Devika Fernando

Almost as soon as Devika Fernando could write, she imagined stories and poems. After finishing her education in Germany and returning to her roots in Sri Lanka, she got a chance to turn her passion into her profession. Having lived in Germany and in Sri Lanka with her husband has made her experience the best (and the worst) of two totally different worlds – something that influences her writing. Her trademark are sweet, yet deeply emotional romance stories where the characters actually fall in love instead of merely falling in lust. She draws inspiration from everyone and everything in life. Besides being a romance novel author, she works as a self-employed German web content writer, as a translator, and as a faithful servant to all the cats, dogs, fish and birds in her home. What she loves most about being an author is the chance to create new worlds and send her protagonists on a journey full of ups and downs that will leave them changed. When she’s not writing, she’s reading or thinking about writing.

I had taken a break from reading any kind of romance, but after having read and adored other shorter pieces of writing by the author, I realised I wanted to read everything she’s ever written and that too all at once! And so, I decided to delve into this little gem. I’m so glad I took that chance!

I dipped in tentatively, then inched my way forward and I didn’t even realise when the book swallowed me whole. My literal reaction when I reached the end was, “Wait, what?! How can it already be over?”

The story is a relatable and very sweet love story, peppered with intense romantic moments and a smattering of angst set against the most picturesque backdrop of Sri Lanka and it’s rich culture and heritage.

While Daniel dazzles as the perfect Irish gentleman, with his swoon-worthy accent, rugged handsomeness and kind nature, Sepalika is the one who truly has my heart. The contrast between her demure nature and fiery spirit makes her the perfect heroine and makes me want to befriend her, protect her and be her all at the same time. Sepalika is earthy, ethereal and alluring: all the things that Devika’s descriptions make me feel about Sri Lanka as well. I love how her delicious descriptions of the places and the characters bring together the warm, vibrancy of Ireland with the soothing, idyllic beauty of Sri Lanka.

This book is truly a treat for the senses! Devika weaves words together in a way I have rarely seen anyone do. Her rich vocabulary, vivid descriptions and absolute command over the language leave me spellbound and alternating between wanting to savour it slowly and wanting to feverishly devour it all.
She writes with a finesse that shines throughout the story, be it through the way she depicts the intensity of the chemistry between the characters or the raw simplicity of their emotions. There’s much to be said about the gentleness of the descriptions in the story. Devika’s carefully chosen words come together like precious pearls on a string. They instantly create a feeling of calm, like listening to the soft pattering of raindrops or the gentle lull of waves breaking on a seashore.
I could go on about all the things I loved about the book, but then this would run on for pages. I will just say this though; if you’ve never read Devika Fernando before, you might want to change that now.

THE STORY

Sepalika is a Sri Lankan who works as a tour guide in her own country. She’s passionate about history and enjoys her job, even though she would have preferred to live in England. She had tried to escape the small island, but had been forced to return due to family circumstances. The same circumstances that had compelled her to get engaged to Mahesh, the son of a rich man.

Into her life walks Daniel, a tourist from Ireland. Daniel is a history professor on his way to Australia to take up a position there. Soon, the two of them get attracted to one another, history being one of their common interests. But would it ever be possible for Sepalika to get together with Daniel? You will have to read the story to find out. Interestingly, the story has been woven along with a tour of the many places of interests in Sri Lanka as Sepalika plays guide to a batch of foreign tourists.

MY PERCEPTION

There are two things I fell in love with in this latest book by Devika Fernando – and I am not still clear who takes first prize – the description of Sri Lanka and Daniel.

Daniel is handsome, hot, intelligent, sensitive and chivalrous. Can there be a more deadly combination? No wonder Sepalika is unable to stop herself from falling for him, despite her engagement. I must congratulate Devika Fernando for creating such an awesome and believable character. Kudos!

Sri Lanka! I have always been interested in this neighbouring island as I have heard a lot about it from a friend who used to live there and my sister who has been there on a holiday. I have also seen a few travel documentaries about the place. What had always struck me was the greenery. Devika Fernando has brought many sections of the island alive to her readers. The descriptions of the many places of interest in Colombo; Pinnawala; Kandy; Sigiriya; Nuwara Eliya; Yala; Galle; Ambalangoda; Bentota and Anuradhapura; the museums; the gardens; the temples; the ruins; the Buddha viharas – I so loved going on the Sri Lankan tour the author took me on.

I enjoyed reading about the way Sri Lankans treat their guests – very similar to us in India – and the kind of food they serve them.

What was most delicious was the way the romance between the protagonists has been developed. Steamy hot! I have read Devika Fernando’s other books – Kaleidoscope of Hopes; Playing with Fire; and When I See Your Face. I must say that the author gets better and better with each book, Saved In Sri Lanka being the best so far.

I wish that Mahesh’s character had been developed a bit more as he is always there like a shadow but never comes alive. But otherwise, this book is a must read.

Quote from the book – a small section that I really enjoyed reading:

She saw his body tense, and his eyes changed color to a darker slate gray with hardly any blue in it. He laid his hand on the side of her neck where her pulse beat against it like frantically fluttering bird’s wings. When he leaned down, her eyes closed.

The next instant he kissed her. His lips, firm and cool, were barely touching hers. It was a kiss of tantalizing softness, tentative and tender.

When she didn’t scream or shove at him or run, he brushed his mouth against hers again, adding more pressure.

Sepalika wanted more, much more. So she kissed him back, throwing all caution to the wind. With a sigh, he deepened the kiss, angling his mouth, his thumb caressing the hollow at her throat. Her hands came up, searching for a hold, for any way to keep herself from melting under his now firmer but still heart-breakingly gentle kiss. She grabbed the lapels of his leather jacket, pulled herself up, and felt a thousand sensations flood her.

Never had a kiss felt this magical, never had it awakened her lust like this.

It was as if she had lived all life for this moment, as if her lips were connected to every single particle of her body, setting it on fire.

When the tip of his tongue brushed over her mouth, she couldn’t suppress a moan. The sound seemed to come from deep out of herself, and it barely registered because she was so lost in the magic of the moment.

Daniel drew back slightly and whispered her name in what was as much a question as it was a groan.

The sound of her name on his lips, spoken so full of feeling, burst the bubble. Sepalika realized with a start what they were doing, and panic surged through her, obliterating desire.

Letting go of his jacket as if she had touched a poisonous plant, she stumbled backwards until her back hit the doorframe. With a hand to her mouth on which she could still feel his kiss, she stared at him.

His breathing was ragged, and his eyes with the dilated pupils were wide open and wounded before she saw him close himself off.

“Goodnight then…sweet dreams,” he called softly, stepping back with obvious reluctance. When he mentioned the word “dreams”, it reminded her of his previous comment, and she bit her lip. Oh yes, she’d definitely dream of him tonight—if she ever fell asleep, that is.

She...
She is Sepalika. A tour guide in Sri Lanka, who not only mesmerizes Daniel Byrne but even the readers with her knowledge of Sri Lanka. She paints a very picturesque visual of the country. Shrouded under a mysterious past, she comes across as a woman who is looking for love - yet trapped in traditions.

He...
He is Daniel Byrne from Ireland. A tourist. A historian. His love for history is very passionate and endearing to me as a reader. Seeing Sri Lanka through his eyes was like living there, enjoying its greenery and falling in love with the unknown.

The love story…
There is a lot of passion and pain in this story. Sepalika is attracted to Daniel, who is a visitor in Sri Lanka. But she cannot give her heart to him since she is already engaged. An engagement which is more like a punishment to her than love. How did she get into this situation and can she come out of it ?

I have read Ms. Fernando's earlier books (Playing With Fire) and the chemistry between the characters was not so palpable as it is in this one. Ms. Fernando has grown as a writer and this story proves it. Daniel has a very gentle side which draws the reader towards him. When he meets Sepalika she is not free to fall in love. Yet she does. Family values and tradition keeps the lovers apart.

There is a scene here in which Sepalika visits her family house along with Daniel. The brewing of the black tea and Daniel's continuous pleasing of his palate makes me very jealous of him.

The tour of Sri Lanka....
Sepalika's knowledge of Sri Lanka is astounding. As a history student, I loved it. Ms. Fernando has made us visualize The Hakgala Botanical Garden or The Sri Dalada Maligawa with her penmanship.

"She led the group slowly across the brick-paved path on both sides by a wide expanse of lawn. To their left were trees and stonewalls with a few rooftops of old buildings playing peekaboo. To the right, they got glimpses of the lake with its walkway, obstructed by a high metal fence."

I loved the way Sepalika introduced every place to the readers and you could almost hear the voice of a tour guide whenever she was talking about the place. In the voice of Sepalika. Ms. Fernando has shown her readers her art of research. Kudos!

Reasoning

A few assumptions:

"Actually, what I love to read most is poetry."
She stared at him with wide eyes. How was freaking cool that? It definitely made him even more different from the rest of the men. Was seem ashamed of it?"

I wish in the above lines, a line was added giving the reason as to why he could be ashamed of loving poetry. It would have backed up as to why he would be ashamed of the fact for I don't see any reason why a man should be ashamed of his love for poetry.

The resolution of the conflict
Is too easy for me to digest. There was a scope of more emotional display and if the writer had so chosen it could have been of very intensive and a dramatic conflict. I am all for a happy ending but somehow I wanted Daniel and Sepalika to fight their way a bit more. The antagonist gave in too easily, thus diluting the impact of their struggle.

Would I recommend this book?
Any romance lover who loves history will also love this book. I would also suggest those who are planning to travel to Sri Lanka in the near future to read this book. You would fall in love with the place before you reach there.

Something that touched my heart :

Sepalika's father's story. I resonated with him and I would like to use this platform to send a message across to all my readers. PLEASE DONATE YOUR ORGANS. Nowhere in any religious text, it is written that we use the same set in our next life. This is not our religious, political or social responsibility. This is letting the godliness in us live forever. I have donated. Have you?

Saved in Sri Lanka by Devika Fernando is the latest romance offering from this very talented Indie author whose work I have enjoyed in the past.

When I came to know about this book I was first attracted by the cover which made me relive my beach holidays. Then when I read the blurb, I had an inkling that this book would entertain me and I am so happy to say that I was thoroughly entertained while reading Saved in Sri Lanka!

The author has chosen her current country of residence as the place where the story unfolds. We meet Sepalika, a tour guide who also happens to have just the best name in the world after the name of one of my most loved flowers and Daniel, a lone and mysterious tourist. Right from the start, my attention was captured by the book which took me on a tour of Sri Lanka and without leaving my home, I felt like I had visited each and every prominent temple, museum, beauty spots and historical sites in the country!

The author's writing style is simple, vivid and engaging and she is able to create a mental picture in the minds of the readers all through the book. I felt connected with the characters and events and it felt like everything was happening right around me. Devika has done her research of the Sri Lankan history which shows in the book which can serve as a tourist guide and a map when visiting this beautiful island country.

The characters are relatable, strong and have a presence. I loved Sepalika's quiet strength and perseverance. She never lost hope and kept trying to see the positive even when her world was slowly falling apart around her! Daniels was mysterious, quiet and the intellectual type. I love such people and he instantly made a place in my heart. Reading about him and watching the romantic chemistry unfold between him and Sepalika made me sigh in contentment and fall more in love with these two.

I felt angry with Sepalika's relatives who truly symbolize people that are still living in the dark ages and so self centered that they are unable to see how their actions hurt others especially when they are women. I wanted to slap her fiance but he got what he deserved. You will know what I am talking about when you read the book.

The emotional play and the suspense element is beautifully handled and the author was able to keep me at the edge of my seat throughout. Kudos to her on a book well written!

The only place where I felt a bit dissatisfied or say was left curious was by the end. I wanted to know what happened next with these two. Did they go forward with their plans? Did they encounter any more difficulties? I don't want to give away anything but I am hopeful that maybe these two dear characters will make a re-appearance in some future book by Devika Fernanado. Devika, if you are reading this, you know what I want. LOL

4.5 out of 5 to Saved in Sri Lanka by Devika Fernando. I absolutely loved it and strongly recommend it to everyone. Go read and enjoy this romance and take a trip to Sri Lanka without spending even a dime!

I received a copy of the book by the author and I am very thankful to her. The above review is my honest and unbiased opinion and in no way influenced.

his is the first Devika Fernando’s book that I read, and now she is the second most favorite author of mine. (First is Nicholas sparks, always!)

I had no clue about the book and the cover didn’t really convince me, since I do judge the book with covers. But, then when I started reading – I remember the amazed slap I had, when I first visited Taj Mahal. Step by step, I was wondering where is Taj Mahal here, and after few hundred’s when I first saw it, I was spell bound. The same happened with this book. I just smiled throughout, and I really wish this book should never end.

Devika with her flair, takes the readers to an enchanting trip to Srilanka. Now, I don’t need any tourist guide, if am taking a trip, I know about Srilanka really well.

About the descriptions of Sepalika and Daniel: Impeccable and lovely!

I didn’t know, but my mind directly mapped Devika herself for Sepalika and Actor Arnold for Daniel. It is one of the best book, I have ever read throughout my life.

The choice of words, lovely sentence structure, awesome choice of comparisons and what not? I wish I could meet the author for once in my life, truly in love with this book.

I personally recommend this book to every reader I know. Fantabulous job, and am determined to read every book of her.

I just don’t want to reveal more, read the book for the best Srilankan trip – you save a lot in here. An awesome story, about a well-determined women and a nice Irish guy. Am damn sure, all will fall in love with the story!

I rate the book 5/5 overall and few pointers!

Wow Factors: 1) Awesome plot 2) impeccable descriptions and use of words

Frown Factors: 1) Must be the cover, I don’t have anything else to frown on.

Devika Fernando writes romance in a way that makes us experience the magic of love along with the protagonists. The characters falls in love in a slow and endearing manner and the evocative description at times gives goose bumps of a good kind.

‘Saved in Sri Lanka’ is unique because along with the characters, the reader gets to travel through Sri Lanka and experience the exotic tourist locales as well as the customs and way of life there.

Sepalika is an exotic beauty who is a tourist guide in Sri Lanka whereas Daniel Byrne is the typical history professor from Ireland who wants to amass as much as information possible during his short tour of Sri Lanka. Sparks fly between this extra ordinary pair but romance blooms rather slowly, yet steadily.

He is a traveler who has commitments elsewhere; she is hiding her own secrets. Will they find a happily ever after? You have to read the book to understand.
The book is filled with anecdotes from Sri Lankan history, mythology and travel destinations. As told by the expert tourist guide Sepalika, these narrations form an integral part of the book making the reader experience more than a romance. In my opinion it makes the story and characters appear more real.
Daniel Byrne is indeed swoon worthy. Sepalika named after the fragrant night jasmine is a rare beauty both in looks as well as character.
Do pick up the book if you are a romantic at heart and also if you are one who loves travel as well. It will appeal to both the traveler and the romantic in you.

How can you not fall in love with a heroine with the romantic name, Sepalika, a name that she shares with the night jasmine, a flower that is fragrant, magical and fascinating? Daniel Byrne cannot keep his eyes away from the exotic beauty, who also happens to be his tour guide, a job she loves because it “involved being in touch with people from all walks of life.” Initially he is “a silent brooding riddle of an Irishman” who stays at the sidelines, but once he realizes the amount of local knowledge Sepalika possesses, he finds himself looking forward to being with her all the time.
Sepalika has spent five years in London, thrilled because “her mind and heart belonged to countries where a woman had the right to say no, to be herself, and to live.” She returns to Sri Lanka for private reasons, and hence, finds it difficult to take in the ugly side of the country – corruption, politics, deceit and crime. However, she has shackles tying her down to the place, and she wills herself to say, “But the past should stay in the past. I can’t and I won’t go back.”
Her father is suffering from a chronic kidney disease, and when his former boss’ son, Mahesh, takes a liking to Sepalika, his father agrees to pay for her father’s treatment. She is hustled into an engagement to a man with whom she has nothing in common.
Daniel too has his share of bitterness to combat, but as they are thrown together in the beautiful sights of Sri Lanka, the two find themselves attracted to each other. She is like “a moth drawn to the light,” while he finds that he has lost his heart to a forbidden flower, Sepalika, with her perfect name.
Is this just a fling, a one night stand, she wonders. Is she only “another exotic memory, an experience he might connect to some historical fact or other?” Daniel is incensed when he realizes that she is engaged to Mahesh, and storms out of her life, leaving her bereft, for “he knew her mind and owned her heart.” Is that the end of their tender love story that showed such promise?
Devika Fernando is an outstanding writer of romance, as she creates a love tapestry with words, both tempestuous and gentle, with all its ups and downs. Her situations, and the emotions that run through them, are all too real. Daniel with his “polished cheekbones you could cut yourself on” comes across as “a mysterious, history-loving, introverted red-head from Ireland”, but over the pages he reveals his chivalrous, often mischievous side as well. It is no wonder that Sepalika loses her vulnerable heart to him, drawn towards him, until the moment when she realizes that she is fettered to her fate.
Devika could as well have been a chronicler of history as well, so beautifully does she describe the wonderful sights of her country. Her chapters are aptly named after the various cities the tour group travel across – the Elephant Orphanage in Pinnawala, the Lion’s Rock in Sigiriya with its Mirror Wall, the Golden Temple of Dambulla with its 100 feet tall Golden Buddha, the Yala National Park whose King is the leopard, the Kande Vihare Buddhist temple, which houses the tallest statue of Buddha in Sri Lanka and many such marvels.
There are two spots of special interest to Indian readers – the Hagkala Botanical garden where it is believed that Ravana hid Sita away from prying eyes, and the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi tree which was nurtured from the original tree at Bodh Gaya, a branch of which was brought to Sri Lanka by Sangamitta, Emperor Ashoka’s daughter in the 3rd century BC.
Thus, ‘Saved in Sri Lanka’ is a riveting read that captivates even as it informs.

Verdict: A gentle read that leaves the heart in bliss!

"Wow! Just wow!" is a sentiment echoed by the book's main character Daniel Byrne and one that aptly describes my reaction during reading this book.

Having read earlier this year Devika Fernando's brilliant novel 'Forbidden' co-authored with Mike Wells, I knew I could expect a very good read and I wasn't disappointed.

From the first page I was drawn into this delightful romantic novel. Mrs. Fernando writes with an expert command of the English Language and her prose is almost poetic. The plot is well thought out and the character development unfolds like a blossoming flower. Slowly but surely the two main characters, Daniel and Sepalika, both from culturally different backgrounds and seemingly unmatchable slowly experience romantic feelings for each other.

I must say at this point that I do not usually read romance fiction (action thrillers are more my cup of tea) but this story had me captivated. Readers that enjoy travel fiction and insights into history will be bowled over by the amount of historical detail packed into this novel. It will especially appeal to armchair travellers as well as those fortunate enough to have visited Sri Lanka on holiday - I consider myself particularly privileged as I was born there and have visited in person many of the places beautifully described throughout the book.

I particularly enjoyed reading the evocative descriptions of the ancient sacred Buddhist sites at Anuradhapura (Ruwan Weli Seya), Polunarruwa (Gal Vihara) and the Sacred Temple of the Tooth Kandy (Dalada Maligawa).

In addition, readers will enjoy descriptions of exquisite surroundings of flora and fauna in Hakgala Botanical Garden, Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage and Yala nature reserve.

In fact, there is something in this novel for everyone, even for fans of Bryan Adams and Natalie Imbruglia! Look out for Sepalika and Daniel's Karaoke tribute scene - it is wonderfully described and puts you right in the heat of the moment ... and for me, these key scenes, bursting with life and also personal thoughts are what makes this novel special and even inspired me to write a music theme especially for it:
Serendipity - Music theme to 'Saved In Sri Lanka'

Sri Lanka is a fantastic holiday destination and this intelligently written and stimulating book is testimony to that fact. It will also no doubt challenge any pre-conceived ideas that readers may have about romance novels in general and in particular, relationships between couples from vastly different backgrounds, values and beliefs. In the end, we are left pondering - exactly who was 'Saved in Sri Lanka'? Was it Sepalika or Daniel? That's up to the reader to decide.

In summary, my enthusiasm for this novel is genuine simply because it was very well written, thought provoking and therefore I cannot recommend it enough to my friends and family.

All-in-all a very well deserved five stars indeed!

The heroine of Saved in Sri Lanka, Devika Fernando’s latest romance book, is named Sepalika which is Sri Lankan for the Night Flowering Jasmine or Shiuli (which is the name of my website). What better reason to pick up the book then, right? So pick it up I did, and let me tell you that I’m not disappointed at all.

Sepalika turned out to be a feisty woman, courageous enough to pursue a career as a tourist guide due to her interest in the country’s rich history, when most women would be too busy thinking of their complexion. I almost wished she had retorted to her fiancé when he suggested she apply sunscreen and wear a hat “so she doesn’t become too dark” like the other Sri Lankans. Yet I admire her spunk, her willingness to look for a happier future.

Daniel on the other hand, has been portrayed as a history-loving, long-legged Irishman with “polished cheekbones you can cut yourself on”. What draws Sepalika most to him is his Irish accent though, and their common love for world history. Somehow, reading through the first few chapters, I almost wished that I would get a glimpse of some redeemable quality in Daniel and so would Sepalika. When he gave me a glimpse of his chivalrous nature or the mischievous glint in his eye, I was already 5 chapters in, and till then I just had the Irish accent to make do with.

Mahesh, somehow, always felt like a looming shadow. We knew he was there but not quite, his thinking and ideology straight from the dark ages. I’m so relieved that he got what was coming!

I have read most of the novels by Devika Fernando and this one, by far is the best. The book is a double delight for the readers, it takes one to an emotional rollercoaster as well as gives a picturesque window to Sri Lanka’s heritage and sights.

Sepalika (love the name) the gorgeous, smart tour guide gives us a glimpse of traditional plus modern Sri Lanka, and Daniel an absolutely hot Irish hunk, whom I fell for along with Sepalika :) The story takes us to a romantic charming journey through the sandy beaches, temples, forts in Sri Lanka and the conflicting strong attraction of our heroine to Daniel. She tries to resist initially but couldn’t help herself when Daniel also seeks her company. The karaoke scene was the perfect setting to bring them together, making them realize that the deep bond of love is the strongest of all. But reality intervenes and fate takes over Sepalika’s life, creating a rift between the two protagonists.

I have always been a fan of Devika’s writing and her translation of a picture in words, it’s like one is watching a scenic film. Devika gives us detailed insights on the history, politics and religion in Sri Lanka along with the heady dose of Sepalika’s emotional conflict. She has done a commendable job of balancing the tour of Sri Lanka and romance between Sepalika and Daniel. Both the threads get equal attention, and the plot has right mixture of pace and progress of the story. Mahesh is perfect in his foil of money-minded villain.

A highly recommended romance!

Like the blurb says, Saved in Sri Lanka is the story of a tourist guide, Sepalika, and one of her tourists, the Irish Daniel.
The thing I liked the most about this book is how well Devika has explored the tourist guide angle of the story. Daniel and Sepalika's visit to each spot is accompanied by a rich serving of its history. The information parted is enough to spike up the readers' interest, yet not so much that it bores them. I, for one, couldn't keep myself from running to Google. Glad that I did this, for only then did I realize how beautifully has Devika described every thing. The pictures her words painted in my head were pretty close to what is real.
Now coming to the story. In the beginning, it is a very regular story-unpredicatable in some places, but predictable in most. However, the history sprinkled keeps it spiced up. Several secondary characters help take the story forward, but the prime focus stays on Sepalika and Daniel. This is a little disconcerting.
But hang on. Hang on and let the story build for about a 100 pages. Yeah I know that is a little too much, but the way the plot twists after that is just worth the effort that goes into waiting. How events unfold to bring Daniel and Sepalika together, after they've each decided to go their separate ways, is worth reading.
Everything comes together to make this a happy read that will certainly appeal to you if you are romance and history buff.

Saved in Sri Lanka is the first book that I read from the author, and I must say that it was a great start.

This book is a package deal - you get the love story and a virtual tour of Sri Lanka. Both these components of the plot are done very well. I enjoyed how the love story progressed; it was endearing, yet realistic. The virtual tour of the country too was written very well; the author ensures that the reader is not just a distant observer, but that he/she takes the trip around Sri Lanka along with Daniel and Sepalika.

Having said that, I felt the details about the country, slowed down the love story a bit. I really would have loved to read more about the love story, rather than Sri Lanka.

However, that is simply my personal preference; history is just not my thing. But I can see how the track is important to the plot, as Sepalika is a Sri Lankan tour guide, and Daniel, a history professor, and they bonded over their common love for history.

Overall, I enjoyed the author’s storytelling, and I would certainly read more from her.

There is angst, romance and passion, all served up with a dollop of Sri Lankan history. What more could you ask for? Saved in Sri Lanka is a light, easy read that was fun to take along on my own holiday. Strong, well-defined characters made the reading all the more interesting. I enjoyed Daniel but Sepalika stole the show for me. She's strong, take-charge and more than up to taking on society bullies in the form of meddling, nosy aunties. The highlight of this book are the personal, intimate scenes between the couple. They held a charged intensity that had me wishing there was more of them.

What stands out for me more than other romance novels I've read is the level of detail the author, Devika, has shown in depicting Sri Lanka and its incredibly rich heritage. She truly does take you on a tour of the country in more ways than one. I've been to Sri Lanka years ago and I learned more through this book than any exploring I'd managed on my own.

All in all, I enjoyed the book and I can't wait to see what Devika comes up with next!

Not just a sweet romance but also a wonderfully evocative trip to Sri Lanka—an island that tops my vacation wish-list.
The romance between Sepalika and Daniel seems impossible. She is working as a tour guide and is drawn to the handsome Irish tourist who shares her passion for history. He is entranced by his beautiful, charming guide.
But Sepalika, who has studied and travelled in Europe, is engaged to another man—bound to a traditional arranged marriage for the sake of her family. Author Devika Fernando skillfully builds the tension between this seemingly star-crossed couple until the reader is desperate for them to get together!
The cross-cultural aspect gives a unique slant to the conflict that keeps the hero and heroine apart for most of the book. The insights into a different way of life, the descriptions of Sri Lanka and the glimpses into the island’s history made this a fascinating read. I really enjoyed it.

My Review (No Spoilers!)

Read full review at:
http://letusreviewyourbook.blogspot.i...

The story line of the novel is probably the simplest yet the most complicated one I have ever read. Sepalika, a tour guide in Sri Lanka, falls in love with a foreigner, Daniel, on her tour over the course of time. What started off from mere curiosity ends up in pristine love for Daniel. She struggles with her ethics and moral values for a while but in the end fails to hold herself back. Her history lessons to Daniel have the same effect on Daniel. His curiosity towards history and culture of Sri Lanka attracts him towards Sepalika. Does he feel the same, she wonders. And what about the secret she’s hiding from him? This book reminded me of one of the quotes by Rumi,

“The minute I heard my first love story,
I started looking for you, not knowing
How blind that was.
Lovers don't finally meet somewhere.
They're in each other all along.”
~Rumi, The Illuminated Rumi

I really enjoyed reading this novel not only because of the story but also the language. Language of Devika Fernando’s novel, Saved in Sri Lanka, is simple and pleasant to read. It gave me pleasant experience throughout the novel. The metaphors used in the book made me fall in love! If at all I fell in love with Daniel just as Sepalika did, Devika’s metaphors is to be blamed for that.

When it comes to romance of two history geeks in Sri Lanka, you’re surely be given a lot of history lessons. Have you ever been to Sri Lanka? Have you ever been to sandy beaches and seen the beautiful temples of Sri Lanka? No? Well, Devika’s novel, Saved in Sri Lanka, will guide you throughout the island nation. One of the best parts of the novel was history lessons by Sepalika to Daniel. For a history lover, this book is a treasure!

One of the most fascinating things about this book is conversations which are the very foundation of a romantic novel. Devika has done a great job at Sepalika and Daniel’s conversations which varied from Sri Lankan culture to love and arranged marriage debates. Every author, directly or indirectly, sometimes, goes in so much deeper inside a character that he/she confesses or puts forward their opinions on social, political, religious and economic issues. In addition to the beautiful history lessons, some insights into the social, political, economical and religious issues concerning Sri Lanka were indeed provided by Devika Fernando which made the conversations between Sepalika and Daniel more interesting.

The only thing I didn’t like about the book was that Daniel, male lead character, felt alien or a stranger to me even after finishing the novel. Somewhere along the line, even after finishing the novel, I couldn’t possibly understand why Daniel would do what he did. His actions and suddenness of the same lead to confusion. But, on the other hand, I also understand the reason behind it – Devika’s novel demanded a foreigner and so she gave us one. The narration from Sepalika’s point of view was the need of the novel and she did an excellent job at it. The magic of falling in love with someone over the course of time out of love and attraction is captured perfectly by Devika Fernando in Saved in Sri Lanka. Apart from a few spelling mistakes and one place, where Daniel was mentioned as David, the rest of the book was just a perfect romance novel!

Does Daniel feel the same the way Sepalika does? And what about the secret she’s hiding from him?

To find out, read Saved in Sri Lanka by Devika Fernando…

I rate this wonderful book a 3.5 out of 5 mostly for the history lessons and fascinating romance between Sepalika and Daniel. I recommend this book to every romantic novel lover, to the generation which falls for lust rather than love, to the history lovers and to the island lovers. This is a must read for all the Indians who wish to see the beauty of the island nation through the eyes of a Sri Lankan. This is a book not to be missed at any cost!

Huge thanks to Devika Fernando for the review copy! I really appreciate it.

Note: I sincerely apologize to Devika Fernando for the delay in reviewing this wonderful book. But, I believe that a book such as this one deserves a book review which does justice to it. For that exact reason, the delay was caused in the reviewing this book.

Saved In Sri Lanka is a story about a girl who finds love when it is almost impossible for her to cherish it. An unlikely bond forms between Sepalika and Daniel, who is visiting the Island of Srilanka. As they tour the country, this history buff is charmed by Sepalika’s knowledge, charm and quite demeanor. That she is a looker makes it all the more difficult for Daniel to resist, not that he wants to. He keeps finding questions and thoughts about Sri Lanka to ensure she is by his side most of the time. I found it so endearing and cute.

The love unfolds very subtly almost as if it will happen for sure, you are just waiting for them to just come out and say it. The story has all the elements of how difficult is the path of love is. Sepalika yearns to break free and return to the freedom she had earlier yet she is bound by her love. How can one sacrifice one love for another? Truly she has a tough time, trying to keep her distance yet feeling so conflicted about it.

Saved in Sri Lanka is also a book that shares so much about the country that it can also be a really good travelogue about the country, maybe from Daniel’s point of view. I found the descriptions of all the beautiful places they visited a bit much at times, maybe because I like to read about how and what the characters are feeling more than just what they are seeing. Overall the beauty of the place left me with an urge to see Sri Lanka with my own eyes, full marks to Devika for showcasing the splendor of the place. But at times the novel read more like a travelogue rather than the romance it was.

I felt due to all the sightseeing they did, the love story was slow to progress but that is my opinion as the travel was an integral part of the story and yes, you cannot rush love! Finally when things come to a head, the climax makes for a page turner. The lovers will unite or not? Sepalika faces troubles from all sides and her fiancée is no help - yes she has one, he is just another obstacle in the path of love.

The detailed descriptions, the sweet conversations and two beautiful people in a wonderful, picturesque place make for a lyrical read. Devika dabbles in many genres and tends to do full justice to each book. Having read most of them :D I have come to expect so much from her books and she does full justice each time.

Do pick Saved In Sri Lanka for a picturesque, adoring, cute love story.

I had the strangest feeling while reading this book for review. I simply could not rush it, no matter how I tried. I found it fascinating, spellbinding in fact. Every time I opened this ebook to continue reading, a feeling of peace and tranquillity washed over me. The love story of Daniel and Sepalika was extremely compelling and drew me in totally. There are many references in this story to Buddhism and temples, prayer and meditation. I know that the author, Devika Fernando, is a Buddhist and all I can say is that she must meditate for several hours a day, because the tranquillity which I experienced while reading this awesome story was unbelievable. If you are rushing around with a stressful life, this is the book for you. It will slow you down, draw you in and give you the most unbelievable feeling of stress free peacefulness you have probably eve experienced. I could feel a sense of wonder as Daniel and Sepalika explored the ancient palaces and temples of Sri Lanka together, on a journey which never seemed to end. I could literally feel the Sri Lankan heat and sense the serenity of the ancient temples. The story has a straightforward enough plot. Pretty Sepalika has been lured into an engagement which is not of her choosing, but which circumstances and family obligations have forced her to accept. Working as a tourist guide, she encounters the sensitive and thoughtful Daniel Byrne on one of the trips. An Irishman, Daniel is stopping by Sri Lanka en route to Australia. As Daniel and Sepalika tour the ancient temples and palaces of Sri Lanka together, they form a strong bond with each other and discover mutual feelings of attraction. But alas, Sepalika is betrothed to another. What next?
It is a pleasant surprise for me to discover an Asian romance novel with an Irish hero. The gentle Irishman makes an attractive and uttely different hero. With a surname like Byrne, he could be a cousin of mine. I’m Irish by birth and upbringing and a member of the Byrne clan on my mother’s side. I don’t deny that this made the story very attractive for me. But even without the Irish connection, I’d have found this particular book fascinating. In Devika Fernando, I’ve found an author who is a joy to read, with her thoughtful, insightful storytelling. So if you’re stressed out in the summer heat, this is the read to make you chill! Enjoy it and remember, slow down and take it easy. This novel is much more enjoyable that way.

Introduction
“I have a feeling you have saved me with your love, or that I have saved myself by falling in love with you”

For everyone who has loved and lost, for everyone who thinks love will never come in your life and for everyone who has fallen in love harder than you ever expected you could, this is the book for you. “Saved in Sri Lanka” written by Devika Fernando is the first novel by the author, that I read and I look forward to reading more of her works. It is a beautiful, endearing and a passionate novel, which will resonate with you as a reader. A love story laced with visual and graphical representation of Sri Lanka, its various culture, tradition and history. A story of a woman, her inner conflicts and a very true account of societal pressure, expectations and patriarchy.

Overview
Sepalika is young, beautiful, and intelligent. She has an unquenchable thirst for knowledge and history. She has completed her studies in hospitality and tourism in London and is about to start her first job, when an emergency call from Sri Lanka, where her family lives forces her to leave behind the life she has dreamt for herself. Once back in her homeland, she is bound by responsibilities and is forced to be engaged to a man, whom she neither loves nor respects in the least. Her only solace is her job as a tour guide, which brings her happiness as she travels along with tourist giving them her deep knowledge and insights about the little island in the Indian Ocean, her home and kind of her prison, Sri Lanka. It is in one of her tours that she meets, Daniel. Daniel is everything, a woman would want, sexy, intelligent, compassionate and most importantly FORBIDDEN. Sepalika is irresistibly drawn to this attractive young man from Ireland and they bond over their mutual love for history. What started out as an innocent crush turns into something deep and meaningful for the two of them. While Daniel does not lose any chance to show what Sepalika means to him, she is torn between her heart’s desire and the commitment she has already made for the sake of her family. What will Sepalika do? Will she act on her feelings? Or will she let go of Daniel, and lose her chance of real happiness?

Critical Analysis
The very first thing that I felt while reading this book was how much I was able to relate to the story and that feeling remained with me until the last page. This novel touched my heart. Sepalika’s story is a story of every girl who in spite of being independent and successful is expected to do certain things, in the name of culture, tradition and marriage. The author has developed a very authentic character and I could feel Sepalika’s constant struggle. I applaud her diligence and she is definitely my favourite character from the book. The writing is subtle, easy and the author has used the right amount of intrigue as the story moves forward. The portrayal of relationship between Sepalika and Daniel is so genuine and the tension and chemistry between the two of them is equally palpable. After reading this book, I felt like I practically knew nothing about Sri Lanka, despite being neighbours. This book has changed my perception of Sri Lanka and the author has done such a wonderful job in the description of the country’s art, culture, history, flora and fauna. She has made the country come alive through her beautiful words. The depiction of all the places mentioned in the book is truthful (I looked up on the internet) and that kind of knowledge come only from ingenious research, which I think the author has done stupendously. There are lot of historical reference and snippets of both Sri Lanka and Ireland, which history buffs like me will enjoy immensely. I loved the reasoning’s and profound discussions between Daniel and Sepalika, their conversations were such a delight to read. I admired the fact that they could discuss on any topic be it political, historical or cultural. My favourite being there discussion on the concept of arrange marriage and the treatment of guest in the country. (Again because it was so relevant). At first, Daniel seemed aloof but he grew on me. I absolutely loved the Gaelic endearments he used for Sepalika that was my swoon point. I must say the author has presented a very simple yet pertinent story in a very fascinating, splendid and riveting way.

The thing that bothered me was the ending it seemed abrupt and unfulfilling. Although it was a good ending, I expected a little more conflict. I feel that the ending prevented this novel from being a great love story, it was a rather a flat ending, which did not leave a lingering feeling. I also think that may be an epilogue would have been a lovely addition, as I would have loved to know how things turned out for our main protagonist. Apart from that it would have been nice, if a little more effort was done in the development of secondary characters especially, Sepalika’s fiancé Mahesh. I would have also loved a meaningful role of sepalika’s mother in the story, I did not like the fact that Sepalika was left alone to fend for herself especially when her family was in such a crisis and she had nobody except for her mother to depend on.

Conclusion/ recommendation
To be honest I enjoyed reading this novel, yes! It has a few shortcomings but it was engrossing, gripping and I learned many new things about my neighbouring country Sri Lanka. In addition, it has a very attractive cover, which instantly caught my attention, and therefore I picked up this book. It is one of those books, which will make a lazy summer afternoon exciting and full of adventure. I recommend this book to everyone who is looking for a sweet and moving story, which will keep you hooked and make you believe that love can come in your lives without giving you any notice. However, when it does come knocking at your door you must never let it go after all at the end, our perseverance will pay off and love will always prevail.

P.S- I am very thankful to Devika Fernando, the author of “saved in Sri Lanka” for providing me a copy of this book in exchange of my honest opinion.

What can I say about this book I have no words to express .Saved in Srilanka is a very well written book by Devika Fernando. This book acts like a multipurpose app. Saved in Srilanka novel is combination of sweet budding romance between a tour guide Sepalika, the Irish tourist man Daniel and the beautiful places in Srilanka .Devika has described the places in such a way that makes us feel like we are present in the very place and are enjoying the beauty like the Irish man.

The emotions and the situations are designed in such a way that we will not get bored of reading the book. The best part of the book is that the heroine Sepalika does not cry in each and every situation and boldly faces her problems with a small smile on her face .I think the author has given a touch of herself to her character Sepalika in this book. The USP of this book is
• The love letter which Sepalika pens down for the Irish man Daniel when she meets him during the tour.
Over Saved in Srilanka is a wonderful book to read.
Recommended read .To all those who love to read sweet romantic tales.

Saved in Sri Lanka by Devika Fernando
A wonderfully written romance of a tourist guide who falls in love with a man from a faraway land while showing him the marvels of her own country.
A refreshingly different romance that doesn’t make the protagonist go weak in the knees or make them starry-eyed at the sight of the target of their affection. But, wonderfully warms you up and takes you into the lives, emotions, and journey they embark upon.
Daniel, the perfect gentleman is a perfect foil to the uncouth Mahesh and Sepalika would surely be better off without Mahesh or so you would think. But here’s the shocker. He’s the husband-to-be.
I enjoyed reading the easily relatable story and every day when I had to put the book away for meals, or for other errands, I would hate it and would long for more time to read.
Don't just read this novel about a tour guide and a tourist. Instead visit Sri Lanka and go on a roller coaster ride called Love.

This is an extremely well written story. The language is flawless and flows seamlessly. I could easily finish it within a span of 2 days. The special thing about the book is it it takes the reader on a lovely tour around Srilanka. I think it is more interesting to read about a foreign county in fiction rather than a lonely planet guide. That way the book was an effortless introduction to the beauties of Srilanka. The characters were quite realistic and I am sure romantic types can related to the feeling of Sepalika, the protagonist. I must appreciate how the author has even chosen the name of the protagonist with care - Sepalika apparently is the name of a night jasmine flower is Sri Lanka. Given that this book is not by one of the best seller or an all time great authors, I would have easily given 5 stars but for the fact of my unfamiliarity with the romance genre. I am not sure what makes a book good in this genre. As far as I am concerned, while I was impressed with the writing and the detailed description of Sri Lanka, my lack of love for this genre hampered full enjoyment. Probably with the same kind of writing and settings, if the main characters had been a bunch of children solving a mystery instead of a romance, I would gone fanboying her by now.

Irishman Daniel is visiting Sri Lanka and Sepalika is, his group's tour guide...touring around Sri Lanka they begin to bond over their shared love for history.
Sepalika is already engaged, her father is ill, Daniel is headed to Australia but still their hearts crave for each other.
I liked how writer has penned Sepalika's character she is sweet and courageous.
At times, I forgot that Sepalika and Daniel are protagonist and not Sri Lanka.
Writer has beautifully described history and culture of this beautiful country.

A clean, sweet romance with the bonus that the author throws in a free virtual tour of the loveliest parts of Sri Lanka.

Not only did I enjoy the love story that grows - at first slowly, and then exponentially - between Sepalika and her handsome Irishman, but I am determined to visit Sigiriya once before too long!

Devika is past master at handling emotions and building worlds and characters that are believable.
I'm off to Spain next!

Has a book ever made you want to visit a place? That's what this book does for Sri Lanka. :)

The premise sets up our heroine as a tour guide, the perfect way to introduce readers to the many wonders of the country--all while enjoying a sweet romance. I was tempted to read it at my computer so I could look up pictures of the places the tour group visits. LOL!
