Rate this book
She ran from her wedding… straight into the arms of the mountain man who won’t let her go.

I’m Goldfall’s sheriff. I’ve seen it all.
But I’ve never seen a woman in a wedding dress stumbling away from a wrecked car in the mountains.

Cassie Matthews is shaken, scraped up, and clearly running from something. She claims she has no one…

So I take her to the clinic. I offer her a room at the lodge. Instead, she begs to stay with me… in my cabin. Under my protection.

I tell myself it’s temporary, just until her car is replaced and she’s ready to move on.
Except the longer she’s here, the more I want her to stay.

And when her ex-fiancé shows up to drag her back?
He finds out Cassie isn’t alone anymore.
Because she’s mine now… and I protect what’s mine.

Grumpy Mountain Man Protector is a short, steamy runaway bride romance featuring an overprotective mountain man, a curvy heroine with nowhere else to go, and a small town that feels like home. Perfect for a sweet-and-spicy romance snack you can devour in one sitting, with a guaranteed HEA.

There’s something incredibly powerful about a story where a woman who has never felt chosen finally meets the man who refuses to let her go—and Grumpy Mountain Man Protector by Grace Arden delivers that emotional punch in the most tender, satisfying way.

Cassie’s story begins in heartbreak.

Standing in a wedding dress that was supposed to mark the start of her forever, she instead overhears words that shatter everything—reminding her of a truth she’s carried her whole life: she’s never really been chosen. Not by family. Not by love. Not by anyone who stayed.

So she runs.

And fate—along with a wrecked car in the mountains—places her directly in Jack’s path.

Jack, the town sheriff, is the kind of man who feels like safety the moment he steps onto the page. Big, steady, a little gruff, and entirely unprepared for the woman in a torn wedding dress who suddenly becomes his responsibility… and then so much more.

What makes this story shine is how gentle it is beneath the protective, possessive exterior. Jack doesn’t overwhelm Cassie—he anchors her. He gives her space to breathe, to feel, to begin healing in her own time. His care isn’t loud or showy—it’s in the quiet moments, the steady presence, the unwavering way he shows up for her.

And Cassie? She’s so beautifully real. Even when happiness starts to unfold in front of her, she doesn’t magically become fearless or completely healed. She’s still learning. Still growing. Still figuring out what it means to be wanted without conditions. That authenticity makes her journey feel incredibly relatable and deeply moving.

Their connection builds through soft conversations, shared silence, and a warmth that slowly deepens into something undeniable. Yes, it’s instalove—but it feels grounded in emotional truth. Two people who didn’t expect love… finding it anyway.

And when her past tries to drag her back?

Jack doesn’t hesitate.

Because for the first time in Cassie’s life… she’s not alone.

✨ Tropes to love:

Runaway bride
Grumpy, protective mountain man
Forced proximity
Found family / small-town warmth
“You’re mine, and I’ve got you” energy
Emotional healing
Instalove with heart

This novella may be short, but it carries so much emotional weight. It’s comforting, hopeful, and full of those quiet moments that make your chest ache in the best way.

If you’ve ever wanted a story where the heroine is finally, fully chosen—and the hero never once makes her question it—Grumpy Mountain Man Protector is one you’ll want to curl up with and not put down.

The story opens on what should be the happiest day of Cassie’s life—her wedding day. Cassie is alone in the world, with no family to lean on, and when she met Garret, she thought he was the one. However, everything shatters in an instant with one overheard conversation. Heartbroken, Cassie runs. The next thing she knows, she’s pulling herself from the wreckage of Garrett’s BMW dazed and shaken, just as a sheriff’s truck rolls up beside her. The man who emerges manages to catch her just as her knees buckle, murmuring “You’re safe now” as he wraps her in his coat. And somehow, despite everything, Cassie believes him. A barefoot bride was the last thing Jack expected to find on the side of the road that day, but from the moment he sees her, instinct takes over. He carries her to his truck to get her to safety, and without even realizing it, something in him shifts. Something protective, unwavering, and deeply certain. When Cassie chooses the quiet comfort of his cabin over the anonymity of a room at the lodge, Jack knows one thing for sure: he’s not letting her out of his sight anytime soon. What makes Jack so compelling isn’t just his protectiveness, it’s his restraint. He never pressures Cassie, never tries to sway her decisions. Instead, he offers her something far more powerful: the freedom to choose, paired with the quiet promise that he’ll stand by her no matter what. In that steady, grounding presence, Cassie begins to rediscover herself. For the first time, she allows her own wants and needs to matter. And when her past finally comes knocking, Cassie doesn’t crumble, she rises to meet it. The girl who fled on her wedding day is gone, replaced by someone stronger, someone who knows her worth. Facing Garrett becomes less about closure and more about clarity, a final, undeniable realization that what she had with him was never real love. Because real love doesn’t leave you broken, it steadies you, lifts you, and lets you breathe. And that’s exactly what she’s found with Jack. With him, it’s not just about safety, it’s about being seen, chosen, and cherished. In his arms, she’s found everything she’s ever always dreamed of and she’s staying exactly where she belongs.

"Grumpy Mountain Man Protector" by Grace Arden kicks off the Goldfall Mountain: Small Town Heat series with a delightful blend of steamy romance and heartfelt emotion. The story immediately grabs your attention as Cassie Matthews, a runaway bride, crashes into the care of Jack Navarro, Goldfall’s gruff but devoted sheriff. The chemistry between Cassie and Jack is seismic, and their journey together is filled with both vulnerability and undeniable attraction, making for a captivating and addictive read.

Arden expertly weaves beloved romance tropes—grumpy mountain man, forced proximity, curve worship, small-town charm, and found family—into a story that feels fresh and engaging. Jack’s protective nature and Cassie’s wounded resilience create a dynamic that’s equal parts tender and passionate. The tension peaks when Cassie’s ex-fiancé returns, but Jack’s unwavering loyalty ensures she’s no longer alone, highlighting the emotional healing and “she’s mine” energy that romance fans adore.

This short novel is perfect for anyone craving a sweet-and-spicy escape, with a curvy heroine finding love and safety in the arms of her mountain man protector. The small-town setting, the emotional depth, and the happily ever after make "Grumpy Mountain Man Protector" a highly recommended romance treat you can devour in less than an hour. Arden delivers a story that is both comforting and exciting—a must-read for lovers of protective heroes and runaway brides.

This novella is such a tender surprise. Cassie, the FMC, enters the story in a wedding dress—but her life has been anything but a fairytale. Abandoned at birth, shuffled through foster homes, never chosen, never kept… her history sits heavy on her shoulders. So when she overhears her groom mocking her in the hallway, the heartbreak is immediate and sharp. She runs, and honestly, who wouldn’t?

Enter Jack, the local sheriff and a big, steady bear of a man who absolutely did not expect a runaway bride in a wrecked Mercedes to land in his day. Cassie is hurt, terrified, and emotionally adrift, and Jack refuses to let her face any of it alone. His quiet strength and unwavering gentleness make him exactly the kind of hero you root for.

Their connection grows through soft conversations, shared silences, and a slow-burn warmth that heats up the physical along with the emotional that feels earned and deeply comforting. I won’t spoil the rest, but the way their story unfolds made my heart feel full in the best way. A beautiful, soothing read—perfect for when life feels heavy and you need something hopeful to hold onto.

This story is short, but wow, so reliable in the sense that the characters seem like so normal. Jack feels like love is no longer a possibility for him and Cassie keeps trying to make herself smaller to fit around the ones that she thinks love her, just because she never felt chosen by anyone. Running away from her wedding and finding Jack was the best thing ever. What I like and find reliable is that even when happiness is in her hands, she is not completely change, she still working on those things that affect her and that is the most normal thing, everything takes time, but it doesn't have to take happiness from you.

small-town setting, instant chemistry, lots of protective energy, and a hero who acts tough but melts for her fast. It’s definitely one of those “he falls first and hardest” stories, with just enough tension and spice to keep it fun without getting super heavy.
The pacing moves quickly (very instalove), but that’s part of the charm. You’re here for the comfort, the swoony mountain man moments, and the fantasy of someone showing up and making you feel safe.
Cute, steamy, and easy to binge. Perfect if you love runaway bride stories, grumpy protectors, and mountain men who become completely obsessed in like two seconds.

Cassie runs from her wedding in a car after hearing her fiancé and best man degrading her. She is in an accident and Jack, the Sheriff comes to her rescue. Cassie was in foster care and never felt like she belonged anywhere. Jack feels protective and they both develop feelings. This was an insta love with some steam. Jack and Cassie belonged together, they each brought out the best in the other. The epilogue and extended epilogue (available on Grace’s website) was the perfect ending to a great story.

This is your typical quickie. Hot spices, alpha male protector, and a woman that is stronger than she realized. I really liked it, but I wish the douche bag had been dealt with in a more physical manner.
