The Esholian Institute #3

By the Lockpick and the Lyre

They refuse to be pawns in an ancient game… so they’ll just have to play against each other.

Rayna Drey has survived another year at the Esholian Institute, but the island is in far more danger than ever before. Not only is the Good Council rebuilding its army of monsters, but Coen himself has become the most dangerous weapon of all by accepting his oath to the queen from across the sea. Now, he is destined to destroy them all.

A destiny Rayna vows to change.

But amid increasingly deadly classes and tests, a new move from Dyonisia Reeve turns Rayna into an uncontrollable weapon herself. Now on opposing sides of a looming war, Rayna and Coen must form their own secret plan with their friends and the mysterious white tiger Jagaros. Because the only way to win a centuries-old game is to create a new one.

But if they lose, the entire island of Eshol will perish at their hands—and they'll perish at each other's.

*beta read* no one is prepared for this!

🦋Welcome back to the Esholian Institute🦋

✨ Arc Review ✨

By the Lockpick and the Lyre is the long anticipated third book of this series and when I tell you it's a banger, I am absolutely serious. I think this one might be my favorite of the series. The stakes are higher, the losses are unimaginable and you'll be clutching your chest by the end of it.

Coen & Rayna are once again stuck on opposite sides of this rebellion and boy, the yearning goes crazy. I am so obsessed. They are both down bad. I love that for them. Their banter is amazing and the boat scene 🫠🫠🫠.

Shout out to Willa and Felicity for being the cutest, most fun little furry sidekick. I loved the time Rayna spends with them and how they bicker like siblings. I am thoroughly impressed by how developed all the side characters are but I'm wary of loving them too much in case it gives Mariah any ideas on who to kill off 😭.

Mariah had me all in my feels through a good chunk of this book and I cannot wait to see what mayhem is in store for us next.

By the Lockpick and the Lyre is up for preorder now and will be available on October 5th. Just 3 more sleeps 👏👏

"We'd probably end up somewhere among the stars and never find our way back."
"And what a tragedy that would be."

*beta/arc read*

Once again we are thrown back into the throws of the Esholian Institute. The stakes are high and not everyone is going to make it out alive... but what are they willing to risk in order to save their world?

Object Summoning, it seemed, was more powerful than any of us had ever imagined.

By the Lockpick and the Lyre is the third installment of the Esholian Institute series, so buckle your seatbelts.
We start back right where we left off, our favorite couple is separated and the governing power is becoming more lethal by the second. Mariah has once again succeeded in writing such a brilliantly complex and vibrant world that always keeps you guessing. Throughout this book I was gasping, laughing, shaking my head in disbelief and even shedding a few tears.

"Hello, little hurricane. Slight change of plans. I am the monster you will be fighting today."

Rayna and Coen are the ultimate couple. No matter what odds are thrown at them, these two will stop at no end to jump through loophole after loophole to be together. That's either incredibly romantic, or incredibly stupid... I like to think it's the former. Throughout this book Rayna really comes into her own, even more so than she previously has and I am always blown away by how strong of a character she continues to be despite all the forces that fight against her. She has a willpower and a determination that I could only hope to achieve.
Coen oh Coen, this man is the epitome of yearning. Stuck between what is right and what he is being forced to do is no easy feat, he will no nothing but fight for the people that he loves. And that boat scene.. you are not ready,

"To be fair, the thought of total destruction isn't quite as frightening when you have friends to face it with."

I completely adore all of the side characters in this story. Rayna surrounds herself with the best of people, they may be unassuming to those around them, but they are strong and fiercely loyal to each other. I for one am not shy about my love for Rodhi... although the spiders do give me the heebie geebies a little. During this book we also meet some new friends along the way, all of whom are deeply complex and brilliantly written characters, I am in awe of Mariah's abilities, she truly does an incredible job with the expansion of her world and characters.
I adored the little friendship Willa and Felicity had. The banter and squabble between a monkey and a mouse is something I never knew I needed.

Don't do yourself a disservice by missing out on this book. If you have read the first 2 books and haven't started this one yet... what are you doing, start immediately! And if you haven't read any of them... I'm so excited to welcome you to the Esholian Institute.

I couldn't get to my computer to type this review up! Wow! It's been years since I've read a large series. I am partial to duologues, but this series has changed that! This is the best 3rd book I've read in a series. It's just perfection. Contained multitudes of reactions from me!

I was fully immersed in this story very quickly. The first half was a slower pace, but I never felt bored. Instead, pieces were moving into place like a chess game. As everything starts to unfold around the second half (the half I was heading into last night before bed. Big mistake because it's 6am now). I realized very quickly that pieces from even BTOATO (book 1) clicked into place. All my questions were answered AND I'm said I'm reading this as an ARC so I have a long wait ahead of me for book 5! 😭

I was held in suspense , then crying sad tears and happy tears as everything unfolded. Just mind blown by how all pieces fit together in this book!

Rayne & Coel are my favorite fantasy couples! The way their lives have some together, broken apart and come back together. There is a balance of sexy banter, sweet dialogue, and passion. The yearning!!! They both yearn so badly for each other. Seeing how their relationship has been established over the last 3 books.

Let this be your sign to start this series because book 4 is going to be crazy!!!

How does one apply to be loved by a man like Coen? Because I would like to submit my formal application immediately. Cover letter, references, whatever you need. That man is the definition of devotion and I am absolutely feral about it. 🥵

This was such a fun continuation of the series! It leans heavily into character progression, with the worldbuilding and plot taking more of a supporting role, but when those little plot sprinkles showed up?? OH MY GOD. They were GOOD. The reveals had me sitting there like 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻. I’m definitely ready to see this series wrap up, but I’m genuinely enjoying the time I get to spend in this world and with these characters. If Coen is involved, I’ll happily keep submitting my application.

Absolutely amazing! The wait between books 2 and 3 was well worth it. This book answered so many questions from the first two but also left me with more for the rest of the series. I love how Mariah subtly gives a recap of book 2 and doesn’t throw it in your face. Just a simple way that makes you go, “oh yeah I remember that”. Not once did I feel lost and I read book 2 when it came out so it’s definitely been awhile.

ARC Review | So grateful for the opportunity to receive an ARC copy of this book!

By the Lockpick and the Lyre was an incredible continuation of a series that I have become completely invested in. The magic, the friendships, the character growth, the twists, and the emotional connections all came together to make this another 5-star read for me.

If you’ve been following The Esholian Institute series, By the Lockpick and the Lyre is exactly the kind of continuation I was hoping for and somehow, Mariah Montoya still managed to surprise me! Book 3 answered so many of the questions that I had from reading the other two books. I absolutely LOVED getting back into The Island of Eshol world and spending more time with Jagaros (my favorite), Rayna, Coen, and the rest of these awesome characters. After reading the previous two books, I’m just as invested in this story, its magic, and the relationships at the heart of it as I was when I started the series.

From the very beginning, I was hooked. There were moments where I thought I had figured out where certain things were going, only for the story to completely pull the rug out from under me. There were a few times when I thought I knew the answer before the characters did, but for the most part, the twists and revelations kept me guessing and left me genuinely shocked.

One of my favorite things about this series continues to be the magic system and the different types of magic within the Institute. I especially love the Wild Whisperers and their connection to nature. Anytime we get to see the protagonist communicate with animals or plants, those moments feel so magical and immersive. The world continues to feel bigger and more developed with every book, and I love discovering more about what these characters and their powers are capable of!

I also really loved seeing how much the characters have grown and evolved. Their powers have developed, but so have their personalities, friendships, and relationships. After three books, there is so much history between these characters, and I love that their relationships don’t feel stagnant. We get to see them change both individually and together, and that made me even more emotionally invested in their journey.

The only negative thing that I have to say is that I occasionally found myself questioning how some problems were resolved. I don’t want to spoil anything, so I will just say that there were a few situations where it felt like the characters escaped a difficult situation through a lucky discovery, a loophole, or a conveniently revealed piece of history. I found myself waiting for some of those situations to finally force the characters into a truly impossible position, especially when the stakes felt so high. But honestly, that was my only issue with the story. Because despite that, I was completely invested!

I love how Mariah Montoya writes these characters in such a way that makes me care about what happens to them! Their victories feel exciting, their struggles feel personal, and their relationships make the emotional moments hit that much harder. I found myself wanting to keep reading because I genuinely wasn’t ready to leave this world or the characters behind!

If you’ve read the first two books, you absolutely need to continue this series, and if you haven’t started The Esholian Institute series yet, what are you waiting for?!

Thank you to Mariah Montoya for the opportunity to receive an ARC.

This is an ARC review; huge thanks to Mariah for the opportunity to read By the Lockpick and the Lyre!

5/5⭐
3/5🌶️
There isn't much spice in the story, but the little that is there definitely hits the mark!

Overall, the book is fantastic! It is well-written with great prose. There is a cohesive narrative thread running through the entire book, despite the multiple POVs. It picks up right after book two, which is nice since no significant amount of time has passed between them.

The beginning is inviting; it captures the reader's attention and makes you want to keep reading. The story itself and the world the characters inhabit are wonderful, just like in books one and two.

I appreciate that other characters get their moment in the spotlight, not just the protagonists. Even without their own POVs, they contribute significantly to the story.
The author describes their world beautifully; it’s easy to visualize what it looks like.
The characters—whom we’ve followed for a while now—are well-crafted and vividly described. They evolve, and the author truly demonstrates her talent in portraying their growth and backstories.

Towards the middle and end, the book becomes a real nail-biter! There are so many twists and turns that keep you hooked!
I loved how information was revealed piece by piece—how questions from earlier books were answered, while new questions and curiosities arose for future installments. I can hardly wait for book four!

The book ends in a way that leaves you on the edge of your seat, eager for more! Another 5/5 book—Mariah!

An Absolutely Epic Third Installment!

A huge thank you to Mariah Montoya for sending me this ARC. As always, I am so honoured.

Having completely fallen in love with By the Orchid And The Owl and By The Moonbeam And The Mist, my expectations for Book 3 in the Esholian Institute series were sky high and it absolutely delivered another 5 star read!

We jump right back into the action with Rayna and Coen, whos epic love story has you hooked from the off.

The stakes are higher than ever as they battle to save the island from the two warring sisters, Dyonisia and Mydusia and their corrupt councils, to put the rightful King back on the throne.

This series is packed with incredible faerie magic including shape shifting, mind manipulation, object summoning, element weilding and wild whispering.
There are cute, intelligent and loyal animals too, Willa and Felicity will steel your heart.
There's also found family and beautifully written strong friendships.

If you haven't started this fantasy series yet, this is your sign to pick up book one immediately. I am already dying to get my hands on the next installment!

Arc Access;

Loved getting to go back to Rayna and Coen! Really enjoy their story and can’t wait to get back to it in Book 4.

Getting to see how the character’s powers have evolved and grown as well as the friendship group and their relationships was great.

My ONLY gripe with the story is how they manage to solve most problems through sheer luck or loopholes. Like every time Coen got orders to kill her, we’d find out more history to Rayna and her name would change. I was waiting for a fight where her friends would have to keep Coen away from her when the pull of his orders got too strong but it never happened.

Thank you so much to the author for the EARC copy! 🤍

I was really excited for this one after absolutely devouring the first two books in the series. But it had been a bit since I read the previous books, and it definitely took me a little bit to get back into the world and remember all the details and characters.

There were definitely parts where I was completely sucked in, but there were also parts that felt like they dragged a little. The book did feel a little bit long at times, and I found myself wishing the pacing would pick up.

BUT I absolutely LOVE the magic in this world, especially Rayna's Wild Whispering and the fact that she can communicate with animals. Some of the animal dialogue genuinely had me laughing out loud 😂 It adds such a fun and unique element to the story and is definitely one of my favorite parts of the magic system. I love the way the author describes magic and the different uses for it in this world.

There were definitely a couple of moments where I was getting some Harry Potter vibes. There was one classroom scene where they had to go up one at a time, face something scary, and try to calm it down, and I immediately thought of the boggart scene in Defense Against the Dark Arts. I feel like this can be typical in a school setting, but I still really enjoyed the scene!

I also love Coen and Rayna together, but some of their relationship dialogue started to feel a little forced for me. I understand they're in love and going to be mates, but I don't need to be reminded every five seconds. There were quite a few moments of "I love her/him so much" and overly cheesy lines that had me rolling my eyes a little. I think I would have preferred to feel their love through their actions rather than having it constantly spelled out.

Overall, I still really enjoyed returning to this world and these characters. There is so much about this series that I love, especially the magic, and I'm definitely invested in seeing where the story goes next. I just think the long break between books made it harder for me to jump back in, and a reread of the first two books probably would have made this experience even better for me!

Thank you to the author for the ARC! I appreciate the opportunity so much!

This book was an amazing continuation of this story. It had been a while since I read the first two books so I was a little worried it wouldn’t feel the same to me, but I was so wrong! I was immediately sucked backed into the world of Eshol. It took me a while to read it because I was honestly sad knowing when I finished it that it would be over and I would once again be on the wait for a new book.

Spoilers from this point on!! 🚨

There was some great additional world building throughout the book as well as some very surprising revelations! Jagaros being Rayna’s father?! Part of me hoped for that in some way but was too enthralled with the story to have seen it coming.

The battle against Dyonisia was so good! I’m very much questioning her meaning when she told Rayna to kill “her” for “them” right before she died. I obviously think she means Mydusia, but it leaves me wondering what is going to be revealed in the next book.

Jagaros being married to Chrysanthia and now on the hunt for her? Very much gave me ToG “where is my wife” vibes. On the subject of love, I am so happy that Coen and Rayna got to become vigates. I really thought Fate had denied them for a hot minute. Coen is a legendary book boyfriend.

We lost some good characters in this story, and I appreciate that the author isn’t afraid to kill people off even when it leaves me with emotional damage 😅 I would have loved to gotten to know Kanuk better. I am however SO GLAD that Nuisance still lives!!!

I fully believe we are on the way to a story of Rayna being branded with all 5 magics, plus developing her full faerie power. I absolutely can’t wait to continue this series!

I absolutely love The Esholian Institute series, and I can honestly say these books live rent-free in my head, I find myself thinking about them on a weekly basis. So, when I was chosen as an ARC reader for Book 3, I was ecstatic 🎉 …and Mariah has absolutely done it again!

Somehow, the magic system continues to become more intricate, immersive, and downright addictive with every book. Our favorite friends are back, and this time they’re on a mission that will take you on one wild and unforgettable ride. The banter is as witty as ever, the spice is delicious, and the twists and turns kept me glued to the page.

One of my favorite things about this book is how Mariah manages to give us answers to questions we’ve been dying to have answered, while simultaneously leaving us with even MORE questions. How?! I have no idea, but I am here for it.

And prepare yourselves for ALL. THE. FEELS. You’ll laugh, you’ll tear up, you’ll get angry, and you’ll experience these moments of joy that make you fall even harder for Rayna, Coen, and the whole crew. And I have to give Mariah credit for one thing in particular: she is absolutely not afraid to unalive a main character. So buckle up, friends. No one is safe. 😂

By the Lockpick and the Lyre is everything I wanted and more, and now I’m left with only one problem… I NEED BOOK 4. Immediately.

If you haven’t started the series yet, stop reading this and start now!

ARC REVIEW ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/🌶️🌶️🌶️
10/05/2026

I was so pumped to get this arc! I absolutely love this series and all of the characters so i definitely missed being in this world. This picked up right where book 2 left off and didn’t waste any time getting to the nitty gritty.

Now, our dear sweet Coen is in his villain era a little bit, and I loved every bit of it. He does not hold back especially when it comes to Rayna. Annnnnddddd we get to witness more of his spicy side which had me giggling and kicking my feet! This book did stress me out in the best way and kept me on my toes all the way through the epilogue. This book dives into some darker elements and things are definitely more tense than the first 2 books. I really didn’t relax until the very last page and now I’m looking forward to what’s next!

I recommend this series to literally everyone! This is such a fun world to dive into and the political elements really are eye opening. All of the best tropes are wrapped into this series and I absolutely love this authors writing style. It’s fun and witty but also dark and mysterious during those high stakes moments. It’s a perfect balance and she creates some wonderful characters. They each have such different personalities and they just fit in this group. If you love getting attached to fictional people (and animals) please pick up The Esholian Institute.

Umm holy freaking hell this is definitely my favorite book in the series thus far because we are turning up the heat. It’s been a hot second since I read book two so it took me a little to remember what had happened but once I got a few chapters in it came crashing back. Plus Mariah drops little recap hints here and there which made it easy to recall.

I’ve always been absolutely fascinated by the magic system and worldbuilding and I loved getting to expand on both but also learning more about the magic of the fae and how it differs from the students. The worldbuilding definitely expands and I loved getting to learn more about the lore and different nations. I think Rayna’s initial magic being Wild Whisperer is why I love this series so much. It’s definitely unique in romantasy.

I love the dual POV because they are kind of doing their own thing through most of the book with a similar goal and I liked seeing how differently they approach things. I freaking lovedddd their little mind to mind communication and how they are still able to do things within the confines of their minds. Really useful when Coen is trying to stay away. And they have needs. While they are fully together at this point, it is forbidden and I love a good forbidden romance. Rayna and Coen are both super touch him/her and die for each other and the banter and yearning is everything!! They are easily one of my favorite couples because they choose each other over and over but don’t let their love stop them from trying to save their people. They work very well together and have a lot of trust.

One of my favorite things is the chosen family aspect. Her friends would do literally anything for Rayna and now Coen. And that’s demonstrated multiple times throughout this book. Willa and Felicity absolutely stole the show. I loved their banter with each other and how much they love and adore Rayna. Also Felicity coming in clutch with the cute outfits!!

My jaw was absolutely on the floor multiple times and I was on the edge of my seat trying to see what would happen next. And I was legit terrified for Rayna multiple times. The ending was wild and I’m super super curious what will happen in the next one with how everything went down.

This next installment was well worth the wait! Mariah did a great job of weaving previous events into this story, so if you haven’t read By The Moonbeam and The Mist recently, I think you’d still have an easy time picking up right where it left off! By The Lockpick and The Lyre laid the foundation for expanding on the world-building, gave readers more context into the history of the Reeve family and the motivations of its key members, and set the stage for one hell of a rebellion. Accordingly, the pacing was a bit slower as we got a deep dive to understand just how nefarious these villains are. But once the 70% mark hit, things got crazy! We also learned so much more about Jagaros, and I was living for it - that prologue and epilogue had me all in my feels! The book handled trauma and grief, the secondary romances, and the unique spin on soulmate bonds perfectly! As always, Coen's devotion to Rayna made me melt every single time. Rayna's growth as a character and willingness to ask for help and let her friends carry her burden was also so heartwarming to see. Overall, another superb book in this fantastic series!

Also...I hope Mariah was hinting at a possible spin-off about Terrin and Dazmine so we can learn what they were up to together during their mission! As always, super excited to see what Mariah cooks up next! I'd rate this 4.25 stars!

This has been my favourite so far of the series!!

Finally Rayna was asking for help and trusting her friends! There is something so annoying about a character who constantly has to go it alone, pushes everyone away and self sacrifices CONSTANTLY without any growth!!!

But our girl Rayna has such good development in this book. I loved seeing the found family growing.
Rhodi is easily my favourite. And we finally got some details on Wren, which I wish we got more of her story and character development. I love side characters, especially when they get some air time.

Coen pretty much as same, except he seeing Rayna as an equal and not constantly trying to shield her.

So curious about where the next book will go now they’re changing locations. Will we get more characters? I really want POVs from Dez, Terrin, Jagoros and Rhodi.

Questions I have;
Will there be new POVs unlocked
Where did Ms Pincette go??? What’s her deal
What else does Rhodi know
Will we get more of Jagoros and Rayna’s mum ? (I can’t spell let alone say these characters names)
What’s happening in vampire island, who was that girl?

Thank you Mariah for this ARC! 4.5 ⭐️

It was such a good 3rd installment! As always the magic system and detail she put into each if the 5 main magic abilities is unmatched. (That mind manipulator magic really is so genius.) There were tons of plot twists in this one which I always love. One even had me stunned, mouth gaping open kind of shock.

This book did open quite a bit more map and possibilities which I’m sure is where we’ll find ourselves in the next two.

I also want to note that I’m really happy with the part where they honored Garvis. That was such a touching part.

Overall I did give it a 0.5 less than the other two because there were a couple points (vampires mostly) that I thought would build more, but they didn’t and left me a little confused as to why. I understand it might be the focus of next book but with how little it was developed I wondered why even mention it at all if it ended up going nowhere at least in this 600+ page book.

Spectacular though, I’m really itching for book 4 to learn how Jagaros and Rayna’s relationship shifts and to see what becomes of Rayna (👀).

Wow. Mariah absolutely nailed it again. This was one of my most anticipated releases for this year and for fantasy readers that says enough in itself considering the line up for this fall.

I read book one and two last fall, and Mariah does a great job at recapping the previous storyline without it feeling like a recap. The way she wrapped up the plots and storylines from the previous books, while setting up the new plots for the next books is something not many authors do well. It's not boring or drawn out and l (again) I'm eagerly awaiting the next installment.

The characters and relationships are well thought out and meaningful. The magic system and world is one of my absolute favorites. Its a hard task to build something fresh and interesting in this genre and Mariah does just that with this series. Just the right amount of spice and some absolutely epic yearning. If this series is not on your TBR, make room because you won't be disappointed.

Thanks Mariah for the advanced reader copy and not making me wait until October to devour this gem!

Big thank you to Mariah and team for the opportunity to review this ARC.

We are back at the Institute with Rayna and friends, who plan to bring down Esholian Institute and reveal the truth behind the Good Council. Meanwhile, Coen is working for the Queen and doing her deadly bidding, while assisting Rayna and friends to bring down the Good Council. We also learn more about the Unhabitable lands and surrounding regions, and the populations of those areas.

I could talk about this series for hours. It has an incredible balance of fantasy, romance and suspense. If you love a college matched with a jungle setting, with animal and plant talking abilities, this is for you.

It is one of those series that the map continues to grow with each book as the main character learn of the new surrounding lands. So if you enjoy an expanding world and exploring those lands, this is for you.

Big congrats to Mariah on the publication of thise new book. I'm so excited to see where the series is headed!

Received an ARC from the author and immensely grateful for it! In terms of storyline, the 3rd book did not disappoint, it was packed with twists and turns and loads of information to push the story going and I could not put it down. I especially love the scenes in the institute, it reminds me fondly of Hogwarts and i was glued to the book whenever the book was describing Rayna’s classes. I just wish there was more exploration on the development of Rayna’s other powers other than wild whispering. But i mean, I wasn’t complaining, the animals were cute.

That being said, i did miss the angst and tension between Coen & Rayna, maybe it’s a me problem but somehow their relationship became more bland and predictable after they confirmed their feelings for each other. So far, nothing has topped the scene in book 2 inside Coen’s mind, right beside the gate :)

And also, can we get more Rodhi x ms Pincette ?? I just feel their relationship could be explored further ! I am invested.

Thank you to Mariah Montoya for this advanced readers copy!
I waited over a year to find out what happens next and nothing could have prepared me for that!

We not only get to see our beloved characters again with Rayna and Coen and all their friends (animal, human and fae), but we also get to see more tension, fights and plotting!
I love Rayna’s little friend group and I hope to see more of them in the upcoming books!

The twists and turns of this book kept me on edge.
The last 30% were the best of the whole book and I couldn’t stop reading! Loved every second of it.
How should I survive another wait for book 4 after this ending?? Can’t wait to return to this amazing world.

But I would have really wished for a short introduction chapter as a recap. You forget some of the characters and what happend in book 1 and book 2.

Thank you so much, Mariah, for creating this incredible world—one that captivates you, draws you in, and makes you never want to leave ❤️

By the Lockpick and the Lyre is the third book in the Esholian Institute series. The series remains strong even in the third book. Rayna and Coen continue to manage their relationship while under the thumb of two opposing queens. The found-family element remains strong through Rayna's core group of friends, and the worldbuilding continues. The book adds lots of new details about this world, and it was interesting to read more background and learn more about the past and how the characters ended up in their current situations. The spice was strong even though Rayna and Coen were struggling to be together, and the plot of book 3 is established, so it sounds like the series is still going strong. Rayna has come a long way from the naive girl she was in book 1, and I'm looking forward to reading more!

I have now fallen even harder for this world! The magic system in the Esholian Institute series is easily one of my favourites I've ever come across, all the details in the way the Wild Whisperers can talk to the animals and the trees is so carefully thought out and so endearing.

This third book pulls back the curtain on so much more of the island's history and that of its key players, moving the story forward in a way that feels both satisfying and full of promise.

Best of all, our FMC has really grown. She learns from her past mistakes, trusts her friends and stops trying to carry everything alone. Honestly, so refreshing!

Three books in, the series is only getting richer, and this one leaves me with high hopes for what's coming. I'm already so excited to see what follows!

Wow! This is my first ARC read I’ve ever had the chance to do. And let me tell you, wow!

This series took me by surprise a year ago when I first picked up “By the Orchid and the Owl.” I’m not a big academy reader but this series…is everything I’ve ever wanted.

Each book is a brand new experience with these characters. And each book gets darker. More battles, more yearning, more of everything. Surprise friendships, family, and enemies. Whenever I had an inkling of what MIGHT happen, I was completely surprised with the change of events. I’m not big on spice, so since the plot is so thick and has so much detail, when the sexual tension does come in it isn’t over bearing or too much, it’s just the right amount.

All in all, Mariah Montoya knows what she’s doing. I absolutely loved, screamed, hated, cried, all of it. I cannot wait for the series to be completed.

I got this as an ARC. I love this series so much!

I didn't do a re read of book 2 before diving in, but I did go read my review, just to refresh my mind. Even without doing a re read, it's like I never left this universe.
The details from books 1 and 2 make subtle comebacks, so you're left being like "ah yes, this happened" without feeling like it's too much of a recap.

I really like how this story has seemed to grow as time has gone on. The characters and the themes are more mature, but not in a we're doing this for the sake of it sort of way. The longing and the slow burn are also perfect. I like that the romance belongs in the story, but doesn't feel like too much.

The magic system has also been super fun to see how it develops and what it does to and with the characters. Thank you for creating such an amazing universe for us!

Thank you Mariah for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

I read the first book in this series last year right around this time of year and fell in love.

This book was so good and I found it so hard to put down. I love Coen and Rayna and the love they have for each other.

Mariah writes such good book endings that make you so excited for the next one.

By the Lockpick and the Lyre had everything I love about this series and fantasy books in general. The tension, the storytelling, the bonds, the action, and of course the suspense about the fate of all the characters.

This is a series I will continue to recommend to everyone.🫶🏼

ARC RECEIVED FROM AUTHOR

This series has been a crazy ride and I can’t wait to see what happens next. Everything from the first and second books start finding their place throughout this book. While the first half was a bit of a slower read by the time I got about halfway I was incredibly hooked and smashed the book out the same day.

I highly recommend this series for anyone who wants a bit of an adventure and some crazy twists.

I love these characters and the story and cannot wait for book 4 to be released.

Thank you so much for this opportunity as an ARC reader and I hope to do it again.

4.5 stars. just as amazing as the first two books in the series! i'm obsessed with this world and the magical system Mariah has created. i loved all of the different character storylines in this and i especially loved all the Jagaros content i was handed. felt like a full buffet. this answered so many questions from books 1 and 2 while still managing to create some more. i'm both hopeful and overjoyed that it seems we'll see more of Jagaros in book 4 as well, since he's my favorite character. Mariah, girl, i hope you have book 4 already halfway done cause i'm chomping at the bit to get my greedy little hands on it!

thank you so much to Mariah for the ARC!

Mariah is blowing my mind with this series!
It’s truly so incredible! If you haven’t yet started it please do!

Book 1 to book 3 there’s never been any dull moments or thoughts that anything could be removed. Everything is needed. Every moment and conversation is so well thought out and executed and sets you up for reveals down the road.
This one comes to a really good end but also sets you up for the next book which I can’t wait to read! I have a feeling it’ll be one of my favorites in the series!!

Felicity and Willa are some of the cutest animal companions with the best personalities! They had me laughing early on and better be sticking around until the very end and living happily ever after…cough cough Mariah this is for you!

Coen was still perfection so no notes on him.
Rayna continues to become more badass with every book and I am so here for it! I’m excited to see how she steps into everything thrown her way in book 4.

The found family with friends continues to be so well done too!

Everything is pretty much perfection and you should start this series if you haven’t. You’re welcome ☺️

This Installment of the Esholian Institute answered so many of my questions and also gave me more. I really enjoyed the academic aspect especially for wild whispering in the first two but I loved how it was really applied in this one. This is a book that you really have to pay attention to and may have to reread to make sure you read that correctly! Rayna and Coen are consistently two people I root for and enjoyed every second that they could be together.
