A Shield Maiden’s Earl: Scottish Fantasy Historical Romance

Rate this book
When a fierce shield-maiden touched by the Valkyries is forced to marry a powerful Norwegian earl, fiery passion ignites, and destiny unfolds.

Born of seers and Vikings of old, I never could have imagined my father someday ordering me to hand over my shield and blade to the man he made me wed. Nor could I have fathomed that man would be Earl Soren Dahl. A warrior chieftain known for his battle prowess and incredible feats, who has long wanted me. When he arrives on my shores to claim me, I expect to despise him, yet he sets my blood afire. More telling, my mystical talisman claims we are fated.

From the moment I laid eyes on Freya Helvig, as a child, I knew she would someday be mine. Though it took years of making a name for myself and building my tribe into one of the most formidable strongholds in the Kingdom of Norway, I finally claimed her. Or at least I tried. My beautiful, feisty bride-to-be is a force to be reckoned with. A force I welcome, ready to go to battle and conquer her heart, no matter what it takes.

Brought together by the Norns, Freya and Soren navigate the ever-changing landscape of thirteenth-century Scandinavia, amid love and destiny. Brought together and torn apart by the whims of magic and mortal men, by King Hákon and the Battle of Largs, ushering in the beginning of the end of Norse rule over Scotland. Will Freya and Soren be lost to each other in the end? Or will they survive all that’s determined to separate them?

This book was very fast-paced. It solely focuses on the romance between Freya and Soren, and some events that surrounds them. It felt like an insta-love at first, but the story just moves very fast. I love the writing style in this one, very easy and straight to the point to read. I didn't like Freya at first, and Soren was a favorite, as he really tried to pursue Freya.

Of Scots and Vikings

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Freya Helvig is born of seers and Vikings of old. So when her father orders her to hand over her shield and blade to the man that he has ordered her to wed she is not happy, and she could never have fathomed that the man she would we'd was Earl Soren Dahl. A battle hardened warrior chieftain known for his incredible feats on and off the battlefield who has long wanted to marry her. When he arrives on her shores to claim her, she expects to not like him at all, yet he already sets her blood on fire. More telling is the fact that her mystical talisman warms telling her that they are fated to be together.

Soren knew from the moment he laid eyes on Freya Helvig as a child, that some day she would be his. Even though it took many years to make a name for himself and build his tribe into an amazing stronghold. But now he can finally claim her as his wife and boy she is a force to be reckoned with.

Now Freya and Soren have to navigate the ever changing landscape of thirteenth-century Scandinavia, amid love and war. They will have their bonds tested like no other with the battle of Largs. Will Freya and Soren be lost to each other before their love can blossom? Or will they survive the bonds of destiny and come together and live a happy life?

Sky Purington is one of my go to authors and this book is one of the reasons why. She writes about feisty women and the equally strong men they end up loving. I was utterly captivated by this book and I had such a hard time putting it down at night. One of the first things I did when I woke up was to take some time to relax and read this phenomenal book. Thank you once again Ms. Purington for taking me away from the stress of daily life. All in all I would recommend this book to historical readers everywhere.

Overall: A magic filled historical romance with a strong heroine, a soft but devoted hero, and just enough spice. A must read for fans of Vikings TV show.

Review: There’s something deeply satisfying about a story where fate quietly weaves two lives together over time and A Shield Maiden’s Earl leans fully into that charm. Freya and Soren first meet as children and watching their paths circle back to each other years later gives the romance a sense of inevitability that feels both comforting and earned.

Freya is easily the standout. She’s strong without being hardened, capable without losing her emotional depth. It’s refreshing to see a heroine who holds her own while still allowing space for vulnerability. Soren balances her beautifully. He’s steady, charming, and deeply devoted in a way that never feels overdone. Their dynamic carries the story.

The romance itself hits a nice middle ground: the spice is present and engaging, but it never overwhelms the emotional core. It enhances rather than distracts.

The writing can feel uneven at times. Some sentences come across as clunky, occasionally pulling you out of the immersion. There’s also a stylistic choice where chapters end on withheld information with lines like “His answer did not surprise me” only for the actual answer to be revealed in the next chapter. While this creates momentum, it started to feel repetitive and a bit frustrating.

One of the more intriguing elements beyond the central romance is Astrid. There’s just enough of her story to spark curiosity, and I found myself wanting more of her perspective and future arc.

Thank you NetGalley, Sky Purington, and Dragonblade Publishing for this ARC.

We have a seer, warrior and a beautiful woman in Freya Helvig.
Her father has protected her in the later part of her life when he had her trained to be a fierce warrior. He is finally letting her wed Earl Soren Dahl childhood playmates and some say soul mates but time and her father separated them!
Freya has secrets but she also is gifted along with her sisters to see upcoming events.
She is angry with Soren when accepts that her father would not let her wed unless she surrender her shield and blade. This definitely becomes a point of contention between them! But Soren has loved Freyja since they were young so he will take her anyway he can.
Once they are wed they are tested before and after first by circumstances that send Soren into battle and by Freya seeing into the future that this decision will come with great consequences. Soren and Freya delay becoming fully man and wife as Freya has secrets that she is reluctant to share!
Freya memory of a childhood trauma is missing so Soren’s first in command has no trust for her! This story is fast paced and has elements of fantasy and family!
Their love is so strong it transcends time and space! Bravo who’s next?

A Shield Maiden’s Earl is a bold and engaging blend of historical fantasy and romance, bringing together strong characters, emotional tension, and a richly imagined setting. Sky Purington crafts a story that feels both epic in scope and deeply personal in its character journeys.
What makes the book stand out is its heroine. Freya’s strength and independence, combined with the challenges she faces, create a compelling and dynamic character arc. Her journey is filled with both internal conflict and external pressure, making her story especially engaging.
The relationship at the heart of the narrative adds depth and intensity, balancing passion with emotional growth. Combined with the historical and mythological elements, the story offers an immersive experience for readers who enjoy romance with strong world-building.
A captivating read for fans of romantasy, Viking-era settings, and character-driven love stories filled with tension and heart.

Freya, a fierce shield maiden, and Soren, now a great leader to his people are getting married! Whoop whoop. Freya is unhappy because she has to give up her blade and shield while Soren is very happy because he has been in love with Freya since they were children.

This was a quick read. The first half of the book was a slower pace that was easy to follow and the last half seemed sped up. The ending seemed a bit rushed and I felt like it lacked a lot of detail. This book gave off a cozy feel as all of the conflicts were easily and quickly resolved. I went into this book thinking Soren would have to fight to win over Freya, but she fell in love with him so fast. One of the tropes said this is an enemies to lovers, but I disagree, Soren and Freya were never enemies.

Overall this was an okay book, it wasn't terrible and the writing was fine. I think I will skip on the rest of the books in the series because I can already guess what happens just from this one.

Bound by Destiny
This is an enchanting historical fantasy romance about two people drawn together by love, fate, and forces neither of them fully understands. Freya is forced by her father to lay down her blade and shield and enter a marriage she never chose. She already knows her husband-to-be from childhood, but she doesn’t realize just how deeply and mystically their lives are intertwined. As long-buried connections begin to surface, what once felt familiar becomes something far more profound—and far less easy to ignore.
I could not put this story down. It pulled me in quickly and kept me turning pages. The romance is compelling, the stakes feel both personal and epic, and the blend of historical setting with fantasy elements adds richness to the emotional journey. I would recommend it to readers who enjoy historical romance with fate, magic, and a sense that love has been building long before the story begins.

I’m really into Vikings/medieval romance so I enjoyed this book.
Freya and Soren we’re good characters - the first a strong heroine but with a bit of vulnerabilites, which it’s refreshing in a world of strong heroines with nothing to add.
The latter is a strong viking chieftain but with a soft spot, in love with Freya since his childhood. I especially liked that he was almost a “beta” type of MMC, waiting for her lady to consumamate after the marriage and returning her shield and sword.
I enjoyed the writing but I felt that this book needed some more pages to be fully developed. In particular the political plot needed more expansion, it felt a bit rushed. Nonetheless an enjoyable read.

This Viking shield maiden childhood best friends to lovers really leans on the mythology/fated mate stuff. I think I would have preferred more of Soren and Freya’s relationship to show that they are destined for each other rather than outside “signs.”

The two things that Soren did upon their marriage (returning to her her shield and sword, and waiting until she was ready for consummation) were a great start, but then it felt like their “destiny” of being together was more important than their actual relationship.

I received an ARC of this book for free, and I freely offer my opinions of this book.

A Viking historical arranged marriage romance between a strong fmc who's a shieldmaiden and a chieftain with daddy energy. It felt a bit rushed, but for a novella-sized book that's fairly expected. I loved how respectful the relationship was, too often in historical romance the realities of the era are used to excuse rough treatment of women. The spice was medium level. The relationship was fairly low on angst. The writing is stylized to give a bit more archaic feel, as is common in historical romance. A good first entry to the series, however I'd prefer if the book was a bit longer and more emotionally intense.

love a good Viking romance, especially when it blends history, adventure, and a strong emotional connection between characters. I couldn’t really get into this one though. The world building was great and very immersive, and the writing style itself was fine and easy to follow. The only thing that really held me back was the way the characters spoke. The use of words like “tis” and “twill” kept pulling me out of the story. It made the dialogue feel less natural and harder for me to stay engaged, which ultimately affected my overall enjoyment of the book.

Thank you netgalley for an advanced readers copy

If you're looking for a quick and fast read this is the book. We love a Norse/Viking esc romance and this fits the bill. Takes a bit to build up the world but once you get there it's nice to dip your toes in.

Unfortunately this book just wasn't for me. The pace is too rapid, we kind of skip through a ton of events so fast its hard to feel attached to the characters. The magic system could have been cool if it was used for more than an ex machina out of death for both the main characters, and the way they talked threw me a bit as well.

A Dramatic Emotional Love Story Not to Miss
A fascinating story with a bit of mystical magic for two wonderful characters that took me back into highland folklore.
The passion between Freya and Soren is emotionally driven with a plot that is extremely exciting as we follow them from childhood to a very thrilling happy ending with a hint of more to come.
🚩Mature Advisory:2/5

Freya and Soren, once childhood friends, meet again years later in an arranged marriage. Lucky for them they still like each other...a lot. Steamy romance is an understatement.
Apart from the over the top adulation I enjoyed the journey from Norway to Scotland and the magic of the old gods.
Well written and perfectly paced this was a cute quickie.
