Introduction
“I have a feeling you have saved me with your love, or that I have saved myself by falling in love with you”
For everyone who has loved and lost, for everyone who thinks love will never come in your life and for everyone who has fallen in love harder than you ever expected you could, this is the book for you. “Saved in Sri Lanka” written by Devika Fernando is the first novel by the author, that I read and I look forward to reading more of her works. It is a beautiful, endearing and a passionate novel, which will resonate with you as a reader. A love story laced with visual and graphical representation of Sri Lanka, its various culture, tradition and history. A story of a woman, her inner conflicts and a very true account of societal pressure, expectations and patriarchy.
Overview

Once back in her homeland, she is bound by responsibilities and is forced to be engaged to a man, whom she neither loves nor respects in the least. Her only solace is her job as a tour guide, which brings her happiness as she travels along with tourist giving them her deep knowledge and insights about the little island in the Indian Ocean, her home and kind of her prison, Sri Lanka. It is in one of her tours that she meets, Daniel. Daniel is everything, a woman would want, sexy, intelligent, compassionate and most importantly FORBIDDEN. Sepalika is irresistibly drawn to this attractive young man from Ireland and they bond over their mutual love for history. While Daniel does not lose any chance to show what Sepalika means to him, she is torn between her heart’s desire and the commitment she has already made for the sake of her family. Critical Analysis
The very first thing that I felt while reading this book was how much I was able to relate to the story and that feeling remained with me until the last page. This novel touched my heart. Sepalika’s story is a story of every girl who in spite of being independent and successful is expected to do certain things, in the name of culture, tradition and marriage. The author has developed a very authentic character and I could feel Sepalika’s constant struggle. I applaud her diligence and she is definitely my favourite character from the book. The writing is subtle, easy and the author has used the right amount of intrigue as the story moves forward. The portrayal of relationship between Sepalika and Daniel is so genuine and the tension and chemistry between the two of them is equally palpable. After reading this book, I felt like I practically knew nothing about Sri Lanka, despite being neighbours. This book has changed my perception of Sri Lanka and the author has done such a wonderful job in the description of the country’s art, culture, history, flora and fauna. She has made the country come alive through her beautiful words. The depiction of all the places mentioned in the book is truthful (I looked up on the internet) and that kind of knowledge come only from ingenious research, which I think the author has done stupendously. There are lot of historical reference and snippets of both Sri Lanka and Ireland, which history buffs like me will enjoy immensely. I loved the reasoning’s and profound discussions between Daniel and Sepalika, their conversations were such a delight to read. I admired the fact that they could discuss on any topic be it political, historical or cultural. My favourite being there discussion on the concept of arrange marriage and the treatment of guest in the country. (Again because it was so relevant). At first, Daniel seemed aloof but he grew on me. I absolutely loved the Gaelic endearments he used for Sepalika that was my swoon point. I must say the author has presented a very simple yet pertinent story in a very fascinating, splendid and riveting way.
The thing that bothered me was the ending it seemed abrupt and unfulfilling. Although it was a good ending, I expected a little more conflict. I feel that the ending prevented this novel from being a great love story, it was a rather a flat ending, which did not leave a lingering feeling. I also think that may be an epilogue would have been a lovely addition, as I would have loved to know how things turned out for our main protagonist. Apart from that it would have been nice, if a little more effort was done in the development of secondary characters especially, Sepalika’s fiancé Mahesh. I would have also loved a meaningful role of sepalika’s mother in the story, I did not like the fact that Sepalika was left alone to fend for herself especially when her family was in such a crisis and she had nobody except for her mother to depend on.
Conclusion/ recommendation
To be honest I enjoyed reading this novel, yes! It has a few shortcomings but it was engrossing, gripping and I learned many new things about my neighbouring country Sri Lanka. In addition, it has a very attractive cover, which instantly caught my attention, and therefore I picked up this book. It is one of those books, which will make a lazy summer afternoon exciting and full of adventure. I recommend this book to everyone who is looking for a sweet and moving story, which will keep you hooked and make you believe that love can come in your lives without giving you any notice. However, when it does come knocking at your door you must never let it go after all at the end, our perseverance will pay off and love will always prevail.
P.S- I am very thankful to Devika Fernando, the author of “saved in Sri Lanka” for providing me a copy of this book in exchange of my honest opinion.
