In this sensuous Regency romance, Jason, Lily, and Bess become engaged to the wrong people.
Captain Jason Northcross desperately desires his sister, Lily, to marry into noble society. To achieve a duchy for his sister, he needs a proper marriage for himself. His status guarantees an easily achieved betrothal, and he should have no trouble selecting one of the eligible young ladies during his party in the countryside. However, distracted from his goal, he has a hard time keeping his hands off his neighbor, Lady Rushford.
The late Earl of Rushford's widow, Bess Webster, believes romance has passed her by. So why can’t she keep Captain Northcross out of her dreams? And how does he inflame passions she didn’t know she had? While she should be focused on penning novels and finding husbands for her friends, her thoughts center on broad shoulders and laughing green eyes.
Will these misaligned engagements be set straight before the final vows have been spoken?
Bess was a "a man's man"earl's widow whose riding, hunting, cursing, drinking (strong spirits) exceeded that of a manly man. She met Jason, a captain, 10 yrs her junior, obsessed with gaining a titled man for his sister. During the story the H & h each became engaged to someone else, yet become lovers.
Neither of the leads thrilled me. Jason was immature and Bess showed extreme rudeness. With her manners & habits she'd have preferred to be a man?
This is described as a sensuous romance and it is. The dialogue is snappy and the side love story was sweet. What I didn't care for were: the antagonists. They were made into villains by their vulgar sexuality and gave the story a sexual harassment vibe that was more than uncomfortable. The female antagonist is a loose end unless I missed where she went.
Stuffy nobility, tawdry novelists, and sizzling scandals...oh my! I almost didn't buy this book because the few others I have read in this genre were too slow moving for my taste. Not so with this novel, though! The author successfully captured the feeling of the timeframe and setting without getting bogged down in the descriptive details. The book maintained a steady pace, held my interest, and delivered a few surprises along the way. Oh, and the steamy scenes had some serious heat! This book proved to be yet another great pick by the Kindle Scout program. All of their books that I've read so far have been excellent.
This book is filled with colorful characters. What I liked about it was that the thing that was keeping Jason and Bess apart was not a lack of communication or misunderstandings. It was a sense of duty. Jason had to procure the "right" kind of wife for himself so he could arrange a "suitable" marriage for his sister. What I didn't like was the sense of betrayal and disloyalty they showed to Jason's fiancee, especially during their last dalliance. It was deceitful, and they felt no remorse for their actions. Granted, this is just a story, but they showed little respect for Miss Swan, who thought his proposal was sincere.
A lot of elements within this story- older woman younger man romance; issues of class; and sexuality all pushed upon. A couple of loose ends- really would have liked to see the villainess get her just deserts and an epilogue would have been lovely.
The heart wants what it wants. This is the lesson for Captain Jason Northcross to learn in Captain and Countess. You see, Jason’s soldiering took him far from home, but now that he’s back, he’s determined to do right by his little sister.
First up on his agenda is to contract a favorable bride for himself. Then he will leverage that connection to assure Lily’s future as a duchess. Easy peasy.
Trouble comes along in the form of delectable Lady Rushford. Jason quite literally can’t keep his hands off her. The widow of an Earl, Bess has no intention of getting tangled up in the Captain’s life, but to her chagrin, he invades her dreams.
Thus begins a merry Regency dance, one of romance and schemes, one of half-truths and doing what is right for someone else. When someone discovers Bess’s secret, she has a hard choice to make, but the consequences of her decision make big ripples in the fabric of her life.
Sensuous and bold, this story drew me in from the start. I rooted for Bess and for Jason to find their heart’s desire. Another winning book from the Kindle Scout program.
Maggie Toussaint, also writing as Rigel Carson, for Muddy Rose Reviews.
I am a huge fan of Regency Romance and Alice Gaines did not disappoint. With a hot cup of tea, and the door shut to the teenage noise that fills my house, I curled up with Gaine's book to enjoy the elegance of the pastoral English countryside so reminiscent of Jane Austen's novels (if Austen was able to write steamy sex scenes.) A lovely escape into a fun plot with strong-minded women and strong-bodied men.
I loved the characters in this book. All were relatable. I do wish I could read more about the other couples in the story. There were a few parts that were contradictory, but other than that, perfection. The heroine is older than the hero, which is rare in historical romance. They were both lovable and memorable. I may read this book again.
I laughed throughout while reading this book. It was a very cute story with an original plot. I loved the interactions between the various characters, and the situational humor was great. I would recommend reading this book. It will definitely lighten your mood.
Such a good story and so true when it comes to how rtf things used to be done. The story held my attention and I really didn't see a lot of f2f the twist n turns that happened
Excellent storyline of unconventional characters. The minor characters were a bit stereotypical, but overall contributed to the development of the hero and heroine.
