Philip Hawksbury, the Earl of Rothermere, obeying his father's dying wish, hies himself to Scotland to offer for one of the daughters of Alexander Kilbracken, the Earl of Ruthven - Frances Kilbracken.
The story was very intrigued from the beginning. However, I didn't like it much. I put 4 stars because I like Catherine Coulter books and couldn't give 3 stars since her books always have written very detailed and good, and steamy or hot.
BUT... This story gave me impression only for 3.5 stars. WHY? I will explain.
The heroine MORE than the hero of this novel started to pissing me off when I reached the pretty number of the pages. It was fun at the beginning to read when Frances dressed as an ugly girl just to make Philip not wanting to marry her and picking her sisters, the man her father picked for all of them cause of his promise to Philip's dad (Philip's father saved him, Alexander, from the bandits). I thought, okay, this narration can lead me to something very twisted, amazing and romantic, and soon Philip will discover her, perhaps, will take her ugly glasses off, get rid her hairs off the bobby-pins, and see her beauty. And when he will marry her, he could see her kindness or any good manner (when she stops to be so stupid in her idea to be ugly and silly, and just make her husband hate her) and make her fall in love with him.
But it didn't happen. Nothing romantic didn't happen.
Philip decided to do what he wanted, not asking what Frances wants (because she is not so beautiful and silly, and not attractive at all.) He forces her to have sex with him, using some creme, because he needed the heirs as any rich man wants. I was... oh... that's very cruel and a very low move from him.... but...I read the darkest levels of Dark Romance, and there are heroes were kind of bastards like him... And I thought she will hate him till the rest of his life. But why did she agree to marry him then? A VERY BIG QUESTION. Right? If she felt that he is so arrogant and bad for her? Just to save her family? No, I do not think so. She just wanted to show him her independence because she never met such assholes like him and she wanted to make him obey...somehow...
But Frances was not so smart for me, and, I can say, stupid, if she didn't want to make him fall in love with her and at least, asking her stepmom how to please her husband because men are men and want sex. This is an obvious fact. But...if he was so beautiful to her (in her thoughts) and she liked him, wtf she behaved like an innocent girl, telling him like she hates him and doesn't want him at all. It was clearly from that scene when she saw him naked near the lake not far from her castle (as he came to the Scotland) that she liked him. Why she had to pretend and make all this farce?
Yes, Philip had no right to force her to have sex with him (he is a bastard!) but she was not right either. Why she didn't do any step towards him and understand how his father treated him badly and force to marry her? Did she have no heart? Oh my...
Then more I read, then more I understood that she married him just to rule his estate. I had no other reasons. Why? Because when her father-in-law told her that she is a hostess in his house and she can do anything she wants (since she became Philip's wife) her mood changed instantly and started doing everything in her will. And boom, she became so happy. But why no one thought what Philip felt? Uh? NO ONE. Even his friends except his mistress.
And Philip's dad was kind of a badass because he pretended he was sick like going-to-die-soon and because of that Philip decided not to upset him and marry Frances or whoever he could choose. I thought WHAT???! How his father can make Philip do this? Why he couldn't invent something more pleasant and romantic for his son? For example, Philip and Frances could know each other better and become closer. I was very disappointed in him, and thought, perhaps, everyone are mad in this story except the smart Philip's mistress. Lol.
When I read about 70 percent of the book, I started to understand why Philip was so angry, so frustrated and so furious about Frances' behavior. She constantly mocked him and made him feeling like he is an empty place for her and the silliest man in her life and Philips's father supported her in that. I thought... Why Philip couldn't have this right to be such an ass if his wife behaved like a bitch towards him and his dad was a monster because he only scolded Philip, not even asking him what does happen into his soul and why he went to London. It is clear why Philip was such a bastard towards Frances because his father was the worst bastard as well, pretending that he was ill.
However, only Philip's mistress helped him to see a woman in Frances and seduce his wife pretty soon. And especially she told him how he had to behave near Frances and win her love. NO ONE ELSE did that. I thought, why so many stupid characters were in this novel and only Philip's mistress was the smartest one? Why no one in a big Frances's family (INCLUDING HER FATHER!) didn't tell her what to do to be happy and start living happily or work on her happy life with her husband? Did Frances want Philip hate her till the rest of her life and then send her back, to the Scotland, to her dad? Did she not understand that she could ridicule her father and she could disgrace her own family? I have no words.
This book was the worst in this series for my opinion because of the characters' behavior and their stupid conclusions. And I can say, since I read all three books the best one was CALYPSO MAGIC. Their characters were quite smart and loveable.
