This continues to be a total joy to read. Superboy Prime is really trying to start anew and turn over a new page. He starts to get encouragment from some good places. The new potential villain seems like fun too.

Williamson was already writing a very good superman run before Prime came into the picture but holy shit has this been AMAZING. I've always liked Superboy Prime, and even his shift towards being better, I thought his break of reality and his loss of himself made sense. But the magic here, the call backs, and the "proving yourself to be a better person" captures Superman's spirit so well. This is a HOMERUN!

SuperBoy prime? More like SuperBoy PEAK!! I love this so much, the fourth wall breaking commentary to the fans is amazing and I am so glad I’ve yet to read infinite crisis so I can fully enjoy SuperBoy prime, lol. It’s already been about a month of SuperBoy prime filling in for the big man, and in between saving the world and sightseeing (such as trying and failing to sneak into Themyscira), SuperBoy prime spends his time back in Smallville to get a nice home cooked meal from the Kents. I love the amazing man shirt he is wearing, but he just can’t help himself but tell them how glad he is they are still alive…seeing the worried expression on their faces he further explains that some fans prefer then to be dead (Mark Waid is surprisingly included among these fans, even including an editors note to confirm it LMAO). Of course the Kents are a little worried about him being here with his history, but prime tells them not to worry as he can hear them above watching. They aren’t sure what he is talking about, but prime proceeds to explain that Terrific sent a Justice league team over here to watch him as they don’t trust him in the slightest and if he even coughs wrong they will come crashing through the walls to fight him. Part of him is tempted to take them in and show them what “prime time” really means, lol, but he also knows that’s what they want and they expect him to screw up when he ultimately wants to show them that he can do the right thing.
The Kents can see how genuine he is about this, so they ask CK to take a seat and tell them more about his time here and what’s bothering him. He takes them back to earlier in the week working at the comic shop where he mentioned a conversation with a cute girl at the comic shop. Turns out CK is literally me as he is completely oblivious to any of the flirting she is trying to do, but as she walks away he is pulled over by his boss, rocking an awesome static shirt. His boss loves the hard work CK has been putting in, but he can get a bit passionate at times…cut to an amazing flashback where CK is yelling at a customer while wearing a Fatson Todd (CANON!) lanyard and wearing a shirt that demands red hood’s helmet is back, lmao…like his boss said, he can get “passionate.” Additionally they have a problem with him constantly coming in late and taking long breaks…CK doesn’t have very good excuses for his superhero activity. But as we get different perspectives around the shop, I can’t help but notice a full blown statue of Optimus prime in the corner, HELL YEAH! Anyway, the boss mentions that CK is up for employee of the month but he can’t be late and he needs to do better.
Employee of the month actually means a ton to prime, he can finally show everyone that he can actually manage a super work/life balance. But as night rolls around he continues his famous location sightseeing by going to the one and only crime alley…it’s a lot more morbid and gross than he would have figured. And suddenly from the corner a voice demands to known what he is doing here as Damian slams his sword against prime…breaking it in the process, as of course that wouldn’t work. Damian demands prime leave the city right is, but as Damian grapples away Prime only flies after him to ask him a question. Damian was created after prime returned so he never really got a chance to meet him, lol, but he knows Damian had a reputation for being annoying and a little deadly assassin killer…so how did he then it all around and her people to like him? Damian claims he assumes everyone hates him and then stops caring, Prime doesn’t believe him for a moment. But suddenly prime finds himself following Amin into the sewers. Damian explains that a rouge stole a deadly chemical from STAR and Damian has tracked him here and doesn’t need Prime’s help. But as clayface rushes out of the water to surround them, it seems like prime’s help wouldn’t be that bad after all. Damian agrees so prime can keep clayface that while he finds and disarms the bomb meant to disperse the chemical. Prime’s first instinct is to burn clayface up, but Damian orders him not to as they may need him to help deactivate the bomb. This gives time for some witty conversation from Prime as he tells clayface that even though he is a pre-crisis fan he primarily enjoys this version of him, lol.
During the fight prime is able to use his x-ray vision to direct Damian to the bomb. But suddenly clayface disappears red as the image of the real Superman came before prime…clearly this was a very rude trick by Clayface that prime saw through immediate, lol, freezing and smashing Clayface in the process. The bomb is only seconds away from blowing up, so prime makes an executive decision to fly in, take the bomb high into the air where he used his lasers to completely destroy it and the chemicals inside. But as prime began to fly back down, suddenly his world shifted and returned to a comic draft format as he was once again met with gruesome images of killing the justice league as a voice whispered to him. That this is who he truly is and he can’t escape his destiny. But the time prime woke up it was morning, Damian stayed by his blacked out body after clayface was secured to make sure prime was alright, even risking GCPD capture in the process. But then prime realizes that it’s already day and he needs to get back pronto. But as he is leaving Damian admits that he was lying earlier, he does care about what people think of him as he doesn’t want them judging him by his worst moments…”but change wasn’t easy. It took time. You just need to keep trying.” Prime says thank you as he flies off to get to work, that was exactly the person he needed to talk to.
Prime is of course late and doesn’t get the employee of the month credit, and he is still left trying to figure out what those visions are. As a reminder, all of this has been a story CK has been telling the Kents at their breakfast table as he tells them how important getting employee if the month could have been. Martha stands up and excuses herself as she walks out to call power girl down from the heroes watching overheard, she tells her that if they expect him to learn and become better then they can’t always be watching him like this and sometimes the true sign of a good person is how they act when no one is watching. Power girl understands and she calls the Justice league back to the watchtower. As Martha returns she sits back down with CK and asks him to talk about the girl at the comic shop. He mentions he hopes to see her again but he may be speaking a bit too soon as the issue comes to an end we find her slipping away into a particularly haunted looming house in metropolis. As she descends into the basement she reports back about how perfectly manipulative the boy at the comic shop will be for their sacrifice as it turns out this is none other than witchfire!! Ahahaha, of course she came to the comic shop looking for easily manipulative people.

I have really enjoyed this book ever since issue #1, but I do not care for Superman Prime. Especially in this iteration.
He's just using a version of the Deadpool personality. He's making "meta" commentary upon real-world events, or expressing his awareness of the fact he's in a comic book. He's displaying inappropriate casual behavior in an otherwise serious setting. This is... done to death. To really check off all the other items on the list, he needs to display childish and/or effeminate behavior, tying in more pop culture references outside of comic books. Then we will have completed the boilerplate Deadpool personality that writers bust out for any character they want to make "popular."
And, no. I never liked Damian. I wasn't aware of when the public sentiment changed and people started to like him. The tide was just starting to turn before Flashpoint and the New 52 garbage, and that's when I stopped reading DC comics for several years. When he was introduced as a wannabe Robin, and he was planning to murder all the prior Robins, I had him pegged as the brat that he is. Then, when I wasn't paying attention... Blegh. He has fans now.

I’m actually way behind on this series (actually I don’t even think I’m following this one?? Been long enough I don’t remember) but my best friend needed the April Drools variant so I picked it up and this issue made more sense than I expected for having picked it up out of the blue. Conveniently this issue guest stars my boy Damian Wayne, and nobody writes him better than Joshua Williamson. Maybe that’s why it just makes sense for Prime to ask him about redemption. Williamson has made Prime just so damn likable. Unfortunately for him I can hold a grudge even better than Damian (whose kindness toward Prime is really a testament to his own growth). The editor’s note telling you to maybe not check out Infinite Crisis honestly got a laugh out of me. I’ll need Conner and Bart to forgive Prime before I would, but it’s nice to see the chance Jonathan and Martha are offering him. That makes sense for the kind of people they are.

Superboy Prime's first foray into work/superhero-life balance is a great success. Well, not narratively, but thematically.
As someone who's still very new to Prime, this issue added substantial depth to his character that made him appear almost Peter Parker-esque. Without outright spoiling anything, the Spider-Man parallels are intentional here in more ways than one, but they aren't just for laughs. Prime is learning to live responsibly, and though it's a bumpy ride, he's getting there.
If the writing and art continue to be as sharp as they have been, and with Dan Mora the latter is a certainty, I'll be collecting this series for quite some time.

No Mark, you are wrong. The Kents, BOTH of them, need to be alive to ground Superman's story.
Anyway. Have you ever done something bad and when you tried to turn a new leaf every person is always wary of you? Regardless of how much you have shown you’ve changed and are actually trying to be better?
Now. I understand that someone like Prime shouldn’t really get a redemption arc. But having him actually try is remarkable, even when his mind is playing games on him, showing him terrible things he could do, but he isn’t doing.

Prime consigue nueva amistad entre compañero del gremio con pasado turbio y violento y una potencial "Novia gótica culona" (y también posible futura némesis). Todo esto reventando las posibilidades de la metanarrativa llegando a lanzar una buena pulla a Mark Waid y su interés en tener a los Pa´s Kents bajo tierra cuando aquí vemos lo revelante que siguen siendo con su presencia y enseñanzas empáticas.

Probablement le meilleur travail de Williamson chez DC. Chacune de ses idées pour Superboy Prime est un délice, y'a pas une page où on ne sourit pas, qu'on soit amusé ou touché. De belles dynamiques se créent ici avec Damian et les Kent, c'est parfait.

This was fun seeing Superboy Prime and Damien team up. Superboy runs into that Witch Fire chick who tries to attack him in the next issue. Prime opens up to Jonathan and Martha about how hard it is to overcome a dark past. Sucks he didn’t end up getting employee of the month !

I love me some Bats which means that I love the Robin appearance here! Joshua Williamson has managed to write a loveable Damian who does not piss me off, and there's actually nothing more to want than that.
But on a side note, this issue did make me feel really sad, especially when Prime didn't get employee of the month and he admitted that it felt like everyone was expecting him to fail. He's trying his best and he's doing a great job! I just want to give him a hug.
Dan Mora's art is stunning, as always. The layouts are so dynamic, the panels are action-packed, and the way they strip back the layers of art to show how Prime loses his grip on reality is incredibly unique.
