Bound in Darkness

Rate this book
After drinking from the fountain of immortality along with his brothers, Maxum is condemned by the gods to be entombed in the earth. Even though he has now been granted a reprieve by day, each night he is buried anew, his rock-hard body immobilized, his bones crushed by the pressure. When he emerges, his body heals, but his spirit remains scarred. There is only one way for Maxum to be completely free: he must kill the god who cursed him. The task will require tremendous power, so Maxum must gather talismans to equip him for the battle. To help him on this quest, Maxum approaches the alluring Airianne and strikes a bargain as tempting as it is audacious. A skilled thief, Airianne could be a valuable ally, if only Maxum could trust her. Will this stealthy seductress also try to steal his heart, or will their boldness end up getting them both buried? Contains mature themes.

What’s a girl to do? She just wanted to feed herself and get her horse out of the barn. So what if she picks the worst mark ever; a mark that has been cursed by a god. Now she just has to prove her worth as a thief, keep an unthinkable bargain and come out with her heart in tacked.

Maxum has been cursed by a god and the only way to free himself is to become a god killer. Searching for artifacts to help himself rid the curse, Maxum is robbed of one such artifact by a sexy thief named, Airianne.

Airianne convinces Maxum that she should join his all male crew to help steal the items he requires…and so starts the journey that thrust them together.

Lots of sensual tension, the heroes have lots of imperfections and a scary as heck antagonist bring Bound in Darkness to life. Overall, it is the ignitable chemistry between Airianne and Maxum that will keep the Frank fans riveted.

I did struggle a little with the characters likability. But once I hit the half way point, I found myself hooked.

This is the last story of the cursed brother and the epilogue ties the series up nicely. It gives you a taste of each of the participants lives and wraps the series up nicely.

I received this ARC copy of Bound in Darkness from Random House Publishing Group - Ballantine in exchange for a honest review. This book is set to publish November 24, 2015.

So, what do you think happens when a skilled thief, tiny and feisty as all heck tries to steal from an immortal on a mission to kill a god? In fairness to Airianne, she thought he was just another mark, easy pickings as she high-tailed it out of town to turn in her bounty for cold hard coin. How could she know he would be there waiting for her, more than a little, um, livid? Two volatile personalities, neither willing to give an inch and one gang of ragtag thieves make an unlikely journey to find artifacts of great power so Maxum can be the last brother freed from his curse. His only way out is death to the god who has cursed him, but how can one immortal human take on a god and survive? With a little magic, a little love and a lot of luck, Maxum may get his freedom, but at what cost? Follow their journey as Maxum and company, along with their latest addition, Airianne travel the world, looting from dragons and more for what could be Maxum’s last battle. Will he find that Airianne is his secret weapon, his greatest power against a crazed god? Or will she be his Achilles Heel when he needs his strength the most?

Jacquelyn Frank’s Bound in Darkness reads like a fantasy adventure as each character plays their role, whether it is to cause conflict or unintentional lust and emotions. Follow their journey, sleep under the stars, in the snow and bathe in an icy lake! No? How about grabbing a comfy chair by a warm fire and live the adventure vicariously through the words of Jacquelyn Frank? Chuckle at the dialogue, the game of tug of war with heartstrings and feel the heat of sensual chemistry as this tale winds down to close out the Immortal Brothers series. Great ending! Great characters! Amazing journey and what an ending! Didn’t see that one coming!

Well this book marks the conclusion to the saga about four cursed immortal brothers and their fight to simply be free. I'm going to confess that I wasn't totally blown away by the first book Cursed by Fire but the subsequent stories have been truly imaginative and easily captured my imagination. It's been an unraveling as each brother sought out a way to be truly free of the insidious tortures they've been forced to suffer but Maxum has a totally different approach. No longer trapped but given a temporary reprieve ( well of sorts!) Maxum doesn't intend to honour the Gods but kill the one who cursed him!
Now if you ever liked Tolkien or even the more recent GOT then you will surely enjoy this adventure set in fantasy. Not only do we have a medieval type landscape , along with Gods and Goddesses but the author sprinkles more mythical creatures along the way. In a previous book she gave us Wyverns but she ramps up the ante here with full blown dragons! Orc's, Mages and even the odd Elf all make an appearance which really helps set the scene. Maxum has amassed a happy little band of treasure hunters to follow him but none realise quite what his mission truly is . Into this set up comes Arrianne, a thief who makes the mistake of choosing Maxum as her next target! He does what he does best and uses his brain to hunt her down and retrieve the magical amulet she stole from him . Now this leaves Arrianne in dire straits and she convinces Maxum that he could use her invaluable talents. What follows is simply divine fun as Maxum fully realises Arrianne is out of the frying pan and into the fire with him! Oh he's a little bit of a trickster but his underhand tactics just added to the excitement as the chemistry they share keeps simmering ! A motley crew of supporting characters are tagging along but not everyone is charmed by Arrianne.
Well I can say no more lest I ruin the fun for other readers. Ms Frank is such a talented author and I always find myself believing in her romances . She brings a strong connection to her leading couple here and I really felt that they were equals who fitted together so well. So yes I'm a happy bunny and I'm so glad I persevered with this series. A surprise ending with a lovely epilogue that brought all four brothers back together . If you enjoy paranormal romance them Jacqueline Frank should certainly be on your list of authors to check out.

Celebrating a recent bit of good luck, the hero and his crew are drinking in a bar when the heroine comes over. She is dressed in men’s clothing but to the hero, she is all woman- and she wants him. They play the seductive game and flirt a bit before he realizes that she’s has left and taken his amulet with her! Furious and a bit embarrassed he tracks her down and takes it back-threatening to call attention to the authorities if she makes a fuss. What he didn’t expect was her to plead with him for a job.

The heroine’s life has been a hard one. Her mother dying when she was just 11 years old has forced the heroine into the life of thievery and though she is decent enough at the profession she always fears getting caught and she only steals from those who are able to give. Without the payment, she was going to get for that amulet she is without funds to survive so she throws herself on the hero’s mercy. One look at him and she knows he is dangerous and mysterious but he’s a good man. And he can use a woman of her talents. He takes her on and though she is obviously not used to taking orders, she’s going to have to learn because he is the law in this little group and what he says goes. And he’s used to having to explain himself-she does have a horrible habit of asking a lot of questions. Like where they are going, questioning his logic and asking why he disappears every night for a few hours only to return looking beat up.

The hero is a private person and doesn’t share his feelings or his thoughts with others. The rest of his crew know his habits and don’t question him but the heroine is something different. The hero doesn’t have time for a woman- he must collect all the God made weapons that will allow him to kill a God. Thee God which cursed him and his brothers to suffer immortal lives while being suffocated and crushed by the earth every night. He has the amulet to give him immortal life, unable to be killed or harmed and the sword which will cut through anything.

Together with his crew they travel the world seeking hidden treasure-their only guide, the ancient songs that speak of legend and mystery. He promises his crew coin and he take the weapon for himself. The heroine is a complication to this plan. Not only is she disobedient and defensive…. but she is entirely too lovely for her own good. He enjoyed teasing her as it’s easy to do and the fire and passion that comes with her anger is a beautiful sight. He makes her share his bed every night but does nothing to initiate sex, much to her peace of mind and confusion. He knows she must come to him else he never truly have her for his own. When she throws a hissy fit and leaves, he missed her. See, his calm is severely damaged when it comes to her. He’s having trouble keeping his distance emotionally. They travel the world, seeking treasures and all the while, despite their banter and mock feud, they find themselves falling for one another. When the heroine discovers the hero’s plans to kill a God as well as his curse, thanks in part to the heroine’s new dagger that allows only truth to be spoken in its presence, she is horrified. He will certainly die. How can he imagine it a wise idea to fight a God? Still, no matter her fear for him and the pain she suffers at the idea of him being taken from her, she still does everything she can to help him in his quest. The hero realizes that he’s stronger with her by his side, not weaker as he feared. She is capable and witty and without her he would be lost. When the time comes for the battle, he knows he must succeed in doing the unthinkable else be destroyed himself.

I simply adored this book. From the first page to the last. The heroine was not at all what I was expecting. I was worried she’d be that seductive fem fatal type but instead she was childish at times and altogether quite funny. Especially when it comes to the hero. He knows exactly how to push her buttons and make her want to scream and hit him. She was also quite a reliable fighter in a battle and was responsible for saving the crew on many occasions but she did complain a lot and made it a habit of questioning the hero’s logic. She was never completely submissive but she wasn’t obviously independent either which I loved. Nothing worse than a chick who thinks she knows everything only to discover she endangers herself and others often because of her ignorance. Her relationship with the hero was very comical and super sweet because under the sexual tension and arguments was a deep craving and understanding of one another. The hero was fantastic. He decided to rebel against his curse, unlike his brothers. He decided to kill the God that cursed them and set out to retrieve the things needed to do so. He was extremely confident and calm in every situation. You had the feeling that he could handle anything and much to the heroine’s chagrin, kept quiet about how exactly he planned to achieved these goals of him- he kept quiet about what his plans even were! The action and adventure were exciting and had the feel of an Indiana Jones/ Lord of the Rings movie. The side characters made for a lovely supporting cast and each one added to the layer of the story whether for the worst or better. My only complaint? I was eagerly waiting for the final battle but it a bit of a letdown, honestly. I was expecting something epic, I mean he’s trying to kill a God! But it was far shorter than it should have been considering the buildup. But overall, I was pleased with the conclusion of the series and I thought each book was fantastic and certainly unique and exciting.

Best of the tetralogy

This fourth installment is was a high fantasy quest with a very active romance entangled within it. Loved the interaction between the main characters and the interaction between the secondary characters. Some of the secondaries were very memorable. I am a sucker for high fantasy, and when steamy romance is added I am all in. Ms. Frank saved the best for last. Outstanding read!

If you are looking for a fun enjoyable light book with a cute story line, look no further. I have enjoyed this series and liked how each couple has their own specific "characterization" to make them unique and different. This being said, they are all very similar in manner as far as the insta-love, I've never felt this before thing goes. Still, I liked the whole journey and stealing and fighting gods. That totally rocked.

**Spoilers**

I did Not like Airianne, the main female lead.
She was pushy, nosy and bossy with too many dang questions.
She was also arrogant and cocky considering that she had no money and needed Maxum's help.
The entire journey she acted as though Maxum "made" her join his group when actually,
she begged him to travel with him and his group.
He normally traveled with four other men and had been doing so for some time, yet,
it seems like she is trying to come between them.
I do not like Kilon hitting her but I did understand his frustrations with her.
I wanted to hit her at times too.
Ari was the new person in the group, she should have hung back, laid low, tried to fit in, and
Not antagonize members of the group, particularly, Kilon.
I know his personality was much to be desired, however,
he got along just fine with the others in the group.

I was interested in Maxum's travel companions, their journey and the treasure hunting
However, when it came to the "romantic" scenes, I cringed, because it all felt forced.
Maxum did not trust Airianne with information about him and she did not trust him as well.
All she did throughout the story was follow him around, complaining, being snarky and biting
at his heels like an annoying Chihuahua dog.

Out of the four brothers cursed, I was hoping that one would find a strong warrior type woman to mate with.
I mean, the eldest brother married a princess, the youngest brother married a slave who has some weird bond to a dragon-like creature and the third brother mated with some selkie / mermaid like creature.
And, now, we have Maxum with this weak sniveling thief following him around..

I repeat, Airianne was arrogant, self absorbed and combative for the majority of the story,
then, the last few chapters, she becomes all lovey-dovey with Maxum and her sudden personality transplant gave me whip lash.

I did Not like that Kilon was made into of the bad guy.
I understand his feelings and animosity towards Airianne since it was an all male group thieves
but for Kilon to turn against the others, just didn't make any sense and created unnecessary drama.
Fighting the god, Sabo, should have been enough.

Another issue that I had with this book and the entire series is that...
Maxum was told that he could create demi-gods.
He turned Airianne into of a demi-god but NOT his brothers?
That made no sense, to make a demigod:
"“She must be a proven warrior. She must have had grand adventures and done great things. She
must have acted in the name of a god.”" _Chapter 27
Dethan can definitely check off everything on that list and then some.
Jaykem and Garreth were both still immortal BUT
Dethan was turned back into of a Mortal in book one.
I can NOT believe that Maxum is just going to let his brother, Dethan,
grow old and die while Maxum and the other two brothers live on indefinitely, WTF?
In the epilogue Dethan states:
"The war with the gods was over, but he would keep his agreement with Weysa
and battle in her name until he was no longer able to. Until age and infirmity ruled him.
Until he was ready to spend his golden years surrounded by his wife and his many children."

They all traveled to the Fountain of the Gods "together"
The brothers all drank from the fountain of Immortality "together".
They were all cursed "together".
See the theme here? The brothers being Together...
The fact that all of the brothers except Dethan is still Immortal is a poor over sight from the author.

I could go on with more things that annoyed me and made no sense but what is the point?
I was disappointed with this book and the entire series.

Like I said about the previous book,
Did Jacquelyn Frank really write these books or was a Ghost Writer involved?

Overall Rating: 4.5 Rockin’ ★★★★☆

In the conclusion to The Immortal Brothers series, Jacquelyn Frank creates a fascinating world in her final novel, Bound In Darkness. This is Maxum’s story of his attempts to find a way to break the curse placed on him when he and his three brothers enter Olympus to drink from the fountain of eternal life and gain immortality. Ms. Frank’s has a way of creating characters that sizzle as they move through the pages of her novels. Although each book in this series followed the brothers as they try to find release and peace, they are totally unique in the approach used to find resolution to their plight. Read and enjoy Airianne and Maxum’s journey to find the end to the brother’s quest!

Eternal suffering from being buried underground is the price Maxum pays nightly for his part in pursuing immortality. He has finally found a way to break the vicious cycle of entombment and resurrection. With his followers he is on the trail of the talismans that will allow him to not only kill the god that cursed him but also free him from the soul destroying cycle. After rising and healing from his excruciating burial, he meets a woman that intrigues him, Airianne. But this woman is more than she seems to be, can she help him finally free himself from his curse? Or will she be the cause of his continued eternal damnation? She is a thief! Or is she?

Ms. Franks is a remarkably talent writer. Her words paint pictures in the readers mind to the point that they feel they are inside the story. The way she creates and unfolds her storyline is extraordinary and keeps the reader so involved that they cannot put the book down until it is finished. Her books sizzle with sexual tension and action packed drama. This is a MUST read and addition to anyone’s paranormal library.

To be completely free of his curse, Maxum has to kill the god who cursed him so he needs all the help he can get including the magical amulet stolen by the earthy wench who seduced him in this adventurous paranormal romance.

Arianne is a skilled thief so when she’s caught between a rock and a hard place she strikes a bargain and the reader can’t help but get caught up in the adventure as Maxum, Arianne and their small band go treasure hunting. The chemistry between Maxum and Arianne is hot and steamy but the relationship is a bit volatile as both are determined to do things their way causing quite a few heated encounters that add spice and quite a few chuckles. These strong compelling characters have lots of charisma and are not afraid to use it in order to get what they want and the steady to fast paced, smooth flowing plot thrills readers with lots of suspense, adventure and romance.

Adrenaline pumping excitement builds throughout the story as Maxum leads the band on several dangerous and deadly quests to find treasure and of course Maxum’s hidden agenda adds some extra excitement to those quests as well. The story also has a multitude of other intriguing elements that add to the tension and dangers of their journey, like adversity among the band members, goddesses, demi gods, weredragons and Maxum’s curse. The well written scenes and details make this adventure come alive for the readers which makes it easy for them to become a part of the story and the intriguing events ensure that there is never a dull moment.

The ending to the four brothers’ saga is not what I expected, it is in fact so much better this way, it also made Maxum’s story quite a bit different that the other three and brought about closure on the war between the gods. I was completely caught up in Maxum and Arianne’s story from beginning to end and the epilogue as it made for a perfect conclusion to the Immortal Brothers series.

“They couldn’t afford another close call like this. He couldn’t afford it. Because he knew one thing and one thing clearly. He would not die without having known her. His quest could wait. He would put it aside for a short time just to have the time to be with her.” – Bound in Darkness

**advance reader copy received through NetGalley*

This final volume in Frank’s Immortal Brothers series was a strong finish for an entertaining storyline. The final brother, Maxum, was punished for his hubris by being crushed in the earth. After years of punishment, his brothers manage to secure some freedom for him, but he is unable to let go of his deep feelings of hatred for his jailer. On a mad quest to take out the god Sabo, Maxum does not have time for any distractions that go beyond passing entertainment. He definitely does not have time for a vixen thief.

Airianne just needed to score enough to keep her and her horse fed and safe through the winter. Little did she know that her mark came with a bit more bite and wile than the usual victim. After he tracks her down, Airi scrambles to work out an agreement that will keep her alive and help her gain the riches she needs to give up her life of crime. Just a bit of work and an amazing payoff, then she is done…with crime and danger and with Maxum. The only problem is that Maxum is definitely interested in becoming more than business partners, and she is not sure if she can keep her emotions in check…can he?

Bound in Darkness has adventure, highly dislike-able villains, and imperfect heroes. The action is pleasant, the sensual build is heated, and the romantic scenes are smoking!

This is book 4 in the Immortal Brother series from author Jacquelyn Frank. This is Maxum & Arianne‘s story and this is the finale in the series.
Maxium is no longer trapped like his brothers were but nor is he free—he is given a temporary reprieve (he has now been granted a reprieve by day, each night he is buried anew). Maxium decides to kill the God that cursed him. Maxium knows this will need a lot of powers so he goes on a quest- so off he goes to gather talismans to equip him for the battle. But on this quest, one of the artifacts is stolen by this beautiful thief named Arianne.
Arianne is a thief who is quite skilled and she is just needed to take enough to get her on her way and to feed her horse through the winter but she didn’t know what she took was the mother lode. She also didn’t know that Maxium was quite harsh yet so handsome. Maxium tracked her down and wanted back what she stole. She got him to take her on after some bargaining and then she is going to be done with her previous life of crime and she will be on the straight and narrow…but after seeing Maxium, well.. after being with him, will she be able to let him go?
There are twists and turns along with dangerous plots within. I loved the romance that brewed with the MC. I was sad to see the end of the series but I enjoyed the series and I enjoyed the sassy Arianne and the handsome Maxium. The chemistry was definitely present and accounted for in this story. I cannot wait to see what the author has planned for next.

My rating: 4.5 stars ****

The final story in the series…finally Maxum & Arianne's story. If you haven’t read the others, you can follow this story without any issues, but reading the previous three make this one richer. If you love fantasy and romance, then this is an imaginative novel you shouldn’t miss with its GoT and Lord of the Rings feel without the tricky dialogue of Tolkien. There’s a lot going on in this book, but this author does a great job with the details and character development.
What I enjoyed most was the H/h who just work together (so much more than those in the previous book), although the first half of the book for me had some rough going with likability of the characters, especially the hero. But if you make it to the halfway point, then everything comes together and the story flies to the end.
There are steamy moments, but not too hot. The series is cleanly wrapped up with a sweet epilogue. No spoilers here.

I received an ARC of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Here we are in the fourth and final book of the Immortal Brothers series. I have read this book from the very beginning, and while I had hesitations in the first book, I've always found the main story arc to be unique and interesting. I am so happy that I kept on reading until the very end. I mean, I think this fourth book is the best one in the series.

Our heroine is a skilled thief. You know how I like a kickass heroine. Our hero is an imperfect man who only wants to be free. You also know how I loved flawed heroes. The chemistry between the main characters wasn't immediately evident, at least that's how I felt. However, as the book went on, I slowly got hooked into the story and the romance.

I think that Jacquelyn Frank did a wonderful job in closing out this series. This book was able to neatly wrap up the entire series, and I just love when that happens. It's a little sad that the series has come to its end, but it's also a great thing to have it end on this note.

I LOVED THIS SERIES!!!

I looked forward to each brother and their stories since i stumbled across the first book. Maxum's story was seriously an amazing ending to this wonderful tale of 4 brothers.

Maxum was fair and quietly alpha. Ari was strong but not a pain in the ass. Together they were loveable. I did get annoyed when Maxum kept ignoring Ari's warning about that other dude but in Maxum's defense she was kinda manipulating him with their attraction. There was never a dull moment in this story. I sorta want to know what happened to the other two guys in the group and if they found what's his face's mother but it doesn't bother me enough to get pissy.

Story 4 (the extra star is for the whole series)
Narrator - hot damn he sounds sexy. I am totally gonna stalk him on audible and pray he has more romance books coming out.

This novel was gifted to me by Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Here in the 4th and final novel in the Immortal Brothers series, we find JF back on tract after an unspired 3rd novel. This conclusion to the series reads more like high fantasy in the Tolkien/GOT feel with so much going on it is a much quicker read than earlier books in the series.

The connection and chemistry between the H/h is so much better developed in this novel and it was nice to feel the anger and frustration of our hero. Over all these two really fit and were a great final couple. The series was tied up nicely and the epilogue was wonderful and sweet. I think this was the best of the 4 books...but stilled liked the Nightwalker series the best. 4 star read for me.

Interesting read full full of suspense and heart-stopping scenes! The way the story started is good and as the story goes, the twist and turns get more interesting and exciting. The characters are also good, even the minor ones. What I love about this book is that the suspense is great! I love how it kept my interest throughout the story. There may be times that I want to kick the heroine but still I love her. =) Ms. Jacquelyn did it again.

Parts of this were unreal but you have to remember....it is a story of gods. The H was strong, handsome, loyal, but suffered still. Then he sees the h. He is shocked that she was so “bold”. Once captured, she remained with the group. She won the loyalty of all but one of Maxium’s followers. They faced every trial and worked together to achieve the goal. But, are they prepared for the results? This was a good ending to the four brothers’ story. HEA.

Another Glossary! Yay! I enjoyed this a bit more than the previous in the series. Maxum and Airianne are interesting and engaging characters and the story line flows nicely. The ending was the most satisfying of the entire series, not just because of Maxum and Airianne ending up together, but the result of the final battle.
Very well done.

REVIEW: BOUND IN DARKNESS is the fourth and final installment in Jacquelyn Frank’s adult IMMORTAL BROTHERS paranormal, fantasy romance series focusing on four brothers cursed by the gods and goddesses, in their search for immortality.

Two hundred years earlier, four brothers went in search of the waters of Immortality and upon the discovery drank from the forbidden streams. The gods and goddesses were angered and cursed each brother to suffer eternal damnation and pain. This is Maxum and Airianne’s storyline. BOUND IN DARKNESS can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Maxum and Arianne) BOUND IN DARKNESS follows Maxum as he sets out on a quest to destroy Sabo-the god of pain and suffering-and the god who condemned Maxum to an endless cycle of being entombed and crush within the bowels of the earth. Maxum, along with his rag-tag band of forgotten warriors, traverses the lands in search of five artifacts said to be imbued with magical qualities-qualities Maxum needs to defeat the god of pain and suffering. A beautiful thief will take off with one of Maxum’s prized possessions, and in the ensuing weeks Arianne will become a full fledge member of Maxum’s group, helping him to defeat the god who has destroyed his life.

Jacquelyn Frank’s BOUND IN DARKNESS takes much of its’ characteristics from Tolkien’s THE LORD OF THE RINGS. The author combines archers, elves, Orcs, mages, dragons and magical rings of invisibility; add the possibility of a talking and walking tree, and a final battle between the gods wherein our hero becomes a god himself to reign over the world and all of its pain and suffering. Even the journey from town to town becomes a quest into the unknown.

BOUND IN DARKNESS is a tale of adventure; a quest for power and magic; a journey that will end the suffering of the fourth and final brother but not before he must sacrifice his ‘immortal, human’ life for that of omnipotent power. The fourth installment in Jacquelyn Frank’s IMMORTAL BROTHERS series follows a different path than the previous three installments wherein our hero is not tasked with fighting a war but brings the war unto himself. In this, BOUND IN DARKNESS, can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. The premise and basic outline are familiar but entertaining; the characters a mixed assortment of the good, bad and ugly; the happily ever after a welcome relief. There is plenty of action; a continuous saga in search for the unobtainable; and a romance that pushes our hero to both a lover and protector.

Bound in Darkness is the fourth and final book in the Immortal Brothers series by Jacquelyn Frank. It is currently scheduled for release on November 24 2015. I highly recommend reading this series in order, but I think determined readers could read this as a stand alone.

After drinking from the fountain of immortality along with his brothers, Maxum is condemned by the gods to be entombed in the earth. Even though he has now been granted a reprieve by day, each night he is buried anew, his rock-hard body immobilized, his bones crushed by the pressure. There is only one way for Maxum to be completely free: He must kill the god who cursed him. The task will require tremendous power, so Maxum embarks on a quest to gather talismans to equip him for the battle. Then an earthy wench seduces him and steals one of his magical amulets, but he catches her. Finding herself between a rock and a hard place, she strikes a bargain. The beautiful and alluring Airianne is a skilled thief, and she can help him in his acquisition of the talismans. Will this stealthy seductress also try to steal his heart, or will their boldness end up getting them both buried?

Bound in Darkness is a satisfying read, both as a series conclusion and as a romance. Maxum is angry and bitter, but still manages to be a fair and compassionate man. He does not want to admit it, or show it too often, but it is clearly part of his personality. Airianne knows well not to trust or depend on others, she has been on her own from a young age and has turned to theft for survival. When she steals from Maxum she finds herself in a new kind of trouble. They strike a bargain and she joins his group, much to the disgust of one fellow member. She makes herself valuable, as she struggles to ignore the attraction between her and Maxum. The quest and the relationship between the pair are perilous on several levels, that the characters adapt to meet the challenges. I really liked their interactions and the tension that was constant through out the book as the crew struggled and changed as well. I was eagerly turning pages to see what would happen next, and when Maxum might share his secrets and goals with Airianne. A solid read with high action and great characters.

Bound in Darkness is a satisfying conclusion to the series, and better than the third installment (at least as far as I am concerned). It still is not quite up to my expectations of Frank, but it is very close.

Jacqueline Frank is one of my long time favorite authors. I very much enjoyed the previous books in this series and looked forward to this final installment of the series. I had a difficult time with the first half plus of this book, however, primarily because I didn't like Airianne, or "Airi" She is variously described as oppositional, defensive, quick tempered, confrontational and annoying. The negative aspects of her personality for me were overplayed and tiresome. Additionally, the story evolves slowly, but thankfully, in the second half of the book, we get to see a different side of her, a softer side, and learn why she is so defensive. We also learn more about Maxum and the pace quickens and suspense builds as he nears the end of his quest.
Maxum is the fourth and final brother who was cursed by the gods to be released from full time torture. His amended punishment is to be crushed by soil and rocks deep within the earth each night only from dark till the juquil hour. The story begins two years after he leaves his brothers to go on a quest to end the torment he endures each night by gathering artifacts that he believes will help him defeat Sabo, God of Pain and Suffering, the god who will never release him from his punishment. He leads a group of men who help him in his quest: Doisy, an irreverent cleric and healer; Dru, a shy spirit mage; Kyno, a protective, lumbering half orc; and Kilon, a mean misogynist, but a skilled archer.
Airi enters the picture when she picks Maxum's pocket, stealing an artifact he recently acquired. She escapes, but Maxum intercepts her the next day and rather than turn her over to the authorities, they strike a bargain. She can travel with him in return for certain services. Airi is left with no choice but to join him, but questions and opposes everything. She has convinced Maxum that a thief could be a helpful addition to his group and proves her worth on their next venture--to everyone but the deadly Kilon, who hates everything about her and has dark secrets of his own.

I took a chance in reading Bound in Darkness. It is my first book in the Immortal Brothers series for me but the cover looked good and the blurb I found intriguing. Immortals, gods, quests, it’s got all the makings of a good story.

As much as I enjoyed this book I do feel a bit tricked. It has a nice soft feel to it and Airianne is anything but soft. She’s a skilled thief and has been living on her own for a while. She also picked the wrong person to steal from; one very angry Maxum. He manages to recover back what she has stolen. To save her own hide, she convinces Maxum she would be a benefit to his merry team. Maxum agrees and takes her own.

I really enjoyed the chemistry between Maxum and Airianne. Despite his angry with the gods, I found him to have a devilish sense of humor. Airianne was fairly spunky and was able to give it back to him as well. Her constant who/what/why questions and not following Maxum along blindly on his quests to retrieve talismans had me laughing. There is the bonus of all the sexual tension and teasing that really kept things rolling along. Add into that mix are a slew of interesting secondary characters, mainly Maxum’s crew. From the charming to the crass, these no so merry men made insured there was never a dull moment. All the action, adventure and characters combined together, give a most satisfying ending Bound in Darkness.

This second book by author Jacquelyn Frank however, it is ironically also the second book time I have picked up the last book in the series. Knowing this was a series and picking up the last book doesn’t always work out well. This time around, I had no problem with the characters or the story line. Bound in Darkness worked very well for me as a stand-alone and at no time did I feel lost. Of course, I know how the Immortal Brothers now but I think it’s worth going back and reading the series from the beginning.

I received this book from the JeepDiva for the express purposes of an honest review. The opinions and rating of this review are solely mine and in no way was I compensated.

This is the last book in the series. You do not have to read the others to understand this book but, you will love it even more if you do.

Maxum is the last of the brothers that drank from the fountain of youth and was punished by the gods for it. Each of them suffered a different type of punishment. Maxum's fate is to be swallowed up by the earth and crushed over and over again every evening.

The god that gave Maxum his punishment is not one to be won over like the ones the punished his brothers. Mainly because his god is the god of pain and suffering and he enjoys it too much. So, Maxum begins his quest to find various talisman to help him in his battle to kill the god and free himself.

He is feeling very good about the talisman he has acquired and is celebrating when he meets Airianne. She somehow manages to steal the talisman away from him. Her only thought is to sell it for enough money to get through the winter. She has been on her own for a very long time and trusts no one.

When Maxum realizes she stole his talisman he is very angry but also impressed that she was able to fool him. He gathers up his band of men and goes after her.

When he catches up to her he offers her a place with him as his thief. He is thinking of the way she can help him acquire the talisman and she is thinking of the money she can make so she never has to steal again. Neither one wants to admit the attraction that exists between them.

This begins their journey together to obtain the various talisman and free Maxum from his curse. You will enjoy the interactions between the two of them and the way "Ari" finds her place in the group. This book has some steamy parts, suspense, a bad guy in their immediate group that you really want to find a not so happy ending, and a love story. I thoroughly enjoyed this conclusion of the series and look forward to the next book Jacquelyn Frank writes.

I was given a copy in exchange for an honest review.

We have been on some outstanding adventures. And met same extraordinary men and the women they love. However, as we all know good things must come to an end.

Bound in Darkness the conclusion to Jacquelyn Frank The Immortal Brothers saga we must also say farewell.

After drinking from the fountain of immortality along with his brothers, Maxum was condemned by the gods to be entombed in the earth. Even after suffering his torchers he come to the conclusion that there is only one way to be set free and that is to finally kill the God who cursed him. However, before he could go on the suicide mission he must gather power and strength to beat a God.

My Take: Jacquelyn Frank took me back to my younger years with this book; tell this day I still recall Dungeon and Dragons. This generation has The Game of Thrown. If you love romantic fantasy with the elements like D&D and TGOT you will totally get into this book. We have a Cleric, Mage, Archer and an Orc to make up the band of merry men that follows Maxum on his quest to finding talismans to equip himself for the big battle against Sabo the good who cursed him. Along the way he meets and falls in love with Airianne “Airi” for short. What was very ironic about all the men that Maxum had traveling with him; I was thinking to myself there wasn’t an Elf in the story. Of course, how could I even doubt Jacquelyn after all the years I have read one of her books that she would ever let me down…The banter between Maxum and Airi was so amusing that it had me smiling like a hyena.

If you like D&D or TGOT you will really appreciate the captivating conclusion to Jacquelyn Frank saga featuring four immortal warriors who fight as well as the love. If you wish to start off your holiday season right, treat yourself, come November 24, 2015 Bound in Darkness goes on sale.

Bound in Darkness is the conclusion to Jacquelyn Frank's The Immortal Brothers saga which just makes me sad. Maxum is the last of the brothers to be released from his torturous existence. Again another amazingly strong herione who not helps him steal what he needs but steals his heart in the process. You felt a connection between them from the very first time they meet. There were times that I did worry that things were not going to work out but they did. I didn't see what ultimately happens to Maxum coming. Loved the ending seeing where every one was at in their lives.

I love Jacquelyn Frank's books, and have read just about everything she has written, and can't wait to see where she takes us next.

The greatest thing the Jacqueline Franks brings to this series is the every book is so completely different from the previous ones. Each book has different cultures and different countries which makes every book extremely entertaining and not your standard romance. This book is different from its predecessors because it shares more similarities to an epic fantasy novel. For all the characters there’s a lot of journeying and working towards completing a quest. During this journey there’s a major amount of character development which I find is a trademark of Frank but she takes it to the next level in this book. You also have a more diverse cast of secondary characters which makes this work very well rounded. As with all Jacqueline Frank books you can feel the smoldering sexiness from page one. Maxum and Airianne both manage to burn up the pages! Even though they wait longer to get their groove on than the couples in the previous books and there are parts where the build-up practically sets your panties on fire but let me tell you it’s worth the wait. Maxum is a strange hero, because he carries a tremendous amount of darkness within him but also exudes a carefree and humorous attitude that makes him instantly likeable. He’s alpha enough to send a shiver down your back but not so crazy alpha that you want to put cyanide in his toothpaste. Airianne is so frickin’ cute! She’s quirky and at the same time so self sufficient that she pulls Maxum’s ass out of the fryer more than a couple of times. She’s the embodiment of girl power. The plot is fast paced and written with Frank’s usual gusto and panache. This book is an infinitely enjoyable conclusion to a stellar series.
