DEEP : A MAX HEAT MONSTER ROMANCE

Rate this book
He went down for the wreck. He stayed for what found him.

Torben Lund is a saturation diver on a decommissioned oil platform in the Barents Sea. The job is cut the risers, strip the substructure, prep for tow. He's done a hundred jobs like this. He knows the cold, the rust, the pressure. He knows how to work at depths that would kill most people. He knows how to keep his mouth shut and his hands busy.

What he doesn't know is why one of the risers punched through into open water at 340 meters — into a trench that doesn't appear on any geological survey. A trench that goes down over two thousand meters in a place where the seabed should be shallow. A trench where the water runs warm when it should be freezing, where the current moves like something is directing it, and where the bioluminescence at depth pulses in patterns too organized to be natural.

Something lives in the Graben.

It is ancient. It is enormous. It has a humanoid torso that could pass for beautiful in the dark, and below the waist it is all tentacle — locomotor, manipulator, sensory, intimate. It does not speak. It communicates through pressure changes, temperature, bioluminescent color, and a subsonic hum that Torben feels in his teeth and his sternum and places lower than that. It has been alone for longer than human civilization has existed.

It has been waiting.

When it touches Torben for the first time — a single hair-thin filament tracing his bare hand in the dark water — his training says ascend. His body doesn't move.

He tells himself it's nitrogen narcosis. Rapture of the deep. A hallucination brought on by pressure and mixed gas. He almost believes it.

But the creature keeps finding him. And Torben keeps going back — deeper each time, staying longer, removing more of his equipment. His dive logs stop making sense. His blood work alarms the medic. His body temperature drops. His eyes change. And the luminous fluid that coats the creature's skin is doing something to his physiology that his professional vocabulary can no longer explain.

Torben is not being attacked. He is not being consumed.

He is being adapted.

DEEP is a dark MM+ monster romance set on a rusting oil platform above an impossible ocean trench. It is a story about a man whose body has always been a tool finding out what it feels like to be wanted — by something that doesn't use words, doesn't negotiate, and understands him better than any human ever has. The love language is pressure and current and bioluminescence. The sex is wet and dark and crushing. The transformation is irreversible.

Content Explicit MM+ sexual content including tentacle penetration, size differential, multiple simultaneous stimulation, and body modification/transformation. Deep-water setting (claustrophobic/isolating). Parental death in backstory. 10 sex scenes ranging from devastating to transcendent. No fade to black. 18+ only.

This book is not for everyone. It is for you.

It’s slowly becoming noticeable that the author’s stories are always the same. The MC and the monster always have the same character, they just have different names. The storylines are also always exactly the same, even if they take place in different settings. At least that applies to the books I have read so far.
Don’t get me wrong, I wouldn’t read the stories if I thought they were bad. I just mean, it’s slowly getting boring.
And please, dear author, finally remove the many repetitions from your books, because even if you use AI, you should edit your work afterwards.

Full of Contradictions

Phew this was a tough one to get through. I’ve read one of Locke’s books before, Feral, and while that one was just as strange, it at least had something closer to a “romance” and an actual story. This book was full of a weird combination of silence and way too much internal chatter. The internal monologue was repetitive and contradictory. We were told the MMC went down with certain things or to a certain depth and then later told something different. Because the two MCs don’t speak a shared language everything is transmitted through vibrations or taps but even these are often contradicted from one chapter to another.

I liked the book at the beginning but by the end I honestly couldn’t tell you if the human MMC even liked the sea creature. They definitely were compatible when it came to the spice but even at the end he seemed unsure of whether he would rather stay above water or live with the creature he found.

The transformation stuff was interesting but without a connection to the relationship between the MCs or much of a plot that was consistent enough, it was hard to stay interested.

I might try another book from this author but I hope the next is more driven by the relationship and less distracting with its inconsistencies.

Tropes: Human/Underwater Creature, Single POV, Transformation
Rating: ⭐️⭐️ 2/5
Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ 4/5
Relationship: M/They (the creature is never described with any pronouns but their anatomy is described as typically male)

This was strangely melancholic, borderline self-harmish with very dark thoughts... First of all, it was horror to me, I have bad thalassophobia. And then I was just trying to look past the contradictions and not pay attention.

4.25 Could use some editing for continuity and removal of repetition. Probably AI. But I loved it anyway. Felt like a whole other world.
