We all wear masks of secrecy. Some are small and insignificant while others are dark and forbidden. We wear them to mislead and sometimes deceive. It is, after all, easier to live a lie than to expose ourselves to the world. Exposure would leave us vulnerable. Yet, the truth could set us free; we hope. The moment we truly abandon all forgeries and remove our veil is the only time we can fully accept our true identity. For Nina Luther living a lie is life in its purest form. As a child, Nina knew she and her entire family were different. The mortals who surround her, fear the unknowingness of what they will become. Nina has no such fear. She is all too aware that her time here on earth will be plagued by her heavenly gift to help others; she despises this. All Nina desires is to be an average high school senior, but cannot hide from her divine destiny. While adapting to her family’s recent move to Savannah, Georgia, Nina falls hard for Chase James, a mysterious loner with a dark and demonic secret of his own. In this world there are saints and sinners. The difference between the two: every saint has a past and every sinner has a future. Who will be the last one standing? Will the demonic uprising on earth mean the end for the mortal angel Nina? Or will she live to die another day?
JP Barry is the bestselling, award winning, breakout author of The Nearer the Dawn Saga and The Cain Trilogy. Her piece, “One Moment,” was featured in the critically acclaimed anthology, This Beautiful Escape Volume One.
We all have secrets. Little things we keep to ourselves to protect our loved ones or to simply protect ourselves. But some secrets are so powerful they can destroy a whole world. Nina Luther is a mortal healing angel, living out her families’ destiny to help others. Nina struggles with her reality, knowing she will never be able to live as a normal teen. One day she meets a mysterious stranger who captivates her. Chase James is a lost soul with dark demonic secrets. Demons and angels are fighting for his soul, but one girl has already captured his heart. Love does not come easy for this young couple. As chaos and war between powerful forces wages around them Nina and Chase can’t deny their powerful connection. As long as they are together they can survive anything the universe throws at them. The author gives us a realistic young love story with some really great paranormal elements. I don’t read many paranormal romances these days and I must admit it took me a little while to read this one, the genre is just not the first one I grab. But I am glad I did. The author creates a world of sinners and saints, demons and angels that will draw you in from the first chapter. This is not just a young love story it is a story of good vs evil with intense emotion that will keep you on the edge of your seat. I definitely recommend this book to paranormal romance fans, if you are new to the genre you should give this one a shot.
I was gifted a copy of The Nearer the Dawn ny J P Berry for a honest review. Reviewer for book-lovers book blog. Bella.
This is the first book I have ever read by the author J P Berry. And I was honestly blown away with her writing and this book. Previously I have read many different forms of paranormal books by a wide range of authors. From the classic werewolves, shifters and vampires. But I have never crosse a book like this. It will truely blow you away. So if you love paranormal reads this is defo a book for you.
In the beginning of the book I did find it hard to get into the book, so I would honestly recommended that you get into this book with a open mind and a clear head. As from straight from the beginning you are questioning yourself about what is in parallel universe.
I did find myself.questing the reality of right and wrong, heaven and hell. Although I am.not religious I do however believe. Heaven and hell, god and the devil. Morality and religion. This story is beautifully written. You a sweept right into the depths of what JP Berry has created and her ever flowing writing is easy to follow and completely wraps around your heart, mind and soul.
Truly amazing read. Be watching for future reads by this author. Simply amazing. Thank you xxx
In most of my reviews I specify that I am a paranormal romance junkie. Love reading a world like our own that is filled with vampires, angels and demons. J.P. Barry's writing sucks you into the story, and I could feel as if I was in the book. She is a new author to me and I will definitely read her upcoming novels that is a fact. I was literally blown away by the storyline J.P. set up, you have good vs evil and our main character Nina has a choice to make, stay on the side she was born into or fall into the hands of Satan himself? Only time will tell.
The romance between Nina and Chase was delectable. They think they are both human beings but they find out they are the exact opposite. Nina a healing angel and Chase is a lost soul. But onto the relationship these two have, was not overdone and I really liked it. You could feel just how far they are willing to go to protect each other. It was a sight to see.
I will say this again, it was a really good read. If you are a paranormal lover that is young adult then this is just for you. The action, suspense, love, heartbreak all in one.
Author JP Barry has blown me away with this novel! She is such a talented writer. Her ability to make you feel like you're right inside the story is truly a talent few writers posses. I experienced so many emotions throughout the story, I felt like I was on a roller coaster! This is my favourite genre and, this author has skyrocketed straight to the top of my LOVE list. Angels, Demons, Chaos, Love! What more could you ask for? You'll definitely want to pick up a copy of your own, so you can see for yourself just what I mean!!
This is my first book by J.P Barry and moat certainly won't be my last❣ Paranormal books are not usually my normal read but I'm so glad I read this the authors writing was smooth like butter and gripped me from start to finish. I fell in love with the Nina and Chase reading from both there pov really helped to understand where both characters where coming from I also loved all the other characters each one brought something to the book ...all In all I loved this book and would recommend it to anyone❣ a definite 5* from me
I'm typically not an avid reader of YA books, however this book drew me in and kept me invested from page one. As ancient entities are brought to light, the eternal battle of good vs evil continues and crosses over into present day. Mortal Angels and Mortal Demons are part of the visual world, hiding in plain sight. But there are also nuetral Lost souls that are ripe for the picking for good and evil. Will good or evil prevail? Battles are won and lost, but the war is far from over! I cannot wait for the next installment!
is from: The Nearer The Dawn: Book One (The Nearer The Dawn Saga 1) (Kindle Edition) I loved this book!!! I am really not into paranormal anything!!! But this book was absolutely amazing!!!! I fell in love with both nina and chase!!! This book has a bit of everything in it. Romance and action.
Wonderful! Started a little slow and not my typical paranormal read! Getting to know Chase, Nina and their friends gave the book great depth! Their struggles for their love is heartwarming! Loved it
I received a copy of this book from the author with no pre requisite to review. But i feel i really have to share my thoughts. Demon's, Mortal Healing Angels, Lost Souls, Gods. Devils, all things that i would normally not be rushing to read. So naturally when i started this book i was thinking "this will have to be good, to keep my attention." And it was !! This story centers around a young girl, Nina, finishing her last year of school before heading to University. She is also a Mortal Healing Angel. She is quiet, gentle, caring and completely likeable, who has always had a crush on Chase. Chase is a lost soul, who has always had a crush on Nina, till one day he actually asks her out and to his shock she says yes. They are deeply attracted to each other, and their relationship grows quickly. Whilst dealing with the strength of their feelings, they are also dealing with new events in their own personal lives. Chase is being followed by Vincent, a most horrible demon is determined to recruit him into the devils army, and is willing to use any means to drive this couple apart. Nina is coming to terms with her powers and all she really wants to be is a normal girl. But will either of them survive the darkness that is invading their world? I really enjoyed this story, it was well written, and i read it in one sitting, simply because i never came to any part of it that i could have set it down. Chase and Nina were so obviously in love and everything seems to be weighed so heavily against them. When Chase realises that he must leave Nina to keep her safe, i was in despair because at this point you really are invested in this young couple and i just didn't think they would survive without each other. The say Love Conquers all, but the author kept us on edge as to wether the darkness or the light would prevail. I guess you have to read it to find out !! I believe this is a debut Novel for this author, and based on this book, i really can't wait for more !!
Don’t be fooled into believing this is just a story of two young adults, Nina and Chase and their path to a happily ever after. Love is difficult to achieve and protect in the real world, it can only be harder when outside powerful forces use you to win their own war in good versus evil.
Both Nina and Chase have secrets that they keep deep within themselves. She is a Mortal Healing Angel, one in a long line from her family, yet something she must keep secret from society. Choices and promises that are made regarding her life, those even she isn’t aware of, but threaten to steal her happiness.
Chase is a Lost Soul who has been attracted to Nina since he first saw her. His heart is in a good place but because of what he is, he is being fiercely sought after by the two sides waging war for his soul. The choices he is going to make, although thought to be his own, will be directed by forces that he is not able to see, but he must fight against if his forever with Nina is going to happen.
Vincent and Michael are the ones who are directing the paths of these two. One is on the good side, allowing free will and choice to guide the way. The other is for evil and will hold nothing back to get what he wants, even if that means destroying anyone who gets in his way. Things will come down to them forcing one to give up their soul in order to save the other if that is what it takes for their army to be the victors.
I am not usually a paranormal fan, but this book had an element of reality to it and consistently kept my interest. I found myself analyzing how this plot fits into today’s world, my views of spirituality and the forces of God and Satan. I wouldn’t recommend this book to a reader who is looking for the casual light read because the level of intelligence in which this story was delivered will get your mind to turning. The plot was intense, had me captivated by about a 1/3 of the way into the book and was a rather fast read for that amount of pages because I just couldn’t put it down.

What an exciting book! This is a thrilling YA about ancient beings brought into today's world. Angels and Demons are among us, continuing a fight they have had for ages. Then enter Nina and Chase. Their kind opposes the other in the war, but can they find balance? Yes they do. Their love helps them to work together and create a better future. I love their connection and I think they draw out the best in one another! A great paranormal romance!
The Nearer The Dawn is a great story. The two main characters are Nina Luther, who is a Mortal Healing Angel, and Chase James, who is a Lost Soul. They are seniors at the same high school in Savannah, Georgia, where Nina and her family have recently relocated to. They feel strongly draw to each other in an inexplicable way. Neither of them is able to tell the other about their true selves but that doesn't stop them fall madly in love with each other. Like many great stories, there is a twist in this one. Chase and Nina have no idea that they are going to be caught up in a battle between Heaven and Hell. Would you make a deal with the Devil's right hand demon? Could you do it to save someone you love? This is the dilemma that Chase is facing. His friend, Sean is leading him into trouble. For selfish reasons of his own, he is prepared to do some very shady things and drag Chase along for the ride. Lost souls are very rare and because of this they are highly sought after by both the agents of Heaven and the agents of Hell. Heaven will not intervene or interfere in the lives of these Lost Souls. Heaven allows them to choose their path for themselves.... Hell on the other hand, will lie, cheat, threaten and barter with these souls in order to turn them to their cause. I don't want to tell you what happens because I don't want to spoil it for you. There are some great support characters in this story, some you will like more than others, of course. As is the way, the course of true love is not a particularly smooth one, and some things that go down will annoy you, but the pace was good and I enjoyed the story.
This was the first book that I have read from J. P. Barry. I look forward to reading more from her.
I do read YA once and a while and loved this book. I think everyone would love it. Young romance, heartbreak, love, this book has it. Thank you JP Barry.
The Nearer The Dawn: Book One (The Nearer The Dawn Saga 1) (Kindle Edition) I think JP Barry is going to be another new favorite author for me!! She paints a pretty awesome picture of Moral and Immortal Angels and Demons. I enjoyed the way she paints us a picture of The Powers That Be, The Elders, God and the Devil. I never got lost through out the entire story of this book!! Commanding Chief for God Michael and Commanding Chief for the Devil Vincent do not play well together and of course Vincent doesn't play fair either. Vincent tries to get the Lost Soul Chase James to commit to the Devils side, but Chase James is to strong to be totally swayed into it. Until Chase James meets and falls totally in love with his soul mate Nina Luther A Mortal Healing Angel. He will do anything to keep her safe from Vincent and the Devil, but so will she! When the war breaks out between the Angels and Demons, because of the Devil not honoring an agreement to The Powers That Be. It becomes a very intense battle!! I won't give details of the war at the end, but now I must wait to read the next book!! I must know if Chase becomes Angelic or Demonic!! I believe Nina will help Chase get back into the good graces of God and they will have there forever together!
"I’d become drunk by his scent, and overtaken by his perfection."
The Nearer The Dawn is everything. It's one of those nail biting stories that you need in your life. While this story is an easy read in terms of language and grammar and structure, it holds a deeper meaning to everything. This book is just the beginning of Nina, Chase, their relationship, Angels, Demons and what not.
#TNTD is a book which not only attracts your attentions, but hooks you up forever. This book ranks in top 10 of my favourite books.
The story of Nina and Chase is sweet, frustrating, heart breaking, and so much more. It will engross you in a way that it would be difficult to let go of the story. It hits the reader in the right spot. J.P.Barry introduces the reader to a whole new world of all things paranormal, love and a little bit of crazy. This book deserves to be read by everyone.
I don't think I can love any other paranormal book as much as I love The Nearer The Dawn. I've been blown away by the author's writing.
Barry has a hot little hit in this gem of secrets and lies and a girl who wants a normal life all the while knowing it isn't really possible.
Nina is a girl who longs for what she cannot have and despises the gifts that she has. Meeting Chase is a game changer and they each have secrets they hold back.
I became completely immersed in the story as Nina and Chase progress together but things around them conspire to break them apart.
Fate always wins even when heaven and hell are on your tail. I love when I get my hands some a new twist to paranormal romance. And let me tell you this author did a beautiful job on writing this story. A story of young love that seems as though they are fated to be away from each other but in all reality their destiny is bigger than anything they can imagine. Nina just wants to be a normal teenager and Chase is trying to run from what he knows is his fate. Will they lean on each other when things get crazy, will fate always win? Even when angels and demons are in the mix? This story depicts such a surreal universe that you find herself wondering how real it all could be. I can't wait for the next book and to see more from the author.
This book is simply amazing. Don't read this if you are unable to enjoy a new perspective because it has a very unique spin on creation and the concept of God and the Devil. As a high school English teacher, I love the adolescent struggle of self and love. It is hard enough to be a teen but to be a healing angel and a lost soul being tempted by the Devil and being a raging hormone teen...come on! This book is dense with lots of parts and people in motion. I love the letters and dynamics of all the characters. Great read!
I received this book from the author for an honest review. For more reviews, go to bbsbookreviews.com
This is a story of good VS evil and how evil comes between 2 people and how it influences their choices in life. I do not want to give too much away cause I don't like spoilers but this has romance, evil, betrayal, revenge and so much emotion in it. I was like No Don't Do IT!, Stop!! Awww Dang He Did It, Get Him!!! I got caught up in the first chapter until the end and it was really hard to put down. I so can't wait to read the next book to see what happens.
I received an advanced copy of this book for an honest review. This is book 1 of The Nearer The Dawn Sage series by the author.
3.5 Stars I adore a good PNR read. It is really my favorite genre it always offers up something new and supernatural. This is a really good one. Angels and demons is the battle of the ages. Nina and Chase are two teens fated and stuck front and center in the battle of good versus evil. I was really sucked into this world. Mortal angels and a boy stuck in between. Secrets and young love all caught in the cross of an epic battle. I can't wait to see what the future holds for the two teens. Will good prevail or will evil rein…a great start with this debut.
This is the first book by J.P. Barry that I have read, and after this, it definitely won't be the last.. Extremely well written, the characters are intriguing, the plot is well thought out! I was kept up til 2am finishing this as I could not put it down! The relationship between Nina and Chase is full of love, and unbeknown to them, secrets. It has kept me guessing right up until the end! A definite 5 stars! #2OCCAB
This book is truly amazing!!! The push and pull of the good and bad on Earth is something new for me to read about. I would recommend this book to anyone... can't wait for the next one!!
This was such an intriguing storyline! I honestly wasn't entirely sure what I was getting into with the opening pages, but it does somewhat set the scene. It's a little slow to start, but the pace picks up pretty quickly and drew me in! Although Nina is your stereotypical teenager for the most part, she is relatable even to adults who remember those teenage girl years! I love a good fated mates storyline as it is, and this book offers that appeal mixed with teenage angst and emotion. The story does jump viewpoints quite a bit, and I felt it worked well for the Chase and Nina points, because it offered alternative views for certain scenes and let you into their mindset. The letters kind of threw me, but I already know that I have to continue to uncover the mystery of those! I finished the last page and immediately had to run to Amazon again to see how many books are actually in this series, because of course I only picked up book one and it ended with a decent cliffhanger that makes you crave more. I do appreciate the "jumpy" writing style after finishing the book though, and I feel that deserves a mention. Some of the viewpoints are written in a formal tone, such as the opening scenes, which is initially a little offputting but the viewpoints from the main characters are written in a realistic and easy to follow tone. It does lend to the author's writing abilities to be able to switch writing styles like that within a book, but if you read the first few pages and feel off about the writing, just keep going! Overall, I'm ready to dive into book two and see where the story takes Chase, because I have my predictions but I need to know!
Nina is adjusting to her life in Savannah and is learning more about herself. Having to hide her gift is draining her. She falls hard for Chase and they fall hard. When Chase is given a choice, he really doesn’t know that to do. He loves Nina and just wants to see her safe. Everyone has their own demons but Chase and Nina must do whatever it takes to stay together. Angels and Demons have always been part of life. Can these two survive what is coming? A truly great read. Excellent writing with fascinating characters.
