Conflict of Interest: African Murder Mystery

Rate this book
Yetunde Ogunniyi was in Barrister Segun Williams’ bed when he was found murdered.

Now she stands accused of killing him. Yetunde had been involved in a secret affair with him, and every piece of evidence points directly at her. Many see her as just another young woman entangled with an older married man and are convinced she must be guilty.

Gideon Akinyemi was once Lagos’ most feared defense attorney, famous for his unorthodox methods and his willingness to defend the guilty. But after a shocking courtroom defeat, Gideon vanished from the legal scene, his once formidable reputation fading. Now determined to make a comeback, he takes on Yetunde’s case — a trial that could restore his legacy or destroy what remains of it. Standing in his way is his old rival, the only lawyer who has ever defeated him in court.

Caught in the middle is Onome, a brilliant and ambitious young lawyer who has long admired Gideon’s legal genius but struggles with the moral weight of the clients he chooses to defend.

As the trial unfolds and long buried secrets begin to surface, the question is not simply who killed Segun Williams.
It is how far someone is willing to go to win.

An amazing read. A captivating Legal thriller. The story follows a young lady accused of murdering her sugar daddy, an older married man, and Lawyers Gideon and Onome steps in to defend the client. The characters are well done and realistic. The book had suspense, courtroom drama, humor, office romance and surprising twits. It is basically like African version of your favorite Law series like Suits.

Conflict of Interest was an engaging read that kept me turning the pages. Michael Oyinloye blends legal drama, suspense, and emotional conflict in a way that makes it difficult to put the book down. Just when I thought I had figured everything out, another twist made me question what I knew.

I enjoyed the courtroom scenes and the way the story explored the tension between ambition, loyalty, love, and doing the right thing. The characters felt believable because they weren't perfect—they made mistakes, had hidden motives, and kept me guessing about who could really be trusted.

There were a few moments where the pacing slowed, but the mystery and the unfolding secrets kept me invested until the end. If you enjoy stories filled with suspense, moral dilemmas, and unexpected revelations, this is definitely worth picking up.

Overall, Conflict of Interest is an entertaining and thought-provoking read that reminds us that every decision has consequences.

Conflict of Interest is a refreshing standout in the Nigerian book space. A true thriller that keeps you hooked from start to finish. It feels authentic, grounded, and real, yet delivers suspense at a level you don’t often see from Nigerian storytelling.

Your heart pounds with the protagonists as they chase the truth, stumble, and rise again. Just when you think you’ve figured it out, the story twists, leaving you questioning everything. And that ending…..

It’s gripping, unpredictable, and completely unputdownable.

This novel is worth reading. Is it the suspense, murder, lawsuit, and justice? Every single page of this novel is something you wouldn't want to miss. The author did a very great thing with his ink on this novel, and I highly recommend....it's not just a novel but a reality inside cover. Reading this book will broaden your knowledge on how cases are being ruled and how most Nigerians go to jail for a crime they know nothing about. It's a solid 10/10 for me

~BOOK REVIEW~
Conflict Of Interest by Michael Oyinloye isn't your typical "who killed him?" kind of thriller. Instead, it dives deep into the courtroom dynamics...packed with tension, secrets, corruption, and even humor that keeps you saying "just one more chapter."

The story follows Yetunde Ogunniyi, who is accused of killing her sugar daddy...a high-profile Senior Advocate of Nigeria. Then there's Gideon Akinyemi, a defense lawyer who was once famous but is desperately looking for a way back into the spotlight. He takes on Yetunde's case and finds himself going head-to-head with a top prosecutor he once lost to in court. This case could either completely ruin him or become the comeback he desperately needs. It's not really about whether Yetunde killed him or not, but how far everyone is willing to go to win the case.

Gideon was easily my favorite character🤭. He felt so real, and I absolutely loved the way he strategized and navigated things in the courtroom. Watching him work was honestly one of the highlights of the book for me.

And Onome? Oh my God. I loved how driven she was. The tension and bickering between her and Rita was EVERYTHING😂. I also loved how serious and professional they became when it came to work.

Dolly P??? Effortlessly funny😭
“I plead the fifth" had me laughing so hard.

This book was gripping, entertaining, suspenseful, and full of twists that genuinely caught me off guard. And that cliffhanger??? Michael Oyinloye, you will hear from me😌

At this point, I genuinely don't think l've read a bad book from “Tales & Whispers” Every single one hits. 1000/10 read for me. I highly recommend!!! 🥰✨
Go grab a copy and thank me later!!!

Conflict of interest had me on the edge of my seat from start to finish and even after, I mean, that's what a good thriller is supposed to be right? But the humour is on another level, I was laughing like a hyena. It's a 5 star read, trust me on this one...

Conflict of Interest reads like a courtroom waiting to explode.....
The brilliance of the author lies in how the legal tension is fused with human weakness, making justice itself feel uncertain.
This is more than a story, it is a quiet argument about ethics, loyalty, and the cost of knowing too much.
Exceptionally written.
Absolutely a must-read

This was such an interesting book because it's a legal thriller, and I love legal thrillers.

What made this book even more interesting for me was that it was told from a Nigerian perspective.

We don't often get a lot of insight into the Nigerian legal system in fiction, especially compared to the Western legal systems we see represented so frequently. So, although this is a fictional story and obviously not a complete or accurate representation of how the Nigerian legal system works, I still found it refreshing to read something that gave me a glimpse into what court proceedings and legal practice might look like in Nigeria.

And I really enjoyed it.

This book was suspenseful, thrilling, and exciting. It kept me on my toes, and I actually started and finished it on the same day. That's how much I couldn't put it down.

The writing was good. The dialogue was good. I enjoyed the conversations between the characters, and I liked the way the author peeled back their layers.

Gideon, especially, was such an interesting character.

He was ambitious, arrogant, and incredibly confident in his abilities as a lawyer. And normally, I don't like arrogance in male characters because I'm always thinking, Why are you so full of yourself?

But with Gideon, I understood it.

This man had only lost one case in his entire career. He was one of the most sought-after lawyers in the country, his firm had an excellent track record, and he knew exactly what he was doing.

So yes, Gideon had every reason to be confident.

The murder case itself was also really interesting.

When I was first introduced to the suspect, I immediately felt that she wasn't the person who had actually committed the crime. But I still wanted to understand how she had ended up in that situation.

I also wanted to understand why someone would commit a murder and then try to frame her for it.

And when I eventually found out the reason, I was like, Oh. Actually, that makes sense.

I also enjoyed seeing the dynamics within Gideon’s law firm, especially with his legal secretary, his paralegal, and the legal intern who joined the firm. I liked seeing their different perspectives and the moral justifications behind their decisions.

Gideon was also morally grey to a certain extent. The kind of clients he represented made me question him at times. But he was also incredibly thorough. He was precise, meticulous, and absolutely brutal in court.

He was not playing around. And I liked that.

Now, his competition, Felix, the only person who had ever defeated him in court, was a completely different story.

He came across as even more arrogant, irritating, and annoying, and I honestly spent a good portion of the book wondering why he was so angry with Gideon.

I kept thinking, What is your problem? Are you jealous? Are you envious? Why are you this upset about this man simply existing and doing his job?

But then again, I also thought about their roles as prosecutor and defence lawyer. I suppose there is a certain amount of tension that naturally exists between the two sides. After all, prosecutors are trying to prove that someone is guilty, while defence lawyers are trying to prove that their client should not be convicted.

And honestly, you both went to law school knowing that everyone has the right to a defence, so why are we suddenly angry when a lawyer decides to become a defence lawyer?

Overall, Conflict of Interest was a really enjoyable read. It was suspenseful, engaging, and a refreshing Nigerian take on the legal thriller genre.

Although the author did leave us with a cliffhanger.

And now I'm sitting here asking: Why? Why would you do this to me?

Obviously, I now want a second book. Because I need to know what happens next.

What makes this book different is that it’s not your typical “who did it” thriller. Yes, there’s a crime, but the real focus is on how it’s handled. Watching Gideon, the defense lawyer, build his case, strategize, and navigate the courtroom was honestly the highlight for me. The process mattered more than the reveal and I loved that.
Gideon as a character? Very human. He’s not pretending to be a saint he’s in it for the money and the fame, and he doesn’t hide it. But at the same time, he’s not a bad person either. He just exists in that grey area, and that made him feel real.
One part I really appreciated was his relationship. He has a girlfriend, and their relationship is solid. At the same time, there’s clear chemistry with his assistant, Onome, but he never crosses that line. That restraint? I liked that. It added a layer of respect and maturity you don’t always see.
Speaking of Onome the dynamics in this book were so fun to watch. Especially Onome and Rita. They clearly didn’t like each other, and their tension was actually funny at times😂, but when it came down to work, they delivered. That balance between conflict and professionalism made the team feel real.
The pacing was fast, and the story kept me hooked from beginning to end. There were twists, yes, but for me, the biggest payoff wasn’t even discovering who committed the crime it was seeing how Gideon built his defense and challenged the prosecution(I was almost reconsidering whether I should be a law student 😭).
It also made me think differently about the legal system, especially in Nigeria. The level of strategy, preparation, and thinking that goes into a case? I didn’t fully appreciate it before this.
Overall, this was a smart, engaging, and refreshing thriller. Not just about crime, but about strategy, morality, and perspective.

I don’t say this lightly but I had an incredible time reading this book.

As a thriller girlie, this was my first African thriller, and I honestly couldn’t have asked for a better introduction. I went into this book excited because everyone seemed to love it, but I was also nervous. I really wanted it to live up to the hype because I didn’t want my first experience with an African thriller to be a disappointing one.

Thankfully, Michael Oyinloye absolutely delivered.

The story follows Yetunde, a young woman accused of murdering her wealthy sugar daddy. Gideon Akinyemi, a brilliant defence lawyer trying to recover from the biggest loss of his career, decides to take on her case. What follows is a gripping legal thriller filled with courtroom drama, unexpected twists, secrets, humour and a murder mystery that kept me completely invested.

One thing this book did exceptionally well was the pacing. Every chapter revealed something new, every courtroom battle pulled me in deeper, and every twist made me question everything I thought I knew. Just when I felt like I’d figured it out, the story would take another turn.

I also loved the characters.

It’s rare for me to genuinely enjoy almost everyone in a book, but every single character brought something to the story. Gideon was easily my favourite because watching him work was fascinating. He was intelligent, confident and exactly the kind of lawyer you’d want fighting your case. But the supporting characters were just as memorable. Onome, Rita, Mama K, Dolly P… everyone had a distinct personality and never felt like they existed just to fill space. They all added something meaningful to the story, and that made the world feel so alive.

I especially loved the banter, the courtroom exchanges and the little moments of humour sprinkled throughout the book. They balanced the heavier moments so well and made the story even more enjoyable.

But what impressed me the most was Michael Oyinloye’s writing.

The legal aspects felt authentic without ever becoming overwhelming, and the suspense never relied on shock value alone. Every clue, every reveal and every plot twist felt earned. You can tell this story was carefully planned, and I really appreciated how everything came together in the end.

This wasn’t just a story about solving a murder. It explored justice, ambition, morality, reputation and how quickly assumptions can shape people’s lives. Those themes gave the story so much more depth than I expected.

This book has officially convinced me that I need more African thrillers on my shelves because if this is the standard, then I’ve clearly been missing out.

Michael Oyinloye, take your flowers. This was smart, entertaining, incredibly well written and honestly one of the most enjoyable books I’ve read this year.

I can’t wait to read whatever he writes next.

A murder, A courtroom, And a client who may not be as guilty as everyone believes she’s or who’s probably guilty🌚🤷🏻‍♀️

Conflict of Interest follows Yetunde, a young woman and the daughter of a Deeper Life pastor, who is arrested for the murder of a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN). With the evidence stacked against her, Gideon reluctantly takes on her defense, hoping to prove himself in a case that could change his career and bring him more spotlights.

I picked this book up expecting a legal thriller, and it did not disappoint at all.The courtroom drama was so engaging, the mystery kept me guessing, I even thought i had the culprit figured out😂then boom!the twist proved me wrong.

One of my favorite things about this book was the characters. I loved how calculated Gideon was. He never put all his eggs in one basket and always has a backup plan up his sleeve. And Onome frustrated me at first because she let her emotions cloud her judgment, but watching her become more professional made me appreciate her character. Rita and Dolly P also brought moments of humor that balanced the tension perfectly😂😂

The story never lost its momentum, and every new revelation makes me eager to turn to the next page and see how everything would unfold. If you’re a fan of legal thrillers with twists that will genuinely surprise you, and very engaging courtroom battle, than Conflict Of lnterest definitely deserves a spot on your TBR😉

This is my second thriller in a very long while and I honestly need to ask the author who exactly he is again! Cause what??

“A trial unfolds, long buried secrets begin to surface, the question is not simply who murdered a barrister, the question is how far someone is willing to go to win”.

Conflict of Interest follows an investigation of a young lady accused of murdering her lover(her sugar daddy, a barrister). It was a dead end until The Gideon Akinyemi steps in to defend the accuser, using the case as an opportunity to redeem himself of his last humiliation with the prosecutor, Felix Salako.

One of the most thrilling moments that I enjoyed while reading this book is the effect the book has on we the readers, I mean the ability to keep readers questioning everything we think we already know!!

Conflict of Interest is a gripping legal thriller that combines murder mystery, exploration of morality, courtroom drama, and professional rivalry. So beyond the book being a thriller, you still get to learn a lot of things.

If you love gripping and chokehold thrillers, then you should add this to your TBR this month!!!

4/5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Conflict of Interest by Michael Oyinloye

This book is not play at all. Conflict of Interest is a proper Nigerian legal thriller.

Yetunde wakes up in Barrister Segun Williams bed and the same night he’s found dead. Na wah. Evidence points straight at her, and because of the secret affair, everybody has already judged her guilty. Typical Naija gist sha....court of public opinion first then court of law later.

Gideon Akinyemi, once upon a time he was Lagos most feared lawyer. After one big courtroom disgrace, he vanished. Now he’s coming out of retirement for one last case to save Yetunde. But it won’t be easy, because his old rival who beat him before is waiting for him in court.

It’s not just "Who killed Segun Williams?" It’s "Who will win?" The author balanced legal drama with personal stakes so well. The courtroom scenes were tense, and I loved that Gideon wasn’t a perfect hero. He was rusty, stubborn, and desperate just like a real person.

I finished it and immediately told my friend "you need to read this". If you love Naija thrillers with moral grey areas, flawed lawyers, and "everybody has a secret" energy, pick this up.

Conflict of Interest is a gripping legal thriller that follows a young woman accused of murdering her sugar daddy, an older married man, with lawyers Gideon and Onome stepping in to defend her. The characters are well-crafted and realistic, and the story balances suspense, courtroom drama, humor, office romance, and surprising twists — someone mentioned to think of it as the African answer to the popular series Suits.

The author delivers sharp plotting and well-crafted courtroom scenes while exploring deeper questions of justice and morality. The characters are layered, especially the lead, whose intelligence and determination drive the story forward — Gideon stands out as a particular favorite. Each chapter builds real tension, leaving you wanting more.

Overall, this is a must-read for fans of crime, mystery, and legal thrillers — a captivating, highly recommended read from start to finish.

‎This took me back to the days when I used to consume John Grisham's books. The investigations, the courtroom scenes with the opening and closing remarks, the objections, badgering and battering of witnesses;  the play of words during  cross examinations... GOOD TIMES.

‎Conflict of Interest is the first Nigerian legal thriller I've read and it is really good.
‎The plot, the characters, the writing, the humour, the sarcasm -Michael did a great job. The unexpected twists were brilliant too.

‎I also loved that it is authentically Nigerian and a pioneer in a niche that hasn't really been explored in Nigerian storytelling. (please correct me if I'm wrong).

‎Micheal writes really well and he wrote a very interesting story.
‎Now, I have to get into Conflict of Interest 2, looks like Barrister Gideon just landed another interesting case.

This was a solid read.

The story moved at a good pace, and I never found myself bored. It's more of a legal thriller than an edge-of-your-seat thriller, though, and I realised I personally wanted a little more of the thriller element. That's just a taste thing, the author didn't really do anything wrong.

The writing was smooth and easy to follow (although I couldn't help noticing "revert back" being used a couple of times 😅).

The ending definitely got my attention but felt a bit hurried. It wraps up enough to leave you satisfied, but it's obvious there's another book coming. I wasn't expecting a cliffhanger, but now I know I'll be picking up the sequel.

Overall, a well-written, fast-paced legal thriller that kept me engaged from start to finish. I just wish the suspense had been turned up a notch.

Want drama, suspense, comedy, law, psychology, medicine in one book, conflict of interest is that book.
I loved the storytelling, how everything flowed and nothing felt out of place. Different character personalities from the good to the bad, the crazy and even the worst of them all like (coughs) no spoilers, sorry😂
I enjoyed reading this and it was fast paced for me, I was so surprised with how quickly I read it but yeah, that’s what you get when you start a good book.
Oh and thanks to the author for teaching me, you do not plead the fifth in a Nigerian court room so I don’t embarrass myself not that I’m planning on going to court 😂.
I will definitely recommend this book, it was well delivered.
