Rate this book
Colton Tremblay won a Stanley Cup with his hometown Montreal Canadiens, but his bad-boy reputation earned him a ticket out of town, traded to the expansion San Antonio Generals. This French-Canadian has no idea what to expect from the land of tacos and Mariachi bands, but he quickly learns that Texas is full of beautiful women, and the one who catches his eye first is no puck bunny.
The daughter of Mexican immigrants, Maya Dominguez has worked hard for everything. Now she’s landed her dream job as a beat reporter for San Antonio’s new NHL franchise. As a female reporter in a male-dominated business, Maya knows she has to be at the top of her game. She can’t afford any distractions, especially not from the players she’s assigned to report on.
When Colton asks Maya to help him get to know his new city, she’s determined to keep things strictly business, but Colton is used to getting what he wants. Can he persuade Maya that this time, he is playing for keeps, and if he does, what does it mean for her job?

Very fast read. Sweet story. I do love hockey players! I would have rated it higher if not for a stupid scene that was totally unnecessary and only served to piss me off. And I am NOT talking about the first paragraph where we wakes up in bed with a puck bunny. That was a non event. No details. Just the fact that she was there and he saw her out.

NHL player, Colton Tremblay’s reputation gets him traded from his hometown team the Montreal Canadians to an expansion team the Generals in San Antonio, Texas. Maya Dominguez gets her big break as a beat reporter for the new NHL team. The two meet while on the job. Maya wants to keep things professional but Colton feels he has finally found someone that is worth more than a one-night stand.

I liked the idea of an NHL expansion team going in a non-typical hockey demographic. Yes, there is a team in Dallas, but San Antonio is a very different city and culture.

I’m glad that after the initial shock of being traded that Colton Tremblay decided to look at his move as a positive thing. He becomes captain of the new team and makes a noteworthy effort. He seems to grow a lot throughout this novel.

I like Maya. She works hard and takes her career seriously. She values her family and has good priorities.

I appreciated the scene where Colton meets Maya’s family. Having a brother who is a police officer and a father who chased her last boyfriend away with a shotgun the situation could be quite intimidating. It said a lot about Colton’s character.

I really enjoyed this book. The plot was interesting and substantial. It had a great flow that was attention-grabbing. After reading Playing for Keeps, I am definitely am interested in reading additional books in the Men of the Ice Series.

What a delightful hockey romance.

Maya is a reporter who has been assigned to the NHL expansion team, the San Antonio Generals. Colton is a bad boy hockey player with a reputation who has been traded away from his team due to a scandal.

When Maya meets Colton, there is an immediate attraction. Despite his reputation, Colton is a sweet guy who intends to charm Maya and become her boyfriend. Everything's going well until the team goes back to Canada to play Colton's former team. Revelations are exposed and leave Maya's job in jeopardy. Maya has to ask herself whether Colton is worth the gamble.

This was a cute, light-hearted story and a quick read. I really enjoyed it.

This was a super cute story about a man with a bad reputation getting a chance to redeem himself and a woman trying to climb the ladder in a male-dominated work environment, sports reporting. Maya finally gets the opportunity she's been working for, a chance to move up from high school athletics, and is assigned the beat for the San Antonio Generals. Colton effectively throws a wrench into her plans when he chooses to pursue her. Aside from the complication of Maya's job as the beat reporter for the team of which Colton is the captain, theirs is a sweet romance. Colton quickly realizes that Maya is different and strives to prove it to her. After Maya's job is jeopardized by a possibly jealous ex, she is given an ultimatum. Thankfully, while Shaun's article put Maya on shaky footing with her boss, she and Colton find their HEA.

I very much enjoyed how Michele Shriver incorporated both Maya's and Colton's cultures into the story. Maya is a first generation Mexican-American. While being American, she is very connected to her Mexican heritage. Colton is from Montreal and has never known anything but living in Canada. Shriver did a great job of incorporating language (both Spanish and French) into the story line. It never seemed out of place and added an extra dimension to the book. Shriver also brings good into the equation with both Maya and Colton introducing each other to some of their culture's staples. Overall, having culture woven in so intimately very much enhanced the book for me.

While the book may have some hints as to what might happen later in the series, the book does not end in a cliffhanger.

Playing for Keeps is the first Novella of Michele Shriver's Men of the Ice Series and what a fantastic start it is.
We get to meet Colton Tremblay NHL superstar and one of the biggest players in Montreal. His reputation has cost him not only in his personal life but now in his professional life as well with a trade to a new expansion team in San Antonio.
Then we get to meet up and coming sports reporter Maya Dominquez. She is a local reporter looking to move up to being a beat writer for The Generals.
When Colton appears at his first press conference and spots Maya amongst the other reporters he is instantly attracted to her and makes it a point to meet her. Maya knows of his reputation but feels the attraction to and takes the chance maybe to see who the real Colton really is.
There are definitely obstacles to overcome and chances to take but all you are hoping for is that they might find their HEA. If you love all things sports and romance this is one you won't want to miss

Maya the ambitious reporter.

Colt the playboy hockey player with the bad reputation.

Two professionals that should never come together…or should they?

The sweetness that surrounds the two heroes is endearing.

The point of view switch within the chapters brings the reader inside Maya and Colt for a better understanding of the feelings building inside each of them.

Decisions, decisions…

Maya struggles between her desire for Colt and the job she so loves. Colt struggles to show Maya he is a changed man. Will they be successful? I wondered through out the book as their feelings grew stronger for each other.

Ms. Shriver develops the internal struggles with great artistry and tact, giving the reader great satisfaction in understanding how the two characters feel.

This is a sweet romance that will make you fall in love with the two heroes. You won’t want to put the book down.

Tightly written, steamy sports romance that follows the relationship between a disgraced hockey star and the beat reporter assigned to cover his team. Loved that the heroine was a first-generation American from a very traditional Hispanic family. The hoops she makes the French Canadian hero jump through are hilarious! (La lengua--mm,mm!)

Can't wait to read the stories of Colton's teammates, Trevor and Nik!

I adored this book. It’s the first one in Michele’s new series and I cannot wait for more. The characters are well developed and the chemistry between Maya and Colton is amazing.

Maya has just landed a team reporter job assigned to the NHL expansion team, the San Antonio Generals. She wants to advance her career and will not let any distraction get in the way. Then Enter Colt Tremblay NHL superstar. He also happens to be the biggest player in all of Montreal. His reputation has cost him dearly, not just in his personal life but professional as well. He is traded to the Generals due to a scandalous event and at the first press conference meets Maya.

She is well aware of his reputation but there is a spark that she cannot ignore. Colt is used to getting what he wants makes a play. She takes a chance to see if there is more to him and there is. Under all the player is a sweet guy, who every intention of sweeping her off her feet. They have ups and downs but they take the chance on each other. Will they overcome these obstacles or will it break them? Read and find out. I cannot wait to see what Michele come out with next.

Michele Shriver delivers an easy to read, fast-paced romance in Playing for Keeps, book one of her Men of the Ice series. Colton is a professional hockey player, who has just been traded to a new expansion team. He’s hoping to leave his bad boy reputation behind and use the trade as a fresh start. Maya is a beat reporter who gets promoted from covering high school sports to San Antonio’s new professional hockey team. Maya captures Colton’s attention at a preseason press conference with a hard-hitting question about his bad boy image. Colton, intrigued by the dark-haired beauty, decides to follow through on his plans to change his image, starting with getting to know his new city-San Antonio-better. And who better to show him around San Antonio than the reporter who catches his eye?

Playing for Keeps is a fast-paced sweet and sexy romance. It’s a fun book, and the author’s knowledge of professional hockey is evident throughout the story. Readers will love Colton and Maya and look forward to the second installment in the Men of the Ice series.

**** "Playing for Keeps: A Men on the Ice Novella" by Michele Shriver

"Playing For Keeps" is a truly fun enjoyable novel. It is a story of sports and romance rolled into a truly wonderful, but not sappy, read.

Colton, a professional hockey player, has been traded to a new team and has to change his partying and playboy ways. Maya is finally given the chance to cover the NHL via the sports paper she works for. What neither of them expect is for something potentially special would arise so quickly after their new life changes. Thus, some decisions eventually have to be made and some life and career decisions are on the line...

An engaging and heartwarming novel that is realistic in nature and writing and easily allows the reader to relate to the characters, the reader almost feels as if they are actually witnessing events as they evolve and change and new situations and questions arise.

A novella I would recommend for anyone ages 15 and older. i know I will be looking for the next book in this series.

This is a novella introducing us to the San Antonio Generals hockey expansion team and their new captain and resident bad boy Colton Tremblay. Colton was not happy to get a call to tell him he had been traded from his beloved Montreal Canadiens, but decides that now is the time to get focused and try to improve the poor reputation that he had earned in recent times.

Maya Dominguez has had to fight tooth and nail for her job as a sports reporter and when she gets offered the beat with the newly formed Generals she can’t wait to make her mark.

All that changes when she meets captain Colton and the sparks fly, threatening both her career and reputation.

Only 4 stars for me, as I felt the end was a bit rushed and I think this would have been a 5 star read had it been a full size novel. That said, I can’t wait for the rest of the series!

Colton Tremblay has just been traded from the Montreal Canadiens where he won a Stanley Cup to the new expansion team, the San Antonio Generals. He's shocked but now has a second chance at rebuilding his image which has taken a nose-dive due to his long string of women.

Maya Dominquez has finally been given the chance at furthering her career as a journalist at All Sports when she is given the opportunity to cover the Generals. She knows she must be professional and not risk this opportunity of a lifetime.

Yet when Colton and Maya meet sparks fly and there is instant attraction. Yet both of a lot on the line career wise and if they are caught will they lose everything they have worked so hard for?

Great attraction and second chances!!

Playing for Keeps by Michele Shriver is a true testament about not believing everything you heard and not to judge someone based on what someone else tells you. Colton Tremblay is an outstanding hockey player. His one flaw is he loves women. Colton is traded to an expansion team in Texas where he meets Maya. He is immediately taken with her. Her one flaw is she is a reporter whose job is to report about the hockey team he is playing for. Colton pursues Maya in a way that makes her comfortable. After a fellow reporter decides to out Maya and Colton's relationship Maya has to chose between love or no longer reporting on hockey. Maya puts her faith in Colton. Love always wins.

Wow! Just wow!

5 stars!

This book did not disappoint me at all and I love hockey! I like Colton who is such a playboy but has a change of heart.

I can see why Maya had doubts but she is a beautiful strong and independent woman. Watch out world, she is taking everything by storm.

A sports writer spending time with a playboy hockey player that gets traded. What will happen when these two meet?

Enjoy the book, I highly recommend it if you love sports romance.

I'm a big fan of sexy athletes and Shriver delivered with Colten! Less than excited about his trade, he meets Maya and slowly becomes open to the idea. I loved Maya's family and how Colten was really sweet and sensitive deep down.
