Series: THE BIRMINGHAM REBELS BROTHERS IN ARMS THE SAINT'S DEVILS THE 93RD HIGHLANDERS MERCURY RISING
Hamish by the eloquent, Samantha Kane, is a compelling read that once I started, I could not put down. It is a love story pure and simple. A story of people in need of a connection that goes deeper than what one sees on the surface. Samantha Kane has earned a spot on my auto read list. I love her writing and her stories call to me!
I read this book as part of anthology that is no longer available for purchase, Wanton Christmas Wishes, in December of 2014. EVERYTHING I have read by Samantha Kane has blown me away! The depth of feeling she manages to convey with mere word on a paper is like no other! You WILL fell for her characters. She WILL draw you in. You WILL love her books! I promise! Now for my review :) I can't say this loud enough ... I LOVE EDITH! But oh I also love me some Ham and Finn! GAWD, I ached for Ham! But Edith just fixes everything ;) The story ended way too soon for me, but not because it was lacking, but because I NEEDED to continue to read about their lives and paths. I just didn't want it to end :( I really wanted to read their story through 'Christmas' but :( it wasn't written that way and I was sad BUT it did have me running to put the CONALL (book 2) on my TBR!
I re-read this in 2024 as book 3 in this series is coming out in June - wow! After 10 years I'd lost hope but hey, I'll take a surprise like that any day!
Samantha Kane is an incredibly gifted writer especially when it comes to MMF. Where other "poly" stories often leave me frustrated by one of the three players (usually the woman lol... ) I've never had that happen with any of Kane's stories and that remains true here.
Sadly, this is one of those books that leaves you saying NOOOOOOOO when you realize it's rather abortively short. I still think it's worth the read... but I love this trio, and I dearly wish they had been given more than a short story. They deserve to have their romance developed fully and to not be rushed through the really tender and balanced intimacy Kane is so good at crafting.
So if you're new to Samatha Kane I'd recommend starting elsewhere, even if it's book 2 in this series, and then doubling back with this one as a sort of "bonus" that will fill you in on this particular trio.
And yet another example of why I should never re-read book I've previously loved...
This one definitely suffered for it's length (or lack thereof) because we don't get to see the romance blossom between any of the characters. We're just told about the events in such ways that I find them all seriously lacking in emotional content; there's no depth to the feeling these three are supposed to share, no true context. In fact, I hate to say it, but I feel like this is just some MMF PWP with a really interesting, yet completely untold, backstory.
I'm kind of heart-broken over it because I know that SK can do it - she's blown me away with all of the detail, the history, in most of the Brothers in Arms series, where there are almost a dozen tales in which we get to see flashbacks and/or experience the current relationship(s) as it blossoms.
*Sigh*
I think I need to reconsider my choice to refresh my memory by re-reading and NOT simply rating books I've previously read.
This is really short but kept me engaged the whole time. They didn't really get to a HEA but a HFN and the erotic was just starting but since it is only 49 pages, you cannot expect that. I did feel that they would try to keep it going and get more as the time before he leaves comes. Since I already have read Connal, which is longer, I know we get to see Hamish and learn more about he future there. 4 1/2 for a short romantic erotica with feeling.
What a great story! This is the first book in the new 93rd Highlanders series but can be read as a standalone. If you have read and love Samantha's Brothers in Arms books you won't want to miss the start of this new series. The story has the same heat and M/M/F romance as the BIA stories but in a whole new setting.
Hamish Fletcher is injured and sent to the hospital. There he meets his childhood friend, Phin. These two had feelings for each other as boys that they didn't really understand. In addition, Phin has now met and fallen in love with Edith. How the three of them sort things out and find their HEA is an engaging and entertaining story.
Also, don't miss the next book in the 93rd series - CONALL - another fantastic book by Samantha Kane.
I read Hamish as part of Wanton Christmas Wishes which I purchased. I was not compensated in any way for my review; I just happen to love Samantha Kane's books!!

MMF Samantha Kane writes 19th century hot men and sexually liberated women amidst the struggles and sadness of European wars. The men are soldiers or physicians and the women are nurses or camp followers. The formula is almost always that the two men want each other and the woman, too. Extremely hot. 🔥
Quick novella with lots of spice. Not much dialogue (More narration of time passing), but it's nice when it all comes together in the end. A good setup for the rest of the series
I really enjoyed the "Brothers In Arms" series and this one seems to be more of the same. Good start even tho too short. Second book is much longer and I'm hoping just as good if not better.
