Okay. Even though I only gave this book 3 stars, I actually really liked it. Loved the magic, the “hippie” coven Levi found himself taken in by, the caretaker and hurt/comfort vibes between River and Levi.
The thing I really had issues with was the pacing. The relationship and spice don’t hit until like 70%, which made it feel like the slow burn I was looking for. However, due to the pacing, that was actually only like 10 days. Way too fast to be a true slow burn and too fast to resolve the deep-seated issues Levi was struggling with. I’d LOVED to have seen this book at twice the length and time span.
There were some unresolved plot lines…twice, it’s mentioned there’s a “she” in River’s past who hates him, but we never find out who “she” is?? It’s almost like it was supposed to be a plot line and the author either forgot or changed their mind. There are also some continuity errors - one page says one time, one page says another; it says “River” when it should say “Levi”.
I loved it enough to finish despite these issues and would absolutely read a book two if there was one!

I wanted to like this one so badly and while the characters and plot had a lot of potential the pace was quite slow and the writing had a very clinical, detached feeling to it. This was only told from Levi's POV and the numbness made sense at the beginning because he's on the run and in shock. But as it continued and felt more like the writing style itself not a way to show Levi's trauma it became less enjoyable. Because the writing felt so detached from the emotion of the story it was hard for me to connect with the characters and what was going on. I might be willing to try this again in the future but for now it's a DNF.

I love witch stories so I hopped right on this one!
I think this book would've benefited more if it was longer. The first sex scene felt premature, especially with Levi being a victim and essentially a prisoner for 9 years. And every other sex scene after that just wasn't it for me. I'm also not a fan of pet names.
I loved the author's writing style, but the build up was most of the book (Levi's trauma totally made me cry) and the climax was way too abrupt and fast (my vindictive side wanted more) . All in all a good read.

The book itself was enjoyable, but the pacing felt rushed. It had all the elements of a five-star read, yet the compressed timeline held it back. Everything unfolds within just a few weeks…everything. The main characters meet, fall in love, confront the villains, and end up together in roughly two weeks. Still, the premise was strong, and I’m looking forward to seeing more from this author.
