Loring-Abbott #3

Seeking Redemption

Rate this book
At nineteen, Lady Lydia Markham was beautiful, bookish and naïve. Her sheltered, loveless upbringing had not educated her in the ways of the beau monde, or the men who inhabited it. So when she met Nathaniel, Lord Fairmont, it was all too easy to be swept away by his rakish charm and good looks. She was devastated when he did not propose marriage, but joined Wellington’s army instead.
Six years of battle has changed Nathaniel: older, wiser, the conqueror of the addictions that drove his misspent youth, he’s avowed to start afresh. But a chance meeting with Lydia unnerves him; she is so very keen to speak to him, yet he cannot fathom why. Has she waited for him all these years? He is unfit for her and is focused on making amends for another’s life that he ruined, and he urges her to forget him.
Nathaniel’s indifference leaves Lydia heartbroken, but she reaffirms her vow to begin anew. Unfortunately, she needs Nathaniel's assistance. If ensuring his aid means following him to the Continent, where he’s gone to fight Napoleon with the Household Guards, then so be it. But will he help once he knows her secret?

Elizabeth Johns

Like many writers, Elizabeth Johns was first an avid reader, though she was a reluctant convert. It was Jane Austen's clever wit and unique turn of phrase that hooked Johns when she was "forced" to read Pride and Prejudice for a school assignment. She began writing when she ran out of her favorite author’s books and decided to try her hand at crafting a Regency romance novel. Her journey into publishing began with the release of Surrender the Past, book one of the Loring-Abbott Series. Johns makes no pretensions to Austen’s wit but hopes readers will perhaps laugh and find some enjoyment in her writing.
Johns attributes much of her inspiration to her mother, a retired English teacher. During their last summer together, Johns would sit on the porch swing and read her stories to her mother, who encouraged her to continue writing. Busy with multiple careers, including a professional job in the medical field, author and mother of small children, Johns squeezes in time for reading whenever possible.

Elizabeth Johns has much to answer for. I didn't have time to read this book, but I kept coming back thinking 'just one more chapter'. The things I didn't do today are all down to her.

What a good book. The hero is deeply flawed, and his behaviour in the early chapters was unspeakable. Elizabeth shows his self-disgust, but even his regret for what he has done doesn't separate him from his deep self-centredness. His only attempt to make amends for the destruction he has wrought is to remove himself.

Six years brings healing to one of his victims and the strength to take control of her life to the other. Nathaniel finally has to take responsibility and face the consequences of his actions, and he has grown into a man who can do so. Through war and tragedy, true love prevails and a women who deserves it finally finds happiness. What a thoroughly satisfying read.

Beautiful story- reduced me to tears!

My husband walked in from mowing the lawn and asked me, ''Karen, what is wrong?"
"I am reading this book," sniffed, " and I am trying to see through these darned tears."

Elizabeth Johns' story of redemption pulled me in from its cover. Set in Regency England, young Lord Nathaniel Fairmont, heir to the Duke of Loring, meets what is to become the love of his life in Lady Lydia Markham. For Nathaniel, it feels too soon; it seems there may be more wild oats to sow- a rite of passage for young Lords in the day. But the spell is struck and they fall in love. During a particularly carefree and amorous evening at a Ball, they manage to carelessly move beyond the bounds of propriety. He must offer for her- and fully intends to- the next day. However, the young lord has also fallen victim to one of the vices of the day ; he wakes the next day to find in his opiate and booze haze that he has accosted his beloved virgin cousin and ruined her. So embarrassed and upset by what he has done he wishes to throw himself away and buys a commission in Wellington's army to fight Boney. Feeling no fear, his career soars and he becomes a hero, and a career soldier- never fearing death- in fact seeing it as retribution.

Meanwhile Lydia- doesn't know why Nathaniel abandoned her and released her by letter. She finds she is pregnant and tries to throw herself at any man in an effort to find a father for her unborn child- her reputation becoming shattered. Once her uncle - her guardian- learns of her situation, he takes her as his mistress and abuses her to keep his silence. For five years she accepts this numbing abuse- until she can find escape.

Five years after he leaves, Nathaniel returns to England- determined to right the wrong he did to his cousin. He is unaware of Lydia's circumstances; Lydia sees him and becomes convinced he no longer cares, breaking her heart all over again. She determines that she needs to find her daughter - who she hid with her old nurse for safe keeping and escape the clutches of her uncle.

It is about here in the story that I began to weep, slowly at first. The story Is about reunions, second chances, death and rebirth. It is about love, relationships, angels and perseverance. It is about war and survival, and human loss and devastation that occurred during a time that we cannot even fathom in today's time. It is also about family.

Elizabeth Johns weaves this wonderful story of Nathaniel and Lydia together-- she even weaves them back together -- briefly. And then she thrusts them into a war. I am not sure that everyone who reads this book won't adopt Nathaniel as their idea of a hero.

This is all I can say in this shirt review about the story. I don't want to spoil it. Bring tissue. You will smile through your tears.

This story is written well, has wonderful characters, and has real depth of emotion- Read this book. No disappointments here. You will cry...for real. Karen

I've been rooting for Nathaniel from the first book. He seemed past redemption but there was a sliver of hope that he could reform and be the best person he could be and Elizabeth Johns carries that off flawlessly. I wasn't sure how she could redeem Lydia but she managed it as well. I actually came to like both Nathaniel and Lydia. This story is filled with a lot of raw emotion that reduced me to tears... more than once. Seeking Redemption is a well written, page turner and a must read!

Out of the first three books in this series by Elizabeth Johns I have to say that this one absolutely blew me away! I was so emotionally involved in the story that I was actually brought to tears a few times which is very unusual for me. This author outdid herself with this installment. It was intense, emotional and suspenseful, but also had a nice touch of humor and romance which set the story off nicely.

WARNING! You will not be able to put this book down! You will take a rollercoaster ride to the stars and back, so buckle up and get ready for the ride of your life! Wonderful read!!!! Very highly recommended.

Nathaniel and Lydia

I have been so profoundly affected by this story. I initially read this book when it was first released and felt moved to read it again tonight.

Nathaniel, Lord Fairmont appears in the first book of the series as a shadowy figure who has caused trauma in the life of the heroine.

Lady Lydia Markham appears in that same story as a somewhat catty debutante with a loose reputation. Have you ever come to a story prepared to hate the protagonists? Well, this story flips everything on its ear and gives the other side of the story.

We find redemption, forgiveness and the power of love amidst the backdrop of the Napoleonic wars. This is my favorite Elizabeth Johns book and I love all of her books.

The Loring-Abbott family is remarkable and I recommend this entire series to readers who enjoy rich storytelling with complex characters and complicated dynamics.

OH. MY. GOSH. I was fully expecting to HATE this book, considering what happens in the first book of the series. But again. OH MY GOSH. I loved it. This was my favorite of the 4. I didn't even see that coming.
I really thought there wouldn't be any way for me to come around to liking someone who made the choices that he did in his past (which makes me sound super shallow, now that I think of it), but I loved both the hero and the heroine in this book. They're perfect for each other.
Holy cow, look at the time. I need to go meet my husband for lunch at Sam's! Isn't that the most romantic thing you've ever heard?

I've been putting off writing this review for a few days so I could think about this story with "fresh eyes." I am so close to giving this book one of my few five stars. These days, I'm saving those for that rare classic that I might read once a year the way one of my friends reads Jane Eyre every spring. Just know that Seeking Redemption came pretty darn close.

I am not a big fan of stories where rakes are reformed when they meet the right women. (I mean, c'mon ladies, how often do we get ourselves into trouble believing that fairy tale?) Nathanial is essentially a decent man who makes some horrendous mistakes, ones for which anyone would have a hard time forgiving him. He spends the next several years doing his own form of penance. I found the story poignant, and Nathanial comes across as a man who is worthy of redemption even if he doesn't believe it of himself.

I felt a little cheated with Elinor's seemingly easy forgiveness of the wrong done to her, but my understanding is that she is the heroine of Ms. John's first novel, Surrender the Past. However, I'd recommend starting with Seeking Redemption first. The writing is more polished, and it makes it easier to get into the first story. (Surrender the Past.)

I found it interesting that the author calls this a "traditional regency". I'm not even sure what that means, but I will caution those of you who are used to modern regencies — this is not the light-hearted Cinderella story that so many regencies have become. This novel doesn't shy away from the darker side of humanity. Considering the novel's title, that's as it should be.

I also found the battle scenes a tad more detailed than typical for a genre that is usually considered women's fiction. (Hint: reading those parts fast doesn't take away from the storyline.) At times, the storytelling reminded me of something more akin to Bernard Cornwell's Sharpe series — except for Ms. Johns portrays women way more kindly than Cornwell did!

All in all, I loved the story, the romance, and the history of Seeking Redemption. I just wish it had been around before I visited Waterloo as a teenager. Maybe I would have seen it as more than "just a field."

Third book in the Loring-Abbott Series, “Seeking Redemption” is aptly named. Author Elizabeth Johns has had to work very hard in the first three books, especially this one, for us/me to forgive and feel better about Nathaniel. It was a tough road, but I feel good about moving on and to let both he and Lydia have a nice life. This series should really be read in order, in my opinion.

A young Lady Lydia had the bad fortune of becoming a one-night stand for Lord Fairmont. It seems there are strong feelings in both their hearts, but due to circumstances of the war with Napoleon, their relationship was suspended for six years without any communication. Poor Lydia, basically alone and in a terrible living situation, had to wait out her age of majority before taking charge of her life. And it had to be done in secret.

I liked Lady Lydia’s story. In the previous two books she was not a character that we cared about; actually not a young lady to be admired at all. But getting to know her situation, and the courage it took to survive, really made me want the best for her. It’s a good example of not judging a person before walking in her shoes.

Way to go Elizabeth Johns for dealing with some tender subjects and situations that surely must have occurred in the 19th Century. I like this series and have installment #4 waiting down on the side table for my dark, very early morning selfish quiet time.

Seeking Redemption by Elizabeth Johns
Loring-Abbott Series Book Three
Orphaned at a young age, Lady Lydia Markham has been locked away in the country most of her life and has become somewhat of a bluestocking. At nineteen, her aunt suddenly remembers her niece and decides to give her a London Season. Only one man catches her eyes, if only she could catch his.

Nathaniel, Lord Fairmont future Duke of Loring, has built quite a reputation for himself. He lives his life on the wild side and has no plans of slowing down anytime soon, although Lady Lydia has him considering it. And then one night he does something that changes everything. His father buys him a commission and he heads out to war.

Nathaniel has no idea what he has left in the wake of his careless living. Have tissues nearby if you get caught up in stories. I highly suggest reading the first two books in this series; Surrender the Past and Season's of Change. An enjoyable series with some real life hardships of what it was like during the war times and of course, love isn't always pretty either.

I didn't see how I was ever going to be swayed in my opinion of Nathaniel, but somehow I was. He was just so hateful in book 1 of this series that I was not really looking forward to reading his story. Well, I was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed his story very much. It was an emotional tale of war, tragedy and finding hope and redemption through taking responsibility for one's actions. You just can't help but care about the characters in this novel. Elizabeth Johns makes them so real...flaws and all...that you fall in love with them and hope for their happiness. My continued caveat with this series is the PG rating...I like my romances with a bit more sizzle. Now on to the final novel in this series!

DNF 25% There is nothing remotely redeeming about this book.

I skimmed some of the reviews so I was aware of the TW rape, but not the TW INCEST! And I cannot stress the TW for rape enough. There is constant rape throughout this whole book.

Light on details. Light on dialogue. I can’t even say there’s too much telling instead of showing because there's basically not content! An empty, shallow book. For a book tackling such a substantial subject and with enormous ambitions, it’s all superficial fluff!

Make sure you have plenty of time to read and a box of tissues. After reading the first two books in the series, I could not wait to read Nathaniel and Lydia's story. This book is very emotional. I highly recommend this book, but as a series. You can read it without reading the first two, but the information and the depth of the other characters would not be the same. Once again, I am waiting to read more of the series. I have grown attached to the Loring-Abbott family.

Amazing

Here is another well written book by Elizabeth. In book 3 of this amazing series we get to learn about Nathaniel and more about how he could do the things he did and what happened to him while in the Army. The name of this book is fitting to the story. Though I couldn't stand to reason what Nathaniel did to Elinor.... it was nice to see him make up for the other things he did in his life. Another must read book.

Lydia and. Nathanial's story ... verified purchase

I thought I would have problems reading this as I am not a fan of Nathanial from the previous books 1-3 of the series.. Elizabeth Johns did an excellent job with showing other sides of both Him and Lydia, i like her now. I will not add more so as to let other readers decide . It like all her books are well written and full of history and adventure .

I had a hard time enjoying the 2nd book in this series because it was about Beatrice, and she was so awful in the first book, I wasn't completely ready to accept her as a sympathetic heroine. I was ready to have a hard time with this one too, considering what Nathaniel had done previously.... I WAS WRONG. I was baffled and delighted to watch Nathaniel and Lydia come to terms with their demons and find happily ever after.

Gripping! Best of the Series

Elizabeth John's is a very talented writer. She quickly pulls you into the story with the characters and their antics. This was the best in the Series with its intrigue and surprising twists and turns of fate. You'll love this book and want to read more of her books. She did not disappoint. I can't wait to read the 4th book!

As a victim of rape myself this was both a hard book and a very healing book regardless of the fact that my story did not have such a beautiful ending. I feel that fiction can (even if only in some small way) bring us the healing we cannot always experiance in our real lives.

One of Johns’ Very, Very Best

Not given to tears, I have to admit a a few ‘wet eye’ moments during this tale. always a good sign when it’s meant to happen! 😂
Her military & battle research is very good. Without giving us gruesome, stomach-churning detail, she portrays the horror of the battle’s aftermath with aplomb.
As for Nathaniel, he is a good example of how drugs & alcohol making a person surrender themselves to disgusting and despicable behaviour. That was quite well-written I thought, without edging into exoneration or mitigation. His redemption over the series has been particularly well authored.
My only criticism is proof-Reading. Not the author’s fault, I’m sure, but she could do with a better proof reader. Over several books there have been multiple spelling mistakes; missing words; odd words that were clearly meant to be deleted; uncorrected grammatical errors....
Regardless, I loved this book & highly recommend it. ❤️

Difficult to begin. Rape, drugs, heavy drinking, careless sex, regret war. I wondered if this character could be redeemed. Running away from problems and leaving injured people in his wake with no reconciliation. Women were ruined and left to deal with the aftermath of his folly. He may have been remorseful but hardly suffering like a rape victim or a unwed mother turned into a abuse victim by her own uncle.
Lady Lydia was sexually abused over and over again by a malicious uncle who knew of her love child and used it as leverage to keep her in line.
Lady Elinor was a victim of rape by her cousin and suffered nightmares and knew she would never have a respectable marriage due to his taking her innocence.
Nathaniel sobered up and fought a war along with the demons of his misspent youth. Six years later he returns home to try to make a go at repairing the mess he left behind. Napoleon has other plans for soldiers at Waterloo.

Am not fond of reading books of rapists nor I feel any sumpathy with them.
But this book really makes you feel we have to forget and forgive.
Hero is trying to stand in the face of every danger he face so he can leave this life as redemption to his shameful past and recluse behaviour.
Heroine fell in love and tried everything to recover her mistake and love which changed her future and life.
Book is written well with many interesting details, we meet Heroine in the previous book in a short hateful glimpse, and act irrationally to protect her reminder of lost love ( which made me wonder how she managed to lower her dignity and self to such low degree).
It's nice to read if you are interested to learn all the detail of lorring Abbot family, as it has many twists and connections to the previous and upcoming books.

This was easier to read than book 1 which I gave 2 stars and book 2 which I did not finish but it was still a bit tough to read this story. This is not like the later stories which I have been binge reading the past while. Plus, there was that long, long segment as the Battle of Waterloo was described which did not add to the story. However, this ended well enough and had twists and turns I hadn't anticipated. Now on to book 4. I wish I had read all these in order. All these people interact and intersect and this was earlier in time to the later ones I have been reading.

Lord Fairmont and Lady Lydia meet at a dance one night and she becomes pregnant. He goes off to war and she has the baby girl who stays in the country. This was such a sad story in so many ways between the war and her uncle. Then Lord Fairmont has to go back to war. This is the saddest of her books I have read but well worth the read. His cousin, Andrew Abbott is a big help to them both and in the end all is happy.

Trigger alert: assault/rape from book 1 rehashed, addiction, adult family member coerces younger family member to be his mistress, war and the scars it leaves.

I had not liked Nathaniel from the very beginning. He has issues but he makes little or no effort to change, until dear Dr Craig gets hold of him. Almost half the book was terrible. I came close to DNF because of Nathaniel. He finally holds himself accountable, then the atmosphere of the book changes.

Lydia and Amelia made all the difference in the story.
