The McCall Brothers Trilogy #1

Stranded With the Wolf

Rate this book
Who wouldn’t want to be…stranded with a wolf?

When the snow started to fall in Chicago, everyone in Sara Allen’s office building quickly hurried home. Everyone except Sara and her boss, Jarod McCall. Why? Because her boss was CEO of McCall Holdings and a dominant alpha who made his own rules. Even if it meant being stranded until the city shoveled its way out from under a record snowfall.

As the hours past, Sara became more than upset with Jarod. He’d stranded her in a building with little food, a heating system that powered down on the weekends…and with him! How could she keep her feelings to herself when he kept touching her…kissing her…loving her?

Jarod was a big man with big appetites and he wanted his curvy assistant to satisfy them. Sara might think he was an inconsiderate jackass, but he knew exactly what he was doing…stranding her with a very hungry wolf.

What I would have liked the heroine to say "you knew I was your mate and waited half a year?! And not only that but you dated two gorgeous women each week while knowing I was your mate? Get away from me asshole."

A blizzard strands a curvy personal assistant with her alpha-wolf boss, who isn't as indifferent to her as he seems.

I went back and forth about purchasing this book. The description piqued my interest, but some of the reviews put me off. More than one reader had a serious problem with the hero crossing the line from alpha into just plain mean. Believe it or not there is a difference, and it can make or break a story for me. I decided to take a chance and see for myself figuring that I could always return the book if I couldn't finish it.

Boy am I glad I took a risk.

Sara Allen is no doormat. She's unsure of herself and uneasy in the situation she's thrust into. This is natural. Especially since she's entertained romantic fantasies about her boss. She can't quite trust that the romantic vibe he's sending (a pretty clumsy one, by the way) isn't just wishful thinking on her part. Sara is quirky and funny. She's quick to laugh at herself, but not in a cruel way.

Jarod is a pill. No doubt. He's a little too pleased with himself in general. He does seem put out by the fact that his fated mate is something of a Plain Jane. There are points where I wished Sara would kick him in the shin and say, "Listen, buster, there are plenty of other hot wolves in this fictional universe. Go make yourself another pretend billion and leave me alone." But isn't that the point of romance fiction? Sexual tension?Conflict? As long as the rough edges resolve themselves satisfactorily, we're fine.

By the end of this book all of Sara and Jarod's edges are worn smooth.

That said, the sex is well done. There's great pacing. The erotic parts do not overshadow the rest of the book.

Issues? A couple. Point of view is omniscient. We get inside both Jarod and Sara's heads. This provides useful clues to character and motivation, but it can be disorienting at times. A third person POV, with the changes marked by chapter or even scene breaks, would have offered a smoother read. Also, there are multiple proofing blemishes. Not serious grammatical issues. These are small but obvious errors that should have been picked up during the final edit. In such a short book, they got irritating at times.

Overall, though, I enjoyed the story and the characters so much that I'm willing to overlook the editing. Jarod has a couple of brothers. At some point, I'd very much like to meet them on the page!

I was enjoying the book, till the moment they had sex and the H was all "you're my mate" and the h was like "ok". The h spent most of the book calling him a man whore which is why she didnt want to sleep with him, but the minute he decides to 'take' her, she cant wait to have sex with him. idiculous.

It was ok. Unfortunately just as I thought it was starting to get quite good the story stopped short.

My second Marie Mason book. I liked this one, but not as much as I did with the first book I've read of hers Blind Date With A Bear. I really enjoyed that one a lot and gave it 5 stars.

This one didn't get as good of a rating because the book was shorter. I also didn't really understand why Jarod waited 6 months before he finally made a move to claim his mate. Even though he wasn't able to be with a woman sexually since he scented Sara it seemed that he still tried to date other women because Sara mentions that no woman lasts more than a week with Jarod. I'm sure he takes the women to dinner and tries to do other date stuff with the intention of getting them into bed, but then he eventually can't because he knows he's got a mate. A point against Jarod.

I was also very disappointed that he didn't even seem to really acknowledge her as his mate or that he was attracted to her except for that first time. Yes, I know that Sara does say that she seems Jarod looking at her, but then he manages to shut that down. He never really felt protective of her to make sure she ever gets home because he says that all the buses have stopped working. So he knows she takes the bus? Really? He works her so late and he lets her take public transportation home? He finally says he'll drive her home because it was snowing so hard, but it finally takes a blizzard for him to do this? Another point against Jarod.

Jarod seemed to be a bit of a was a jerk and I'm not sure his mating feeling for Sara is all that strong since he was able to keep his hands off her for 6 months.

Of course I'll read the next books in the series. I think the brothers seem interesting and maybe one of them will do the McCall name as well as being a wolf finding a mate more justice than Jarod has.

(Spoiler in Review)

While this story is well written, the hero sucks. What in the world kind of alpha wolf shifter scents his mate only to proceed to ignore her for six months while he runs around playing the field?! I also had a hard time accepting the fact that Sara wasn't bothered enough by Jarod's behavior to look for some type of explanation from him about why he took so long to decide to claim her before just falling into his arms when he finally decides to take her. I can understand that Sara was overwhelmed by the powerful, passionate draw of her shifter mate, and I get that she is one of those BBW heroines racked with insecurity and lacking a sense of her own self worth (my least favorite type of leading lady). However even the most self deprecating of women should question how a wolf could so easily put aside the woman meant to be his while he whores around with other women and struts around in public with them on his arm. I wanted her to grow a backbone and make him put just as much effort into gaining her favor as he did into rejecting her. I can only hope that Logan and Hunter prove more worthy of their mates than Jarod does.

Jarod knew the first day Sara applied for a job at his company that she was his mate, but couldn´t act on it. Now months later, she´s his assistant, and has no clue about being his mate.
When they´re stranded together through a snowstorm - will things change? Can she believe that what she´s wanted all along really has some truth to it?
Quick read, PNR Romance and smutty fluff in a great combo.

Wow, hot story in a very cold world, because they are snowed in.
He knows she is his mate since the moment he saw her, but gives her time to get used to him before he takes action.
Now with them snowed in together at the company he can't help, but has to give into his needs as a wolf and claim her as his mate.
She doesn't mind, because she liked him already a lot.
When they finally really come together it is steaming hot and erotic

A great book, hot Alfa male finds his mate. Now to convince her she is. Believable characters, with great story line. Gotta love these gorgeous shifter alpha males. They put their women above all else, when they find their mate they are with them for life. There mission becomes to provide, protect, love, and be true to them always. Ahhh I love to read, and doesn't every woman want a man like that:) 18 years I would think with the amount of sex.

Stranded with the wolf was such a delicious read. What a great scenario, getting stranded in a high rise at work with your yummy but untouchable playboy boss. Regardless that he is a shifter. I had some choice words for him because he knew Sara was his mate, so he made sure to hire her and keep her near him, overloaded her with work and then paraded women through his office weekly, sometimes daily in front of her for over 6 months without giving her a hint that he belonged to her alone. What a jerk thing to do! Then, when he takes advantage of the situation, in his mind he’s finally giving in and claiming her and a life with her. But in her mind, she’s already been in love with him, knowing that’s taboo, but to give in to a known playboy, and knowing it will ruin her job, she can’t help herself and damn the torpedoes. She’s willing to give it all up for the brief time they are stranded together. She truly believed that she was giving up all her dreams; the good job, getting married, having children, not to mention her reputation: “Having sex with her boss would constitute the biggest risk she could take. She was willing to go against everything she had always believed in. Falling in love, getting married, having a family. There was none of that here—no courtship, no dating, no romance. Just hot, wild sex.” And with a notorious player at that. In my book, he did her wrong and should spend their lifetime making it up to her. In the throes of their passion, when they were joined indefinitely because of his knotting he said, “I love you, Sara. I love you more than life itself. I will take care of you, protect you. Cherish you until my dying day.” That was wonderful and all but I still think he had some explaining to do about all the women he paraded in front of her, all the time he ignored her, overworking her, knowing she was his mate. I would have liked to have read an epilogue where Jarod explained his behavior and made it all up to her, eased her life, and then down the line, they started their family.

There were still a couple of mistakes like using the word “know” instead of “now.” Marie really needs a better editor/proof-reader than she’s had. Marie, if you ever read this, I offer my services for free as a final proof-reader!

Marie really is a good writer. She has a few common elements she sticks with, but switches up the background and location enough. I don’t see any new books published in the past couple of years, and no activity on her FB page for a year. If I could get in touch with her, just to fawn all over her, I would. There are some hellacious writers in this genre, but she is above them and up there with some of the best. I hope she never stops.

What a pile of crap. Well the ending was any way.
The story itself wasn't too bad, could have been so much better. But I don't know how much more of the bad grammar, I could have put up with.
She went from using British English with the word arse, to the rest of the book being American English.
The constant words being missing or the wrong one in place was annoying and the continual stuff ups on the he/she/her and his aspect was really just getting on my wick.
The male character for me was completely crass with his pillow talk, some of the things he was saying in my point of view should not be said to a virgin. and then I think there is a stuff up during the thrusting in and out before he then hits her hymen. He is then asking her if she loves him, before he confesses his love for her and then tells her she had better love him.
After having a crush on the guy the female character is then confessing her love and agreeing to have his babies.
And another thing what the hell is knotted? The dude got stuck, her muscled constricted and he got stuck, simple as that.
There was a lot of head hoping and I'm pretty sure the order of the brothers got changed during the book. Now I could be wrong but I am sure that Jarod was not the oldest at the start and then became the oldest, when his brother Logan phoned before the story popped into his head.
Did this book even see and editor, proof-reader? hell a friend who would have picked up on all the stuff ups in this book.
After reading this in a box set, where the other two books follow it, I am now stuck reading those two, lets just hope they are better than this one, in the grammar department.

So Jarod scents Sara as his mate and hires her as his assistant, but keeps dating other women. Then one day they get snowed in at the office and get together, by the end of it they're on love. It's never really explained why he never said anything, and just absolutely absurd that they have to use the L word...sex does not have to equal love. Also being a virgin does not somehow make your brain not work. I swear this girl was so stupid..."oh I'm surprised I have a hymen I used tampons and went to gym class" "oh I can't have sex with my boss I want to fall in love and have a family"....what the heck is she even talking about?!?

So.... Jumping of POV, very shallow world building and absolute, complete jerk of male character without explanation on why he waited. I am mad at this book.

Spoilers ahead
Sara was a fucking doormat. She knew wolfs usually claim their mates inmediately, and she was ok... Ok him... Parading weekly dates with different women... Right.in.her.face? Do you not have self respect? Not only that, he hired her because...He couldn't let go? He wanted the cake and eat it too? Oh!! SURE BOSS I LOVE YOU, YOU WHO SHOWED NO INTEREST WHATSOEVER AND SUDDENLY WANTS TO FUCK!

This made me.soooooo. Mad.

Strand me with a wolf

Sara has a job as the assistant of a big company who just happens to be a wolf shifter. Jarod knows that Sara is his mate from the very first day he met her. He didn’t bother telling her but he made sure that she had a job as his assistant. One day a storm blows into Chicago and Sara along with Jarod are stranded at the office. Now whether Jarod did it on purpose we will never know but he finally claims his mate while waiting for the storm to blow over.

Really

Soooo.... He spent 6 months knowing she was his mate. Constantly "cheated" on her by dating models and celebrities, not telling her that she's his, etc. And bam no asking for forgiveness, no groveling, just bam. I know it's a quick little read but come on he should have paid for all the h*ll he put her through for 6 months!!!

Jarrod McCall was her boss and super sexy and would never be interested in his curvy secretary.
Then they are stranded together during a blizzard. Things get out of control. Nothing is as it seems.
Loved this romance.

awful writing

This storyline has so much potential. However, the author would switch pov in the middle of a dang paragraph. It was hard to follow and there were so many errors that it felt like it was unedited.

Stranded With the Wolf

I wanted a quick/short wolf shifter read, and it was. No cliffhanger. I liked the interaction between the two characters. If you want a quick read, this is it.

Such a good short read. You don't get a lot of characters but you do get a great story. Though out the book you are introduced to the three brothers. It will be interesting to read their stories. The main female is a sweet innocent young woman. She is overwhelmed by her boss but loves her job. He on the other hand knows she is is mate but is not accepting it yet. The storm changes all of that. The way he tells her is a little off but it worked. He is not much of an explainer he just does. The book has no drama. That could have added something more but being a short read was unnecessary. I hope there is more to their story in other books since the story just stops. We will see.

2 1/2 stars

I really hated rating this so low, because the story itself was good. Between the huge editing errors, the lack of depth with the characters and plot, and the abrupt way it ended, it had too many issues to receive a higher rating. This story started out really good, I liked the way the wolves didn't have to hide who/what they were from everyone, and the characters were interesting. It had a good plot, and with some work, it could've easily been a 5 star book.

I would've liked to seen more involvement with the wolves and their pack. It was discussed numerous times, but other than a phone call from his brother, no others were included. It does state that the H continued to date other women for 6 months after figuring out that the h was his mate, that he never had sex with anyone else during that time, but it never really gives a solid reason as to why he chose to do this. Another thing that was brought up frequently, at least after they had sex, was that he had knotted her, which only happens between mates. I have read quite a few shifter books, but had never heard this term before. That would be ok, except that it wasn't explained what it was or the importance of this till almost the end of the book, and even then it was very vague.

I tried to overlook the editing errors throughout the first part of the book, but they got so bad that it did start taking away from the story. There were different POV's used throughout the book, which would be fine, except that you couldn't tell when it changed from one to the next. They changed from paragraph to paragraph, without any indicators that it had changed, or who the new POV was.

I think that this book and author have potential, however the books need a good editor, and if the author could use more details, give more depth to the characters and the story, and create a solid ending that doesn't leave the relationship up in the air, I believe that there would be more higher ratings for the future books. I'm not going to recommend or not recommend this book. I believe that there are some books that it depends on the individual as to weather or not they'll like it, and this is one of those books. If you're interested, request a sample of the book to determine if it is something that you will enjoy.

what I fell like (and I know it is FEEL but in the book he FELL her). If I could I would give this one point on one star. I thought wow! bbw/shifter cool (so I got all rescued, saved and stranded). what I got was a series of errors, a lot of eye rolls (on my part), and after reading some of these other reviews I am left wondering 'what book did you read?' because I sure didn't read the same one. it's a short story rampant with errors that any decent editor should have caught.
this takes place during a blizzard in Chicago- yeah, I get to read about what it's like during a storm-but no it all takes place in an office.
the story COULD have been excellent if the writer would have chosen to expand the non existent plot to include more back story of shifters besides (they scent their mate, they only knot their mate, they must care for their mate) I read it because I was bored spitless... first time in a while I've read MF book well three because i got the series. huge mistake on my part.

WHERE HAVE ALL THE CONDOMS GONE????

brothers are mentioned and they have their own books

what could have been excellent was just meh! again very short story with limited backstory, bad edits, confusing at times seems it took place the same day as the other two books in the series.

There must be some reason why I bought these three books...shifters....yes?

The story started off with promise, then proceeded to slip rapidly downhill....no sled required....

Jacob was an arse, arrogant and just plain offensive - how an Alpha can ignore his mate for 6 months and still bang other women, but it takes a snow storm to lock them in the office together and he gets his "mating" (including knots) on...errrr....WTF??? He also needs lessons in dirty talk *cringe* Sara needed a backbone and able to administer a sharp right hook with a knee to the jubilees - alpha mate or not! There was little around the pack dynamics, lore or location of the pack. Also not sure about the "inner voice of the wolf" being a sarcastic smart-arse!! Jacob has two brothers and they were briefly introduced into the story via a telephone call and the next two books are about them....

There was a plethora of spelling mistakes - spell for smell/fell for feel....it got annoying.

It finished on a HFN with a HUGE amount of blurb for other books at the end of the story. Not really a happy bunny :(

A wonderful read about a human woman with low self-esteem, in love with her billionaire wolf-shifter boss, and completely unaware of the fact that she is his fated mate. Even though Sara knows pretty much all there is to know about shifters, she hasn’t yet figured out that Jarod is made for her, but that’s not too surprising seeing that he hasn’t made any moves on her since he hired her over six months ago, and the fact that he’s paraded numerous beautiful women in front of her, all because he’s in denial. He doesn’t think he’s ready to settle down with his mate. Until Fate decides to step in and give them the push they need, by snowing them in, alone, together, for a whole weekend. Oh, to have been a fly on the wall….but wait….we are, lol.
Ms. Mason has done a wonderful job with this story. Easy to follow with a beautiful plot that will have you wishing you were truly there, and not as a fly, but the main characters, of course. Loved this!
I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

So, I read this awhile ago and recently read it again and I went over my review and I was like I actually liked this? LOL. Wow. Ok, well I didnt like how he treated her. He wasn't HORRIBLE to her. Just ignores her for 6 months and dates and possibly sleeps with other women who are prettier. How can he possibly do that if she was his mate? I mean mates just dont do that. Everything I know and read about shifters that just doesnt happen. Its not written that way. What made him do that to her? I mean she didnt know it at the time so I hold no blame for her. He's really insensitive and doesnt know how to apologize and explain things well at all! Her character was insecure and sorta weak. I do have to say he WAS considerate in taking her virginity. So, I know he's not an ahole or cad. For some reason the author decided to write Jerod this way and it kinda irks me because I do like him and he had a lot of potential.
