How We Killed the Witch (1): A Comedy Adventure for Men

Rate this book
In one year, Silas Wheatfarmer will be killed by The Witch.

There are many things that might drive one to become an Anointed. The desire for fame, the pursuit of wealth, a yearning for adventure. For some, they become Anointed simply because it’d be a waste not to use the natural strength they were born with. For others, they simply wish to pursue knowledge, utilizing the Association’s many connections to uncover secrets that even they haven’t uncovered.

For Silas, being an Anointed symbolized only one freedom. As an Anointed, one was free to do take on a dangerous quest one day, fight in a tournament the next, and risk one’s life scouring a deadly dungeon for treasure the day after.

It was the ideal life for someone like Silas, so when the results of his Magical Aptitude Test came back that he would never be strong enough to become an Anointed, he disregarded it. Silas would die before he gave up on his dream. He was going to become an Anointed no matter what…

…even if he had to sell his soul to The Witch to do it.

Surprisingly good

I didn’t know what to think when the title said comedy adventure but it wasn’t this! Silas is funny and clueless without being too stupid and gets more competent as the story progresses.

For an author's first foray into haremlit, this book was pretty blah. The MC doesn't really feel like he's driven, despite having a goal and a time limit on it.

The MC is a farmer with delusions of becoming a great adventurer, or an "Anointed". But he has no magic. His first foray finds him at the edge of death, paralyzed by the creature he was sent to kill. Suddenly a woman appears, kills said creature with a scythe made from the MC's blood, then bites him to transfer some power to him. The caveat is that he gets one year to develop that power and then she's going to kill him unless he can kill her. So now he has a time limit to motivate him. The powers he gains are the ability to deliver strong kinetic blows after building up a charge, and to zip around quickly while avoiding or deflecting attacks. Nothing OP about that, since he still gets hurt. These powers are very poorly explained in the book, making them feel underwhelming.

There is only one love interest in the book, a woman that was part of another party but spends most of her time playing fetch. She ends up on the same mission as him to kill some goblins, and they start to hang out after he joins her party. The romance is pretty non-existent, since there is a lot of time skips and a lot of telling, not showing. While there were two intimate scenes, they weren't great.

I probably should have put the book down, but I like to give first time authors or those new to the genre more runway. I was left feeling blah when the book suddenly ended. I won't read a sequel.
