City Slicker at the Horny Goat Ranch

Rate this book
Keith Kelley doesn’t normally take kindly to strangers, but his flashy new neighbor has long legs, lips made for kissing and might prove too much temptation for a boy hiding his sexuality in rural Idaho. Unfortunately, between working his mom’s goat ranch and land disputes with his wealthy father, Keith has enough problems. He doesn’t need the best sex of his life threatening to expose all his secrets.

Real estate developer Max Levin vows to turn the one-stoplight town of Pookataw Valley into a vacation destination…and then leave before the dust clears. With his next assignment in five months, Max shouldn’t start loving the quaint little town—the ranchland, the mountains, even the goats. If only Max could stop thinking about his sexy neighbor and the time they shared in the front seat of Keith’s truck. Because he especially shouldn’t fall in love with a guy who can’t openly love him back.

In a town the size of Pookataw Valley, nothing stays secret for long. If Keith wants to hold onto his birthright, he’ll have to fight for his land and his pride. Most of all, he’ll have to fight for Max before he slips through Keith’s fingers.

contains angry parents, horny ranchers and snarky city boys just asking to be hogtied.

TOTAL WIN!

This book came out of nowhere, and I really liked it!

It was FUN, cute, polished, and entertaining, an easy read with two likable MCs.

(But no actual horny goats, so don't be going there.)

Max works for a land development firm. When he finds himself in bumfucking Idaho, he thinks he's the only gay man on the moon.

Not so, Max. NOT SO.

Sexy rancher Keith hits on Max from day one. Sadly, Keith is scared of his own gay shadow, and Max doesn't know what to do with the rough country boy. Besides lick him all over, of course.

What starts off as a friendly-neighbors, then friends-with-benefits arrangement turns into more, MUCH MORE, like lube and massage oil and suck-me-in-this-truck-NOW kind of more.

Keith's mom throws a hissy fit, and Max has to reconcile his concept of home, but the Horny Goat Ranch builds heroes, not quitters.

I loved the juxtaposition of slick, I-wax-all-over Jewish boy with red-neck, yes-I-actually-wear-Western-shirts cowboy.

Keith was up to the task. He even bet he could teach Max a few tricks.

"Bet I can make you call to Jesus." Keith pushed Max back in his seat, and took him in a long, fast suck.

"You know I'm Jewish, right?"

There was some hot lovin' here (probably not enough for my tastes, but I'm a perv like that) and enough feels to make me go googly-eyed.

This is a deliciously light story, fluffy around the edges with some cowboy meat in between.

Plus, KIDS (of the goat variety) and a pretty damn sweet epilogue!

I dare you to resist.

I can’t take anymore. This book is just weird.
Weird interactions, weird dialogue.

Some examples:

Max has just met his new neighbor Keith. Keith takes Max home because Max’s car is in the shop. They stop at Keith’s house. And of course it is perfectly normal for Max to take a shower there and to make lunch for Keith and his mother wearing nothing but a towel. Yup, I do that all the time!

description

And how these guys talk to each other.

“I like to shop local when I can.”
“Okey dokey, Levin.”
“You’re funny, you know that, Kelley ?” Before he knew what he was doing, he pushed Keith in the shoulder—and damn if he couldn’t feel the swell of Keith’s biceps through his jacket. Max snatched his hand back, not sure what had gotten into him. “Yeah.” Keith coughed into his hand, looking flustered.

Wait…. did I miss something funny? Because this was awful.

And if my MC finds someone attractive I want to read all about it. I don’t like it that Max thinks that Keith is slightly attractive and then sums up all of the things that are wrong with him. I never felt the attraction. Even during the first make out scene it’s more of a contest who can blow the other one better. I didn’t like it.

If I can’t connect with the characters and I honestly don’t like them I know I won’t enjoy the rest of the book.

Ok, I admit that it was the title that caught my eye. But the story was what kept me reading. I love "fish out of water" stories, and Max, being such a city boy, is definitely out of his element in right edge of nowhere Idaho.

Max Levin, our city slicker, is a real estate developer. His job is to travel around from job-site to job-site making sure that the development goes as it should. He's never anywhere more than a few months, so he really has no roots. He tends to not mix much with the locals since he doesn't intend to stick around, but he does make the effort to blend as well as he can. He wasn't prepared for just how out of the way he was, though, until his car gets stuck in a snow bank and he can't get cell service. Getting rescued by a very cute (and closeted) country boy can only be trouble.

Keith Kelley lives and works at his mother's ranch - the Horny Goat Ranch. Yep, they raise goats. Keith is gay, but never hooks up so close to home. He is closeted and has no intention of changing that any time soon. Pulling Max's Mercedes out of a snow bank and discovering that he is the one that will be developing that plot of land next to his ranch is just too much temptation, though. One hookup, leads to another and another... and Keith and Max are hot together.

I loved City Slicker at the Horny Goat Ranch. It was a hot bit of fluff and not terribly angsty and the ending was melt-worthy.

Definitely recommended.

After reading this and David's Selfie , I ' ve decided that I like light, cute and low angst Daisy Harris better.

Keith is a closeted gay goat rancher .And I mean really, REALLY closeted bordering on paranoid sometimes.

Max is a city boy who has come to Keith's small town for buisness. The attraction is instant. At first they become friends with benefits, but their feelings for each other grow day by day.

This was a great read and it had many of the qualities I like in a book ; slow burn, a little bit of angst, great narrating pace and it was really engaging. The epilogue left me happy and warm. Oh, and it contains the hottest goat carrying in history.

Plus look at these cuties

Highly recommended !

Didn't love this one like I was sure I would. The story was fine but the writing (especially the dialogue) was awkward and hard to follow. Plus I just didn't warm up to the characters as much as I would have liked. I did like Max but wasn't buying the guys as a couple.

I like stories about farmers, cowboys, and ranchers and especially when they are isolated and then find another gay person to be their soulmate. Sounds cheesy but I like cheesy.

This was a fairly simple story. It would have been nice once Keith came out of the closet for us to get more reaction from the townsfolk since he was so worried about that. I wanted to know the reaction of the guy who fixed Max's car. I think he would have been cool with it. I also wanted to know Frank's reaction. I think he was the lead ranch hand or something.

At one point I didn't like Keith very much but then he wasn't so bad anymore. I wanted just a bit more detail on exactly how Keith's dad screwed his ex-wife out of the land. Also why all of a sudden is the dad telling Keith about his part of the land in the trust. I didn't buy the reason we were given and wanted more information. Could have made for a more intriguing story.

What a fun read! How can you not smile with "Horny Goat Ranch" in the title?

There was just about everything I like in this book. Low angst, laughter, growing together, acceptance, goats and kids, and a lovely HEA :)

Keith and Max are hot, sexy, and funny together. The story keeps up the pace and doesn't drag.

This book just went to my "take me to my happy place" shelf. If you're looking for a read that will make you smile and help you find you "happy place" grab this one!

This review was written for Joyfully Jay Reviews.

Keith Kelley has been hiding his true feelings about a lot of stuff: his sexuality, his frustration over giving up college, and his parents’ acrimonious divorce top the list. He lives in rural Idaho, in a place called Pookataw Valley that is being overtaken by developers creating vacation homes for rich people. Keith’s family trust owns millions of dollars of prime ranch land, yet his mother and he eke out a living farming meat goats on the Horny Goat Ranch—so-named to shame Keith’s philandering father.

Keith is rather pissed to learn his dad sold a prime piece of land neighboring the Horny Goat. And, he’s not best pleased to learn the cute, young, stranded motorist he towed out of a snowbank is the land’s new developer. Max is a lithe, well-turned-out, gay man, and Keith’s never brought his hook-ups even within the county line, so having all that sexy temptation within eyeshot of his back porch is really a stress.

Max Levin is not sure what to make of Keith. He’s young, but big and strong. Curious but standoffish. And, best of all, Keith is kind—genuinely kind. He helps people out because he can, not for any agenda. They have great chemistry, despite Keith being completely different from Max’s usual type. Unfortunately, Keith is closeted. Max doesn’t want to live in a closet, but he also doesn’t want to be a monk for the next several months. A casual relationship would be ideal, but it comes with risks—namely outing Keith in his conservative hometown.

This is a light read that still has lots of heart. Both characters are good guys who need a solid partner, but are afraid to commit for valid reasons. Keith’s parents are not likely to be amenable. His relationship with his dad is already strained due to his continued assistance at his mother’s farm. Keith is due land from the family trust, which he could forfeit if he father is opposed to his lifestyle, and his mom might just kick him out if she finds out. Max doesn’t have the same issues. His parents have long known his orientation and don’t care at all, but he’s constantly on the move, developing real estate for his company. How can he ask a guy to settle down with him, when he’ll have to move every five or six months? Especially when Keith is pretty-much tied to tiny Pookataw Valley.

The connection between Keith and Max is very sweet, and soon more than they can just ignore. I was taken by Max’s revelations of how arousing it was to have a partner who was so masculine. He’d been used to nubile, hairless partners and Keith’s muscles, body hair and manly scent is unexpectedly appealing. I also got a laughing cramp when Keith encountered Max’s at-home waxing kit. Oh, man!

Because they are nearly the same age, Keith’s mom is thrilled that he is “friends” with Max, well, until the big reveal. As much as I detest when parents are not immediately accepting, I was struck by how simply real those scenes felt. And how crushing they were for both Max and Keith. I appreciated the way this story unfolded over several months, allowing for reconciliation—on many fronts. Keith is probably the bravest character I’ve read in a while. He has serious financial stakes to lose by coming out, and he makes a choice that a lot of people might not.

The progression of this relationship from casual to serious was really rewarding. There are some nice sexytimes and really tender moments. It’s a fun, quick read that can be finished in an afternoon.

I was not exactly bored, but certainly not thrilled in any way, shape or form for most of this book. Then suddenly at about 80% it was like I was reading a completely different book. Right about when Max accidentally to Keith's mom, Meghan.

description

I didn't have any connection to either Keith or Max, the story jumped too much in places, and it felt like there were chapters or scenes missing that would have fleshed it out better...

description

In fact, if I'm being honest, I actually actively disliked Keith for much of the story. All in all, wasn't a great read for me. Was mostly, "Meh" with it, and the end wasn't enough to save it.

I loved this book! The best written by this author so far. I liked the characters a lot, and I loved how naturally their relationship progressed from friends-with-benefits to boyfriends/lovers. It was very believable and I really appreciate there was no insta-love!

I also really like how different Keith and Max were, different backgrounds, different life styles, but none of that mattered when it came to how well they fit together. And I loved that epilogue, it was perfect!

This book could have been longer, especially because it felt... Unfinished?! And some of the situations could have been more fleshed-out, while some of the drama could have been dialed down.

So Keith is an in-the-closet goat-farmer working for/with his mum at her farm. His dad is a DOUCHE of the highest order, who cheated on Keith's mum and then cheated her out of almost everything when they split. As a fuck-you to the dad, she named her farm: The Horny Goat *snicker*. Keith dropped out of college to help her temporarily, and now 2 years later, he's still there.
Max is a real estate developer, who prefers to go from place to place, making sure the new development is on schedule and staying at the development, until he can move on again. He does not have a home-base, since his mum is also not the best example of how to make sure your kids grow up as well-adjusted individuals.
description

These two meet by happenstance and what follows is this weird push-pull-insta-thing, which is why this book should have been longer.
Keith wants Max. Then he doesn't. Then he does again. But now Max isn't sure it's a good idea. But okay, maybe a friends-with-benefits-thing, but after a few weeks Max thinks he's in full-on-love with Keith. And then Max comes out to Keith's mum and Jeebus!
description

It was just way too much drama on too few pages... And it irritated me, that we never got to see the ULTIMATE showdown where Keith told his dad where he could shove it! Because that man was a greedy, douchy, bullying SOB, and it would have done the story a few favors if the drama with Max and Keith was less and Keith stood up to his dad (and his mum).
It was funny once in a while, but it is limited how much drama, humor, drama, jeebus-shit, drama and kid-birthing (the goat-kind) you can cram into 120 pages without being way too superficial.

My Review:
This was a really fun read...just as fun as you would expect from that title. But this story wasn't all lighthearted. This book covers some pretty serious issues of coming out in a rural area...something that isn't always as easy as it sounds.

Keith went off to college and discovered that yep, he was definitely gay, before he had to come home and help his mom take care of her goat ranch after his father dumped her. He's basically given up on his dreams...all of them and certainly doesn't ever even consider coming out. That's just not something that's done in this small community with his overbearing father.

Max is a real estate developer who goes in and supervises the properties that his company is flipping. He's rarely in one place long and doesn't ever really hook up with anyone for more than a single night. He doesn't really understand Keith's issues with coming out. I love the way that Daisy Harris wrote this aspect of this story...Max really got to see why this was all so hard for Keith. No, homophobes aren't always hateful, judgmental jerks. Sometimes they just don't know because they haven't been exposed to someone who's gay...or, at least they don't realize that they have been. This whole story line was brilliantly done.

And poor Keith...he really didn't win much of a lottery with his parents and he's given up a lot to help and try to keep the peace. I felt so badly for him. He's definitely been screwed in this whole situation...and not in the fun way. But I liked him and Max together. They worked even though the circumstances they come from is so completely different.

Note: Call me petty, but I really would have liked one more scene with Keith sticking it to his jerk of a father. That situation is resolved, but I wanted a bit more...

This was really cute and sweet. I enjoyed seeing these two unlikely boys fall in love and find a way to make things work together. Everything wasn't coming up roses for Keith and he had to really work to find his way out of the closet and deal with even his own thoughts about being gay. All around though Max was very patient and understanding. I think these boys feelings came over them unexpectedly and they handled it well.

I loved the backdrop of this story. Having grown up not to far from where this story takes place, only one state over, and in exactly that kind of small town it totally reminded me of home. I know precisely how the gossips of that world work and having grown up in a tourist town how much the locals can resent the intrusion of the "Big Money Deals." My town would have HATED Keith's dad and his out for the money ways. Most small towns would say any development is bad development. ;)

Very cute story and not any where near as kinky as I was expecting from such a title. Though the reasons behind the naming of the ranch certainly made me giggle.

I admit I bought this book solely because of the title. Because let's be honest, who doesn't want to read a book with a title like that?!

There are a few spelling and grammar mistakes that irritated me. Other than that it's a cute funny, sometimes weird, relatively angst free read.

Very sweet and adorable read. Considering I’m fairly familiar with that part of the country and small ranching/farming communities, I think Keith and Max were lucky not to have some serious trouble in coming out. I believe the author took some liberties there but it just increased the sweetness of the story.

Thank you to my dear friend, Jo Peterson, for recommending this!

City Slicker at the Horny Goat Ranch is the charming story of Keith Kelley a goat rancher who lives at home with his mother, and helps run the ranch. One day real estate developer Max Levin shows up and infuses much life into Keith’s humdrum world. The story is told in third person from both Keith’s and Max’s pov.

City Slicker at the Horny Goat Ranch

By: Daisy Harris

Max definitely fits the City Slicker impression. Dressed in a fancy suit, fancy shoes, driving a fancy car without snow tires in snow country, and stuck in a snow bank on the side of a deserted road. When Keith stops to help this guy he wonders why. What is the attraction? But after Max sits in Keith’s truck for a ride to the garage, Keith finds his attraction to this out of place city slicker so strong it bothers him to his core. Keith couldn’t allow himself the indulgence of anything sexual with this guy. But the attraction is too strong to deny it.

City Slicker is a well woven story of love, camouflaged as country rudeness. Both Keith and Max know there is more than meets the eye, but when Max confronts Keith, he receives the cold shoulder, making him wonder what is really happening. What Max doesn’t understand is why Keith would hide his sexuality. Max is out and proud that he is gay. To him, anyone who hides who he is – is not worth the effort. But he wants Keith and doesn’t know how to avoid that desire.

All too often we find stories of people who are forced to live a lie, to hide who they are, and to anguish over the life they are living. Homophobia, whether in the big city, small country town, or individual family has yet to be abolished. In some situations it is very smart to hide who you are, your life may depend on doing just that.

This book dug into the country environment where being a rancher meant you had to be a man, a strong woman loving man. Harris walked me through that country life from Keith’s point of view, letting me see the innuendo, subtle comments, and looks of the people in the little valley town. My first impression was quickly overturned as I began to understand why Keith might want to stay deeply in his self manufactured closet. It was clear!

Harris also allowed me to see that very same valley town from Max’s point of view. To him, this is a one stoplight town which he intends to make into a vacation destination. To him, either Keith grows a set or he is doomed to live life as a lie. But he sees the problems first hand and begins to understand. The issue – can he continue to want a man who is hiding?

I gave City Slicker 4 stars and a heat index of Three Flames.

There are only a few authors that I can honestly say I get excited when they have a new release, Daisy Harris is one of them. I’ve never read anything by her that I didn’t thoroughly enjoy. Keith and Max and their love story didn’t disappoint. It was sweet, country, a bit sassy, and the right amount of opposites attract.

Born and raised in Pookataw, Idaho a mostly rural and very country town Keith has choose to stay in the closet and not ever let anyone know that he favors the company of men. On occasion he goes into Boise for a random one night hook up. It may not be ideal but this is what has worked for Keith since he returned home after a couple years away at college to help his mother with her goat farm.

Living out of boxes and traveling the country flipping real estate is what Max does. His job takes him everywhere for just a few months at a time. His current job has landed him in Podunk, Idaho and a ditch. His shiny Mercedes is not happy about the ditch but his rescuer in a rusty Ram may be exactly what he needs to help kill some time while he is getting this property developed and sold. The only problem is that Max soon realizes he doesn’t want to leave this project, more importantly he doesn’t want to leave the rancher who has his heart.

Like I said this is a sweet country romance between two very different men. The road to happily ever after wasn’t a smooth one. How could it be? One man is in the closet and the other never knew what the confine of that closet was like. One man knows where home is and the other one is just now discovering that home isn’t an address but the arms of the sexy closeted rancher that he can’t seem to get enough of. City Slicker at the Horny Goat Ranch was simply a great read for me.

With a title like “City Slicker at Horny Goat Ranch” I expected the story to be a little silly, but it definitely was not. It has humor, make no mistake, but this is a well-crafted book about opposites attracting and gay men coming out in rural Idaho. When Max, the gay city slicker, arrives in wintry Idaho dressed in his LA skinny jeans and driving a Mercedes you might expect him to be kind of the buffoon of the story. Not at all! Max is well educated, knows his business, is confident in his sexuality, and winds up the hero of the story.
Keith is the heir to ranch land if he can keep his warring divorced parents from squandering or giving away his inheritance. His mother runs a goat ranch adjacent to land his father owns and named her ranch Horny Goat Ranch as a dig at him. Keith’s father has kept a secret from Keith about his inheritance that already has had serious consequences in Keith’s past and could have a dire effect on Keith’s future.
On top of that, Keith has a huge secret of his own. He is afraid for his parents to find out who he really is for fear his father will use it against him and his mother’s ranch business will suffer consequences from local bigots. Max keeps his own sexual orientation on the down low for a while but when he accidentally comes out to one person two and two are put together and Keith has to answer some questions.
In an hilarious scene Keith makes an announcement in a very public place that puts his future in jeopardy and his relationship with Max in doubt. I loved these characters, including the goats, especially Lassie. This is a book you can read in one sitting and enjoy it with just enough angst to make it interesting. I highly recommend it as a sweet romance that really does say love is love.

One of my favorites from Daisy Harris, who somehow always manages to pull me in with her characters.

I adored Max.

Liked Keith too, a lot.

They were wonderful together.

What surprised me, Keith seemed way more mature than his twenty-two-years. He talked and acted more like a thirty-five-year old man, sad and lonely and prickly. Haha. I think Max was a few years older but definitely came across as younger, fresh and well, happier I guess. Which I totally get. Whatever, it was all good with me.

Now, how about more, please?

I hesitated a bit with this title while "rifling" through Ms Harris's backlist.

I don't often indulge in country boys with ranches, horses and all that. It's not one of my most favored themes, especially when the guys are all bitter and closeted and ashamed of being who they are.

Glad it wasn't all that bad with Keith and his town. Still the being out issue and fear of whatever happens after was a big, big part of the story.

That epilogue was the most fun I've ever read, btw. Nice touch.

This was cute and sweet. Keith was closeted and tried to keep all of his relations out of town. When Max temporarily moves next door, his resolve fell apart. They were great together, and it was great to see Keith finally find happiness. The drama with Keith's family was a little weird, and I thought that the story moved along with weird transitions in time where it was a bit off-putting (it seemed like months passed without any transition from one scene to another). Regardless of that, the characters and story was enjoyable, and I'm glad I took a chance on this author that I've never read before.

The interesting part was this is the only book I have read where the setting is a goat farm. The title is eye catching.

It chugged along prettily. Did not feel anything for the MCs. The book did not hold my entire attention not was it a wall banger.

The resolution felt too rushed. But it was a long enough book where for long stretches nothing happened.
