Shadow King is the second book in the Shadow Men series. It can be read as a standalone, but readers of Shadow Prince will already know exactly why Felix planned this.

“I am Dis. Dismay. Disaster. Disgrace. Disfigure and Disembowel.” Each iteration drops like the threat it is. Each word is a promise of violence.

“You’re very cute, Disney,” I tell him.
“I am ancient and formidable,” he says.

and here he is, this ancient and formidable former Shadow King , trapped in a summoning circle, not able to break free, watching weeks worth of tv that he just discovered existed—from East Enders to The Great British Bake Off to Golden Girls. totally fascinated. it was hilarious. and cute.

actually this whole series so far is very cute. sprinkled with some tension, a small bit of angst and a few dangerous thrills.

Even if these stories are on the lighter and slower side i can’t wait for the other Shadow Beings and humans, that form such a great cast of characters, to get their stories.

Bonding with your "worst enemy" and the fiercest shadow king in all the realms by watching British Baking Off. While said shadow king critiques the contestants choices like it's actual war and accidentally reveals more than he originally intended, including his utter gentlemen-y-ness. While Felix slowly lowers his walls (to the shadow king and the most cheerful person in all of existence) and slowly becomes *shudder* wholesome.

These two had soooo much more in common than either of them were prepared for. So much dark baggage’s and heavy trauma. So much nemeses validation and safety. They found it together, all of the fluffy cuteness and home-ness. Falling in love so fast and seemingly so sudden that it knocked them off their feet (figuratively).

I canNOT wait for the next book. If anyone deserves at HEA, it's the cute little cult-survivor bunny. And it’s obsessed and utterly hopelessly in love at first sight shadow lord.

All of the issues I had with Book 1 completely evaporated here. The relationships are developed so much better, and everything feels more natural and earned. It isn’t exactly a slow burn, but it is a not-very-slow, kind-of-slow burn. Probably. Either way, it worked for me.

The relationships and side characters are developed so well. I absolutely love Bunny, and I cannot wait for Book 3. No, really—please hurry.

Felix feels much more developed and cohesive in this book, and I ended up loving him. Dis, however, was slightly less interesting to me than Hex. I think that comes down to each Shadowman having a distinct set of defining traits. Hex is suave and frightening, while Dis is honorable and reasonable. Those are great qualities, but they are probably harder to turn into a bold, instantly memorable personality. Dis was still interesting, lovable, and a great match for Felix.

My only real gripe was that I kept wondering when Felix was finally going to free Dis. It felt like a reasonable choice as early as 40% into the book, but it happened much later than I expected.

This book also felt like the beginning of several larger storylines. We are clearly going to learn more about Felix’s family, his magic, and the wider supernatural world. There were quite a few hanging threads, but they left me excited rather than frustrated.

Overall, this was a strong improvement over the first book, and now I am very impatiently waiting for Book 3.

What a delightful story this was.

‘I am Felix, small, terrifying goth witch, revenge-seeker, summoner of shadow kings.’

Felix summoned Dis the Shadow King. Felix did it for revenge, Dis wanted to kill him, burned down his property, and also wanted to kill Hex (book 1).
Felix made a circle and captured Dis in it.
Capturing the Shadow King was step one. Felix doesn’t have plans for the next steps.

Dis isn’t quite the horrible shadow Felix expected. On the contrary, he’s quite pleasant to be around.
Not that Felix would admit it. Like he wouldn’t admit that Dis is the most beautiful creature he has ever met. He’s weak for hot guys!
We get to know Felix better, his story is sad and explains his moody personality. He’s way more than he thinks he is. And Dis sees right through him.

Felix is also a coffee shop manager, and Brian/Bunny, his new employee, is the most positively sunny personality.

Without giving away too much of the story, I’ll just keep it at: I devoured this story, the characters were absolutely wonderful. The plot was quite genius! The writing was superb, I couldn’t get enough of this story! I already loved this author’s work, and this was another winner!

I LOVE the English (UK) writers and their tea as a solution to any problem!

I love this series so much. I love that it takes place in Bristol. I love that the characters work in a coffee shop. I love that they use tea for emotional support. I love how snarky they are. I love how funny these books are. Just, yes, yes, yes; give me more.

I was so looking forward to this after the teaser we got at the end of the last book. picked up this arc SO fast.

I love how funny Felix is, it was truly wonderful being inside of his head for this book. I really enjoyed his character growth and he and Dis are great together. Dis experiencing the human world was an obvious highlight and so adorable. The declarations at the end made me genuinely emotional.

I thought this book could have delved a little deeper into repairing some of the things that Dis did in the first book, which is why I haven’t rated it 5 stars. But I love S. Rodman and I’m incredibly excited for the couples in the next two books.

S. Rodman is an author who has no issues making you love a villain. They have a knack for loveable morally gray characters that I just can't get enough of. I mean, Dis tried not only to kill the previous book's MCs, but he also ordered the building Felix lived in to be set on fire! My opinion of him was not very high to say the least.

It was a lot of fun being in Felix's head. I knew he was a secret softy with how he acted with his bestie Adam. Felix was always doing little things that he knew would brighten the people he cared abouts day, but he wanted no acknowledgement of that fact. Felix past has led to some issues with abandonment and his prickly exterior is the result. But no one makes him pricklier than Dis. The shadowman who without ever having met him, turned him into collateral damage in his own war.

After trapping Dis is a summoning circle in his living room, Felix now has to figure out what the next part of his plan is. The ironic thing is he has no idea what to do with Dis now that he's bound. As the two spend more and more time in each others presence, they actually start to get to know one another. Dis may have been a total jerk, but he's an honorable one and he was only doing what he'd been taught to do his entire life. And when Dis asks Felix when the man plans to feed him, ohhhh boy does the fun start! Cause we all know how shadowmen "eat."

I loved how as the relationship progressed, both Felix and Dis seemed to start to let down some of their walls. It was gradual and felt really organic. Who would have thought a scabble game could make my heart hurt? And who would have thought a shadowman like Dis could be so incredibly caring when it comes to someone he has feelings for?

Though we see some old faces, or shadows so to speak, there are also a few new characters who show up. Both of these men will be getting a shadowman of their own according to the author and I am certainly excited for more!

I am loving this series! The first book, Shadow Prince, broke me out of a reading slump and this book was just as good was the first. There's humor, emotion, spice, danger, and found family. Felix really thought he had the upper hand trapping Dis in his summoning circle, but Dis was king for a reason and not even a summoning circle is going to tame him...unless he wants it too.

Rodman's wit is one of my favorite aspects of their writing. Dis discovering human television and reality shows was hilarious. The humor is balanced with deeply emotional scenes as Felix and Dis begin to build a connection.

I did feel like Felix let go of his anger for everything Dis did a little too easily. Likewise, I thought Adam was too quick to forgive Felix (and Hex for keeping Felix's secret). However, the explaination that Hex and Dis give for the enmity between them and why they are so easily able to move past it, did help a lot. But at the same time, it fits with their characters. Adam isn't one to stay angry; he cares too deeply. Felix, for as much as he would love to be a black cat, is secretly a marshmallow.

We get to check see almost all the characters from the first book (Hex was great as always) and learn more about Felix's background. The secondary plot with Wraith and the mysterious enemy controlling him was wrapped up somewhat suddenly and I didn't really feel like it was complete. We never find out how that was and the solution to "defeating" them seemed too easy, so I would have liked some more from that aspect. I do suspect we will get more in future books though.

I am so excited to read Dark's story and then Wraith's. I don't know how Rodman intends to redeem Felix's dad, but I am eager to find out. Dark is hilarious in his adorably confused way and Bunny is the sweetest. I'm definitely all in with this series to the end!

What a delightful second book in this very promising series!
Felix is a very emo and not sunshiney witch, and he is especially pissed because a demon king had his flat burned down… and almost him in the process. So what does our grumpy goth witch do? He traps the ex-demon king in a circle in his new flat above the coffee shop he manages. Why not? It’s revenge!!! But Dis (who Felix takes to calling ‘Disney’) is not what Felix expected, and he finds his revenge plans not going quite as planned.

This book is going to give you:
-human witch / shadow king
-dealing with rejection issues
-hilarious events and side characters paired with it
-a super emo mc that totally doesn’t want to mess up his emo image (but definitely does and it’s awesome)
-a regal shadow daddy that needs human energy to feed (yes, in a sexy way)

This book was really fun. Chapter one already had me laughing, and Felix was such a lovable MC. The characters were awesome, and really made it for me. I especially loved Brian/Bunny, and am so stoked for his book coming up next! He was also so funny. And Dis? He was both adorable and sexy, and so fun to have around.

In terms of plot, it’s more focused on the characters, which I enjoyed. This was more of a bridge in an overarching plot in the series, methinks.
My only gripe was that I wish that Dis wasn’t trapped in a circle for 95% of the story 😂😂 though it did have its charms.

Anyways, definitely pick up this series immediately! You’ll want to be ready for this one to come out when it drops!

I loved this book with emo witch Felix and the chaotic, irresistible disaster of summoning Dis. Felix wanted a confrontation and maybe even a little payback after Dis wrecked his home and upended his life, but what he got instead was a slow‑burn connection that neither of them expected. Watching their feelings develop, bit by bit, was incredibly satisfying, especially since admitting those emotions took time for both of them. I also adored Brian/Bunny, the new character who added charm, humour, and intrigue. I can’t wait to see what happens with him in the next book. This story was packed with danger, drama, emotions, and feelings, all wrapped up in a magical, messy, wonderfully intense dynamic between Felix and Dis. A fantastic instalment in the series. This was an MM story with mature content.

Aargh I loved this so much! Grumpy goth witch Felix and Shadowbeing - and former attempted assassin - Dis really dug their claws into me from page one (well from book one actually...this being book 2 in the series) and they did not let up. Shadowmen is such a cute series, set in a coffee shop in Bristol, and I'm so excited to see how it continues throughout the series. Since grown shadowmen feed off lust, you know there's some delicious sexual chemistry in it, but there's a generous dose of fade-to-black teases as well, which keeps the book firmly in the realm of adorable paranormal fluff, with just a smidgeon of angst because poor Felix has been badly burned by people in his past.

Rodman's writing style is totally unique, rather poetic in its flow and so toe-curlingly earnest and adorable, I just fall in love with every character, but the endless gentle humour ("I'm an emo. A goth. Guilt is for people who wear pastel colours and believe in the inherent goodness of humanity") stops it being twee. Shout out to Dark and Bunny for being the side characters who very nearly steal the show.

Shadow King is delightful. I was a little skeptical at first but quickly grew to embrace Felix (Little Witch) and Dis (Disney). The evolution of their relationship from enemies to lovers is appropriately paced and engaging, and both characters are immensely likable and easy to root for as a reader.

Felix begins as Dis’s captor, but he eventually finds solace in Dis once they both reveal past hurts and vulnerabilities to one another. These shared traumatic experiences help them find common ground and help grow a strong bond between them. Their love is made of stern stuff and reflects a relationship that will overcome future obstacles and miscommunications.

With their love story comes some intrigue. There are killers and usurpers in the shadows, and the mystery will likely continue in the next books. Speaking of the next book, I look forward to reading Bunny and Dark’s story. The intensity of their shared attraction is evident in this story, and I look forward to see the unfurling of their feelings in the next iteration.

Second in series (Shadowmen), best if read in order. Paranormal. Captor/captive. Forced proximity. Hurt/comfort. Found family. Slow burn. Single POV.

Revenge is all Felix has on his mind when he attempts to bind the shadow king. But once Felix has Dis he’s at a loss for what to do with him, and they slowly spend time together which becomes unexpectedly meaningful.

Felix’s need for revenge is understandable, and even though he is prepared, he doesn’t plan for what happens after he has Dis in his containment circle. I appreciated that Felix holds onto his anger and righteousness and that Dis recognizes the harm he had done to Felix. Their interactions are both adversarial and syrupy sweet at times, the slight power imbalance was not as noticeable with Dis not easily bending to Felix’s will. I enjoyed getting to know their backgrounds, but more the shared histories where they recognize a kindred spirit and hold each other close with an unexpected emotional depth. Strong found family vibes and future characters introduced, this series has been entertaining so far. 4.5 rounded up

I read this without reading the first book first - it probably would have been a good idea, but still, it was a 5-star read for me anyhow.This series deals with the shadow men from the Shadow Realm who are all getting their HEAs with the humans they are attracted to. Hex & Adam got their HEA in the first book, this time it's Felix and Dis' turn. Hex & Adam show up quite a bit in this book - part of the found family.

Felix the witch traps Dis the shadow man for revenge - keeping him in a force field/circle inside his apartment above the coffee shop. This is revenge for something he did in book 1. Over time, they become attracted to each other - the reasons why Dis did what he did become more clear and understandable. There's a confrontation with Fiend towards the end of the book.

I loved the way these 2 interacted with each other. Medium spice, found family, a little bit dark. Really enjoyed this and will be along for the ride for the rest of the series.

This is a fantastic second book in the series that combines more of the action of the shadow realm with characters I fell in love with. Dis is a brilliant character for so many reasons; he's interesting, funny without meaning to be, loyal and brings out the best in Felix. I really liked Felix's sarcastic, grumpy inner commentary for the novel and getting to see how Dis and the other characters changed his perception of how he 'fit' in the group. I marked it down a star because some conversations felt slightly repetitive but I really enjoyed the ending to the story - the subtle competition of the bigger house, the joy of Brian aka Bunny and his chemistry with dark, the HEA for this pair. I'm excited for Dark's book next but I honestly can't wait for Wraith's book after that having read the teaser blurb at the end!! Overall, it's a great paranormal mm romance that I'd definitely recommend.

Revenge is permitted in the shadow realm.
I think that somehow explains everything, and in a way, it also heals. When you allow yourself to seek revenge for the wrongs that have been done to you, you set out on a path that must follow a certain pattern. Right? That’s how I picture it. You shouldn’t care what happens to the person who hurt you so badly—the one whose idea it was to use you as a means to an end.
And yet it’s not easy to walk this path. Not if you’re empathetic enough to understand that someone who was groomed to be a weapon had no other choice. Only when you strip everything away and boil it down to the essence of what it once was—and deep down still is—does healing begin.

I think the greatest “revenge” was actually his, because Dis had to feel it—he had to sense what’s inside him—and—spoiler alert—I think he’ll keep trying to make amends until the end of time.
Loved it. And might have cried a little.
So… Wrath? Oh, I neeeeeeeeed to read this story.

I love the way Rodman writes these books with the perfect balance of emotions and comedy! Felix sets out to get revenge for things done in the first book, so trapping the jerk of a shadow king is what he does, only Felix is such a marshmallow on the inside he doesn't quite have it in him to go past trapping Dis. Their relationship blooms from being in close contact and it's both hilarious and heartwarming!

We also get introduced to one of the best side characters, Brian/ Bunny! Perpetually happy Bunny! I adored him! He was such a light in this book and honestly I can't wait for Bunny and Darks book next! Bunny is going to run circles around that shadow man!

A lighter read than I thought it was going to be considering what led to the summoning and how Felix felt about it.

It was funny and had more of a slice of life vibe going on as the captive situation wasn't really made a big deal of and there wasn't much friction between them as captive and captor. It felt more like they were roommates, where one just didn't get to leave, but still had all the comforts he wanted. It felt like (and was basically said) it was a vacation for Dis.

So yeah, wasn't really what I thought I was going to read, so I was a bit disappointed. Otherwise a good book (probably even great) for those who don't have specific expectations.

Random thought - I think Brian is THE MOST sunshiny character I've ever read about and that was refreshing.

Different flavor than the 1st book, but still very good

This book is a bit darker than the 1st. The primary MC has depressive and posttraumatic symptoms shown in a realistic and sometimes overwhelming way. Be mindful of your own triggers. I admit it was hard to read at the beginning.

But the darkness makes the development of the relationship between the primary MC and the former shadow king all the more sweet and meaningful. It is a relationship based on a shared knowledge of the impact of trauma and the harsh realities of living.

As in his past books, Rodman shows the usual amount of wit, sarcasm, and great humor. The spice is stellar! The story dynamic! Not your stereotypical happy-go-lucky romance but still has HAE that is satisfying and seems real.

I would highly recommend reading this book and everything else written by S. Rodman!

You were forged in the brightest of stars.

Felix and Dis are tooth achingly sweet. Felix is funnier than expected. I was often reminded of Daria level quips and sarcasm. Despite his cranky and annoyed exterior Felix is sad and hurt, but so caring.

I was pleasantly surprised by Dis, is was not what I was expecting. I wished Felix would have given Dis a little more detail into the damage he caused him, enacted more 'revenge' by making Dis experience more things that he took from Felix. I really wanted Dis to experience the music Felix loved but lost in the fire. A little more meat here and I'd be at a 5 star review.

Bunny stole the show, I can't wait to learn more about his past!

Felix, a goth witch, had more than enough awful things happen to him to make his reactions to others perfectly understandable. Dis, one of the Shadow Men, was responsible for Felix losing his previous flat and all his possessions. Felix is determined to get revenge and captures Dis in a magic circle in his living room. Of course this becomes very complicated in no time. I loved the snark and Dis's reactions to daytime television. While I didn't have the chance to read the first book, the explanations were enough to make it work fine as a standalone. I hope to read more of this series.

Shadow King is the second book in the Shadowmen series. In my opinion this series is best read in order. This is the story of Felix a witch and Dis the shadow king. S. Rodman is an amazing author, who knows how to bring a story to life. I loved these two and watching them work through their issues to build a relationship. I loved the humor that runs through the story. I couldn't put this book down once I started it. I loved learning more about Felix and Dis's pasts. I loved the found family aspects of the story. I can't wait for the next book in the series. I would definitely recommend this book and series as 5 star reads.

Enemies to Lovers, Hurt Comfort, Forced Proximity, Massive Age Gap. I'm loving being back with the Shadowmen. Felix is such a precious little goth with abandonment issues determined to get revenge. Dis is, well Dis to be honest, but his critique of Bake Off and how he looked after Felix were so cute (he'd hate that I said that).

The underlying theme of loss, loneliness and betrayal should make this a really dark book, but the theme doesn't really translate that well as this was ridiculous and chaotic. I laughed so hard my ribs hurt, whilst wanting to cry at the sadness of it all. This is a dichotomy that shouldn't really work, but it does and I absolutely loved it.

Ahhh this book was as good as the first - maybe better. Clever and absolutely wonderful. I measure how good a book is by how much I hiss when someone tries to talk to me when I’m reading. I was hissin like a basket of snakes!

Hard to list out highlights when I loved every single thing. Super squishy romance that still kept its edge. Black cat/black cat dynamic. Really cool descriptions of magic. Good boundaries (except for Adam, ha!). Hilarity and sadness and exciting fight scenes. British bake-off and the introduction of Bunny.

I can’t wait for Bunny’s book and am so excited there are more books to come! I’m verrry curious about the book after that >_>

I liked this book even more than I was expecting to. I really enjoyed the development and solidification of the main characters’ friendships alongside the main love story. Both the MCs learn that they’re more loved than they know, and it was a really sweet book. The only thing I would change would be to expand on Dis’s backstory a little bit, I felt like that part wasn’t really explained in a lot of depth, and I would have loved to get that extra context.

After reading book one, I was so excited for book 2 and it didn't disappoint. I loved Felix and Dis. The progression of their relationship felt organic and not too rushed. It was nice to see Adam and Hex again and I can't wait to see what's to come for Brian the sweetheart. It would have been a 5 star but the almost non con of the grindr date in chapter 8 made me uncomfortable and I had to put the book down for a bit. So that knocked it down a star for me. The rest of the book was great.

I'd been looking forward to this one, and it was definitely worth the wait!

Felix is out for revenge against Dis for trying to kill him and burning down his flat (happens in Shadow Prince), and manages to trap him in a summoning circle. Against his better judgement, a friendship starts to blossom between them.

We get to meet Brian - aka Bunny - who's all adorable and sunshiney. And someone from Felix's past shows up unexpectedly.

There's snark, some danger, and a whole lot of Great British Bake Off. And of course, an HEA.

In the second book of this series, Felix binds Dis, the former Shadow King to his living room to get revenge for Dis destroying his apartment and possessions. But he forgot he has to feed Dis with his energy of a carnal nature. Their proximity and honesty brings about another binding of concern, companionship and love. As danger approaches, all must work together to prevent unaliving. I loved Dis's addiction to daytime tv and especially enjoyed the Bunny/Dark obsession and can't wait for their book. I received a copy of this through BookSirens and this is my voluntary opinion.

I received in advance review copy for free and I'm very glad I did. I had a lot of fun reading the book. Main characters are Felix, a witch with a lot of emotional baggage, and Dis, and exiled former Shadow Prince. Felix doesn't quite know what he wants, so he focuses on revenge. But, this being a romance novel, he finds something else. I like the character of Felix a lot, but I feel like Dis could have been a bit more flushed out. I can't quite manage to understand his motivations or character. Still, it was funny, enjoyable and relaxing, as is the norm with this author. Also a happy ending.

Human witch, shadow king, revenge, captor/captive, enemies to lovers, forced proximity, hurt/comfort

Felix is out for revenge for his flat burning down so he binds Dis to him, only that plan isn't quite working out as he had planned.
He instead finds himself insanely attracted to Dis and it becomes a big problem.
I loved Felix's sassy, snarky additude and Dis learning about the human world with wide eyed wonder was absolutely adorable.
The hilarious hijinks had me laughing out loud throughout and I can't wait for Brian/Hubby's story.

After the events of the first book, where Dis burned down Felix's apartment and took everything from him, Felix is consumed by thoughts of revenge. He spends months creating a spell to summon the ruthless Shadow King and keep him prisoner. Of course, things don't go quite as either of them expects.
For someone as feared and merciless as Dis, it was hilarious to discover his love of cooking competitions and drama shows.
Brian is absolutely adorable, and after meeting him here, I cannot wait to read his story with Dark.
