I enjoyed this book a lot more when I first read it nine years ago. It's a story that I've carried with me all that time, and rereading it took away some of the magic from it. I really dislike omniscient writing and jumping from one person's perspective to another took away some of the spark.
I still love the ending, though.

Paula Vince has made an interesting start to the Quenarden trilogy with well-rounded characters that the readers have opportunity to really get to know and identify with, and a good solid, exciting plot. The story is reminiscent of C.S. Lewis’ The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe in that the three heroes find a secret passage into another world called Quenarden, where they discover they play a major role in Quenarden’s prophesies in freeing the people from a fear-based dictatorship form of government, with a terrifying monster at the heart of it. The pace of the story is slow at times and often I feel like the narrative tells me far too much that dialogue and character-actions could do much more effectively. But there are some very creative and original ideas throughout and it was an enjoyable read. I look forward to reading the second and third parts.

The Lion, The Witch and The Wardarobe meets MacBeth if written by Louisa Alcott. A compelling enough story for children.
