Another from the pile that Neo had to take the lead reading. The basic story tells of how five little puppies are making their way from home and finding mischief, particularly the slowest (poky) puppy of all. Where they come upon a strawberry, all five realize that food awaits them at home, so they rush home, again taking the journey up, over, and through things. By the end, that darned poky puppy is still lagging behind. Neo did well with this story, though we are still perfecting the best way to have him read. Phonetics will be the major hurdle, but Neo knows how to power through. Patience, young ginger!

I enjoy Little Golden Books, and I enjoy the antics of the Poky Little Puppy, but it is a verbose little story and while my daughters love it, they're not ready to fully read it alone. This little reader changes all that! In a Level 1 reader Random House Step into Reading has made it entirely possible for my budding reader to read this book all by herself (it was very exciting!)! This is the perfect level for a reader who has a grasp on the basic phonograms and is learning more daily. I'm very pleased with the repetition and quality of the words chosen. I'd love to have a copy of this for our shelves.

I read a digital arc.

The poky little puppy go lost a lot. He couldn’t run as fast as the others but he didn’t give up!

Love the full version golden book of this story. This one is obviously shortened and modified to be for beginner readers (0.8AR) and loses a little bit of the storyline but is still a cute read and nostalgic.

I know this is a first reader version of the story, and I know I'm probably wearing rose-coloured glasses about the original since I haven't read it in years, but this just doesn't have the charm of the original story. Mini-Me liked this version well enough, but I can't wait to introduce her to the original.

In a little of five puppies, one is left out. He's the Poky Little Puppy.

Many youngsters can relate to this character. He's the curious one, the one who stops to wonder at life.

FIVE STARS for devoting this book to him. This character has, for generations, been a hero and a kindred spirit to many.

This was one of my favorites when I was a child and my children's favorite when they were toddlers. I was afraid when I opened it, it would be butchered into stilted language and phonetically regular text. Somehow, Depken capture the story and made it accessible to early readers.

I thought the book had some cute illustrations, but at times I felt like the dog was being made fun of or left behind by the other dogs which I didn’t like. Maybe the dog also has a disability too?

The Poky Little Puppy has fun playing outside with his siblings until it's time to go in for a treat.

I read this book on Kindle. The text was okay. The illustrations did not load in at all. That was quite a disappointment.
