quietly dealing with infertility and IVF not working out.

Then a body gets pulled from the pond behind her house.

And yeah… she doesn’t let that go.

What starts as curiosity turns into full-on obsession. She’s watching the pond, asking questions, getting a little too involved… and when another body shows up, it’s clear something is very wrong here.

From that point on, you’re side-eyeing everyone. And I mean everyone—including Denise.

This was such a fun, fast-paced popcorn thriller. Super short chapters, constant mini cliffhangers… the kind where you keep saying “one more chapter” and suddenly you’re 100 pages in.

It gave me early Freida McFadden energy—quick to get into, easy to binge, and just messy enough to keep you hooked.

This is my third book from this author and definitely my favorite so far.

Not the most complex thriller, but honestly? That’s not what it’s trying to be. It’s entertaining, addictive, and very easy to fly through.

Denise and Justin just moved in to Vermont close to the pond, and their tryin to have a baby, and Justin is a military man. A week after they moved in, Kari was jogging around the pond and saw a body and turned out to be her sister Lesley unalived. And everyone knows that it ain't safe to swim in the pond. Denise goes into a heightened state of nervousness and continues to watch the pond. Denise doesn't have any friends here since she just moved here, but the Dr. wanted her to go to a support group with other women havin issues with the IVF process, and she is starting to hang out with some of the ladies but they all have secrets and who can Denise trust. This definitely was a roller-coaster ride, and the twists were really good.

I was lucky enough to be picked as an ARC reader for this Psychological Thriller. It was my first time reading a book by Nadija Mujagic and will definitely not be my last!! I didn't want to put it down. I thought I had the plot all figured out before I was even half way through...I was completely wrong!! The Pond Girls delivers as a gripping psychological thriller with layers of tension, mystery, and emotional complexity that pulls you in from the first pages. It delves into some very real subjects ie military life for the spouse and the struggles of conceiving, which I think a lot of people will find relatable. It's a very nice touch. Overall, this was a fantastic read that deserves a ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ rating.

The Pond Girls completely pulled me in from the very first page and didn’t let go. The atmosphere is haunting, the pacing is relentless, and the tension builds with every chapter. What starts as a quiet mystery in a small town quickly unravels into something far darker and more unsettling.

Denise is a compelling and relatable protagonist, and the way the story layers secrets, suspicion, and psychological tension is masterfully done. Every character feels like they’re hiding something, and just when you think you’ve figured it out--another twist hits.

If you love twisty, slow-burn thrillers with a chilling setting and a shocking payoff, this one is a must-read. I couldn’t put it down.

There was a lot I liked about this book. It was interesting right from the beginning and it kept building the suspense. I liked that there was a character named Laura who is similar to me. That hasn’t happened before.

I don’t want to give spoilers so I can’t be specific but there’s a topic I dislike being used in books in a negative way and unfortunately it was a big part of the second half of the book. Also I was a little confused by the ending but that could just be me.

Nadija Mujagic is one of my favourite authors and I look forward to reading all her books in future.

This book had the potential to be really great. A young couple moves to a new neighborhood and the wife soon becomes obsessed with the pond close to the house where bodies of young girls keep showing up. Her husband treats her like she's crazy, becomes a suspect, and she starts going to a support group of women who can't get pregnant. Fingers are pointed, she's told not to trust her new acquaintances and it's hard to know who to believe. As much as the suspense built, it didn't get that scary or mysterious and became rather predictable. There was a few slight twists at the end I didn't suspect, but I found this to just be an average book.

First thank you to the author for the ARC copy of this. This is my second arc from Nadija and this was a very solid Psychological thriller.

our main character Denise and her husband Justin move to a small town, but when they get there a woman has been murdered and left in the pond near their house. it causes Denise to become hyper focused on trying to find out what's going on that leads her to start acting crazy.

While the ending I did kind of predict there was one final twist that left me 👀.

I do recommend this as it was super fast paced, I finished in 24 hours

Wow, I loved loved loved this one! The cover is really gorgeous and the story was so intense that I did sacrifice my sleep so I could finish it! I was rooting for Denise after everything she went through - even more when she could not get a break even after moving into her new house.

Justin on the other hand - sometimes I wanted to whack him in the head. He did love Denise, but was not very compassionate at times in my opinion. IVF can result in your emotions being all over the place, and well…. anyway! The twist in the end blew my mind. Totally not what I have expected!

I loved this book! Well written characters that brought out deep emotions. I could feel for Denise. Denise and her husband move to what they feel will be an idyllic town with a beautiful pond to view out their window; but within days of moving in a dead girl turns up in that pond...and then another. Who is killing off young women and leaving them in the pond and why? Who is next? Denise is just trying to make friends and fit-in. Will that be her demise?

Thank you to the author for an advanced copy and also for putting my name in it

I was lucky enough to star as one of the characters in Mujagic's 'The Pond Girls'. I was so excited to read an advanced copy and see the role that I would play. I was not disappointed.

This is a tense, suspenseful read that kept me wondering about all the new people Denise was meeting in town. I love when I am suspicious of different characters, not knowing who we should trust.

A great read with a couple twists I wasn't expecting. I highly recommend grabbing this one when it releases later in April!

Justin and Denise have just moved into their new home, when a body is found in the pond across the road! Not a great start, for Denise who is already struggling with infertility this is not going to help her relax. When it is shown that the girl was murdered she goes down a rabbit hole! After joining a support group to make friends and have people that are in the same position as she is things take an odd turn with the ladies in the group, who don’t really seem to get along. Really good read!

Another ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ read by Nadija! Denise and her husband move to Vermont from Texas and like most moves they are not easy transitions. Then a body shows up dead in the pond near her house. Denise is still going through IVF which has it's ups and downs. Denise joins a support group for IVF patients and the friends she meets my not all be as they seem. With a good twist at the end this is definitely a must read for thriller fans! Thanks to Nadija Mujagic for letting me read this ARC!

I read an advance copy of this book and am leaving this review voluntarily. Denise and Justin move to Vermont for Justin's military posting.
Not far from their new home a young woman's body is discovered in a pond that frazzles Denise and makes her obsessive in wanting to know what happened to the woman. This is likely exacerbated by her IVF treatments and the stress of the move. Then another body shows up ...

The storyline pulled me in right away, but what really got me was how emotional it hit at certain points. There’s a moment with the FMC that just makes your heart sink. You genuinely feel for her, and it adds so much depth to the story.

And the mystery?? I was locked in the entire time trying to figure out who was leaving those dead bodies near the pond. Kept me guessing nonstop.

But that ending twist was phenomenal! Great read
