Great concept, but I wanted more from the execution
The idea behind this book honestly hooked me right away. A warrior returning without a heartbeat while everyone else stayed dead is a strong setup and there’s a lot that could be explored with that. Pyrus had moments where he felt interesting and conflicted, especially when the story leaned into the mystery of why he came back. My wife asked me what the book was about and even she said the premise sounded really good. For me though, the execution never fully matched the potential of the idea. Some sections moved too quickly while others felt underdeveloped. I kept waiting for the emotional weight of his resurrection to hit harder than it did. Overall, interesting world and concept, just needed a little more depth for me personally.
Something about Pyrus lingered with me long after I finished reading. A man without a heartbeat should feel hollow, yet his journey is filled with quiet tension and unsettling purpose. I found myself drawn into the mystery of why he returned when the others did not, and what that truly means.
The story leans into atmosphere and introspection, letting the weight of loss and unanswered questions shape every step he takes. I felt the pull of his path east, heavy with dread and inevitability. It captures the haunting idea that second chances are never free, and sometimes the price is far worse than death.
I had a lot of fun reading this book. Something about Pyrus reminded me of Nathan Fillion for some reason so that’s how I pictured him the entire time. It was an adventure story with classic elements of magic and necromancers and elves. It had the same kind of mood as dungeons and dragons kind of stories with quests and adventurers. I found it a little bit predictable but that didn’t really ruin it for me.
I would recommend this as an easy fun ready you like an adventure story. I think it would suit people who like the Legend of Drizzt series. It had a lot of elements that reminded me of that.
Pyrus isn’t a regular hero. There’s a distinct unease in this second life that hooks the reader. The story slows down to delve deeper, but the tension remains. I admit to fading a little in the middle of the story but the ending brough me back to life. Absolutely loved Dael! I'm wondering if there will be a sequel.
