I absolutely loved this one! This was a slow-burn fantasy romance with fantastic banter, elemental magic, and a world that kept me hooked.
One of my favorite parts was seeing the hue magic come to life. The four elemental families are tied together by sacrifices that are anything but small, and I loved uncovering the history behind what each family had given up. With evil on the rise, they know they’ll need all four elementals including the long-lost Earth elemental they’re desperately searching for to have any hope of stopping what’s coming.
Aidenar starts off as your typical charming playboy, but everything changes the moment he meets Nerissa. What I loved most was that he truly saw her for who she was and wanted every part of her, not just the powerful reputation that surrounded her. Nerissa was such a strong heroine. She carried the weight of her family’s responsibilities because of her brother, and watching her grow into her power and confidence throughout the story was so rewarding.
If you enjoy slow-burn romance, witty banter, elemental magic, and a quest filled with mystery, found family, and high stakes, I definitely recommend picking this one up.

Seriously Nerissa is so bad ass, she takes no nonsense and even though she feels out of her element for most of the book she takes it all in her stride and never backs down. And the banter between her and Aidenar makes their chemistry sizzle and is so much fun to read. I loved how he just kept popping up wherever she went 😂
There is a lot of intrigue between who Nerissa will chose.. Aidenar and Dricus, blonde V dark vibes, sunshine V grumpy. Chose who you will but I was team Aidenar from the start 🤭🖤

The author of this book told me if I didn’t like it, then leave it at a bus stop somewhere. Did I leave it there? Nope. It’s going on my shelf where it rightly belongs because THAT book I enjoyed.
This is a slow burn enemies to lovers romantasy about elemental magic, court intrigue and a sort of love triangle.
For someone relatively new to the fantasy, It’s books like these that are making me really enjoy the genre.
Every 5 years there is a gathering of the 10 noble families in the White City. They discuss business, politics and elect a new regent.
Our FMC Nerissa is tasked with travelling over from the islands to represent her family to try and negotiate trade agreements and she wants to find a cure for her ill brother.
The only way I can describe Nerissa is the fact she’s an absolute badass. She’s powerful, she’s ruthless and she’s mature for her age. She doesn’t feel weak at all.
Arriving in the White City we have politics, whispers and lies. We also have a slow burn sort of enemies to lovers arc.
What I loved about this book was the magic system. It’s elemental magic with a twist. The magic and power is enclosed in various precious stones and jewellery. For example diamonds command wind, sapphire water, Emeralds earth and Rubies fire.
But are there people who can weild the elements without stones? Youll have to read it and see!
The romance arc was definitely a SLOW burn and it was interesting to see the dynamic between Nerissa and her love interest play out.
It was a nice change to see the FMC teaching the MMC.
I personally would have chosen the other guy but I think that’s because I love fire so I hope we get to see more of him in book 2.
There was a particular character I enjoyed a lot in this book, but she doesn’t come into it until towards the end and that is Mina. She felt very matriarchal but caring, not like Cassandra, we don’t like Cassandra.
What comes next is a deadly plague which is coming for everything and everyone. We have an enemy that people didn’t know existed, and we have a battle to prepare for.
And I ate this up in such a short space of time and give this 4.5 stars.
Did I mention Evelyn is an indie author and this was her debut? Go support her ❤️

I came across Tides of Shadows by Evelyn Hope quite by chance; through a TikTok video; and I’m genuinely glad I did.
There is something refreshing about discovering an indie fantasy that is both engaging and easy to slip into. From the very beginning, the story feels accessible without being shallow. The world-building is clear, the magic system well-defined, and the plot unfolds in a way that keeps you turning pages without confusion or unnecessary heaviness.
One of the things I appreciated most is how readable it is. This is the kind of book you can devour in a short span of time (I finished it in two days while working full-time), which speaks to how smoothly the story flows.
The magic system, in particular, stands out;it feels structured and intentional, with a sense that it will deepen even further in future installments. You can already sense that this is only the beginning of something larger.
And a small but very welcome detail: for once, the male lead steps away from the usual dark, brooding archetype. It’s such a simple shift, yet it makes the dynamic feel fresher.
Of course, as with many self-published works, there are a few minor language inconsistencies. However, these never detract significantly from the reading experience, and they are easily understood within the context of independent publishing, where authors often carry the full weight of creation on their own.
Overall, this was an enjoyable and promising start to the Dominium Saga. I’m genuinely curious to see where the story, and its world, goes next.

Ok i am so pleased i read this book, and i think beginner fantasy readers would love this as well, its easy to follow nothing gets over complicated with the magic system used.
Even as a seasoned reader and a massive fantasy/romantasy reader this just hit a spot i think i needed.
The tension and banter between the MMC and the FMC brilliant, the tension between done well, the spice when it happens done perfect for the the MC’s.
I defiantly think theres more going on behind the scenes with the baddies, i dont fully trust Dricus purly because he keeps secrets.
Malric i hope he gets what he deserves the dream hopping invader that he is gives me major ICK!
Again i am so grateful this author sent me her book! Because i ate it up, it was already on my list to read before the author sent me a message!

I recommend this book to anyone looking for a unique and consuming story. Once I got into it, I couldn't put it down!
The FMC is awesome and very well written - not like the alleged "badass" FMC's who only whine and complain. Nerissa is very likable, smart, and uses common sense. And who knew I'd enjoy a blond MMC so much??? 💛Don't worry....there's a dark and shadowy MC to keep it balanced. 🖤
This is a romance forward story, and the slow burn is perfect. Other than a few editing errors, you'd never know this was a debut novel. My only criticism is that the language and writing style are a bit odd at times. Making every thought its own sentence slowed the flow of the story at times. More contractions would have helped, as well.

This book introduces a world where jewels of precious stone hold power and families of different regions play court games to gain the upper hand. The main male character is a rake who is unapologetic about his conquests and the banter between them is mostly her shutting him down.
This book isn’t heavy with its world building but offers just enough to keep it interesting and unique.
The main female character does the magical training for once and it was a nice little way to make this book stand out from others. First book so we do have to wait for the story to continue.

This book had me intrigued right from the start. Nerissa our FMC has been raised on an island where she’s had to grow up and be tough. She never wanted to be one of the ladies dressed up and looking pretty. She’d rather wear trousers and just get on with things.
She has to travel to the White City to attend a gathering of families where she has to seek alliances for her family The white city is full of people trying to rise within the social ladder and is full of gossip and backstabbing people.
Although there is elemental magic within this world and certain families have magic over a certain element the vast majority of people have to use crystals to help power their magic whereas there are only a couple of people who can master magic without these crystals. Nerissa being one of them.
Whilst at this gathering she realises that she hates the majority of people here but also finds out that two males have got magic like hers but over different elements.
Nerissa as fab as an FMC at one point one of the Lords tries to force himself upon her and she breaks his nose with blood going everywhere. Because she is so different, the men want to conquer her and the women hate her.
Dricus has magic over fire and Aidenar has magic over wind. Dricus is your dark broody mmc and Aidenar is you golden child with silver hair. Nerissa and Aidenar fall for each other but honestly, I’m not 100% sure where this is going to go. Aidenar is completely obsessed with Nerissa but it all happens quite fast between them and I’ve just got a feeling that there’s more gonna happen with him throughout the next book. Either that or I am just looking too much into this relationship.
This book was quick paced it kept me engaged the whole way through yes a lot of the story was to do with the Catherine and what was happen around that but also there is a plague that Nerissa and her dad figure out what’s happening. But even though a lot of the book was centred around the white city. It still kept me engaged the whole way through to the point that I am absolutely desperate for book 2 to find out what happens.

I found the book through videos on FB and TT. interesting plot, unique magic system. BUT the book needs editing- the writing is undercooked, especially visible when reading the dialogues. Romance was underdeveloped, the second MMC was barely there, love triangle didn’t convince. It has potential though

I could NOT put this beautiful story down! The world-building is AMAZING. The magic system was intriguing, not the same old same old! Miss Evelyn Hope’s writing style is so descriptive she sucks you in quickly and then you’re hooked.
Aidenar is just a cad. I wanted Nerissa to unleash she wit and slap him upside the head with her power, knock him down a peg or three.
Dricus is super mysterious, intriguing from the moment he steps on scene. I yearn to know more about him.
This captivating story is one of self discovery, magic and a love triangle. Although this story is not a clean romantasy, it is not trashy and overly descriptive. But it is intimate and beautifully written.
I am EAGERLY awaiting the next book. This was sooo good I purchased the physical book to add to my library. It is on my reread list.

Tides of Shadows introduces a promising high-fantasy world filled with noble families, political tension, and elemental magic—but for me, the experience was a mix of intrigue, frustration, and lingering questions.
One of the strongest aspects of the book is Nerissa. I genuinely liked her as a protagonist, especially the pressure she faces in representing her family at the gathering of the ten noble houses. That setup has a lot of potential and gives the story a subtle political edge that reminded me a bit of Game of Thrones—though in a lighter, more romance-focused way.
That said, the tone sometimes felt inconsistent. The blend of modern language with a high fantasy setting pulled me out of the story more than once. It made it harder to fully immerse myself in the world, which is a shame because the premise itself is compelling.
The character dynamics were… complicated. I really didn’t like Aidenar—and frustratingly, that never changed. I kept waiting for something to shift or for his perspective to add depth, but instead I mostly found myself distrusting him. The possessive male lead trope is already difficult, but pairing that with him openly being involved with other women made it even harder to root for him. Honestly, I kept asking myself: why does Nerissa even like him?
Dricus was another character I struggled to understand. He came across a bit like an “emo” archetype without enough clarity or development to make his role feel meaningful.
The romance is definitely a slow burn, which can be a strength—but here it sometimes felt more frustrating than rewarding. Add to that the constant sense that “everyone is attractive,” and it occasionally tipped into feeling a bit overdone.
The magic system, particularly the use of the amulet tied to elements, was also somewhat confusing. I never felt like I fully grasped how it worked, which made those moments less impactful than they could have been.
Another issue for me was how secrets were handled. Nerissa frequently references her secrets in a vague way without revealing them, which creates distance rather than suspense. Instead of building intrigue, it sometimes felt like the reader was being intentionally kept out of the loop.
As for the ending: the reveal didn’t completely surprise me—I had a feeling it was coming. Still, a part of me was hoping for something different, something that leaned more into emotional payoff rather than predictability.
That being said, I do want to highlight that this is a debut (or early) work by the author—and it’s honestly impressive in that context. There’s a lot of potential in the worldbuilding and story direction, and I actually discovered this book through TikTok, which made it a really fun find.

I LOVED THIS!!
Roll on Book 2 is all I can say.
Without spoilers (of course), we are drawn into a thrilling world of Lords, Ladys, elements and power within these pages.
We have magic - but it is explored differently to any way Ive read before, in a more pure, more natural kind of a way; we have some super strong, super beautiful, SUPER desirable characters - who were all described perfectly and in amazing detail meaning you are able to really picture them, really feel them and really feel WITH them as the story develops; we have some slow-burn romance in a enemies (or maybe not quite full on enemies) to lovers trope; we have a potential love triangle and we have a scattering of some much anticipated, built-up spice (more towards the end of the book).
I mean what more do we need really?!!
It was just fantastic.
I really enjoyed reading this book and I even found myself thinking of the characters and wondering where their paths would lead them when I wasnt reading and was simply going about my day - and that says it all for me.
The story, the characters, the progression really stuck with me and I wanted to know more and to keep reading.

Roll on Book 2 is all I can say.
Without spoilers (of course), we are drawn into a thrilling world of Lords, Ladys, elements and power within these pages.
We have magic - but it is explored differently to any way Ive read before, in a more pure, more natural kind of a way; we have some super strong, super beautiful, SUPER desirable characters - who were all described perfectly and in amazing detail meaning you are able to really picture them, really feel them and really feel WITH them as the story develops; we have some slow-burn romance in a enemies (or maybe not quite full on enemies) to lovers trope; we have a potential love triangle and we have a scattering of some much anticipated, built-up spice (more towards the end of the book).
I mean what more do we need really?!!
It was just fantastic.
I really enjoyed reading this book and I even found myself thinking of the characters and wondering where their paths would lead them when I wasnt reading and was simply going about my day - and that says it all for me.

Tides of Shadows by Evelyn Hope completely swept me away! If you love slow-burn enemies-to-lovers romances, elemental magic, and a romance that takes center stage, this book is for you.
A mysterious plague of decay is spreading across the land, infecting animals and destroying everything in its path. The only hope of saving the world lies in bringing the Elementals together before the darkness consumes them all.
Nerissa, the Lady of the Sea, travels from the islands to the White City desperate to save her family and her brother, who has fallen deathly ill. Unlike the other noblewomen at court, she's been trained as a warrior for years. She's fierce, determined, and refuses to let anyone stand in the way of her mission. She needs contracts to earn money for her family and access to the Regent's libraries and healers in hopes of finding a cure for her brother.
The last thing she needs is the distraction of Dricus, the noble warrior from the desert borderlands, or Aidenar.
Aidenar, the Regent's charming and infamous son, unexpectedly develops elemental air magic and asks Nerissa to train him. She reluctantly agrees, hoping it will lead to valuable shipping contracts for her people. What starts as a reluctant partnership slowly evolves into one of my favorite romances. The tension is incredible, the slow burn is perfection, and Aidenar completely stole my heart. Watching him grow from the carefree ladies' man into someone willing to fight for others was one of my favorite parts of the story.
With an Earth Elemental still missing and the terrifying Fifth Elemental of Darkness threatening to unleash even more destruction, the stakes couldn't be higher.
This book delivered everything I love in a romantasy: rich elemental magic, compelling characters, fantastic world-building, high stakes, and a romance that had me smiling the entire time. Evelyn Hope has created a world I never wanted to leave.

I picked this book up for one very specific reason…the MMC.
I kept seeing videos from Evelyn Hope’s Facebook page, and let’s just say the marketing worked. The MMC had me intrigued enough to give this book a chance, and I’m so glad I did.
One of my favorite things about Tides of Shadows was the balance between fantasy and romance. There’s enough magic to make the world feel fresh and unique, but not so much that you’re overwhelmed with pages of worldbuilding before the story gets going. The concept of magic being stored in gemstones was especially interesting and felt different from anything I’ve read before.
I also really enjoyed both the FMC and MMC. Their chemistry felt natural, and I liked that their relationship was built on growing trust and tension instead of being rushed just to get to the romance. It wasn’t an agonizing slow burn, but it also didn’t skip over the moments that made me want to root for them.
The ending struck a nice balance, too. It’s enough of a cliffhanger that I’m already looking forward to book two, but it doesn’t leave you completely miserable while you wait. You get a satisfying stopping point while still feeling excited to see where the story goes next.
Overall, this was a really enjoyable read that left me wanting more from both the characters and the world. I’m excited to continue the series and see where Evelyn Hope takes it next.

I thoroughly enjoyed this one full of intrigue, impending dread and foreboding, family dynamics and elemental magic. With the 10 families it gives GoT vibes as they come together to elect a new Regent. Nerissa is there to shore up her family's failing fortunes and to try a build new trade alliances. She's no pampered lady though, she's no nonsense and practical.
Nerissa was for me one of the absolute highlights. This is how you write a commanding FMC, capable, intelligent, adept at fighting, magically powerful, ruthless when needed but also compassionate. Mature beyond her tender years. No shrinking violet here. I loved the magic system, the use of jewellery and gemstones to amplify elemental magic.
The romance was good, the push and pull, Aidenar, the MMC was a bit of a twat at first, spoiled, cocky, a womaniser, but he does redeem himself. Its a slow burn but I prefer that. With an existential threat facing the kingdom we await book 2. Very enjoyable.

OMG what a find! I discovered this book on tik tok and thought to give it a try. LOVE IT! I went back to check out the scenes from the book, it's like a book and movie together!
The story is giving Game of Thrones vibe but more modern, with all court conflicts. I really liked the FMC! Rarely I find them not annoying, so this was something fresh! I liked Nerissa and Aidenar dynamic with him discovering his powers. Usually it’s the guy that is all knowing and powerful, here it was really nice to see it from the other side. I loved the slow burn and pacing! And also the intimacy trope, i think it was really nicely done.
I cannot wait for the second one!

This was a great start to a series filled with elemental magic, political intrigue, and secrets.
I loved the magic system, where most people rely on elemental jewels to wield power, while a rare few are born with the ability and need no jewels at all.
Nerissa, Aidenar, and Dricus each bring their own mysteries to The White City, and I was constantly questioning who could be trusted. The political maneuvering and unfolding secrets kept me turning the pages.
I especially enjoyed Nerissa's determination as she navigates a world that doesn't readily accept strong, capable women. I'm excited to see where this story goes next!

strong FMC
I love a story with a strong FMC. I like her interaction with Aiden they are truly meant for love. I cannot wait to read the next book and find out more about Malic. Now that she knows who the earth wielder is I am curious to see how she is found. Also, her power. I am wondering if she can see the future and the past and if she can successfully penetrate someone mind.

It would good - i enjoyed reading it but i felt like it could have been wayyy better if more details and descriptions were used. Some stuff was just coasted over and had the author spend a bit more on the emotion and details of the moment it would have enhanced the story. This is book 1 in a series. I have no ideas how many books are intended. I likely will not read the next one.

This was a captivating read that demanded my full attention from start to finish (binge-worthy-read). The MMC is incredibly compelling, and the FMC’s strength really drives the story home. I’m eagerly anticipating the second book!

10/10 recommend easy read for a comfy night on a sofa. Advances at a good pace for my liking without being too long. Ends at a cliffhanger without leaving too big of a book hangover waiting for the next one. Loved it and can't wait for next one.

Loved this book! The plot kept building to the point that I genuinely wondered how everything could possibly be wrapped up before the last page. The vocabulary was refreshingly unique, and I was all in on the love triangle. So many cliffhangers at the end! No spoilers, but I’m still holding out hope for Dricus. Also, I love supporting indie authors—definitely give this one a read!

Overall, I enjoyed the book—a number of great things happening in it. The MMCs were entertaining and the world building caught my attention. The edition I read had a distracting number of errors—and I hate that for the author. There was a little bit of pettiness that gave it a young audience feel that kept me from really loving it. But I will likely read the next one.

July 31, 2026DNF at 70%. I almost DNF’d this earlier in chapter 4 but kept going. The plot just couldn’t keep me interested and it as slow moving. No romance really and not much chemistry. It was disappointing that nothing really progressed. I have to DNF this one although I did like the FMC.

Dnf at 92% which is disappointing that I couldn't persevere. It was just slow moving and zero chemistry in the romance department. It has all the hallmarks of a good fantasy novel. I believe some good editing could help make things a bit more exciting.

loved it, I have to admit I was expecting a little more shadow daddy but none the less, it's up there with one of my favourite books I've read this year already!
