This is the third and final installment to the True Calling series by Siobhan Davis. I was very kindly given all three books as arcs to read and review. You can see my other reviews for the first two below
True Calling
Beyond Reach

First off, these covers are amazing! They are SO beautiful!

Spoiler Alert!

Siobhan Davis writes this amazing dystopian novel with just a little bit of everything you want, action, love, friendships, and sadly loss. She does this perfectly in this page-turner series. I found myself up rather late at night just wanting to get a couple more pages in until my eyes were literally falling out of my head, or I would be thinking about what happened or what was going to happen when I should have been studying for class.

This book picks up right where we left off on the second one with the unknowns of what is happening on Novo and on earth, who to trust and just who is Ariana going to pick? A major point in the books is the love triangle between Ari, Cal, and Zane. I, by the way, am team Zane all the way. But not only are we dealing with a love triangle with so much history, Ari is pregnant as well - with Cal's baby or....?

Sometimes I felt like America Singer from The Selection and Ariana were the same in the way they just couldn't make up their mind on who they wanted. It was such an emotional rollercoaster, one minute I was happy with what was happening and the next I was trying to figure out whyyy, why Ari, WHY. I sadly didn't get what I wanted for the future of Zariana, but that is ok.

There were so many gasp-worthy parts in the book and it really came down to not being able to trust anyone because of what happened first on Novo, then with Clementia, and so many secrets coming to the surface, you never really knew who to trust.

I did enjoy that there was a *four years later* part at the end of the book to completely wrap things up, I just wish that Ari had picked the other guy instead :( This in turn made a little upset with the ending although it was a great ending just not the people I wanted together haha.

WARNING! WARNING! This book contains a double, multi-generational love triangle. This is not for the squeamish reader. Recommended for those who enjoy a high level of personal drama and angst interspersed in their science fiction.

Rating:4.5/5 stars. I really enjoyed this third book and thought it ended the series well. However, Beyond Reach is still my favorite.

Let's start with the parents and their triangle. This reminded me of the story of Jacob and Leah and Rachel from the bible. Nate treated his wife's children shabbily, but Deacon, the son Ari's mom bore him, he loved. Thankfully, Nate did not give Deacon a coat of many colors, and Cal, Mel and Jaden didn't throw him into a well. I do think Cal feeling unloved as a child gave him the compassion necessary to

Now to the Triangle with a capital T. I had issues with all three Triangle members. Let's start with Zane.

Once again, Siobhan Davis’s easy-going writing style, ability to bring characters to life and brilliant plotting techniques that had me hooked from word one are leaving me ALMOST speechless. Destiny Rising is one more showcase for Ms. Davis’s magnetic writing style in a world balancing precariously on an upcoming decisive moment in time. The government is feeling the pinch of the revolutionaries trying to free both Novo and Earth from the self-serving clutches of those in power. The time is now to take a stand and Ariana, Cal and Zane are backing freedom for the masses. But, every choice has a consequence and the consequences of the choices Ariana has made will be far-reaching and painful for all. Her powers are growing exponentially, her emotions running wide open and the path her life will take is still a mystery. Two boys, one a pillar of strength from the past, one a raging flame from the present, there is a rigid triangle that may end badly for all. Is there a way for Ariana to let one down and grasp onto her future with the other? Her heart knows what she wants, but her brain must deliver the blow, all while the fog of the future still clings all around. Who will Adriana choose or will she choose to save them both by sacrificing herself and another who has no voice to choose?

Holy tumbling triangles, Siobhan Davis has dodged the over angsty bullet and pulled off this three-sided love affair, no easy task for any author, yet, she never missed a step, a beat or hung on too long in one place, after all, there is a war going on and the stakes are much bigger than three hearts. Using three POVs, the most inner thoughts of Cal, Ariana and Zane are stripped down to simple words and tumultuous emotions as their tale unfolds. Time waits for no one, and time is running out. The revolution has begun and someone needs to see it through to its conclusion. Will heroes die? Will the side of right prevail? When the dust settles, who will remain standing?

Picture the best carnival ride ever speeding along, twisting and turning, with moments of total darkness and glaring light, leaving you breathless and that is how Siobhan Davis writes! Reel after mental reel are played, cataloged and saved for future reference, mere memories of a series about to end and Siobhan Davis has chosen a most satisfying ending, no matter who you are rooting for! Hang on tight, as we are catapulted into a tale that will wreak havoc on your heart and soul, bring out your warrior spirit, all set to full steam ahead!

When Siobhan Davis writes, I read, I get lost in each moment and almost miss my stop back at the reality station. That is brilliant writing, brilliant storytelling, pure Siobhan!

I received an ARC edition of Destiny Rising from Siobhan Davis in exchange for my honest review.

Where do I start? first things first *happy dance*

It was beyond brilliant, totally unputdownable, wildly entertaining, edge of the seat action, full of suspence, it totally rocked.

Loved the ending, loved the book. Seeing Ari go through a hormonal pregnancy I see my former self as an 18 year old and pregnant. All the little fights I had, yet 17 years later I am still with my man. I hope Ari stays with hers.

I loved the different POV's.

This book went the way I wanted it to *insert another Happy Dance* it was an emotional roller coaster which left me in tears. Sad ones and happy ones. The book was totally unpredictable, not knowing where things would end up. One chapter was heading in one direction then something major would happen and it would get flipped to the other direction. It kept me on the edge of my seat, im lucky I still have fingernails left. I didn't even put the book down to use the loo *I know gross but so worth it. :) I tripped over one of my dogs too. my head was literally stuck in the book and I didn't see the poor thing. needless to say I finished the book in one sitting.

The writing style is easy to read and flows fluidly throughout the book. The descriptions are perfectly balanced giving enough information for your minds eye to build a picture but not too much where you get bored and start to skim.

5 *supernova* stars.

I received an ecopy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

MY THOUGHTS
This book takes place directly after the events of Beyond Reach. Ari is worried about Zane, but new memories have also resurfaced that change everything. Ari must also come to terms with her relationship with Cal, while developing her abilities. The rebellion is also on a rise and it all will end, one way or another.

Like the others in the series, this series has multiple perspectives. The difference, though, is that this time we get the perspective of Ari, Zane, and Cal. I really like seeing the different perspectives. I really can't imagine this series without the dual POV, because it just tells us so much more about the characters and gives us an idea on how they feel about what's going on. Especially on the romance. I also liked the addition of Cal, since I actually mentioned in my review on the last book how I would've loved to see Cal's perspective!

This book didn't feel as action-packed, at least in the beginning, but there's nothing wrong with that. There was a lot of focus on the romance. Ari was having a really hard time choosing and there was a lot of drama. Along with that, there were a lot of things coming to light. Not that there was no action, there definitely was, and the conclusion was satisfactory. (I'd like to mention that I didn't really have a team...)

IN CONCLUSION
Overall, I love this series and this was a fantastic conclusion! I'm kind of sad to see yet another great sci-fi series end (I've had so many favorite series end recently), but I'm glad that I discovered this series! Overall, pick this series up! All the while, I'll be waiting for Siobhan Davis' next book!

AMAZING Sci-Fi, Romance Series!

This series would make a great movie saga. This review has a hell of a lot of spoilers.

Ari:

Arianna is one of my favorite YA characters. I like the fact that she is constant. Also that she stands up and fights for what she believes in. I was okay with the mistakes Ari made because she is human. We all make mistakes. The difference being; Ari admitted and owned up to hers. I think that is what makes her a strong honorable person.
Ari was put in a horrible situation and she did the best she could. I liked the fact that Ari stayed true to Cal. Yes…Ari admitted that she still loved, Zane, and even kissed him a few times. But to me; it would not have been as realistic if she didn’t waver or have uncertainties. Ari had her memories stripped from her mind. Her 1st love was taken from her. Life is a bitch! Sometimes, I do believe things happen for a reason, but they work out the way they should.

I normally root for a heroine’s first love. With the True Calling series, I guess it’s how you view it. Technically, Cal was Ari’s 2nd. But for the readers, Cal was our 1st. I’m Team Cal. That’s never wavered.

What’s refreshing about this series was that Ari chose her 2nd love. I had my doubts along the way. Ari and Zane had a rare psychic connection, both having mind abilities. Plus, Ari had Zane’s love stolen from her. I felt like what Cal said was true. “Right now, you don’t remember. But if your memories return, you may then realize that you love him more than me.”
I think that’s a very true statement. That thought had me worried sick because there was indecision when Ari did remember that she loved Zane. I was Damn delighted when Ari declared she loved Cal more. Even though they didn’t share a physic bond; there was just something magnetic about their relationship that made it so special.

The main concept of this novel or at least my perception is; fate can choose your soul-mate, but you can choose your own destiny. I believe Arianna and Zane were fated to be together. But as Ari stated; life chances….things change. Ariana rose up and chose her destiny to be with Cal. Ari choosing Cal, her 2nd love is not typical in other stories, making it more unique. It was never about Ari’s 1st love. The irony to this series is that Ari choose her destiny to be with her 2nd, and that’s the love she fought for.

Zane:

Zane turned out to be a good guy. He grew on me, and I was able to connect with him in book 3. I found myself wanting him to be happy and find love. He deserved it. I just didn’t want him to find love with Arianna.
Zane was dealt an unfair stack of cards in life. In books 1 & 2, one of the issues I had with Zane, was his longing for Arianna. I wanted him to man up, and grow a pair. If it was meant for them to be together, then it would have played out that way.
In book 3, Zane started off in a coma. I was relieved to find out that Zane was still alive. That relief was short lived when I wasn’t sure what Ari’s decision would be.
I actually enjoyed being in Zane’s head in this book. I could sympathize more with him. When Zane accepted that it was not mean for him and Ari to be together, I thought, hallelujah! Long overdue. I respected him more as a man when he finally let her go, but I felt his heartache. I didn’t want him to be in pain.

Cal:

There’s so much to say about Cal, being so smitten for him. He’s a rare blond that I have rooted for. I loved his playful personality and his bad boy appeal. Cal’s hilarious and I thought he had the best lines in the series. I also loved the way he loved Ariana. Zane loved her just as much. But it was Cal’s love that I adored.
Another characteristic I liked about Cal was his morals and standards. As the series went on, it was thrown out there that Cal might be a traitor. I never believed it because I’d always believed in him. Cal fought for what he believed was right, and he had a good heart. He also didn’t play games. Cal wasn’t going to deal with ploys of the twisted triangle. Cal told Ari that from the beginning. He loved her wholeheartedly, but was not going to have his heart trampled on. I respect that. At one part in this story, Cal said, “Screw this! We’re though.”
My mouth was hanging open, and I thought, Wait! What just happened? But it just backed up Cal’s honest character.

I was so excited for Part III, being the 1st time in Cal’s head. He drops a ton of F bombs, but hey, that’ Cal. His POV was entertaining and fun to read. There was one part in his view where for the 1st time, I found myself angry with Cal. He’s not one to be hypocritical, so it really bothered me. When Ari and Cal finally found each other again, claiming their undying love, I couldn’t have been more thrilled. Time apart is what showed these 2 they could not live without each other. They agreed to leave the past in the past…no more secrets. Ariana needed to share some things that she had been keeping from Cal which was honorable of her to do. So, I was dumbfounded when Ari made her confession about kissing Zane 3 times and Cal stated that he wasn’t sure if he could even forgive her. Cal being livid…yes. But after weeks had passed and Cal still wasn’t sure if he could forgive Ari threw me for a loop. Upon not having seen her for 2 months, he had just told her, nothing she said would change his feelings or him wanting to be with her. Ari admits she kissed Zane, and wham…it may be over. I mean for Pete’s sake, Cal, yes they kissed. But Zane didn’t penetrate. That’s a huge difference in my books.

For once, I totally agreed with what Zane told Cal. It’s not that I ever disliked Zane, he was just in the way of Cal. But Zane’s speech to Cal, earned major points with me. Zane took the higher road, truly being an honorable man. I chunk Cal’s lapse in character of being a hypocrite, to his hormone injections.
Zane’s speech lighted a fire under Cal’s ass that was overdue. After that episode, Cal was back in my good grace.

The Story:

This 3rd final installment of the True Calling series didn’t disappoint. Now looking back, I can appreciate everything that happened, since I know the outcome. My emotions were all over the place when I read this book. I wasn’t sure how I would feel when it was over.
Loved how in this novel the love issues were not resolved until the end. Even though it damn near killed me. That concept was different. Although it was a roller coaster, it was done well, and worth the ride.

Ari’s gift was a neat aspect of the story. I liked how even though this series is Sci-fi, the story had a very realistic feel. As for I believe in premonition, 6th senses, and 3rd eyes. I don’t believe in telekinesis though. I have to draw the line somewhere. Lol.
This plotline had a lot of action, romance, and suspense. All being what makes my favorite in a genre. I liked how we got to see Ari’s gifts in action. In the end finale; Ari’s power of dismantling the bomb seemed a little farfetched. Other than that, it was a great addition to the story.

The twist with Ari’s pregnancy was a shocker. That’s some sick shit. But being an ultrasound tech for 15 ½ years, makes me question their advanced technology. That doctor should have been fired if he didn’t see the 2nd baby during her 1st ultrasound. The concept was wicked though, so I went with it with a smile.

Again, Ms. Siobhan is the queen of not only cliff hangers but suspense. I was not expecting what happened on the very last paragraph of the very last page. Literally…my mouth was hanging open. And it almost broke my heart. Praise Sonar, it turned out okay. I don’t think I could have accepted it. I would have been devastated if Cal had died.

The epilogue in this book was one of the most beautiful epilogues I have ever read. I felt all the issues that needed to be resolved were. I didn’t have any lingering questions that weren’t answered. The irony of the epilogue was epic, a delightful surprise. One I didn’t see coming. The irony to this story was satisfying, making perfect sense.
My favorite traits of a story are the connection of plots and entities within. The best stories are ones with a metaphoric or underlining purpose. The connection of events and plotlines binding together, making the concept of the novel hole. Ari with Cal. Zane with Melanie, Cal’s sister. You can’t get more ironic then that.

Destiny Rising has a beautiful ending to a wonderful Sci-fi series. I recommend this series to anyone who loves Sci-fi with a twist. Conflicted romance and action.

Siobhan Davis is one of my favourite authors, and the True Calling series was the only series of hers I had not read. Thus, I’ve recently amended that issue. Although it was a decent series, I can honestly say it is not my favourite Siobhan Davis read. Without a doubt, Siobhan Davis has come a long way since writing the True Calling series.

Even though I was not crazy about the two prior books, I did give them both three-star ratings. A part of me considered doing so with Destiny Rising, but I couldn’t quite bring myself to do so. There were times when it was a three-star rating, but as a whole it wasn’t quite all there. It was more of a two-point-five-star read, yet I opted to round down.

I think my biggest issue is that I never found myself invested in the characters and their stories. I’ve been over the love triangle thing for a long time, and the love triangle in this series failed to grab me. Add in the fact we had love triangles across multiple generations with this one and I found myself unable to get into the good stuff.

In many ways, I feel as though the whole love triangle drama overshadowed what could have been a very interesting story. I expected lots of action and plenty of twists with this one, yet things came together too quick and too easily for my liking. It seemed like bringing together the main storyline took a backseat to dealing with the love triangle, and things were resolved in the most basic of ways.

Overall, the True Calling series was a decent series even though it was not my favourite Siobhan Davis read. It kept my attention throughout, and I was happy to continue reading. I know there was a planned spin-off series, which has been put on hold, but should it be written I’m interested in giving it a read.

I received an advanced copy from the author for an honest review.

PLEASE BE AWARE, SPOILERS WILL FOLLOW SO IF YOU HAVE NOT READ THE BOOK THEN DO NOT READ THIS REVIEW!

The first novel had a lot going for it and I was very excited for it, but Ari and Cal's relationship always seemed so damn forced and not real to me and it started to make more sense when Zane was introduced WHY the relationship seemed so fake. With the first novella, I suppose it may endear people to Cal but it just made me think even less of him. First of all, he's a proud man-whore and treats women as disposable because he can except Ari won't give him the time of day so of course she's the only one for him and he turns out to be kind of a creepy stalker with the first novella. Not endearing at all. In the second novel you start to really see from Zane how much he loves and how he's trying and how he's a NICE guy and NOT a man-whore who treats women like shit.....oh but don't worry, asshole Cal shows up and is now amped up as a test dummy for the enemy but Ari "just loves him so much" even though he is a giant strong man-child with the attitude of a 3 year old of "this is mine or else I'll hurt you." Again, disliking more and more. The next novella I LOVED because we got to see Zane and Ari how they were before being separated and it did NOT seem fake or forced, it just flowed so easily and that novella gave me such hope that maybe the final novel will NOT end disastrously (can we say Hunger Games trilogy=epic fail ending!).

Alas, it would not be for this final novel. First, I did really like that we got to see different chapters from the different view points of not only Ari and Zane but even Cal. That was pretty cool, but made me hate hate HATE Cal with every fiber. Cal is a disgusting horribly violent and angry JEALOUS to the nth degree asshole!!!!! I hate hate hate that Ari chose him because that always just continues the societal norm of "it's okay ladies to let guys treat you like shit and be disposable because eventually they'll come around," yeah, after they plow through you and everyone else you two know. I do not appreciate perpetuating the bullshit story line of 'Nice guys finish last but assholes always get ahead;' Zane should NOT have finished last and Cal was a dick. I was genuinely EXCITED in the last chapter.....and sorely disappointed in the epilogue of who was standing on the front porch. Just to emphasize what a ridiculous jerk Cal is let's talk about his inner dialogue of how much he loves Ari and misses her and she's my everything that transfers to "I wonder how big her boobs are?" Wow, real stellar human being you picked their Ari. Plus when Ari and Cal are reunited I genuinely was rolling my eyes consistently and trying not to gag as this teen novel turned into a gag worthy romance novel of the asshole and the idiot girl going at it. No thank you.

In sum total, I'm just disappointed. The first novel was really good and had a lot going for it and I just feel like it went down hill. Plus, the writing style changed and I don't feel for the better. For example the first few novels and novellas there was minimal swearing and then the last novel f-bombs were being dropped everywhere! Mind you, I'm not one to talk about language being a combat Veteran and having an expressive mouth of my own, but it just felt forced and out of place since none of the other novels had that. The first novel was really good and the second novella was but the rest were utterly disappointing with a HORRIBLE epic failure of an ending.

I always get a fear inside myself when I get to the last book of a series, and I will admit I got that with this book too. I always worry that even though I loved the other books that the author would end the book in a way that ruined the whole story for me. I should have known that Siobhan wouldn't have disappointed me.

This book is so full of action and suspense. You already know things are going to go down since it is the ending of the trilogy but you are still left biting your nails as you flip through the pages.

With Ariana pregnant and a battle going on, you can't help but wonder how she is going to handle everything. She is a strong and stubborn character so you never know what she will do. I wasn't sure if she would go out for battle or stay back and try to keep her child safe. She definitely doesn't disappoint with her decision.

The love triangle is still strong as ever. I am team Cal and have been since halfway through book 2. I just couldn't decide which one was better for her and who had what intentions. I was kept on the edge of my seat with this romance all the way until the end.

Siobhan is one of the best authors I have ever read and this book conclusion proves all that she can do. Her chapters and words flow so well that it is almost impossible to pull yourself away from the pages once you start. Her books build but she is able to do it all in a way that you are hooked from the very beginning. Her word usage keeps you sucked in even during the slower periods. I have read very few authors that are able to engage me into their writing like she does.

She wrapped up her book in a way that didn't leave anything out. You found out everything you wanted to know if a way that was not rushed.

I can compare her writing to a river. Some parts of the river are slow and peaceful, other parts have rapids and waterfalls. Even after a waterfall, the river can go right back to peaceful. No matter where you are on this river you can help but admire it. Her writing does just the same. She was able to give me the waterfall then flow it so well into the peaceful ending of the book. I put the book down with a smile on my face and debated on starting all over again on book 1 because I didn't want to be out of that world yet.

Her characters have a depth in them that makes you able to picture all of them and understand their personalities. She is able to do this even with characters that you barely see. You gain their essence as you keep on reading. I was able to feel like Ariana and Zayn when reading in their perspectives. I understood their emotions. Their pain, their anger, their love. It's incredible.

I was given her book True Calling to give an honest review. I was hooked and kept on going with the rest of the books, including the novellas that she produced. What was me trying to help out an indie author turned into a need to find out what happened. I kept hoping I would be offered each book to review. I know that she has gained a true fan from me and I will forever read anything that she puts out into the world.

(I received an advance e-ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review)

description

“But I know my mind and this is my destiny.”

The answer to all questions and speculations of Novo and Earth residents is finally given. The last installment in the fantasy, science fiction True Calling Trilogy, Destiny Rising, is the antidote for the cliffhanger given by Siobhan Davis.

It was written like the other books in this trilogy, fast- paced and surprising. After reminding everyone how things ended in Beyond Reach, some answers and revelations were given in the first chapter already. The thrill in each chapter keeps adding up to the next one. Revelations overlapping another revelation. The pace of the story wasn’t tiring instead it pushed me to read, to finish until I reached the last page. The events in this book especially the ones I thought I could handle left my heart and mind racing.

The whole story was exceptionally written, helping me remember what happened in the past books, and stunning me how things will be concluded.

At the beginning, I did not realize I was holding my breath until I was halfway through the epilogue. Reaching the epilogue is not as nice I thought it would be. I thought the roller coaster ride will end when I reached it but I was wrong, one last wild turn and downfall first before I got the chance to sigh a relief!

Destiny Rising is an anticipated conclusion book, what’s inside is totally overrated. I thought I got the last laugh when I was predicting a plot twist, but I was wrong. Everything in this book is unexpected!

Siobhan Davis, an exceptional author, knows how to wrap a reader around her fingers.

Oh. My. God. Before I can even get into all of my thoughts about this book let me just say this. YOU NEED TO READ THIS SERIES! The first two books are just a set up of the mass amounts of craziness that will make your mind feel like a tornado of craziness with all of your emotions constantly slapping you in the face. I can’t remember a book that took ahold of me as much as this one did. There were so many times where I told myself that it couldn’t get any more twisted, and what does Mrs. Davis do? She throws bomb after bomb of events into this world. I was absolutely hooked!

This is probably my favorite installment of the series so far (I still have to read the two novellas). There is so much going on, but at the same time it isn’t to the point that it makes the story feel like it is a mass of confusion. There were so many tragic and happy events happening one after the other that you had no idea what you were experiencing as a reader. You were hooked, but not confused for ENTIRE the duration of the book. There definitely wasn’t a dull moment in sight!

The character development was fulfilling as an end to the series. We get to experience the points of view from Ariana, Zane, and (for the first time!) Cal. As a reader, I could see the differences between the three books in the development of the characters and their reactions to each other which brought the story to a great ending.

You know that feeling you get when you have about 20ish pages left in a book but there is just so much still going on that you don’t know how in the heck it is going to end? Yeah, this is that book. I felt like the book had so much going on that it ended with you face first into a concrete wall. I think the story concluded on a perfect note that left me satisfied. Questions are answered and events click together. This book received a full 5 out of 5 stars from me. I was literally freaking out alongside Ari, Cal, and Zane multiple times. It was highly enjoyable, easy to read, and extremely engaging. If you haven’t started this series yet, you know you are missing so much! Siobhan will grab your heart and soul with the ending of this awesome series.

Must Read!!! Oh man! I'm so sad it's over! Destiny Rising was an excellent conclusion to a tremendously wonderful series! I absolutely loved this series, and reading this book has made me want to re-read the first book in the series, True Calling, I have a yearning to read about these characters as they once were. So much has happened to these characters, and they all have grown so much! Ari was amazing in this book, and I loved that she was right in the action and she was so strong! She's such a great female character, she isn't perfect, but that's what makes her great. I think both Cal and Zane are great also, and I enjoyed reading about them as well. This story has evolved into an epic adventure! I loved all the action scenes, and of course I loved the romance, and I don't want to give anything away, so I'll just say I'm glad with how it ended. There was one thing I would have changed, but I don't want to spoil it, so I'll stop here. I also wanted more Ari! I liked the Zane point of view stuff, but I wasn't totally in love with it, but in no way did it deter from my utter enjoyment of this book, and I loved Cal's point of views scenes, and of course I love Ari's. I love the world building in this series. Siobhan Davis is a terrific writer, who really draws a reader into a scene. I really look forward to more books by Siobhan Davis, and I'm so glad I got to read this series. I definitely recommend this series, 5 stars across the board. Truly Excellent!

I was given a copy of the first two books in this series by the author in exchange for an honest review. After reading the first, I just HAD to buy the novella that comes between 1 and 2 and read that first. After reading 2, I HAD to buy the other novella as well as book 3 when it came out. I'm not disappointed that I did either. This series is extremely good! It combines my love of dystopian fiction, along with my love of paranormal things. And we even get a bit of tech nerdiness and Sci-Fi as well. The only reason I gave this book 4 instead of 5 stars is purely because my own desires and wishes as far as Ari's choices in the book were not met. That is selfish, but hey, I had my ship and I didn't get it! I have to admit, however, that the way the book and series ended was well done, and while not the way I'd have liked things to play out, did make sense within the story. I can't thank Davis enough for enticing me into this world of hers with the first two books and I definitely recommend this series for lovers of the genres I've mentioned.

So so so many emotions with this one. I've been Team Cal since the beginning, but I finally started to have my doubts. Their relationship is such a mess and get so ugly, that I wasn't sure they could move forward. And I really like Zane as well... can't a girl just have two boyfriends? Sister wives style... or brother husbands? It could totally work.

A lot of secrets are revealed throughout this book, and so many things make sense now. Amidst all the relationship and family drama, there's a pretty epic war brewing. I loved the role Ari played and how strong she became. There were more heartbreaking losses, but there were also some lovely reunions.

I was so stressed out the whole time reading this, not knowing how it would end. I loved it through, and I'm looking forward to reading the series again.

I received a free book copy for an honest review

Rating 3.5

I have very mixed emotions about this book.

First of all everything just seemed waaayyy too rushed.

The plot seemed to make up for it though.

I really love this series but everything was definitely rushed.

Ending:

The ending feels similar to the hunger games

I love this whole series! This short story is a prequel to the True Calling series, and gives us more background on Ariana's parents, and Cal's dad. This was about the problems that occurred between the parents when they were younger. Cal's dad has never been one of my favorite people, but this story did make me feel bad for him. This should be read after the main books of the series; at least the first 2 books, because there are some spoilers in it. For anyone who loves this series, definitely give this a read!

This review is just going to break my heart so much.

In complete honesty, I really had mixed feelings about this book. First lemme talk about the characters. Arianna was a great heroine in this book. She is extremely strong and had a lot of sass. However, I really had a love hate relationship with her. Her actions and lies in this book irked me to no end. I really could understand why Cal was angry at her. Also, Zane don’t get me started on him. I felt sorry for him but I honestly don’t know what to think. Cal was a pretty good character. He has gone through so much and it all due point Cal was extremely swoony and cool. He does have a hot temper but his love for Ari is deep down there. But his venomous words and ability to get in fights also irked me at times. In plain honestly, the entire crew in Destiny Rising made me want to bash them and hug them at the same time.

The romance in this book I have go to say is very realistic. I love that Cal and Ariana have a lot to work through. But also I felt that they were being childish. They have typical couple problems. But the making up scenes really warmed up my heart.

The entire plot line and pacing had me feel happy and sad at the same time. I really loved the action and fight scenes. There were some really evil characters and unexpected twists. However, some of the twists really did not make me happy. I just feel like Ariana’s parents were a bunch of jerks at times. Micha, god don’t get me started, I really hated her but she was an amazing villain. One thing that really bothered me in this book was the entire span. I felt that there was no reason for this book to last several months to almost an year. I just felt extremely disconnected with the characters. I felt that the ending was like rising, rising, and then big cliffy and then epilogue. Also, while the writing was extremely good. However, I felt that the POVs should have switched more often. I missed out on Ariana, Zane, and Cal at several points.

Overall though, I did enjoy reading this book despite some of the issues with the plot line. I really loved the entire world creation and the touches of paranormal stuff here and there. I highly recommend this series. What an amazing roller coaster ride. I will miss the entire True Calling crew. Great job Davis. Because of this, the book will receive four stars.

First Off, I want to thank Siobhan Davis for sending me an ARC of this fabulous SCI-FI series.

Intense.Gripping.Heartbreaking And Overall Exceptional

I can’t even express in words just how much I LOVE THIS SERIES !! I am eternaly grateful for crossing paths with this new and amazingly talented writer.

ONE OF THE BEST SCI-FI SERIES I’VE EVER READ ! THIS SERIES IS A TOTAL MUST READ !!!!!

I do not fall easily for dystopian or Sci-Fi genre, and I must solemnly admit that True Calling is among my Favorite ones. It captivated me from writing style to character development, from plot to twist, everything is captivating and the action and the intensity of the writing keeps you on edge. I don’t know if I’ve said this before – and even if I did, it’s worth repeating – but this series unlike anything I have read.

Destiny Rising is the 3rd and last instalment in the True Calling series. It is the epic conclusion of the most wonderful and intense YA Sci-Fi series I’ve ever read and it’s action packed, full of secrets and twists.

PART 1 – ARIANA

While back at the Saoirse facility, after the Gouverment’s attack that’s been strictly developed by the Novo gouverment and Callista Corr’s estranged husband, Chancellor Corr; the compound they are hiding at is desperately working on the development of security assigning a job for each cadet.
Things between our beloved characters Ariana and Cal, seem to tense up with each passing moment as they keep on arguing over who’s dad is telling the whole truth and which one is lying. A very deep, heartbraking and shocking secret is being revealed in this part and sets everyone on the edge. Deacon’s – Ari’s younger brother – father is not the one he knows, and Ariana is fighting with Cal over the fact that her dad does not want to tell him yet, because he’s too young to comprehend all that awaits to be revealed. Things tense up even more once Amber – Cal’s ex-girlfriend - makes her presence known in the Saoirse’s compound. Jealousy fills the air and tension builds up like a brick wall between Cal and Ari and this makes them drift apart even more. It feels like they don’t trust each other anymore.
As promised, they go on a rescue mission on Novo, to bring Zane back to Earth. A mission in which Ariana is not included, due to her pregnancy, but this doesn’t stop her from sneaking into the stealth craft – if she would only go unnoticed. After a brief argument with her dad that led to no result, agent Leena appears and convinces Commander Skyee to let Ariana on board. Their mission doesn’t go without loss of lives and one of the most important persons – Agent Leena – dies in a fire exchange. Ariana doesn’t get out unharmmed either, being shot in the arm. When they get back home, Ariana is being put in choosing position by Cal.
Who will she be choosing ? Cal or Zane ? No matter who she will choose, one of them will end up heartbroken.

She can’t come out on terms with Cal, because she is being sent away immediately to Greece - along with the flirtatious doctor Taylor, of course - by her dad.

Part 2 - Zane

After searching her out all over the compound, Zane, finally goes to her apartment. The two boys are starting to worry about Ariana’s sudden disappearance. Not wanting to have anything to do with Cal, Zane decides to go talk to Malcom about Ariana’s missing. It isn’t long until he’s being called to a meeting concerning his IT project and finally finds out why she left all of a sudden without even so much a goodbye. What he finds hard to comprehend is the reason why she is blocking him for this long. This is the moment when he also learns the true and shocking reason for the tension that’s build up between Cal and Ariana. Even with all he’s find out since his arrival at the compound, he still wants to be where the love of his life is.. He makes a deal with Malcom regarding the development of his IT project, a deal which implies that they bring his mom and brother safe and sound at the compound. Done and sealed. Malcom is a man of word, always respects his promises. Zane also asks his bestfriend to track down not only Micha to find out her whereabouts, but also to see if Isla is alive. Turns out Isla is more than just alive and well, she also part of the rebelion just outside the Clementia compound – well, what’s left of it , anyway. After he tells Zane that Isla is somewhere in SF in a rebel mission, he talks to Malcom to let him go there and check on her, another done deal. Only that things don’t go silent and the Government’s people are droping bombs on them on their first night there, and therefore this leads both to panic - wanting to help - tragedies.

Part 3 - Cal

When Ari comes back to Saoirse, she unloads the secrets she's been so afraid of telling him that they fall apart once again. Will he be able to forgive and forget what Ari had just confessed or will they break up for good ?

The last part of the book is the most intense of all and that is because of the load of action that it carries. From the unexpected reunions, to baby and wedding news, to kicking some ass and last but not least the biggest of all : Ariana's great talent that WOWs everyone. The whole Part 4 will be keeping you on the very edge.

I have to admit though, that by the end of the book, I kind of started to hate it for I have thought that he'll die.

Just woah.. This series was a whirlwind of a love story. So much action.. twists and turns. In the end I am happy everyone is happy. I only wonder what happened with Isla?
I was really happy for Zane in finding his happiness. Him and Cal were able to chill out and actually be in the same room together without wanting to hurt each other. That was great.
I could not put any of the books down till I was done. I had to know what happened. Amazing work! :-)

Now its back to see what the Kennedy boys have been up to!
Thank you for all the great books!

My thoughts are still kind of jumbled, as sometimes happens to me after reading a book with a lot of plot action. There was so much going on in this book. I think I'm definitely going to completely reread the whole series in a few weeks or so, to really get the full effect. I wanted to reread the whole series beforehand, but also didn't want to wait to read the final installment.

One of the things I liked about Beyond Reach was that within minutes of reading I was right there in Siobhan's world again. This also happened to me with Destiny Rising. Even though I wished I had reread the prequels (because that's just something I like to do when a new book in a series comes out), Siobhan made it easy for me to remember things that had happened in the previous book, even though it had been months since I read it.

There were so many surprises in this book. It's truly amazing how much she packed into one book, but it didn't feel rushed or awkward. When my 13 month old went down for a nap, and I had 12% left in my book, I wasn't sure if I would be able to finish it before he woke up. The percentage of a book doesn't really tell you much sometimes. I grappled with the decision, but in the end I decided I just could not wait to finish the book, I would just take my chances! I'm so glad I did. I can't believe how much she packed into the ending, too. I thought she was going to need more space to finish the book, but she didn't. Somehow she wrapped it all up in a way that made sense, without it feeling rushed.

I really liked this book. I'm glad she showed things from Cal's point of view, even though I still have trouble liking him as a character at times. I think it's because he's just a bit hotheaded- and I keep having to remind myself about WHY he's so hotheaded- the government interference.

I loved seeing Ari's skills develop and it was nice to see her even out a bit. She can be very dramatic, but she's also 17 and pregnant, so I got that. I liked the underwater facility, that was really cool.

I honestly, still, cannot believe all of the whammy that this author packed into her book. It's really hard to believe she's a newer, less well known author. I feel so lucky to have stumbled upon her through NetGalley when True Calling first came out. It's insane how quickly she's put out these three books, and the quality is so incredibly good.

I really liked the way she tied things up with the Epilogue. Siobhan is definitely one of those authors where I'll be reading anything new that she puts out.

**I received a digital copy of this book from the author as a part of the blog tour organised by Lola's Blog Tours in exchange for an honest review.**

I wanted to read this book so badly because I wanted to know how everything was going to end. When I found out this blog tour I was more than happy and I instantly signed up for it. I loved this book, it definitely lived up to its expectations.

Summary-

The book takes off right where Beyond Reach, book 2 left off. Ariana, Zane, Cal and everyone else continue their fight for freedom on Earth under the tyranny of Novo. Ari and Cal are safe in an underwater facility after Novo bombed their headquarters in Florida. Zane has been been left behind in the Connecticut facility in a coma after being shot, his heart failing him. Ari remembers everything from her past and she holds the key to the secret, she knows the ultimate reason why the war is taking place. Everything becomes a mess in the war zone while she has to deal with her feelings and her pregnancy. When she is faced with the most difficult challenge, she has to make the hardest decision- to save herself or to save everyone she loves.

Plot-

I really enjoyed the plot which was really good. It focused more on the romantic aspect than the war. I was glad the love triangle was finally sorted out at the beginning, I think it was pretty clear who Ari was going to choose and she stuck with her choice which I liked very much. There was a greater emphasis on Ari’s psychic abilities and it was great to see them develop as she took control of herself. I was satisfied how everything was sorted out in the end. The plot twist was great, there were so many secrets that were spilled and the mystery was finally unveiled which was hinted in the previous novella (book 2.5)- Light of a Thousand Stars. I definitely liked the action which finally took place near the end. Though I would have liked, if there was a bit more explanation given about the rebellions and the war and how everything wrapped up in the end, nonetheless I enjoyed the plot very much.

Characters-

I liked every character in this book, all the characters grew up so much and were much more mature than the previous books. I really loved the character development that took place in this book. Ari grew up so much, I loved her determination and effort to keep everything under control and she made amends of her mistakes that she made in the past. She was a mature and grown woman in this book and she confidently took her decesions. I definitely warmed up to Cal in this book though he was still not my favourite. He acted immaturely and childishly sometimes but I understood he did out those out of insecurity. Zane, as usual, I loved him. He has always been a mature character and he was so much more in this book. I loved how he handled the situations and didn’t harbour any grudge against anyone, he was simply a good hearted person. I reeeeally wanted to know more about Zane and his happily ever after. I loved all the other side characters, they were supportive and played an active part in the rebellion.

Writing style-

I definitely loved the writing, it had developed so much since the first book. The flow was smooth and the writing was beautiful and descriptive, I liked how the dialogues were carried out, the pace was even and fast throughout the book and I didn’t feel bored for even a second. Though this book was big indeed, I easily finished it in two days as it was very addicting.

Overall-

The plot was great, the plot twist and the secrets kept it addicting from the very start, I loved the character development of all the main characters, it was great to see them more mature and selfless. The romance was good, the writing style was smooth and descriptive and the pace was even throughout the book. I was definitely satisfied with the ending and I loved this book very much.

Recommend it?

Definitely yes. If you loved the 1st two books tyen you have to read this epic conclusion to the story.

AWESOME SERIES!

I fell in love with the characters, felt like I knew them personally! I literally cried with them and cheered them on out loud! My husband thinks I've lost it! I can't say enough about this book and series! I was on the edge of my seat, perfectly paced with just enough action to keep me interested and reading every word (I have a tendency to skim if fighting is too drawn out), and the live was sweet with no sex scenes, thank you! A must read!

Destiny Rising is the final book in the True Calling trilogy. Before reading this, I strongly recommend reading the first two in the trilogy as well as the two in-between short stories that fill in some of the backstory. That being said, this book catapults the reader back into the midst of the Zane-Ari-Cal love triangle, and then some. Add in the nasty turn the revolution is taking, pregnancy hormones run rampant, and misunderstandings and jealousy, and it’s one wild rollercoaster of action and emotion.

So, returning to the love triangle. Every time it seems the triangle will resolve, something happens. I truly had no idea how things would turn out until midway through the epilogue. It kept me on the edge the whole time. Plus, other romantic interests and possibilities popped up unexpectedly, fueling confusion, jealousy, and guilt in the three main characters. The level of suspense maintained from beginning to end is impressive, and that’s just on the romantic side of things.

On to the revolution. Whoa, stuff really hits the fan in this book. Battles, attacks, and staggering losses abound. No one is safe. There were so many times I wanted to cry out in shock, wishing fervently that what just happened would magically (or scientifically) right itself. Despite the powerful advancements in medical technology the book hints at, some things just cannot be fixed. Again, suspense and the urge to turn the page were almost overwhelming, resulting in quite a few long nights.

As for the quality of the book, even as an ARC that hadn’t gone through the final editing round, I found this book very well-written and well-edited. The story is complex, but solidly built. And everything wraps up cleanly and completely, but not too soon. Good to the last page, in my opinion.

Still, I noticed a few confusing spots where I had to check who said what (the actions of other characters are placed in the same paragraph where another’s dialog is, sometimes without attribution) and others where I thought I detected some sort of timeline issue (specifically one where the age of one character when her mom died (9) vs. the current age of the character (17) vs. number of years elapsed since the death (5) didn’t match up). I also thought the mediscan was more deus ex machina than sci fi.

One last thought is that the catastrophe that sent people to Novo and resulted in the dystopian society doesn’t seemed to have affected Earth all that much. It just doesn’t seem to reflect in damage to anything or in loss of life or in changes to anything other than implementation of martial law and social controls. Even after reading the whole trilogy, I still feel like the whole thing was manufactured via government propaganda so they could take over the world and that it possibly never actually happened.

Overall, I really liked this book and the trilogy as a whole. Great character building, an epic level of suspense both in action and romance, and an interesting sci fi twist will please those who love YA Dystopia and who want something to keep them engrossed to the end. However, some gaps in world building, the science behind the sci fi, and the catastrophe that spawned the whole thing may bug readers who prefer a more probable sci fi experience.

I received an eARC of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of this review.

Destiny Rising
by Siobhan Davis is the final book in her True Calling series that follows the story of Ari, Zane and Cal as they fight for freedom on Earth under the tyranny of Novo. Ari and Cal are safe in an underwater facility after Novo bombed their headquarters in Florida. Zane having been left behind in the Connecticut facility in a coma after being shot, his heart failing him. Can Ari save everyone she loves AND free Earth?

Please note that if you have not read the previous books in this series that there are minor, unavoidable spoilers in this review!

Oh Ari! What am I to do with you? She grew up SO much this book. I had found her a bit annoying with her immaturity during the last two books, BUT that changes in this one. She makes huge headway with her psychic ability and she finally chooses between the two guys. Her memories are back too and boy does that not help her decision or her heart! I ached for her in this book and the choices she had to make.

Cal, who if you've followed my reviews you know he's not my favorite, grew on me as well. He's got a better hold of his temper as his hormones start to settle after everything that was done to him on Novo. On top of that his memories are back as well. His love/obsession for Ari is still there, along with his insecurity in her love for him. BUT he does a big thing, or maybe a rash thing when he tells her he's making the decision for her. Read the book and you decide ;)

Zane....oh Zane. I shipped you from the beginning :D Zane has a rough go in this book. And I feel like he gets the short end of the stick as well. Maybe that's just in my head though. His love and devotion to Ari and her family come first in ALL his decisions, but a choice that Ari makes at about halfway will change his character drastically!

So the plot of this book is more romantic than action I felt. It centered on Ari and the two guys and then during the last chapter you get the explosive all-out action scene. One thing I do like, even if I personally didn't agree, is that the author has Ari choose between Zane and Cal early on (at like 30-40%) so the love triangle is gone and there is more focus on the other guy rebuilding his life AND the actual romance between Ari and her choice. This I liked! I hate it when a triangle is dragged out too long.

My only dislike, and this is why it received 4 instead of 5 stars, is that I felt like there wasn't enough explanation to the war between the rebels and Novo. Also there really wasn't much on the actual rebellion. There was a lot of information about the romance, but little focus on the war and what led to it. As I already stated, the last two chapters of the book are explosive (figuratively and literally) and are the only time the book focuses solely on the bigger plot point.

Overall I love the series and this is a good conclusion....even if I didn't agree with Ari's choice ;) I do wish the battle between the rebels and Novo was explained more but really all in all it's a great book! If you're a fan of the series, I doubt you'll be disappointed. If you enjoy sci-fi, fantasy, and dystopians go get the books!

First posted at Words Fueled by Love.

For a conclusion of a series I would say that I'm semi-satisfied. I do like my happily-ever-afters so I'm pleased about some aspects (keeping vague for those who have yet to delve into the world of True Calling), but since I've always been on Team Zane I can't honestly say that I'm 100% happy with the way the series ended. I've always felt that Ariana had a deeper soul connection with Zane and a more lustful connection with Cal. Through most of the story I was always questioning how she could ignore her deeper feelings, even though she claims she can't get past a decision they made together. That their relationship was tainted because of it. It never did make much sense to me. Zane was the one person who was always there for her, from the time she was about 14 up. He continually sacrificed an incredible amount for her - including his own heart and love. And in the end, it seems he literally settles for someone else. Meh.... Thumbs down!

Aside from my feelings over the love triangle between Ariana, Zane and Cal, this part of the story is the culmination of the war between the rebels and the government. Much of the book is battle scenes between them and the preparation to take back their planets, Earth and Novo. So there's a ton of action. When there's down time it's infused with emotionally charged scenes and definitely some butterfly worthy scenes.

Though I didn't start out loving the series, I will say that I felt that the writing improved in each book, and the early irritations I had became close to nonexistent with each book. By the end I was able to enjoy the story, read through it quickly and overall say that I enjoyed the series.

If you enjoy YA science fiction mixed with romance then give this series a try!

Check out my reviews of the earlier books:
True Calling #1 - (3 stars)
Lovestruck (True Calling #1.5) - (3.5 stars)
Beyond Reach (True Calling #2) - (3.5 stars)
Light of a Thousand Stars (True Calling #2.5) - 4 stars

Favorite Quotes:
But war means sacrifices in the name of the greater good. We have to accept that it'll get harder before it gets easier.

We have a real connection, Ari and I. A connection that is built on the foundation of friendship, one that transcends attraction and lust, a true relationship that signifies how deep our feelings run, the strength of our love.

And isn't that what real love is? Accepting each other for our faults as much as our strengths?

I cannot put my love for Siobhan Davis' True Calling series into words. I fell in love with the characters, the world and everything that makes this series unique when I read the first page of the first book. I would like to thank the author for providing me with ARCs and allowing me to participate in her blog tours as well as the Novo Squad.

So much happened in this book! It took me awhile to wrap my mind around everything. It was full of surprises and always had me on the edge of my seat. Packing a lot into one book usually results in the book coming across as rushed and sloppy, but Davis was able to pack all the action in beautifully! Not once did anything feel rushed or forced, and everything that was occurring had an important role in the plot, nothing was filler.

I loved how the story alternated between the perspectives of Cal, Ari and Zane. I have to say though, I was never a big fan of Cal's hate to say his sections did not make me like him any better. He is very hotheaded, which I understand is not entirely his fault but I cannot seem to get over how much of a jerk he is at times. Also, I know he is a teenage boy but come on, he had been separated from the love of his life for awhile and finds out she is missing and practically the first thing that comes to his mind is how big her breasts have gotten. Really Cal??

Being the final book in the series, it is inevitable that Ari has to finally decide if she wants to be with her new love Cal or her first love Zane. And her decision broke some hearts, including mine. But that's all I will say on that.

Ari herself grows a lot as a character in this book which is great. In order for a book to be considered good, in my opinion, there has to be character development. Ari can be stubborn but she really grows and matures, her situation and life kind of forces her to. She learns to use and control her psychic powers which are pretty awesome and created some amazing scenes in the book.

This book was such an emotional roller coaster. It tugs at your heart strings and messes with your feelings but it is so wonderful. The writing is brilliant and flows wonderfully. There is never a dull moment so you never want to put the book down (I know I didn't want to). Davis brings the series to a close with an epilogue that ties everything together perfectly. While I was saddened that my choice in the love triangle lost out, I think he does pretty well for himself in the end. The True Calling series was a fantastic ride to experience. Along the way some beloved friends were lost, hearts were broken, secrets were revealed, and chaos ensued, but in the end everything worked out. I look forward to more by Davis as she easily made this one of my favorite series and I cannot do anything but expect more great stories from her.

Okay, honestly? I don't think I'm going to be able to do this book justice with my review but I'll give it my best shot.. Here goes..

Siobhan is quickly becoming one of my favourite authors. All of the books I have read by her so far, (The True Calling Series), have made me laugh, cry and very often left me in pieces. She puts so much emotion into her books that you can't help but love every single page.

I am devastated that I have finished this series, however this doesn't make me love the story any less and I am excited to see what Siobhan comes up with next. One things for sure, I will definitely be keeping up to date with her future work.

Anyway, back to the book at hand. Okay, so I didn't get the ending that I so badly wanted to see but once I finished this book I had gotten over it because the ending that is given is so much better than anything I had envisioned. Its not a secret that I was team Zane. And for a small moment in the book I got to see what it would be like and that is when Ari is overwhelmed with emotion when she finds out that Zane isn't dead and he finally comes into contact with her. They quite literally collide.

"Zane? Zane? Is that really you?" I slide over to the wall and tuck my knees up under my chin. "Yes, baby. I'm alive."

My relief and emotion at this point was off the charts. Seriously you only have to sample one of her books to realize how much emotion and love she puts into them. In this book Ari gets to focus on herself and build on her powers. This ultimately helps their side toward the war. Ari and her visions are everything that they need to turn it all around.

"I just witnessed our complete annihilation."

So at this point in my review its pretty clear that Ari chooses Cal. This in the end, however is something I realize to be the right choice. Besides she doesn't leave Zane without anyone. She brings Mel into his life who is very much like Ari. He stays friendly with Arianna which is the only way that it could ever have happened because they still love and care about each other so very much. Including caring about each others families.

Almost as tall as her sister, she shares the same piercing blue eyes, though they're not as stunning as Ari's peepers. Of course, I'm probably biased.

I have so much love for this book and series that I cannot rave about this book enough. You are seriously missing out on something amazing if you haven't read these books.

Thank you again to Siobhan for letting me read and review the series, its been a pleasure. <3
