Freedom of Money: A Memoir of Protecting Users, Resilience, and the Founding of Binance

Rate this book
In Freedom of Money, part memoir and part manifesto, Changpeng Zhao, widely known as CZ, tells the remarkable story of his life – from his early childhood in rural China, living in a home with a dirt floor and no running water, to immigrating to Canada as a teenager, to building Binance from a tiny operation founded with a few friends in 2017 into a 300-million user platform that became the largest crypto exchange in the world, with a $100 billion valuation as of 2026. Taking readers behind the scenes of crypto’s explosive rise, the book chronicles the high-stakes risks CZ navigated as the industry faced volatility, scandal, and mounting geopolitical pressures.

CZ offers a first-hand look at the pivotal decisions and guiding principles that propelled Binance beyond competitors. He also shares his insights about attracting top talent, inspiring intense dedication, and driving relentless innovation – emphasizing the importance of transparency and prioritizing clients’ interests in a market many believed was already saturated with exchanges. Illuminating the inner workings of Binance and the cryptocurrency industry, he also shares his views on the vital role crypto can play in expanding global financial access, particularly for the legions of those in developing countries with no access to traditional banking services.

Addressing controversies head-on – including the implosion of FTX and its co-founder Sam Bankman-Fried, and the increasing politicization of regulatory scrutiny of the industry – CZ provides an unflinching account of his own pursuit by the U.S. Department of Justice, Securities and Exchange Commission, and other U.S. federal regulators. He was accused in early 2023 of a single charge of Binance violating the Bank Secrecy Act, which involved not completing required paperwork, in its early days, for allowing U.S. persons on its platform, and whether one of Binance’s compliance programs was subjectively effective enough under U.S. law. It’s often ignored that Binance was not physically operating in the United States and other nations view U.S. attempts to regulate non-U.S. persons’ activities abroad, like here, as violations of international law. No accusations of fraud, or of money laundering, were made.

Assured by his lawyers that no one had previously been criminally prosecuted for this single violation of the Act, and that he would not receive a jail sentence, he voluntarily flew to the U.S. to plead guilty to the charge. Binance ended up paying a fine of $4.3 billion, CZ was personally fined $150 million, and he was sentenced to four months in prison, during which time he wrote most of this book. Upon his release, he was detained by the Department of Homeland Security for overstaying his visa, despite the fact that he had overstayed due to being ordered to remain in the U.S. over his objections and imprisoned. The details of his experience are as appalling as they are riveting.

As the cryptocurrency industry continues to evolve, CZ offers a rare perspective, from the highest levels of both its promise and potential pitfalls. Freedom of Money is a must-read for anyone interested in the future of crypto, financial markets, and financial independence and freedom for everyone. History tends to move forward through those willing to act decisively, as CZ did as a legendary innovator, and speak candidly, as CZ does in this book.

Not a fan of cryptocurrencies, but I admire Changpeng Zhao, his vision and drive stand out. With a strong IT background and years in finance, he dives deep into Bitcoin and builds his own world around it.

The core idea behind Binance, giving people more control over their finances and increasing transparency sounds powerful. Whether that vision truly holds up is another question. If it does, it’s transformative. If not, it risks being misleading.

The writing isn’t polished, but it’s direct and full of ideas. It sits somewhere between memoir, tech, and finance. I don’t use Binance, but I still enjoyed the book, especially the context and the author’s story.

Reading 'Freedom of Money' felt like a deep dive into the ethics of innovation, While many focus on the 'success' of Binance, CZ focuses on the 'resilience' required to protect it, For me, the most striking part was the transparency regarding operational security and the relentless focus on user protection, It’s a rare look at the heavy burden of responsibility that comes with building a system where trust is the primary currency, This isn't just a memoir, it's a blueprint for anyone who believes that technology must be anchored in integrity and a user-first mindset, A definitive guide for the next generation of builders.

I didn’t expect Freedom of Money to hit the way it did, honestly. I picked it up thinking it would be another “founder story meets crypto hype” kind of book, but it turned into something way more personal, raw, and surprisingly reflective.
What stood out to me the most is how grounded Changpeng Zhao (CZ) comes across. You go from reading about a kid growing up in extremely modest conditions in rural China, to a teenager adapting to life in Canada, and then suddenly you’re inside the mind of the guy who built Binance into a global powerhouse. That contrast alone makes the whole journey feel real, not exaggerated.
But what made the book actually stick with me is how honest it feels when things get uncomfortable.
The sections about the rise of crypto are exciting, sure, but the parts about pressure, regulatory uncertainty, and especially the whole situation with the U.S. authorities… that’s where it becomes something else entirely. You can feel the weight of those decisions. Whether you agree with every perspective or not, you understand what it’s like to be in that position, making calls that affect millions of users and an entire industry.
The way he talks about the collapse of FTX and Sam Bankman-Fried is also interesting, not in a sensational way, but more like a reflection on how fragile trust is in crypto. That part made me realize how much of this space is still built on perception and credibility, not just tech.
What I personally appreciated a lot is his philosophy around building teams and culture. It’s not just “hire smart people,” it’s about alignment, speed, and conviction. You can tell Binance didn’t grow because it was perfect, but because it moved fast and adapted faster. That’s something a lot of people underestimate when they look at successful companies from the outside.
At the same time, I feel like the book quietly teaches something important about crypto that most people miss:
Crypto is not just about making money.
It’s about access.
CZ keeps coming back to this idea, and it makes sense, especially if you’ve ever seen how limited traditional banking can be in certain parts of the world. For someone in a developing country, having access to a wallet is sometimes more powerful than having access to a bank account. That perspective is easy to ignore if you’re only looking at charts and trades.
It really fascinates me, how someone operates mentally when billions are at stake and the entire industry is watching.
Also, I think the book indirectly raises a bigger question that’s worth thinking about:
Where is crypto actually going from here?
CZ clearly believes in a future where crypto expands financial freedom globally, but reading this in 2026, you can feel that we’re still in a transition phase. Regulation is tightening, institutions are stepping in, and the “wild west” era is slowly fading. It would’ve been interesting to see an even more detailed vision of what the next 10–15 years look like from his perspective.
That being said, this is one of those books that feels personal, not polished to perfection, but real. And that’s exactly why it works.
I’d genuinely recommend it to anyone, not just people into crypto. Whether you’re into business, startups, or just stories about resilience and building something from nothing, it delivers.
It’s not just about money.
It’s about conviction, timing, risk… and the kind of mindset that actually changes industries.

Rather than functioning as a technical manual, Freedom of Money offers a perspective-driven look at how money is being reshaped in the digital era. Changpeng Zhao (CZ) draws on his journey—from modest beginnings to building Binance—to explore themes of financial independence, decentralization, and trust.

What sets the book apart is its clarity. Instead of diving into complex technicalities, it focuses on mindset—how individuals should rethink money, ownership, and opportunity. This makes it approachable for beginners while still meaningful for experienced readers.

Crucially, the book also acts as a gateway to understanding the history and evolution of money. If you want to grasp where money comes from and where it’s heading, this is a must-read. It firmly earns its place among the fundamental books on both crypto and the broader history of money.

A strong message runs throughout: learning and understanding crypto is no longer optional—it’s becoming essential. The book encourages readers to take responsibility for their financial awareness and adapt to a rapidly changing system.

The tone is clearly optimistic, sometimes leaning more into vision than critique. It highlights the promise of decentralized finance more than its risks, so readers may benefit from exploring alternative perspectives alongside it.

In the end, Freedom of Money feels like more than just a book—it’s a call to rethink financial systems and personal responsibility in a new era.

Verdict: An accessible and thought-provoking read that stands among the core works on crypto and monetary history. A must-read for those who want to understand the foundations of modern finance—and why it’s increasingly important for everyone to engage with crypto and its implications for financial freedom.

What CZ didn’t say on X is all here. Definitely worth the wait.

I’ve been following CZ’s journey for years, helping educate crypto communities across the globe, so I’ll be honest: I started reading "Freedom of Money" expecting a polished corporate bio. I was wrong. It’s actually a very raw and grounded look at what went down.
What really hit home for me wasn't the talk about billions or market share, but how he describes the 2023 pressure cooker. For someone like me, who spent a lot of time explaining to people why resilience matters in this industry, the chapters on the DOJ settlement and his decision to step down are gold. It doesn’t read like it was written by a lawyer; you can actually feel the weight of him putting "users first" over his own ego.
A few takeaways from someone on the ground:
The book is fast-paced and skips the usual business jargon. CZ explains "financial freedom" not as a buzzword, but as a necessity for people who’ve been let down by traditional systems. It’s exactly the kind of perspective I need when I’m talking to students or community members who are skeptical about the future of the space.
I did wish he’d spent a bit more time on the crazy "Wild West" days of early 2017, but I get that the focus was on the bigger picture of resilience and transition.
The Verdict:
It’s a book with a lot of heart. If you’re an educator, a builder, or just curious about why we’re all so obsessed with decentralization, this is the historical record we needed.

A raw, insider look at Binance and beyond. Worth the read despite the flaws.

I read Freedom of Money by CZ these days during my trip to Taiwan. As someone interested in crypto, fintech, and the wild world of building a global exchange, I found it genuinely compelling even though writing isn’t CZ’s strongest skill. The book still delivers where it matters most.

The early sections on his life trajectory, the founding story, and Binance’s explosive takeoff are fascinating. You get a real sense of the speed, ambition, and chaos that built one of the biggest financial platforms in the world in record time. That’s the part I came for, and it doesn’t disappoint.

Where the book drags is the heavy focus on the U.S. lawsuit, conviction, and imprisonment. Maybe it accounts for 1/4 of the book. You can tell that he was really shaken by these and wants to have his version out. It takes up way more space than I expected, and honestly, even after reading all the details, it’s still not entirely clear why he ended with jail time and what was the crime 🤷‍♂️.

CZ closes the book with a Marcus Aurelius-style reflection on his philosophy of life that’s straight fire. Thoughtful, grounded, and surprisingly effective. He tells us: “this is who I am! Take it or leave it.”

Overall, if you’re into crypto origins, founder stories, or just want the unfiltered Binance saga from the man himself, this is a solid read. Not literary perfection, but authentic and insightful. Recommended.

——-
Additional note:

I’ve been a user of Binance for some years now, and while I was reading the book I recounted why I liked it quite a lot:
1. It was the first truly low latency trading platform that I used up to that point;
2. Customer Service is shit everywhere except on Binance. They really implemented the right system.
3. CZ unsophisticated communication style builds trust even if you don’t get to meet the guy.
These 3 points are discussed in the book and it was revealing to me to see how they reached that level.

What I liked most is how CZ explains complex ideas like decentralization in a very simple and relatable way. It made me rethink how traditional financial systems limit people without them even realizing it. The way he breaks down complicated financial concepts into everyday language makes the book accessible even for those who are new to crypto.

I read a little more

One powerful takeaway for me was the idea that true financial freedom is not just about making money, but about having full control over it without unnecessary restrictions or intermediaries. This perspective really changes how you see money and ownership in the digital age.

Additionally, I appreciated how the book highlights the importance of personal responsibility in finance. It encourages readers to educate themselves, think independently, and not rely entirely on centralized institutions.

However, I think some parts could include more real-life examples, especially for beginners who are just entering the crypto space. More practical scenarios would make it even easier to fully understand and apply the concepts discussed.

Overall, this book is a must-read for anyone interested in crypto, finance, or the future of money. It not only informs but also inspires readers to think differently about financial systems and their own financial independence.

*Freedom of Money* is far more than a story about crypto or business success.

What makes this memoir powerful is how human it feels.

Before reading this book, many people may know CZ only as the founder of Binance — the leader behind one of the world’s biggest crypto platforms. But in these pages, we meet something deeper: a person carrying immense responsibility, making impossible decisions, and facing consequences with remarkable composure.

What moved me most is that this book does not read like a victory story. It reads like a reflection on sacrifice, pressure, leadership, and personal conviction.

CZ’s journey shows that true leadership is not defined when everything is going well — it is revealed when everything is at risk.

His decision-making during the hardest moments, especially when freedom, reputation, and legacy were all on the line, offers lessons far beyond crypto. This is a book about resilience, integrity, and what it really costs to build something that changes the world.

Whether you are interested in entrepreneurship, leadership, or simply understanding the human side behind public headlines, this memoir is worth reading.

This is not just a book about money.

It is a book about the price of vision.

I went into Freedom of Money expecting a typical success story, but it turned out to be far more insightful than that.

What really stood out is the way the book approaches decision-making under pressure. Instead of presenting a perfect journey, it focuses on challenges, timing, and the mindset required to build something at a global scale.

The writing is clear and accessible, which makes it easy to follow, but at the same time it offers real value for anyone already involved in crypto or business. You can take away practical insights, not just ideas.

One of the strongest takeaways for me is the importance of adaptability. In fast-moving environments, the ability to stay focused and make decisions without overcomplicating things seems to be a key factor behind long-term success.

Overall, this is a genuinely insightful read for anyone interested in crypto, entrepreneurship, or how large-scale platforms are built. It stands out because it focuses on substance rather than hype.

A very good book, especially for those interested in crypto and building large-scale projects. I particularly appreciated the overarching vision of financial freedom, as well as the insights into mindset, decision-making and the ability to adapt in an uncertain environment. The book encourages readers to think beyond mere speculation and offers a genuine perspective on building something over the long term.

It also provides a better understanding of the logic behind the creation of Binance and the dynamics of growth in a constantly changing market, which is very enriching.

That said, I would have liked a little more depth on certain practical aspects, particularly on the ‘how to’ of applying these principles in practice. At times, the content remains fairly general and would have benefited from being illustrated with more detailed case studies.

Despite this, it remains an inspiring and useful read, which I recommend.

This CZ’s story is a reminder that overnight success takes a decade of high-stakes risk. Growing up in rural China to building a company that handles trillions in volume is an incredible arc, but the book shines in the quieter moments his reflections on leadership under extreme pressure.
The chapters on Protecting Users during market crashes like the FTX saga show a level of discipline that most founders lack. I appreciated the transparency regarding his legal battles; he treats them as expensive but necessary lessons for the industry to grow. 100% of proceeds going to charity is just the cherry on top. This is a story about building something bigger than yourself.

This is a must read Book😊

Whether you are a crypto veteran or someone just curious about blockchain, this book provides incredible insights into the challenges and triumphs of the industry. It’s an inspiring read that makes a strong case for why financial freedom matters now more than ever. Highly recommended for anyone looking to understand the evolution of the digital economy!

Freedom of Money is more than just a book, it’s a mindset shift.

Having been in crypto since 2017, I’ve seen the space evolve, but reading CZ’s perspective brings a whole new level of clarity. His journey, resilience, and way of thinking remind you that financial freedom isn’t just about money, it’s about how you see the world and the choices you make.

What makes this book even more powerful is the context in which it was written and its purpose beyond profit.

Inspiring, thought-provoking, and deeply human.

Definitely a must-read for anyone looking to understand money, and themselves, a little better.

Writing a book about freedom in 15-minute bursts on a restricted prison terminal is a profound paradox. Knowing every dollar goes to charity told me everything about the author's heart before I even read a single word.
This isn't just a book about finance; it’s a raw, emotional testament to human resilience and unbreakable discipline.
It proves that when the noise fades and things get tough, your core values remain.
The deepest takeaway for me? Keep it simple. And no matter the storms you face... keep building. Build aNd Build.

It takes tremendous effort to create anything that influential and meaningful at Binance. Starting from an ordinary background, and even before Binance, CZ should be considered as a successful business man, but I doubt that he could imagine the success of this scale.

Not everyone can be CZ, but you can definitely learn valuable principles from his journey of creating the biggest crypto exchange in the world. Integrity and putting users first are the foundation for the company success.

Great respect this man for what he did and looking to see Giggle Academy to blossom in the future

It gives a fast-paced look at a brand-new industry where the rules were being written as they went along. Freedom of Money is actually a really engaging memoir. It does a good job showing the pressure, fast pace, and uncertainty of building Binance at such a huge scale. The book includes enough behind-the-scenes insight into CZ's mindset, resilience, and decision-making to keep things interesting without getting overly technical. Even if you're not especially into crypto, it still works as a strong founder story about ambition, setbacks, and staying focused while everything around is changing.

CZ is out of touch and quite arrogant. He admits to writing this book in prison. It completely lacks scenes and dialogue is sparse. He did not care enough about the reader to edit. The beginning about his early years is passable, but almost no mention of his mother is strange. Further into the book he barely mentions his ex wife and children. He goes on to advise people to quit their jobs if they aren't building cathedrals. He advises us from his place in the manosphere where he can just ask a bro for $300k seed money. It is obvious he does not watch the news because then he might recognize the unemployment rates and understand the struggle to stay employed is real. He hypothesizes life is just a simulation. I could not finish this disorganized and self-indulgent work.
