The Weathered Shell

Rate this book
The young man is standing with an arm casually thrown up to lean against the door frame, displaying his bare torso to advantage, his powerful swimmer's shoulders and lean body pale with moonlight. His cocky grin, however, is fading quickly into a look of shock and confusion. Other than a pelt shaped into a sloppy kilt, his legs are bare too, despite the chill winds coming in off the ocean.

"You're not a girl," he says in a gently lilting accent that's like an odd blend of all the coastal voices Derek's ever heard, squinting at Derek like his eyes might somehow be deceiving him.

Unlikely, given his dark beard and broad, well-muscled shoulders, let alone what he's got under his kilt.

Quietly beautiful yearning, acceptance, and peace in this selkie/werewolf Sterek.

Every shell is washed down to sand eventually.

Stiles is a Selkie. Derek a lone wolf living secluded on Celtic shores.

I found this a bit hard to get into and somewhat dragging. The plot seems like it would be straight forward - a Selkie seeking a lonely soul to comfort, but there is a twist ... Stiles believes he's a zero on the Kinsey scale. And so begins this back and forth exploration(?) of Stiles realizing he is bisexual. Maybe a good plot bunny, but it read oddly and Stiles' realization that he is suddenly good with same sex smexing seemed very abrupt.

Even odder - it does read as a quiet and "pretty" fic. So take that for what it is worth.

It felt too short to DNF, but if the fic was any longer I probably would have.

Legend says that selkies are drawn to souls who have yearning in their heart in the hopes to abate or make better. Stiles's seal brings him to Derek's door and he's quite confused having never "pleased" a man before. Having been alone for so long, Derek takes what comfort he can in the stranger's platonic friendship. He knows better to not get too attached as selkies are known to appear for a short time and never return.

This had great UST and with what I thought was some pretty good angsty yearning. Wistful and tender, intermixed with a bit of haunting melancholic destiny, this leaves you on a high note knowing that despite some big obstacles, these two will always find each other.
