Space opera creep has set in!

The cure: shut your eyes and nod off.

I loved volume one of Slott’s run on this title, never read volume two and have now hit a brick wall with this one. The brilliantly conceived time-loop issue aside, this one gave me a brain freeze/Secret Wars-tie in headache.

Slott tries to gamely anchor the space shenanigans in the relationship between the Surfer and Dawn, but, even though I love the ingenue-in-space thing, it’s worn thin.

The time loop issue is a marvel and took lots of planning from Slott and Alldred to get off the ground. If you are a comic book fan, it’s worth looking into just for the sheer chutzpah (and man-hours) it took to pull it off.

The last issue, the tie-in to the mostly God-awful Secret Wars, brought me back to my seventeen seven year old self, when I would stare numbly at this type of grand eloquent spacey story line put the comic down and go outside and shoot some hoops. Or flatten my neighbors tires.

Bottom line: This volume, with the noted exception, was a let down from the initial promise of volume one of Slott and Allred’s collaboration. Volume two? I have no idea.

Two and one half stars rounded up.

I still, mostly, <3 you, Dawn.

So, like, uh, the Silver Surfer bends the fabric of space, the story becomes a Moebius strip, and everyone gets stuck in this annoying time loop of endless invasions. The invaders finally jump to a place beyond the Giraud Expanse, while our heroes become prisoners of a sentient pleasure planet. Well, and then the shit really hits the fan when all of existence is suddenly being torn apart (it’s crossover-event time!)—but fear not, true believer: the Silver Surfer and Dawn simply outsurf the wave of universal destruction, find the Land of Couldn’t-Be Shouldn’t-Be, and use the power cosmic to remake the universe! Hooray for Dawn & the Silver Surfer!!

This third volume still had its moments of sweetness and earthbound romance, but much of it may have been a tad too cosmic for my little head. Like that Founder dude in the story, though, I “put on a brave face. At least for the children...”

The Silver Surfer and Dawn get trapped in a time loop, get stuck on a paradise planet, and try to rebuild the universe.

Here we are, the final volume, as of now, of Dan Slott and Michael Allred's run on The Silver Surfer. Honestly, it's kind of a mixed bag, though I can't lay the blame solely on the Surfer's gleaming shoulders.

The first story is a time loop that's depicted in a creative way, the panels forming a Moebius strip. First off, I thought this was very clever and pertinent to the story, not as gimmicky as I originally thought. I loved that the story featured Space French-speaking aliens and the area the Surfer and Dawn traveled through was called The Giraud expanse, a nice reference to noted French comic artist Moebius, aka Jean Giraud.

The second story was also pretty good. It turns out Surfer and Dawn never left the paradise planet they found in the first story. Paradise wasn't what it was cracked up to be.

The third story featured Dawn and Surfer taking the long way back to Earth, visiting everyone they met in the previous two volumes. It reminded me of the 10th Doctor's swan song before his regeneration and made me think I wouldn't be pleased with the final story in the collection.

The fourth story is what sucked half a star of enjoyment out of the book. It's a shame that this title's revolutionary run was derailed by Secret Wars. Still, it was cool seeing The Silver Surfer and Dawn attempting to rebuild the universe.

While I didn't like the abrupt ending to the series due to Secret Wars, Slott and Allred did a good job making chicken salad with the chicken parts they were given. I hear the series is coming back and I'll be ready when it does. 3.5 out of 5 stars.

A solid continuation of our story thus far, most notable for the Moebius loop timey-wimey issue and in particular, if you’re reading the book in its TPB form, Slott’s insane whiteboarding of the layout for that issue, which is pictured at the end. We’ll round up from 3.5 stars just for that.

If that’s what it takes to write comics for Marvel and/or succeed in life, it’s clear that I will never write for Marvel and utterly fail at life.

Read this one physically, not electronically, for maximum shenanigans (there's a part of the story that "requires" reader involvement, that's all I'm gonna say).

Volume 3 is more in line with Volume 1 than Volume 2 (the best one, if you ask me), and I liked the first two stories better than the last three, but it was an entertaining volume nonetheless.

Norrin Radd, the Silver Surfer, finds a new planet for the six billion souls he made sort of homeless in the last book in this third and final volume of the latest run of the title. But will Dawn Greenwood forgive him for keeping his past as Galactus’ herald from him (she must’ve been the only one in the universe who didn’t know that!)?

Last Days kicks off with an extra-long issue featuring a Moebius-strip on the cover. It’s representative of the clever repeating story within which switches perspectives in each telling - first the Surfer, then Dawn, and so on down the cast, until something changes and the loop is broken. Clever and imaginative - but oh so boring. Really, I wish Dan Slott had come up with something a bit more interesting to read over and over and over again than the same old same old we’ve seen throughout this series where evil aliens attack and the Surfer fights back.

But, as expected, the Surfer fulfils his mission and finds a home for the wandering six billion and where the burgeoning romance between Norrin and Dawn can play out… if you’re interested in reading corny romance!

And then… sigh… Secret Wars invades yet another series to obnoxiously disrupt everything. The universe ends and Norrin and Dawn must out-surf oblivion to reach a place where they can somehow bring everyone back. The escape was cool but seeing these two recreate the universe? Not really. Who knew watching two beings playing god could be so uninspiring and dull (except anyone who’s watched someone play Sid Meier’s Civilisation)?

Thank the New Gods then that, while the book is a snore to read, we’ve still got Mike and Laura Allred’s incandescent art to keep us turning the pages. Slott can’t make a pleasure planet interesting to read about but the Allreds can dazzle the reader with lush visuals and bright colours. We’ve seen universes end before (assuming you’ve been reading superhero comics for a time) but seeing the Allreds show a universe being created is something really special.

Last Days is the weak final book in this otherwise decent Silver Surfer series - though Slott’s work has never been that strong on this title and without the Allreds’ work, I’m not sure this series would have had much appeal. But, like nearly all the titles flattened by Secret Wars, Silver Surfer’s back with a new numbering and the same cast and crew: Dan, Mike and Laura, Norrin, Dawn and Toomie all ride again (though I wish Dan Slott’d take a breather and let a new writer in to freshen up the series)!

I feel this volume was better than the last. This book was innovative in it's way to go into cosmic thinking. The universe is unmade and then a battle over which one is real happens. Trippy! The art is good and this has some great imagination backing it up.

I really like Dawn and the Surfer together. They actually make a great pair. I enjoy the surfer stories and I will finish off this series.

The time traveling loop has been done to death I feel and I like they way they got out of it. It is an interesting read.

There's exactly one great issue in this book. For better or for worse, it's also the first issue, so it's all downhill from there. That one great issue is a very clever time loop story, told through panels that form a Möbius loop. It's a novel form, it actually suits the story, and it's visually interesting. And then there's more issues after it that are just kind of ok, I guess. Not bad, just sort of mediocre. Or maybe they just felt that way after that great first issue.

But the one thing that has remained consistently top notch through every issue of this incarnation of Silver Surfer has been the incredible art and beautiful coloring of the Allreds. No matter what was going on storywise, this book always looked fantastic, and unlike the vast majority of other books on the racks at the moment. If all you get out of this version of Silver Surfer is to look at the art, it was time well spent.

This was a very weird volume.

It starts off with Norrin trying to take the survivors to some safe planet but here they start being experimental and all that and I absolutely hate that time travel/loop story and the way its done, totally sucked the enjoyment out of this series.

And then you have them escaping from paradise and not what its meant out to be which kinda sucked too lol but once thats over we see them tying into secret wars with the universe ended and a new reality being made and so Norrin has to shape the new reality and meet Glorian but what happens when Eternity is restored.. which universe will Dawn and Norrin choose? It becomes very philosophical and personal and whatnot and yeah its fun or maybe Alan moore-level high-thinking concepts and yeah some people will like it but I was just rushing to complete this as it got sort of boring.

Yeah this was not my favorite volume in the series and it kinda kills the fun out of the entire thing so yeah see if you like it or not.

Another great volume! I can see where this would've been a good ending to the series, but I'm glad Marvel allowed the series to continue eventually, and so there are two more volumes for me to enjoy! I don't have them yet, but I'll probably buy them within the next two weeks.

A little bit of a step down from the previous volume, only in that this one spends a pretty long time in its final issues dealing with a bunch of cosmic nonsense that was never fully explained in a way I could comprehend. I've really enjoyed Slott & Allred's ability to take a big sci-fi idea, boil it down to its essence, and find an emotional throughline within the premise to influence Dawn and the Silver Surfer's points of view on the matter. It's been a very cool and unique way to tell these Marvel space stories.

However, with this volume, while there are cool ideas (the first story, which won an Eisner, is insanely creative and well-executed), the final three issues feel weird and unearned. I'm not sure if this is because they're a Secret Wars tie-in of sorts, or if Slott & Allred just really loved the idea and I didn't, but one way or another, the last story didn't do it for me.

That said, I'm definitely going to keep reading this series. It's one of the most creative and different series Marvel's doing right now, and I'm in it for the long haul, missteps or not. You can't go wrong with this one, folks!

I wasn't quite as into this volume as previous ones but there are some pretty innovative things in this volume.

The first issue is actually a Mobius strip. The way the story is drawn and written literally forms a loop across pages. The back of the volume actually explains what it means and how to read it properly and it's pretty amazing.

Dawn continues to show the Surfer how to be more "human", developing their relationship even further. The last couple of issues actually deal with the end of Secret Wars and there are some spoilers so be warned (unfortunately I wasn't.) It's an interesting way to tie in to that event.

The entire volume isn't quite as quirky as previously and not a lot of humor this time. It continues Surfers road to redemption to be free of guilt and it does touch a little about loss and regrets and how it shapes who you are. Fairly ambitious stuff to tie all together and I think that's why this volume deserves three stars.

By far one of the greatest runs of Silver Surfer in a long time. Each issue just kept getting better and better. But the closer we got to the Secret Wars event and Silver Surfer's "last days", each week would go by with no word of a continuation. As Secret Wars wrapped up I finally got some relief as not only was the former Herald returning but the team up of Dan Slott and Mike Alred would continue to be behind it. Continue on Silver Surfer, the best of Marvel's cosmic line up and one of the best books the publisher puts out right now.

This run has consistently been absolutely great, and this volume is no exception. It is fun, funny, smart, very experimental, and with stunning artwork by Mike and Laura Allred. Seriously, this is their best stuff, incredibly detailed, bold and gorgeous.

This is a very unique series from Marvel, and I am glad to see that it has ben "renewed" post-Secret Wars with the same creative team. Can't wait for the new issue #1! (FFS, Marvel, is it really that necessary to start every series with number 1 again after every big commercial event? This is getting ridiculous.)

I loved Slott and Allred's run on Silver Surfer. in this volume they manage to tie up all the plot threads before Secret Wars ends the book. In fact, I think this book has probably the best Secret Wars tie-in. The book is everything you've come to except from a Mike Allred book. It's a kooky, fun adventure with breathtaking, beautiful artwork.

Much-delayed by the tardiness of Secret Wars, Slott and Allred's first year of the Surfer finally concludes. One wonders why Marvel bothered holding it back so long; yes, there's an oblique spoiler for the event's finale here, but in a sense that goes for every comic they've published set in their slightly-rebooted core universe, and lots of those are up to their third issue. There's still a definite flavour of Doctor Who to the adventures of the tormented, curious alien traveller and his human friend/conscience, but as this volume gets increasingly cosmic, Marvel's foundational Kirby kraziness gets turned up in the mix too. Except much better, obviously, because Dan Slott can actually write, and Mike Allred can draw considerably more than two facial expressions.

Yuck. Time travel.

Also, I don't keep up with the larger world of comics like I used to, but this thing reeks of stupid crossover. Is that a thing that was happening when this came out? Dudes, you do not need to do crossovers anymore. That shit's dumb. I mean, it's cool to see characters show up in other books, but you don't have to screw around with what is a very cool Silver Surfer story because Doctor Doom is becoming the whole universe or some shit. And what's with the "If the heroes prevail, they'll need a universe to come back to" horseshit? Of course they'll prevail. That's why they're called The Prevailers. It's what they do.

Just stop it with the weird crossovers already.

Oh, and stop slapping new covers onto comics from the 60's. We know what you're doing. Stop that. Bad.

I love Dan Slott.

I love Mike Allred.

But it's taken me a bit to catch up to their genius on Silver Surfer. Issue 11, reprinted in this collection, is the single most-inventive and creative work of art I've come across in ages. It's actually written in the shape of a Möbius strip or in the shape of the infinity symbol ∞.

The remainder of the collection is equally as pleasing. Making it one of my favorites of 2016.

Yet another excellent series is made a bit worse by Secret Wars. Thanks Marvel.

This volume opens with a brilliant take on a Möbius strip. As the Surfer takes the former residents of Newhaven on a search to find a suitable planet for all 6 billion of them they all end up in a time loop which sees you as the reader follow the panels of the comic in a unique way which includes turning and folding. It's a lot of fun yet still works as a great story too!

The next issue sees the Newhaven aliens on their new planet along with Dawn and a de-silvered Norrin. Norrin and Dawn have found a paradise but as ever things are not all they seem and some crazy sci-fi stuff happens. Another clever little story.

Then suddenly the universe ends but the Surfer and Dawn manage to survive. They are then entrusted with re-creating the universe- Dawn does Earth and Norrin the rest but yet again things aren't all they seem and great danger lurks. I liked where Dawn and the Surfer were re-building the universe but the final issue here took things too far as they had to choose their new universe or the old one.

This is all of course tied up with Secret Wars, a Marvel event I really didn't like. But as it affected the whole Marvel universe every comic book had to be linked into it. It's a shame that this mind-blowing run of Silver Surfer had to deal with that but I have to admit that this is the best Secret Wars tie-in I've read, not least because it stays in the same continuity. I just wish that Marvel would have let Slott and Allred carry on with the amazingness they were creating.

Allred's art is wonderful as always here and the Möbius strip relied on his art. I'm not sure other artists could have pulled off such an innovative issue.

The worst volume thanks to the Secret Wars influence, but it's still superior to virtually every other comic book in existence. I am desperate for more and can't wait for the next volume which thank goodness is keeping the same creative team!

I've been pretty much losing my mind over each volume of this series, but Last Days runs afoul of a crossover, which almost every ongoing super-series eventually must do. The first half of the book is stellar (ha ha space humor) -- one issue is a really bonkers Moebius strip that depicts the Surfer and his travelling companions as being stuck in a time loop. In order to get them out the reader has to fold the page, and dear God almighty do I love me some goofy metatextual chicanery in my superhero comics. So I'm all for that and a half.

After the Surfer escapes the sentient pleasure planet that he lands on after escaping the Moebius strip (dear god I love this book), then he and his best girl Dawn have to deal with the universe-ending fallout of Secret Wars, which seriously ruins everything (ha ha apocalypse humor). Slott and the Allreds manage to pull a story out of the ordeal that keeps to their love-heals-all theme and brings back one of the series' old villains, but it still feels like you need to go out and buy Secret Wars to fully understand things, which no.

But I still love this series. Between this and Black Panther and Doctor Strange I am totally loving Marvel lately, and I haven't even been reading X-Men.

I'm a little bit sorry I got so annoyed about the first story. The idea behind the artwork is genius but I still got upset about turning the book around each page. In Silver Surfer everything seems peaceful. Okay, everything stops existing and whatnot, but there isn't any sense of drama (for me). You just know it'll be alright in a few pages and therefore it lacks suspense-- and yet it's surprisingly fun to read.

I blame the Secret Wars crossover for this being a little less fun than the previous two volumes, but it is still a good read. We get a bit more in depth detail on the relationship between Norrin and Dawn, and of course it ends on an excellent note with the series due to be relaunched a few months later. Fans of the series will enjoy this conclusion, but I'll be reading the next volume to see how things progress.
