This book was great!!
It immediately intrigued me and I finished it in just under a day. Super keen on the spicy Romantasy genre and the possessiveness of the MMC.
The plot, dialogue and spice all worked so well together. Loved it! Excited for Book 2.

ARC Review | Spoiler Alert ⤵️
This book had a mix of really strong moments along with some frustrating ones.
Let me start by mentioning that “Pain cannot heal pain” was easily one of the strongest quotes/moments in the book that really sums up what the whole book is about from my perspective.
On the positive side, the writing itself stands out right away. The vocabulary is strong from the beginning, and the descriptions of different locations are incredibly detailed—I could picture everything so clearly. The world feels vivid, which definitely kept me engaged.
The characters have some compelling elements too. I really liked the dynamic of the core girls’ friendship; it has a very rom-com feel that adds some lightness to the story. Kade’s (MMC) past is another strong point—the mystery surrounding him is interesting, and I liked how slowly that was revealed. His resistance to the mating bond adds to that tension, and the slow burn there actually works really well. I adored how long it took him to warm up to Alanna (FMC) —it builds tension in a satisfying way.
All that said, there are quite a few weaker points.
Some of the tropes feel overused, and at times the story leans heavily into cliché. The whole “how can I have powers, I’m just a weak human” arc feels predictable, and the pacing around it doesn’t help. Alanna as a character is also hit or miss. Her repeated “I’m a burden, everyone hates me” mindset can get frustrating and makes her harder to like at times.
There are also plot moments that feel inserted for convenience, like the random call from her dad during Alanna’s “kidnapping”—it pulls you out of the story a bit.
Overall, the book has strong atmosphere, interesting character dynamics, and a genuinely engaging slow burn, but it’s weighed down by predictable tropes, some forced dialogue, and uneven character development. Still, if you enjoy fantasy with tension, romance, and lots of drama, it’s an entertaining read.

This is what my body has been craving, what it's been screaming for in my dreams. This is the pull I've felt since the moment I first saw him in the library, a dangerous, magnetic force I didn't understand until now. It's more that desire, it's a profound sense of rightness, two halves of a whole finally crashing together.

This was such a wonderful debut shifter romance by Daphne Underhill! There was just enough of a fantastical element with the magical lore surrounding the echo-beasts to keep me reading, while the tension between Kade and Alanna only escalated. My heart hurt for everything that made Kade into the brooding hero we love to swoon over. I loved Alanna's determination and grit, and together they made a formidable couple who managed to balance each other beautifully. I always love a dominating shifter who finally unleashes his ferocity in order to claim his mate, and Kade was such a possessive and devoted mate once he finally accepted the bond. I'm happy I took a chance on this new author and look forward to more books🖤
Tropes: fated mates, hate-to-love-you, jaded but obsessed hero, scholarly heroine-in-danger, forced proximity, touch her and die, hurt/comfort, loner hero who's stuck in the past, heroine who's just trying to stay alive, grumpy/sunshine, 'you deserve better than me' vibes, found family, STEAMY🔥

This is such an interesting take on a Shifter Romance! The premise of Alana being a librarian that opened the wrong book and suddenly found herself with powers, a big moody man and a killer shadow… so unique!
I have to admit that the first part of the book take me a little bit longer to get into it because I was understanding barely anything haha but luckily our main character is a clever, stubborn, curious librarian who is researching like her life depends on it and tbh it is haha so we slowly become more aware of what’s this alternative paranormal world is about.
I really liked Alana, she’s so brave, determined and committed, she just didn’t lay down and wait to be saved, she was hell bent on learning what all of this means and how to survive it!
With Kade I resisted him a little bit more haha, he was so grumpy and moody, and listen I know he has good reasons and he was trying to do the right thing but my girl didn’t have to take the fault on that… I was like treat her right she’s your mate for god’s sake! Haha but I understand him and his reasons and hey, he literally just wanted to keep her alive, at the end he learned his lesson and spoiled her!
This is a very slow burn, I was losing my mind I little bit but it’s just because the chemistry and tension between them was so goood, definitely worth the wait!

I received an advance copy of this book from the author. This review reflects my honest opinion.
This is a solid paranormal romance with lycans, magic, and fated mates, and it leans more toward plot than spice.
For me personally, it wasn’t a 100% match. The second half of the book captured my attention much more than the first. The beginning felt quite slow, and I struggled a bit to stay fully engaged. It’s definitely a slow burn — but for me, it leaned more toward a slow slow burn, and I was close to quitting it a couple of times.
That said, I really liked the characters. Alanna and Kade complement each other well, and I especially enjoyed how she challenges him. Their dynamic has a lot of potential and adds a nice layer to the story.
When it comes to the romance, I found myself wanting a bit more. There is some spice, but it comes relatively late in the book and feels more moderate in level. Personally, I would have preferred it to develop earlier and be a bit more present throughout the story.
Overall, this is a well-written paranormal romance with a strong plot and interesting characters, but I personally would have liked a faster buildup and more consistent romantic development.
Its a 3,5 stars for me, but only because it not a personal match

I will start out by saying that I was given an ARC copy to read and am giving my own opinion.
This book is absolutely amazing and I loved reading it! The Librarian and the Lycan is the first in the series (if I remember correctly), and I cannot wait until the next book comes out because I enjoyed this one that much!
Alanna (the FMC) and Kade (the MMC) are both fantastic characters and so well suited for each other. Kade is your typical emotionally constipated, wolf shifter MMC but he takes such good care of Alanna! He is so sweet and endearing, but he has no idea what he is doing and it’s absolutely adorable. Poor guy is just doing the best he can while Alanna just keeps pushing him for more information.
Alanna is probably my favorite character, with her need to know everything and to search for it in books. I wish I had her power (you’ll find out what it is if you read the book)!
I absolutely loved this book and would absolutely recommend it, especially if you love paranormal romances, beauty and the beast vibes, libraries, wolf shifters, grumpy MMCs, and magic!
Thank you so much to Daphne Underhill and her team for letting me read the book! I loved it and appreciate the opportunity!

I finished The Librarian and the Lycan in one day and I couldn’t put it down! I’m excited to see what happens next in this world, even though that seems forever away.
As a librarian, I found The Librarian and the Lycan to be an amazing book! Daphne really captured how it might be to be in the brain of a librarian. Obviously all of our profession isn’t the same, but there are quirks that we all have, such as using big words just because we can. Alanna is such a quirky character and I’m glad that throughout the book she grows and keeps what makes her unique. Mr. Grumpy Kade is also a well thought out character, getting his inner dialog is a great contrast to Alanna’s and their chemistry really worked.
This story had my emotions tangled up with the characters and what they were going through which is truly what I want in a novel. To be invested! And let’s not forget about the spice, it was perfect. They don’t immediately jump each other and I appreciate that, but we still get great spicy scenes throughout. It’s the perfect mixture of spice, romance, and plot. I can’t wait for the sequel!

Okay this was so much fun. It starts off feeling very grounded in the human world—quiet library setting, normal life vibes—and then everything flips the second she touches that book. The magic element coming out of nowhere and attaching itself to her was such a cool twist, especially because she has no idea what’s happening at first.
I really liked that she didn’t know he was a shifter for most of the book. It made their dynamic way more interesting—there’s tension, confusion, and just enough suspicion without it feeling dragged out. And meanwhile, there’s literally a beast hunting her?? The stakes felt real without losing that slightly cozy, small-town/library feel.
The lycan MMC is exactly what you want—protective, a little intense, but not over the top. Once everything starts connecting (the magic, the bond, what’s actually chasing her), it all clicks in a really satisfying way.
Honestly, the mix of “normal world suddenly not normal,” hidden identity, and that creeping danger worked so well for me. I was hooked.
And that ending?? I need more. If this turns into a series, I’m 100% in.

Stubborn Librarian. Idiot Lycan.
Imagine working at a library, just doing your job when all of the sudden you’re thrust into a world of magic and danger without warning. That’s what happened to Alanna.
Her story was amazing and funny and thought-provoking (because she herself asked a lot of questions and required more data points - iykyk). I loved Kade as well. He was very well-controlled even when he didn’t want to be. He was more controlled than I ever could be in his situation...that’s for sure.
I’m so happy for the ending and can’t wait for more. As someone who loves libraries and books, Alanna's job would be like a dream come true for me! I'm so jealous of her!

Alanna is girl who knows what she wants, but has a history of being told she is too much. She much enjoys her job as a librarian...and she stumbles upon some ancient artifacts. This discovery also leads her to cross paths with Kade, a surly guardian of said ancient artifacts.
Well, Alanna has created some distrubances with her findings, in the magic world and in Kade's life. He fights his internal want for her, and she just feels constantly rejected.
But there is a sloght grovel moment, and it made the ending just a bit sweeter.
This is almost a cozy romance lol there is a little drama and action, due to magical disturbances, and a few spicy scenes. I feel like I had trouble following along with the scripture the was used for Alanna's understanding of the shard, but overall I got the gist.

My review of this ARC is an honest and unbiased one.
I went into to reading this book with several expectations, the primary one was an expection of spice. I'm so not disappointed that that wasn't immediately the case as the push and pull between Alanna and Kade was so much better. It allowed the plot to unfold and build, it helped me understand the characters background and how that motivated certain actions and thought processes.
The book was well written, the plot was fleshed out without over complicating it. It really did feel like I was included in their journey and was a part of their own personal discoveries. I'm looking forward to reading the next book Daphne Underhill releases.

I was torn by this book, on one hand I really enjoyed it, on the other I found it dragged. The second half of the book was better than the first half.
Alanna, a regular librarian opens a rare book collection, finds a crystal and everything changes. There is something dark and scary around but all of a sudden, she has a mysterious protector, Kade, tall, dark, handsome and brooding.
The book covers Alanna learning about her new found magical powers and Kade fighting his mating instincts.
There is some action, humour and a fair amount of spice.
I loved the actual storyline but the writing wasn’t perfect for me.
I will read other books by this author though; there is a lot of promise showing.

This book had a concept that felt completely up my street, and there were so many moments where I thought, yes, this is exactly what I wanted. But I kept wishing the story had a bit more room to breathe. The characters’ past traumas were mentioned but not explored with the depth that would’ve made their present‑day choices hit harder, so some emotional beats ended up feeling a little rushed.
It’s definitely a slow burn, but for me it drifted into too slow at times. I found myself craving more actual conversations between the characters instead of so much inner monologue. Their banter was one of my favourite parts of the book, and I would’ve loved to see that dynamic shine more often.

This book was such an interesting take on shifter romances. I loved Alanna and Kade's story! Alanna, a librarian who has been repeatedly made to feel like she was "too much," and Kade, a guilt-ridden shifter who immediately thinks "MINE" when he meets Alanna. It was wonderful! I haven't read anything by Daphne Underhill before, so I wasn't sure what to expect. The story quickly drew me in and kept me hooked until the very last word. I love how strong both characters are and they complement each other so very well. I am pleased to give this book 5 stars and tell everyone that this is a MUST READ!!!

Recieved this as an arc from the author but leaving my honest review.
This was a great paramormal shifter romance. I loved the storyline and thought the premise was unique and had so much potential. The only slight issue i would say would be the slow burn of it all. While I love a slow burn it did tend to be a bit too slow in places for me, but obviously this is a trope a lot of readers would eat up! Aside from this, I wouldve loved more banter between the mcs as i loved what was already present!
Would definitely recommend for fans of paranormal, shifter romances that arent exactly like all the others for a bit of a change!

I am a huge fan of shifter books and fated mates. This book is one of the best that I have read! Alanna and Kade have so many obstacles in their way, but I was rooting for them the entire time. The danger that they face in this book is unlike any other one in a wolf shifter book. Alanna's journey to accept and control her newfound magic is truly a lesson we should all embrace - if at first you don't succeed, never give up. Alanna is the perfect person to help Kade overcome his past. I am totally invested in their story, so I am anxiously awaiting the next story in this series!

A great read! The main character, Alanna, is strong, very smart, and good person to have on your side in a tight spot. Thrust into the world of magic, protected by a grumpy, mysterious tank of a male, Alanna was very fun to get to know. The author was very skilled in making Alanna three dimensional, with vulnerability, some past trauma, and this made her so relatable.
The journey of Alanna becoming powerful and the romance made this high on my list of favorite books. I can’t wait for Daphne Underhill’s next book!

This is an ARC honest review. I had a difficult time with this book in the beginning and trying to really get into it. It is most definitely a slow burner, not fast. This is borderline enemies to lovers, or at least strangers forced proximity but neither of them admit their attraction to the other until halfway through the story. Be prepared for that going in.
My mind kept wanting to make sense of things early, try to put the pieces of information that was sprinkled together before we got there. I'm not sure if that is just me or not.
Spice: 3/5
Story: 4/5

You know a book is good when you find yourself actually frustrated with a character. If I could have reached through the page, grabbed Kade by the collar, and shaken him... I absolutely would have. Because, what do you mean? JUST TELL HER!!
This book had everything you could want. Will they wont they? Tension that keeps you guessing. Spicey steamy scenes. Intelligent inquiries. Relatable relationships and struggles.
The scenes with the echo-beast were definitely my favorite. We totally got a bad a** FMC at the Aurora Festival.
I cant wait to read more!

When the slow burn, is actually a slow burn, I'm hooked!
Alanna is basically living every bookish girl's dream, a librarian, meets a wolf-shifter, gains cool powers because she opens the wrong (but also right) book, and discovers so many mysteries!
This had emotional depth from both Kade and Alanna, and I really enjoyed the dual POV which added layers to the plot! The adventure, mystery and research had richness without feeling overly complicated.
I can't wait to read the next one!

This book as a great storyline/ premise. While I struggled through the first half of this book (I’m not quite sure why) the story kept me captivated till the end and I had to just know what would happen and how things would end. This book would have easily been an 4 star read for me if I hadn’t have struggled in the beginning.
I received this book as an ARC from the author (thank you) any my opinions are mine and mine alone.

Such an entertaining read! I was enthralled from the beginning. The type of slow burn that makes you squeal and gasp. This was my first toe step into fated mates and really enjoyed the trope. I was rooting for Kade and Alanna the whole time and never felt like it was forced or unrealistic that they would work out.
Can't put it down + delightful banter + entertained the whole time = and easy 5 stars from me!

This was such a fun read! I truly enjoy shifter romance books and the plot in here stole the show. It had me hooked from the first chapter and I found it hard to put down. The building up of the plot was perfect— not to fast, not to slow. The spice was spicy and the characters are a work of art. This is a great book for those who enjoy shifter romance, secret world, anomalies, and of course— HEA’s. I cannot wait to read book two!
Please keep in mind this book ends on a cliffhanger.

Oh I squealed with delight multiple times reading this book.
Alanna is a librarian who seeks order and control, loves her friends, and her quiet life. But by opening a book in a special collection, she gets thrust into a fantastic storyline full of monsters and hidden powers. The only one who might be able to help her navigate these unlocked mysteries is Kade, a brooding shape shifter who seems to despise her...
The perfect escapism / beach read / spicy joy. Highly recommend!

What's not to love? A Librarian who uncovers an artifact that gives her magic and a Lycan who happens to be her fated mate fighting to keep her safe from the shadow monster stalking her in order to get access to her newly acquired magic in addition to him fighting the pull of the mate bond. This book was short and sweet, and it really turned up the heat. Enjoyable story that has all the elements of a fated mate story: magic, witty banter, protective MMC, danger, mate bond and spice.

I received an Arc copy of this book from the author. If you love shifter romances with a twist then this is the book for you. The storyline is unique with different aspects of magic and a secret society that monitors disturbances. It’s a slow burn with true mates who keep fighting the pull and the banter between the FMC and MC was so good. I really enjoyed this story and I can’t wait to read book 2.

This book has a great back and forth between the main characters, and having that slow burn between them was something that had me hooked! The writing was well done, the descriptions allowing me to have that “movie playing” vibe in my mind as I read it that I absolutely loved.
I really enjoyed this book, if you love Romantasy, give them one a try!

She brings order to dusty tomes.
He is part of a secret order of protectors.
When they're thrust together they have to figure out how to save the world.
This is raw, honest, intense. It explores familial relationships, new beginnings, feelings of possessiveness and love. I cried a couple times, and laughed many more!
Enjoy your trip into the start of this series!!

A slowburn for all of us who loved books and libraries (Beauty and the Beast, The Mummy, Never Ending Story...). Alanna is a smart FMC: she's rational, neurodivergent, a proper librarian. Until a certain book crosses her desk and the rules of the world change right in front of her eyes. And along comes a shifter (hot af) MMC that's gonna push all her buttons (in the best of ways).
