Every Girl Gets Confused

Rate this book
Katie Fisher and Brady James may be a match made in heaven, but that doesn't seem to guarantee them a happily ever after accompanied by angelic choirs. In fact, the sounds being heard at the bridal shop where she works are on the contentious side lately, as a bride- and groom-to-be try to mediate the growing rivalry between their basketball-obsessed families in the middle of play-off season. On top of that, Katie's parents are nagging her to get out of Dallas and come home to tiny Fairfield where her former boyfriend Carson is waiting for her, ready to rekindle their relationship. Oy vey! What's a girl to do? And will she ever be able to wear that gorgeous wedding dress she won?

The breezy fun continues as Janice Thompson throws everyone's favorite small-town girl into big-city bridal chaos--and makes her choose between the love she thought she lost and the love she stumbled upon in the aftermath.

2016 thoughts: I’m grinning from ear to ear, I so enjoy Miss Janice’s books. With this one, however, while I still enjoyed it, it felt that there was a bit more sexual hints & mentions then the previous book in the series. Still much cleaner than other books I’ve reviewed and still as hilarious as her other books, though. Fantastic Spiritual Content, which is refreshing. :) Janice Thompson makes the characters come alive on the pages. I really do enjoy her books. Hey, Revell! Do me a huge favor and publish more books by this wonderful lady, alright? Please and Thank you! ;)

2023 reread: I wanted pure happiness to read and I knew exactly which author to go to. The cast of characters in this trilogy makes this such a fun series! They’re such a mess, hahaha!

I think some readers might call Katie whishy-washy because of Casey entering back into her life, but 1. I don’t view her as that because she’s committed to Brady and 2.) she and Casey dated for years, so of course she’s going to feel somewhat familiar with him, despite him breaking her heart. I don’t think there was ever a glimpse of a love triangle in this book, because we know Katie & Brady are the end game—and what a sweet end game it is! I just love the two of them together, especially in this middle book because of her commitment to him and everything they’re going through. There’s a few mentions of married adult activities, and while I think they would go over a younger reader’s head, those comments are still there, but minor hints.

A delightful return to Katie and Brady's story. With the full host of supporting characters that made the first book so fun, Katie now must decide who she will gift her heart to. Things are a little...confusing...but her heart keeps returning to one man. I thoroughly enjoyed this laugh out loud story that reminds us that our life happens in seasons. Some are hard, but as we cling to God, we'll be ready for future seasons.

I went in with low expectations because I was afraid it would be a love triangle. To my relief, it was well-handled and less dramatic than I expected from the back cover copy. There’s more of the aunt-and-grandmother hijinks, plus some fun bridal-gallery drama. I’m eager to read the next book in the series.

Katie Fisher is loving her job working at Dallas's elite bridal store. And she's loving every minute she spends with her hunky boyfriend, Mavericks player, Brady James. She's got her man and she should have a happily ever after right? Yet Katie's life never goes the way she plans. For starters, the bridal shop has become almost a war zone with hard-to-please brides and their opposing basketball loving families. Plus her parents want her to move back to the tiny town of Fairfield where her former boyfriend wants to rekindle their romance. And then there's Brady. Katie knows that there's something going on with him that he's not sharing with her. As he seems to pull away, Katie tries hard to let him have his space. After all, she's sure he loves her, right?

Janice Thompson's books always make me laugh. I was so delighted to read this one. This is the second in the series, and they do need to be read in order. One of the things that I love about Janice's books is that each chapter has a title or a quote from a singer or actress. In this book, they are either Doris Day song titles or phrases.

First there's Katie. She's a fun narrator. I'm enjoying watching her grow more into her character in this book. Brady is a sweetheart.

But for me, it's the supporting cast of characters that really make this book shine. From the workers in the bridal shop to Katie's crazy relatives, these are the characters that had me laughing and giggling my way through the book.

I'm looking forward the the conclusion to this series when it comes out next year.

I received the kindle version of this book for free from Revell Books via NetGalley for the purpose of reviewing. My thoughts and opinions are my own.

Every Girl Gets Confused – Janice Thompson (4.5 Stars)

Every Girl Gets Confused continues where Janice Thompson’s Brides with Style series left off at the end of Every Bride Needs a Groom. Told from the perspective of small-town girl, Katie Fisher, Every Girl Gets Confused follows the quirky coworkers of Cosmopolitan Bridal as they cope with an over-abundance of brides following their successful feature in Texas Bride magazine. Katie attempts to balance her family life in her hometown with managing a Black Friday sale for the history books. In the meantime, the love of her life, Brady James, faces one of his greatest fears as his injury may mean the end of his NBA career. When Katie’s ex-boyfriend reinserts himself into her life, she must choose between escaping into the world of her picturesque hometown or continuing to fight for her future with Brady in Dallas. With the help of her family and friends, Katie must depend on God to stay focused during life’s ever-changing seasons.

Overall, I definitely enjoyed reading Every Girl Gets Confused. Ms. Thompson remains true to her humorous writing and first-person storytelling style, while building upon the ever-fun and fascinating cast introduced in Every Bride Needs a Groom. However, she adds a more serious underlying theme, focusing on God’s consistency in the good and bad times. Drawing from her family’s own experiences with grief and hardship, Ms. Thompson offers a realistic depiction of God’s faithfulness and mercy, interspersed with her special brand of humor and loveable characters. The novel bridges Ms. Thompson’s earlier novel and forthcoming works that continue the series. As a result, some readers may prefer to read the books in order, rather than as stand-alone works. Ms. Thompson has an incredible ability to create a world unto itself that builds upon her prior novels’ characters, plots, and settings. Every Girl Gets Confused is no exception to that rule, as the book’s primary conflict develops from events described extensively in Every Bride Needs a Groom. I would definitely recommend the work as part of the series and I look forward to seeing the next chapter of Katie and Brady’s story in the next book of the Brides with Style series.

In Every Girl Gets Confused, Katie Fisher is working at Cosmopolitan Bridal Shop, with her boyfriend, Brady. As Brady prepares for knee surgery, Katy finds herself visiting her small hometown to prepare for her grandmother's wedding, and running into her ex-boyfriend Casey. As Brady becomes more and more distracted, Katie is confused on where their relationship is heading.

I have read some of Thompson's other novels, and I enjoy her light-hearted style - this book was an easy read, but I also appreciated the lessons the characters learn about God's faithfulness through different seasons.

The "theme" of this book was Doris Day, and in addition to mentions of Doris Day in the plot, there were Doris Day quotes to start each chapter. I thought having a muse for the book added a fun dimension (and it looks like the inspiration for the next book in the series will be Audrey Hepburn, which I am excited about).

Many of the characters in this book were eccentric, in a way that wasn't quite believable, but that is typical of the sense of humor in Thompson's books. There was one conversation line that alluded to an unwitting old lady accidentally viewing p.orn online that I did not appreciate. I don't like jokes about por.nography because it is a serious problem, and a source of a lot of evil, so that didn't sit well with me, even though I know the author meant it to be silly.

I did enjoy some of the more over-the-top characters. However, the distinct characters in this story did make me feel like the main character, Katie, didn't have enough quirks. I felt like I wasn't able to get to know her as well as I would have liked because all the other characters stood out more.

I do suspect I would feel more connected to Katie if I had read these books in order. This book is the second in this series, and as I read it, I felt like I was missing some of the background story. These novels are not stand-alones, but follow Katie through her romantic and family struggles, so for that reason I would recommend picking up the first book before this one to get the full picture. However, I did enjoy this book and the quirky humor fit my mood perfectly. A lot of the story also takes place during the holiday season, which made this time of year a fun time to read it. I look forward to picking up the next book when it is available!

Note: I received a copy of this book for free in exchange for this review. This is my honest opinion.

Even though my preferred genre is mystery/suspense, sometimes I like to read something lighthearted. When I do, Janice Thompson books are always a good choice. She writes well; there is a lot of humor; and the characterization is wonderful.

This book starts up where the previous one left off. Queenie, Katie’s 82 year old grandmother, is getting ready for her wedding. As Katie helps her, she runs into her ex-boyfriend, Casey, who is showing interest in her again. I’ll admit that part of the book was a little disturbing to me. I don’t think it’s a good idea to be hanging out with your ex-boyfriend when you’re seriously dating someone else.

The quirky characters are what made the book for me. Katie’s mama has definite ideas on how King David preferred his worship and keeps earplugs in her purse in case she is ever “held at gunpoint and forced to attend the second service” (with contemporary worship). Katie’s aunt, Alva, is a riot. She is allergic to chestnuts “in her mind” and thinks the speakerphone in Katie’s car is really a radio station. She can’t figure out how people she knows keep getting included in the radio program. It is great fun watching Queenie get ready for her wedding right down to the lingerie shower her 80 year old bridesmaids throw for her.

This book will help you appreciate your family with all their quirks….whether it’s your biological family, church family, or work family. It’s a celebration of family pulling together to get through hard times.

Thank you to Revell for providing me with a free e-copy of this book for the purpose of this review. I enjoyed it.

Katie Fisher and Brady James may be a match made in heaven, but that doesn't seem to guarantee them a happily ever after accompanied by angelic choirs. Katie's almost-fiancé Casey is back in Fairfield, ready to rekindle their relationship. And there's nothing Katie's parents want more than for their small-town girl to leave Dallas and come home for good.

But can she really leave Brady behind? And will she ever be able to wear that gorgeous wedding dress she won?

This is a continuation of Katie and Brady’s story. It would be beneficial to read “Every Bride Needs a Groom” first to understand some of the ins and outs of this book. Not necessary though. I enjoy the humorous writing style of Ms. Thompson and this book didn’t disappoint. I love Queenie and friends. The bridal store group was a hoot too. This book also had its serious side. It showed how Katie stuck it out with Brady when he was having a difficult time after his knee surgery. The advice that Katie kept receiving from her friends was right out of the Bible and very encouraging for those going through difficult times. I will be sure to look for the next book about Katie and Brady.

I would recommend this book to everyone.

I was given this book by the publisher for an honest review. I was not compensated in any way.

I love the concept of this book. It was the blurb that really drew me to this book. Well, that and the cute cover.

This book ended up being just okay for me. Sometimes it just felt too long. Some scenes dragged on with seemingly no point to them and I'll admit that I took to skimming in some parts. There were A LOT of characters in this book- maybe too many- each with a side story (and romance) going on. I would have preferred more feeling and focus on the main characters. While all the characters were likable enough, I didn't feel especially connected to them. I really didn't feel the romantic connection between Katie and Brady. They felt like friends, which is good, but I didn't get any of those tingly feelings associated with romantic tension and anticipation.

This book was clean though, and that is something I always appreciate. This is Christian fiction and there is some religious talk. I actually really loved the concept of "seasons" in our life and each season brings something for us to learn. Hard things happen in life but there can be beauty in each season if we look for it. So, the moral of this story was a good one even if I didn't love how it was presented.

I loved it. I loved it. I loved it! Every Girl Gets Confused is an amazing book and I loved every word!

Watching the romance between Katie and Brady grow was a lot of fun. The real life situations and applications make it something you’re going to want to read again and again.

The only real problem with Every Girl Gets Confused is the number of characters. If you didn’t read the first book I would imagine it could be quite confusing. Fortunately for me, I read the first book and it was like hanging out with old friends.

My favorite part is that Doris Day is a part of the story. She’s one of my favorites and I loved integrating her life and persona into this romance.

Janice Thompson's novels are pure fun. I loved the first Brides with Style novel, Every Bride Needs a Groom, and this one is just as charming. While Every Girl Gets Confused can be read as a stand-alone, it is that much more enjoyable having read the first one. Katie is adorable, and I appreciate her love and commitment to her family--with all of its eccentricities--even as she enjoyed the bit of distance and independence that moving the almost-ninety miles to Dallas gave her. Janice Thompson once again delights with this romance filled with engaging characters (no pun intended!) and brimming with Texas-sized love and laughter. Don't miss it!

Janice Thompson has once again brought us back to Katie Fisher and her life in Dallas. She was the winner of the bridal contest and the beautiful gown she is now hanging in her grandmother’s closet.
Katie has found new love with Brady, but he has his own demons to fight dealing with his knee and his basketball career with Mavericks. It seems everywhere he goes he is recognized, and people either like him or judge him for his team.
Grandmother Queenie is planning her wedding to the Reverend, and we are about getting ready for this celebration. There are other family romances going on, some having problems.
Come back or start here and enjoy this loving family, with the usual ups and downs, and enjoy a few chuckles and fuzzing warm feelings. See how when they follow God’s will instead of their own how things work out. When you turn the final page you will be wanting more, and there is another book to come! I cannot wait!

Katie Fisher is the gal over thirty…with a new job at Cosmopolitian Bridal Shop in Dallas, living behind her old life, her family in Fairfield, and the broken heart because of the rejection from her best childhood friend Carson.

She found a new life and a new love… Brady James is Mr. Perfect, Handsome, and Smart. In few month of her living there, she learned to love Brady, and he liked her back. But with broken knee, he lost any hope to be back in pro basketball team, he started to distance himself from Katie..

Will she help him to be back to a cool guy he is? Or will he lose his faith in God altogether?

I would say this is a story with a happy ending.

Another hit by Janice Thompson. I love her books, and I love this new series. We were introduced to Katie in the first book, where she won a wedding dress... despite not being engaged. And now we get to see her in this new season, as she leaves her small town to take work at the bridal shop in Dallas.

I love Katie. I think she's hilarious. She has that small-town charm without it being too overbearing and fake. She's gotten over being dumped by her long-town boyfriend, and settling into this new relationship with Brady. I love getting to see both sides--small town living, and big city living. And like any Janice Thompson novel, the secondary characters are what makes the novel. I love seeing the different dynamics of all the different people, from those working at the shop, to those in her hometown.

I think this one was a little more real than some of her others. Brady is really struggling with the realization that he might never play basketball again due to his knee. But more than being able to relate to Brady, Katie has to learn how to support and be there for him. It can be hard to know how to support someone when they're feeling that... depressed, you could say, and I like how this touched on that.

I don't read much romance, but Janice Thompson will always be a go-to favorite. Yes, there is a little too much "everything works out perfectly" but I think that's what makes them enjoyable. They're just a lot of fun, and I loved this one.

I received a copy from the publisher, this did not affect my honest opinion.

Although I loved seeing so many fun characters from the previous book, this wasn’t my fav in the series, because some of the situations seems to be resolved so … weirdly? I don’t know how to phrase it exactly. Some big decisions just seemed to climax and fizzle out. I would have preferred personally to see growth or crossroads/decisions made…

Also, this one had a LOT of kissing and what seemed like minimal relationship building… which stinks, because, the actual relationship/friendship part is crucial for any couple considering marriage ❤️ but ESPECIALLY Christian marriage (and this is a Christian book). And yes the lovey feeling is amazing (I am happily married 🥰) I wanted to see these two develop that deeper than physical attraction kind of connection and it fell short on the page. There were also many, many innuendos (all about marriage but still not necessary).

However, I did enjoy the spiritual content about contentment: that was good. And the ending was super sweet. Because of those two things I felt I could give it a solid 3⭐️ but would recommend it for 18+ readers due to the above content.

Another sweet chapter from Katie´s life - and it only gets better, even if the road is broken sometimes.

Katie and Brady are happy couple - only Brady gets quiet from time to time as the term of his second knee operation is approaching and Katie can´t help and wonder, if the things are truly on the good way for them. And her ex-boyfriend is suddenly back, showering her with his time and interest, at that.
Luckily her extravagant family and their friends (including the new ones) are here to distract her with their shenanigans and to teach her some wisdom, too.

Ooh, and how I love the seniors? With Queenie off the market, so to say, maybe its time for Alva, her (older!) sister to find some happiness, too. And don´t forget all the other couples or couples-to-be!

So yes, this second novel in the series is still not any Dostoyevsky. But if you are ever in need for the simple, warm read, take this one.

Katie Fisher’s new life in Dallas is a far cry from her sedate one in small-town Fairfield. Following the success of the Cosmopolitan Bridal contest, brides are clamoring for the famous Loretta Lynn gown and Katie and her friends are struggling to keep up with the demand. Adding to the pressure is her boyfriend’s upcoming knee surgery, her grandmother Queenie’s impending nuptials, and feuds between sports teams and church denominations. Not to mention the fact her ex seems to want her back. No wonder Katie’s confused!

Every Girl Gets Confused continues Katie’s story from Every Bride Needs a Groom and it hinges on the events that happened there. I honestly wouldn’t recommend reading this one if you haven’t read the first book in the series yet. Katie’s introspection and various conversations in the first couple of chapters remind the reader what happened in Book 1 (a not-so-subtle backstory dump) and it might bring the reader up to speed. But it’s the amount of characters to keep up with and each one’s respective quirks and drama - not to mention new characters - that might overwhelm some readers.

It took me a bit to get into this one. The aforementioned backstory dump and early action was a little slow. But once the ball starts rolling, it does start to get more interesting. I found myself more intrigued with the wedding shop and a new bride’s feuding family than with the situation going on with Brady.

Plus there is the topic of Casey. In some senses, I get why Casey wanted to come back. To some degree, his and Katie’s breakup was because he wanted to pause - not end - their relationship while he was working out-of-state. Katie was shocked and broke it off partly because she did NOT want a long-distance relationship and was mad he wasn’t proposing.

At the same time, Casey knows Katie’s going out with Brady. Even though theirs is one of a rebound variety (no pun intended), she shouldn’t be getting too cozy with Casey. She should’ve known better.

My only other nitpick would be that there were a few innuendos from the geriatric set regarding someone’s wedding night I would’ve left out. Nothing is outright stated and everything is kept off the page, but the comments are a bit…awkward to say the least.

I will say though, for all its quirkiness (hello, wedding reception punch! 🤣), this story does have the ability to touch your emotions and not just your funny bone. I definitely got teary-eyed when Queenie got married. As I read about her trip down the aisle and her ceremony, all I could see in my mind was my own grandparents’ 50th anniversary vow renewal, made even more poignant by the loss of my maternal grandmother between the time I started and finished the book. The small-town love and support and the emotion were much the same in both ceremonies, and it touched me.

I don’t think this is my favorite Janice Thompson book that I’ve read, but it still was good. One thing she is always fantastic at is proposal scenes. The Dream Dress is always the one that comes to my mind…I think that one is my favorite proposal scene of hers. And this one came through, interestingly enough with the help of a character from The Dream Dress. So while I wouldn’t put this one as five stars, it’s definitely a solid four stars!

This is a fun return to Katie and Brady’s story, but don’t forget the folks at the bridal shop and in Fairfield because the book wouldn’t be the same without them. As Katie and Brady explore where God is taking them, we enjoy a wedding with a special punch (I laughed out loud at the punch), holidays, confusion, and a reminder that life is full of different seasons. I loved how the theme of life’s seasons kept coming around in this book, as if the author knew I needed the reminder.

What a wonderful book! I feel like I really know these characters. The author does such a great job making you feel like a part of the story. There were several times that this book had me laughing out loud! I can’t wait to start book 3!

I've only read a few of Ms Thompson's books, but her Christian romantic comedies are irresistible. This author is going on my Must-Read list.

A fun, clean love story

I love romance and this delivered. Don't look for bad language or naughty situations in a Janice Thompson book. J. T. is an author you go to when you want to escape for awhile. She originally wrote comedy and it comes across in her fun novels. This is the second book of a trilogy. You need to read them in order to fully understand what is happening and why. The numerous J. T.books I've read are centered on quirky family members who are equaly represented throughout the trilogy. You get to know them all and love them. Ms. Thompson starts each chapter in this series with a quote. I enjoyed them as much as the story and shared a number of them with my family. They're priceless as is the cute story you'll remember with a smile.
