Country Roads Revisited - Walks on Foyleside and Inishowen

Rate this book
This is a 'Walks' book with a difference. Instead of mountain tracks and rocky trails, most of the walks are quiet country road circuits of 5 to 8 kilometres (3 to 5 miles) in length, with enough variation in height and terrain to make them both interesting and moderately challenging but with few really steep gradients - suitable for young and not so young alike.

In this new edition there are fifty-five walks in all, the locations being almost equally divided on either side of the Foyle. They invite you to explore both the immediate rural hinterland of Derry itself and places lying progressively further afield in north Inishowen and eastern parts of the Lough Foyle basin. All afford outstanding views of the surrounding countryside. Each walk is fully described and accompanied by a detailed route map and at least one pen and ink drawing of a particular scene or feature of interest associated with the walk.

Walking these routes will not only give you plenty of fresh air and healthy exercise, but will also allow you time to fully appreciate the beauty of the local scenery and to learn more about the landscape and its history.
The author has lived and worked in the North West since 1952. He has an intimate knowledge of the region, arising from personal interest and from his work as a teacher of geography - first at Foyle College and then at Limavady Grammar School, where he was vice-principal when he retired in 1988. He is at present leader of the Walks group in Foyle University of the Third Age (U3A Foyle).
