The Poky Little Puppy stars in his first Step into Reading book! This Step 1 Step into Reading title has been adapted from the original Little Golden Book story The Poky Little Puppy for children just learning to read. Freshly illustrated in the style of the original book, this simple, sweet story about a familiar puppy and his roly-poly, tumble-bumble adventures will inspire confidence in the newest readers. Step 1 Readers feature big type and easy words for children who know the alphabet and are eager to begin reading. Rhyme and rhythmic text paired with picture clues help children decode the story.
Another from the pile that Neo had to take the lead reading. The basic story tells of how five little puppies are making their way from home and finding mischief, particularly the slowest (poky) puppy of all. Where they come upon a strawberry, all five realize that food awaits them at home, so they rush home, again taking the journey up, over, and through things. By the end, that darned poky puppy is still lagging behind. Neo did well with this story, though we are still perfecting the best way to have him read. Phonetics will be the major hurdle, but Neo knows how to power through. Patience, young ginger!
I enjoy Little Golden Books, and I enjoy the antics of the Poky Little Puppy, but it is a verbose little story and while my daughters love it, they're not ready to fully read it alone. This little reader changes all that! In a Level 1 reader Random House Step into Reading has made it entirely possible for my budding reader to read this book all by herself (it was very exciting!)! This is the perfect level for a reader who has a grasp on the basic phonograms and is learning more daily. I'm very pleased with the repetition and quality of the words chosen. I'd love to have a copy of this for our shelves.
Love the full version golden book of this story. This one is obviously shortened and modified to be for beginner readers (0.8AR) and loses a little bit of the storyline but is still a cute read and nostalgic.
BOOK REVIEW: TITLE: The Poky Little Puppy AUTHOR: Kristen L Depken ILLUSTRATOR: Sue DiCicco Review Title A cute rhyming book with cute puppies
SETTING: In the meadow STORY: The Poky Little Puppy is a fun children's rhyming book with some little puppies who go out in the countryside it seems. They go past the meadow and up a hill. We search for the puppies on both sides of the hill. We find the puppies and they go back the way they came, all the way back to the house, after finding a strawberry in the meadow. We find the puppies again, eating strawberry pancakes. 1. BEGINNING: The puppies go out in the Meadow 2. MIDDLE: We are trying to find the puppies 3. END: We find the puppies and they go back home to eat strawberry pancakes
I know this is a first reader version of the story, and I know I'm probably wearing rose-coloured glasses about the original since I haven't read it in years, but this just doesn't have the charm of the original story. Mini-Me liked this version well enough, but I can't wait to introduce her to the original.
This was one of my favorites when I was a child and my children's favorite when they were toddlers. I was afraid when I opened it, it would be butchered into stilted language and phonetically regular text. Somehow, Depken capture the story and made it accessible to early readers.
I thought the book had some cute illustrations, but at times I felt like the dog was being made fun of or left behind by the other dogs which I didn’t like. Maybe the dog also has a disability too?
