Expected 20 Oct 26Writer Deniz Camp and artist Stipan Morian, the powerhouse creative team behind 20th Century Men, arrive at DC's revived Vertigo line to take readers on a zombie adventure that’s filled with heart (lots of them).
The zombies won—and 10 years after the fall of humanity, they’re the dominant form of life (or not-life) on Earth. They’ve developed their own cultural practices, their own language, their own society, all organized around hunting and devouring the few living humans unlucky enough to still be fighting for survival.
Mouse-Pokes-Golf-Ball-Through-Hole-In-Head (“Poke” for short) is a valued and beloved member of the Brain-Splashes-and-Sizzles-On-Hot-Rocks Horde of the Undead. With his brother-in-arm Mush, he's happy to shamble along through the only world he can remember…until the day his heart mysteriously starts beating again. And in a blink, the first humans he sees have stopped looking like food and have started looking like…friends…?
Absolute Martian Manhunter writer Deniz Camp and artist Stipan Morian (the iconic team behind 20th Century Men) reunite to bring you a zombie-filled world ruled by ruthless kill-or-be-killed logic, pitted against the demands of a single beating, bleeding, emotional heart!

Read as single issues. Damn, this was just really good. Fresh take on the zombie genre for sure. Funny, gruesome, but also extremely heartfelt. The art is spectacular and the writing is incredibly engaging. Really loved this one.

I love Deniz Camp as a writer and think that he does some very creative stuff when it comes to exploring humanity and what it means to be a person. Often, his characters are struggling to figure out how to do the right thing, and Bleeding Hearts is no different, with Poke, a zombie with a beating heart, trying to grapple with his state as an undead and the feelings he has towards life, purpose, and the desire to find his place. A lot of the story is reinterpreting the zombie world to act like a community of people (ie zombie politics, holidays, lingo, etc.), and in some ways this can take away from the core of the narrative for me. At a certain point, the zombies are just pale reflections of us, which is obviously the point, but I find the trope of what if our ___ but with a fantasy species/civilization to be tired.
The core of the story, Poke exploring his "humanity", moves very slowly and feels bogged down by the regurgitation of the same themes over and over again. Everything feels like it moves painfully slowly, yet at times I still find myself turned around due to the art. It's beautiful and expressive (though not to my tastes), but I find myself confused with how certain page layouts are meant to be read or interpreted. Particularly any action sequences can feel a little funky, as the art is more suited towards introspection and more grounded moments.
Overall, I enjoy the ideas being touched on here, but I don't feel especially compelled to read more. I might give a volume 2 a chance simple because I enjoy Camp's work at a baseline, but this one didn't necessarily do much for me. It's worth noting that I'm not a big zombie guy either, so it could just be the subject matter as well.

A zombie story with dark humor. One zombie starts to feel sympathy for humans, and betray his horde to help them. It's often cute (in a grisly way), but I don't feel like the characters or world have been fleshed out at all. The zombies say contradictory things about whether they think the "live ones" are also intelligent, the people seem incapable of keeping themselves alive more than a few days, and Poke's sudden empathy is not yet explained.
2.5 stars rounded up, but it will need to start explaining this stuff in the next volume to hold my attention.

Got the ARC for this delivered to my job the other day and I couldn’t help myself. I can’t think of the last time I read a comic book and this one has completely blown me away. I can’t wait to read more once this is actually published…WOW!!!!!

A really solid Zombie story. Basically getting into both the minds of the survivors and the zombie, one that maybe doesn't wanna do what he's always did, eat humans. It's funny at times, pretty awesome vertigo style 90's art, and solid script. I'll read more for sure.

I thought this was a well written graphic novel. The storyline was interesting. It wasn't my style personally but it's done well.
