The Midwife by the Sea is another fabulous addition to Jo Bartlett’s books set at Cornwall’s St Piran’s Hospital. Heartfelt, moving and sensitively told, this is a story of the challenges wrapped up with the joy of found family.
Hope Masterson is a new and younger addition to the team at St Piran’s, and I immediately warmed to her. She wanted nothing more than to do the proverbial right thing, even to the detriment of her own interests. Finding that level of kindness among the current younger generations was heartwarming, as the media leads us to believe that self-absorbency and callousness are becoming the new normal.
There are a few threads in this book that could be difficult to follow if Jo Bartlett weren’t the author. Yes, the themes are sensitive, but they are handled with such care that I felt confident in continuing to read. That said, Jo doesn’t cushion the emotional blows, so I would definitely recommend keeping the tissues close by.
As I have come to expect, there is a strong cast of characters, many of whom have featured previously in the series, but if this is your first book, you wouldn’t be at a disadvantage. The gentle storytelling guides the reader through who’s who without rehashing the entire series.
Set across two locations, Tenby and Port Agnes, I could tell that each site had been thoroughly researched and immediately felt that all-important sense of place.
Despite the challenges faced by the characters, the story arcs were expertly handled and created relatable themes. The result is a beautifully satisfying, uplifting read. I loved it.
Wow, what can I say? Another absolute gem by Jo. This story resonated with me so much. I went through a similar experience. Me and my Husband struggled to get pregnant, for five years we tried for a baby we had three rounds of IVF and then out of the blue this 16-year-old girl turned up and announced she was my husband‘s daughter. Like Esther I struggled to come to terms with it. Without going into too much detail, about four months after she turned up we found out we were pregnant naturally with our first child. So this story was such an emotional rollercoaster for me. I sometimes think Jo has a telescopic eye into my life because so many of her books I can relate to my own personal experience. Having said all that, I would recommend this book as I do with all of Jo Bartlett’s books. Things didn’t really turn out for us the way they did for Joe Esther and Hope. I don’t have any sort of relationship with my husband’s daughter. He sees her when he can but that’s life.
Thank you to NetGalley and Boldwood books for allowing me to read this book before publication.
A very promising start to another fantastic series by the talented Jo Bartlett. Be prepared to become addicted! Gorgeous settings, gripping plot and a set of characters old and new you’d want to be your friends. With connections to both The Cornish Midwives series and The Cornish Country Hospital series and true to the feel-good tradition, this story will warm your heart, restore your faith in humanity and let you believe it’s a wonderful world. Brilliant.
With many thanks to Boldwood Books, NetGalley and the author for an early copy.
This is a book about Nora, who was adopted and grew up in a very loving family. When she became interested in finding out more about her medical history, she felt the need to find her birth parents. As she got closer to finding answers, she also had to decide whether permanently stepping into someone else's life and changing it was something she really wanted to do.
I enjoyed that this book presented the moral dilemma of such a situation. There is the urge to find out where you came from, and that feeling will never truly go away. But then there is also the moment when you have to ask yourself whether you want to potentially destroy the life that someone else has built for themselves. In this situation, there was even more pressure because Nora got to know the people around her and even became friends with them. She had to ask herself the tough question of whether her personal interests outweighed the happiness of others, and that moral dilemma came across very well. I really enjoyed that it was not presented as a simple issue and that there was no clearly right approach to such a situation.
While I appreciated many of the plot points and how they were presented, I did not always see the need to follow up on everything in the way the book chose to. Overall, it was a very emotional roller-coaster ride.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Those readers who are familiar with this author’s work will be aware of her two bestselling series of novels based in Cornwall. Firstly, the midwives of Port Agnes in The Cornish Midwives and secondly, the medics of St Piran’s in The Cornish County Hospital. The Midwife by the Sea works a standalone and effectively bridges the gap between the two and brings a heartwarming story about Hope Masterson who arrives in Cornwall to work as a midwife at Port Agnes and also with the community midwifery team at St Piran’s hospital.
It’s such a delight to be back in Cornwall with familiar characters and whilst Hope’s addition is new she soon becomes integrated into the story arc. I enjoyed observing her dilemma as she searches for answers from her past and followed, with interest, the emotional upheaval her arrival had on other much loved characters. The author, as always, tackles some really difficult issues, especially the hospital scenes which are detailed with sensitivity and a warm understanding of human nature. Covering adoption, infertility, trauma and emotional pain the story certainly packs a punch but does so with a lovely light touch and some really special moments.
The Midwife by the Sea is a lovely heartwarming story about the bond of family, friendship and second chances.
Hope has known that she's adopted for most of her life. Her adoptive family, the Mastersons, welcomed her into their family and treated her the same as their 3 daughters. She has wanted for nothing, but when she had an unexpected conversation with her biological mother, Laura, she begins to yearn to meet her biological father Joe. Hope, a trained midwife, takes a position at St. Piran's Hospital as a midwife, and also doing some community work in the Three Ports area.
Working at St. Piran's puts Hope in close contact with Joe and his wife Esther, along with many other people familiar to those who have read prior books in the series. But Esther and Joe are in the middle of an infertility crisis, and as a midwife, Hope knows the emotional tale infertility brings with it, and is reluctant to approach Joe. But when a family member of Joe's overhears a conversation, she has no choice.
This was a touching, wonderful story. I always like seeing the progression of prior characters as well as introduction of new. I'm sure that future books will introduce us to at least 1 new character, and I'm looking forward to meeting them!
Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book, but my opinions are my own.
It is becoming very apparent to me that Jo Bartlett and midwives go hand in hand, as this is now the start of her second series featuring them. In fact this one is very much related and interlinked with both of the author's previous two series set in the Three Ports area of Cornwall.
So we are treated to a whole host of familiar characters, if you are a regular reader of the author, including Gwen who I'm always happy to see pop up, while it can easily be read as a standalone.
I loved getting to know our new main character Hope, who is working in the settings for both previous series, the community midwife unit and St Piran's hospital. I loved being back at the community midwife unit, and this really was a book that felt instantly familiar to me.
It was a truly enjoyable story, that I loved every moment of and couldn't read quick enough. It was emotional in places, and Hope has some incredibly tricky decisions to make, and I really admired how much she cared for other people and not just for herself.
I already can't wait to read more from these characters.
Thank you to Boldwood Books and Netgalley for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
I was invited to read a pre-approved copy by Boldwood Books on Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own. A young woman’s quest for her roots and history happens in “The Midwife by the Sea”, by Jo Bartlett, a story set in a friendly, hospitable Cornish community where everyone seems to fit and enjoy living. Hope’s personal mission is hard and brings many doubts, insecurities and fears, but there’s an underlying sense of rightness that prevails. I liked the young midwife and the other characters: they interact and bond easily in the small town of Port Agnes. Every character seems kind and authentic in personal relationships and competent in their jobs, even if they have flaws and insecurities. The way Hope and Joe connect is almost too perfect. The story addresses serious issues that seem well researched. I felt there was too much dialogue and talking about feelings and emotions too freely. I usually enjoy the medical scenes but felt there were perhaps too many and the birth procedures didn’t grab my interest.
Another heartwarming Jo Bartlett Cornish hospital episode, and it's standalone and connected at the same time. I love it when Gwen appeared with her goodies cart in the hospital making her rounds, to provide some good advice (usually) and she has been the familiar character in so many of the books.
This time, quite farfetched you might think, and yet it's totally plausible - Hope comes to the hospital as a new midwife and to find her biological father to get to know more about her medical history. Which is very fair - if her father had her when he was a teenager at 16 - now he is 26+16 =42? and just about to start a family of his own without any knowledge about her existence, I can see his whole current life might change if he doesn't have an understanding partner who can accept this sudden lifechanging appearance from his past. '
Very glad to have read it - the underlying theme of adoption and fertility issues also resonate very much as a mother. Looking forward to the next book in the series!
would like to thank netgalley and the publisher for letting me read this emotional book
ohhh man this storyline hits deeps.... and can cause triggers for some people but its also a brilliant series and its great to catch up with favourite characters and this one adds a certain element to it that will be great to catch up with in the next book
hope always knew she was adopted... but she grew up in a loving home but for medical reasons she needed to find her birth parents luckily for her a window was open for her to do that with one of them....
hope also starts her new job in st pirans hospital as a midwife and as she starts to make friends her secret could cause ructions for everyone .... can she reveal her secret or will she be better off leaving.... only time will tell
what a storyline i had tears at the end of the book... looking forward to the next book in this brilliant series
I enjoyed meeting up with some familiar faces in this return to St Piran's hospital. Esther and Joe find that they are about to have their lives turned upside down after Hope arrives with some astounding news. There are some interesting story threads which takes a look at unexplained infertility and the toll it takes on a couple and their extended family. Adoption issues are skilfully interwoven into story with the bonds created in a family highlighted. Hope is an amazing character who I am hoping we will meet again. A talented midwife, she has intuition and empathy for her patients. You also meet up with Danni, Joe's sister and Esther's best friend who finds herself put in a difficult position and her friendship with Esther is challenged though never in doubt. Most of all the midwifery team and life in the hospital shows us the bonds of friendship and compassion amongst the tight teams who work there. Highly recommended
Hope, a midwife, arrives at St Pirans with a compelling backstory. While Esther and Joe’s return from a previous novel isn’t necessary to enjoy this book, it’s a lovely touch.
This book explores some sensitive issues, delving into the emotional impact on everyone involved. It’s a lovely to see familiar faces from the Cornish midwife and Cornish Country Hospital series return.
You won’t be disappointed. The book sensitively covers all the issues while keeping you engaged in a captivating storyline.
If you’ve enjoyed any of the other series you’ll most definitely enjoy this but it can also be read standalone.
The Midwife by the sea is the first instalment in another fabulous series by this wonderful author. We are again transported back to beautiful Cornwall and to St Pirans where we meet new characters and are reunited with old friends in the form of our much loved characters from previous books by this author.
This story took me on a roller coaster journey of emotions as it covers some very difficult topics all of which are dealt with and discussed in a very sensitive and mindful way to create this beautiful uplifting read set against a stunning Cornish backdrop.
I am looking forward to the next instalment of this series already.
Hope takes a job as a midwife, working between St. Piran's hospital and the community midwifery unit of Port Agnes. Hope has always known that she was adopted and has decided to find her biological father. As she becomes involved with the community, revealing herself to her biological father is more complicated than she thought it would be. Heartwarming story that also deals with heartbreaking struggles with infertility. #TheMidwifebytheSea #BoldwoodBooks #NetGalley
This book is a cosy easy read. The midwifery aspects were really well researched so much so that I thought the author must have been a midwife herself! This was pleasing as sometimes it can detract from the story when clinical practices are inaccurate or unbelievable.
All the characters are likeable (in the end), it took some time to warm to Esther but by the end of the book my view had changed. Hope was a thoughtful and kind female main character.
Another wonderful book from Jo Bartlett. It was lovely to have characters from The Cornish country hospital and the Cornish Midwife joking with new characters in this book. Hope arrives from Tenby to work in St Pigrans Hospital and midwifery unit. Along the way she becomes friends with hospital favourites. Not wanting to give too much away but many surprises can be seen along the way. Thanks Jo. Please keep writing.
Back with our favourite midwives and hospital staff, all like old friends - we are introduced to Hope, a young midwife from Wales who has taken the job to suss out her biological father. All does not run smoothly and her story is cleverly woven around several of the main characters from the other books. Straight into a story and no rambling, this is a”can’t put down” book from page 1. Absolutely brilliant and I can’t wait for the next!!!!
This is such a heartwarming story. I loved Hope. She is such a sweet young woman. She tries to help everyone. She has a huge heart. I felt bad for Esther. She so badly wanted to be a mom. This book is all about families, birth and adopted. Infertility is discussed a lot in the book. Hope is a midwife so babies is a very big theme in the book. It has a wonderful happy ending.
Hope Masterson has arrived in Cornwall, to take her dream job by the sea. She loves the community, her cozy flat, and the friends she's making. But Hope has a secret. Something that she thinks would cause problems for people she has started to care about. What a cozy read this was. Very well written, with well developed characters. Highly recommended.
Hope arrives in Port Agnes to start her dream job as a hospital/community midwife. She feels at home in the wonderful village, makes good friends and impresses everyone with her midwifery skills. An overheard conversation threatens to upend her life and upset other people? It's such a warm book in a wonderful setting. The characters are amazing and you feel as though you have always known them.
The Midwife by the Sea: A Heartwarming Story Of Community family Bonds and Love: Jo Bartlett
What an amazing, heartfelt story of adoption, finding friends in the Midwives in the new Hospital and family too. I throughly recommend you read this amazing book. I just couldn’t put it down. x
I do love the Three Ports stories, especially the ones involving babies and all things pregnancy. I know it's never too late to retrain but I'm 51 now & I've had MS for 20 years so I think that would be some stumbling block for me. Maybe in my next life.
A fabulous start to a new series which I found emotional and heartwarming in equal measure. Lovely to catch up with some old favourites. A sensitive subject beautifully and carefully written about that made me want to hug the main characters.
Brilliant from beginning to end, i enjoyed reading about some of the old characters, and 6 ones' emotional and heartwarming love ending was just amazing, another brilliant book from Jo!
The story was very real as my husband is adopted. His story is nothing like the book and to have a new story with Hope and the ups and downs were good to read. I think it’s the best book in a long time and worth a read.
Just read The Midwife by the Sea and it is a great story as all of Jo’s books are 😀 I love the midwife books but this is a lovely story and I can’t wait to read another instalment x
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC copy
An excellent start to a new series . The background for the future appearances is well set up . Jo tackles head on but sensitively the issues of fertility and also adoption
